BUSINESS IS NOT AS USUAL It’s takeaway as usual from TakeOut, with some additional meals added to the menu to help get you through lock down. They’re open from 9am from Thursday to Monday, and for dinner on Friday and Saturday from 5.30pm to 8pm. Barriers are in place to ensure you keep your distance, and phone orders are encourage on 0411 695 546. You may not be able to get a massage from Emma at the organic touch, but you can now get delicious, healthy meals! Home delivery lunch and dinners are now available, and you can call or text your orders through to 0415 813 763. Check out the organic touch on Facebook for the full menu and daily specials.
Retail With a number of retail businesses still open and providing essential services, the message coming from them all is strong and clear - maintain your distance from others, wash your hands before coming in, use hand sanitiser when appropriate, and if you’re feeling unwell, stay at home! FoodWorks are open and run off their feet - but that doesn’t mean you should be making daily visits for groceries! What’s even better is that they’re offering free delivery or pick up for online orders, which can be made at www.mountbeauty. myfoodworks.com.au. They’ve put in place guidelines for social and safer shopping, which can be found on their Facebook page. Gather & Harvest are still making behind the scenes, and have a collection of their handmade products available on their online store at www.gatherandharvest. com.au. You’ll find candles, bath bombs, lip balms, soaps, teas and textiles - and considering we’ll all be spending more time at home, it’s the perfect excuse to stock up and treat yourself.
Imagine yourself paddling for fitness in the warm sunshine and enjoying the beautiful views. Pic - Ken Bell
Mount Beauty Pharmacy are offering free delivery for anyone at risk - including those who are over 70 or unwell - and are asking as many people as possible to use their Medication Management App. If you need a hand setting it up, the kind folks at the pharmacy are happy to help you out, but prefer you contact them via email at the moment on pharmacy@mountbeauty. com.au. They’re also providing plenty of informative updates on their Facebook page. Sassy Road’s doors may be closed, but they are still very much open for business! You can shop new outfits posted daily to their Facebook and Instagram accounts, and if you’re in need for some retail therapy, book in a video shopping session with Moni she’ll organise a video call with you and help you shop as though you were in store, and organise postage or pick up for your order. But if you’d prefer to wait until they re-open, you can purchase a $100 voucher now that will include a complimentary private styling session and glass of bubbles with Moni.
Office are open as usual, but are offering those who are in isolation at home and don’t have people around to help them out to get in touch if they need anything delivered. Whether it’s your daily newspaper, favourite magazine or any other supplies you need to get through this difficult time, give them a call on 5754 4002 to see how they can help you out. They’re also asking every customer with a post office box to please use their key to collect their mail to reduce the amount of mail being passed out across the counter. Hopefully this summary of business in town will assist you through this trying period. We apologise if we have missed anyone. The advertising notices will also help with who is still open and operating. •

MY SAY Where To From Here?
A
question that is probably on everyone’s lips. And a lot of how well we do in the next few months will be governed by how well we think about any given situation and by how well we treat the people around us. We have all recently witnessed some of the worst examples of human frailty – ignorance and selfishness – in the hoarding of toilet paper, pasta and soap. What in the world prompted this and who the hell thought that a shed full of toilet paper would stop you getting crook? An elderly retired couple do their buying on Pension Day. They use two rolls of toilet paper a fortnight. How do you think they felt when they get to the shops and there is not a scrap of toilet paper to be found. I am disgusted that people in the town would hoard like this. Each and every one of you should be ashamed. And the rumours of bus-loads of out-of-towners being the guilty shoppers doesn't really cover it all. This town is full of clear thinking, kind, caring people who live here because it is a caring community where we all respect each other. Fortunately the self-serving bigots don’t usually last that long. The state of play at the moment has thrown a few curved balls at us – and the situation is something we can all adjust to. One valued comment was that the latest problem was caused by dogs- ‘so that the owners could stay home and spend more time with them!’ Not a bad way to spend your day – taking care of your family and your pets.
One of the many reasons we live here. We have the 'Big Fella' watching over us! Mt. Bogong from Tawonga. Pic Ken Bell
Another opinion is that we are all going back to Grandma’s rules. ‘Stay healthy, keep fit, spend more time outside, wash your hands, eat well and get to bed early!’ A pretty simple formula for a good life. Throw in ‘be kind to everyone and respect everyone’ and it is just about complete. A newspaper report chased down recently reported that, in 2019 Australia had 207,000 cases of influenza reported and 403 deaths as a result of influenza. On the Influenza Specialist Group website – under Influenza Fast Facts – the site reports that: Influenza (commonly known as "the flu") is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease that can be spread through coughing and sneezing. In Australia, influenza on average causes 1,500 to 3,000 deaths, about 18,000 hospitalisations and 300,000 GP consultations each year. Interestingly, the research quoted goes back as far as 2004, 2007 and 2008. But, just think that even if these figures were only half right, our common ‘flu’ appears to do much more damage than the current COVID-19. In saying that, we should see

