AUSTRALIA DAY Pride and Respect
S
elf-respect and personal pride go together and become the basis for living successfully. That self-respect also manifests itself in the respect we have for others – whether they be black, white, beige or brindle. All people are human – as such all people deserve to be treated with dignity. And then there is the pride we exhibit as a nation. Many people believe the greatest things we could do to improve National Pride would be a perfectly functioning education system, a health system for all and no homelessness. Australia has a National Flag and it comes with protocols.
The Australian National Flag consists of: The Union Jack - this depicts Australia's past links with Great Britain. The Southern Cross - Five stars that emphasise the importance of navigation to Australia and the southerly location of Australia geographically. The Southern Cross constellation is only viewable from the southern hemisphere. The Commonwealth Star - also known as the Star of Federation - this shows the unity of the six States and the combined Territories of this country. There are many varied points of view – but the fact is, it is our flag and comes to us with a history – from a continent where flags were used for many centuries prior. We treat our flag with respect – the same as we treat each other with respect.

The recent rain has not only helped the bushfires but also done our trails a world of good. We’re hopeful that with $25 on offer and a golden ticket draw on Saturday we are going to see lots of bikers return to the resort.” It’s not just mountain bikers being catered for over the Australia day long weekend though. To keep the whole family entertained, a range of water sports and family activities will be taking place on Rocky Valley foreshore. Falls Creek Resort Management has arranged water sports operator Peak Adventure to be setup at the lake with an array of free activities.
This Weekend there’s lots on offer. Just get out and do it! Pic – Matt Hull - The Matt Image.
Watercraft include kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards. Jarad from Peak Adventure will be on hand to offer tips, tricks and basic training with water sports available from 10am – 4pm both Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th. If staying high and dry is more your cup of tea why not bring a picnic and let the little ones enjoy free activities on the lake front. Sybrena from the Visitor Information team will be running craft sessions, games and face painting on Saturday and Sunday morning between 10am and 2pm. Of course all that riding and paddling around is sure to make you peckish so make sure you travel with a #emptyesky and visit some of the fine establishments and eateries on the mountain. VICTORIAN ENDURO TOUR At Falls Creek
T
he Third round of the Victorian Enduro Tour is scheduled to take place in the stunning Alpine scenery of the Falls Creek MTB Park. With Elite and Senior riders set to tackle a burly course of nearly 30km with 6 stages, this will be a big day out on the bike for many riders. However with Blue Dirt shuttles running on the official practice day on Saturday 1st many riders will be using the opportunity to learn their lines whilst saving their legs for race day. With this round as an official EWS Qualifier event, many racers are expecting it to be particularly competitive. The additional incentive of chasing prestigious EWS (Enduro World Series) ranking points has led to an influx of racers signing up from further afield. With the world series starting in just a few months we can expect to see some top level riders competing for all important points to secure their entry in the Enduro World Series events. EWS Points won’t be the only points that riders are chasing though. For most riders the main goal is overall series standings and at the halfway point in the series many riders will be looking to consolidate their leads. In the Elite fields long time French Racer
Lionel Sequera has a convincing lead in the men’s competition surprising many local riders this season. Closer to home Albury Local Julia (Indi) Boer is carrying the flag in the women’s series but all eyes will be on local shredders Ebony Tanzen and Aayla Armitage who are no doubt looking to come back from missing the first round. Either way the incredible trails of Falls Creek MTB Park is set to be a perfect stage for the upcoming race. Course maps have now been released and the race features a great mix of stages including Big Fella, Wishing Well and of course the iconic Flowtown. Falls Creek Event Supervisor Nick Buckley said “Falls Creek Resort Management is thrilled to host the third round of the Victorian Enduro Series. We’ve an incredible challenge for riders with a great mix of technical trails and high speed sections. The trail crew have been working flat out getting the course ready and we’re confident the trails are going to be at their best. Given how challenging the recent conditions have been it makes it all the more sweet to see our great trails being raced and people enjoying the resort.”
Lots of talented action for next week's Vic Gravity Enduro. Pic – Ken Bell.

THE PONDAGE ...Needs Your Support
L
ast week’s article regarding the Pondage – and the potential to impose a speed restriction on water sports that take place on the Pondage has garnered quite a bit of interest. And Facebook has seen lots of comments – ideally sharing the article and encouraging people to make their submissions to AGL by this Saturday the 25th. The Email address to send your well-worded and well-thought-out submission to is: aglcommunity@agl.com.au. This paper has received some very well thought out comments and copies of submissions that have been forwarded to AGL – but this community should still be taking the matter seriously and preparing as many submissions as possible. Over the years, ‘our’ Regulating Pondage has provided invaluable enjoyment from a boating and water sporting aspect. Learning to drive a boat – learning all of the safety aspects of operating a boat – learning the healthy sport of water skiing and bare-footing – all in the safety of a secure protected space. In March 2019 an (updated) report was released commissioned by North East Catchment Management Authority under the authority of The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) titled: North East Region Socio-Economic Value of Recreational
Water: Selected Waterways and Waterbodies. A copy can be sourced from NECMA in Wodonga. This report sought to “assess the economic and social contribution of selected local waterways and waterbodies to the regional economy and covered data captured during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 period. Of the 19 waterways and waterbodies studied, the Alpine A Postcard from the late 60’s early 70’s courtesy of Bob Furphy Shire included: – a regular user of the Pondage for water sport. ■ Ovens River at Bright government area level), of waterways and ■ Ovens River at Porepunkah waterbodies to local areas over the 2017-18 ■ Tronoh Dredgehole at Harrietville and 2018-19 period. Of note is the $9.85M ■ Lake Buffalo attributed to waterways in the Alpine Shire. ■ Pondage & Kiewa River at Mount Beauty ■ Rocky Valley Reservoir. It is therefore felt that as many concerned The Mount Beauty Regulating Pondage forms part of this assessment and as such becomes relevant to the restrictive action proposed by AGL (ie. the plan to seek the effective banning of water skiing and jet skiing on the Mt Beauty Regulating Pondage by reducing the speed limit to 5 knots). A number of details from the report warrant highlighting. Executive Summary (E3) presents the estimated recreational economic contribution (direct and indirect contribution aggregated to local
residents as possible get onto the net today Friday and no later than Saturday to express support to keep the speed limit on the Pondage as it is at the moment. Email your submission to: aglcommunity@agl.com.au. • Visit the