The message to take on board here is that we should all be rational. Think clearly! Look closely at the situation around us and deal with the real (not imagined) threats that might be facing us. Let’s face it – Facebook is the greatest load of garbage – usually offering a platform for the illinformed to air their grievances and prove to the world (or those on Facebook) how smart they really are. Even the media at the moment are going a little bit over the top – as they did with the fires around this area earlier in the year.

hat seems a lifetime ago now… and a ridiculously distant memory because life has been overtaken with other matters! The bush fires! The Mount Beauty community were happy and relieved in the knowledge that they could rely on our local Fire Brigade to ‘be’ there. Mount Beauty Rescue and Fire Brigade were overwhelmed by the generosity and support from the local community and whilst they do not look for thanks or praise in any form it is always very heartening to receive it! And there was plenty on offer lately with the community showing their support and appreciation in many ways.
The Alpine Observer published the original of this article as a letter a couple of weeks ago. The letter talked of community members delivering biscuits and cakes to the station for the firemen whilst the local ay Cuire Day. grade 5 and 6 primary school children had sent letters of thanks and showed act great insight for what the firefighters quire give up to protect our community. The ntact letters are displayed at the station. FALL LINES Gliding Suspended
M
ount Beauty Gliding Club Suspend Operations because of the COVID-19 Virus.
Mount Beauty Gliding Club ceased all gliding operations on 26th March in response to the increasing prevalence of the COVID-19 virus and the associated government requirements aimed at reducing the spread of the virus. This unfortunately prevents the Mount Beauty Gliding Club’s usual Easter gliding activities of providing glider winch launching for members and visitors. The Club will resume gliding when the threat of the COVID-19 subsides and it hopes that everyone keeps in touch by email or phone and where possible; ‘stay at home’ and practise ‘social distancing’ and look after yourself and those around you. •
Good Friday Appeal It comes with a heavy heart that we provide this update regarding the 2020 Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Due to the ongoing health warnings from State and Federal Governments, we have decided not to run this year’s doorknock and roadside collection in the Upper Kiewa Valley. The health of our collectors and CFA members is always forefront and I wish to thank everyone who assists every year.
community for their wonderful support over the years and wish everyone a happy and safe Easter. Take Care, Regards, Chris Hollonds. •
Toy Library At Mount Beauty Toy Library we think that borrowing toys rather than buying all your own is a good way to reduce your carbon foot print. (It also saves you money!). Membership is annual and renewed with the financial year. The cost is $40 per family - and for first time families with children under one year it is free!) We also have membership options for Grandparents and winter only memberships. You can sign up to Toy Library by visiting on a Monday between 10an & 11am or by contacting the Treasurer, Lucy at: lucyvardy@yahoo. com.au. The Toy Library is located at the Lakeview Children's Centre, Lakeside Avenue. Membership gives access to borrowing a large range of toys - anything from Tonka trucks, to puzzles, dolls and even big toys like bikes and scooters. Furthermore, we have lots of things that can be borrowed for children's parties rather than using throwaway items. The party box includes a set of reusable plastic plates, bowls, cups and serving bowls. We also have a large range of big toys for groups of children such as a giant connect four and water play tables plus a set of children's chairs and tables which could all be used for parties too.
There are still ways to donate though – and because there are no Good Friday collections, your support is even more important. I will have a number of tins around the town in local businesses including Tawonga South Butchers, Mount Beauty Hardware, Commonwealth Bank also direct deposit on the following details.
In the current COVID-19 climate, would you be kind enough to Email Lucy with your initial enquiry and then the appropriate follow-up can be organised. The Toy Library is a fantastic facility, but current problems will possibly impact the operation. Ed. •

Back on the 17th February, they published an article written by a bloke called John Craven. It transpires that John Craven is the partner of a local lady Alex Dalkin and John was in town visiting the family during the fires in January. He gives Mount Beauty a good wrap “…a quaint tourist village…” and “Mount Beauty boasts a beautiful country parkland course littered with kangaroos and swooping magpies…” and then went on to relate just how much water is needed to keep our greens green. This info was sent to the paper by John Sullivan (who took the author for a round) with the full article (938 words – a bit too big to reprint here) can be found on the following link: https://irishgolfer.ie/latest-golfnews/2020/02/17/putting-things-inperspective/ Have a look at it and, as John said “I found it to be a well written article which promotes Mount Beauty Golf Club and Mount Beauty itself which could be a bonus after the last few months.” If anyone is struggling to get the link, I’ll put it up on the “This Week in Falls Creek Facebook site. •

s many of us progress further into self-isolation to do our part to help stop the spread of COVID-19, that doesn't mean that your physical activity has to stop! Now more than ever, keep yourself active, get your body moving, keep the blood circulation flowing freely through your body and continue to use and challenge your muscles, while also focusing on the mobility and flexibility of your body. Remaining healthy is a high priority, not just in relation to physical health, but mental and emotional health as well. By getting out for a walk, a bike ride, a run, or for a body weight session at home, you can get your heart-rate up and release some feel good endorphins - while also keeping within the social distancing guidelines! For short home workout ideas for those with no equipment or minimal equipment, head over to our Facebook page: Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage to view our workout videos where we will bring some ideas to your screen so you can stay motivated and inspired! Stay safe, stay healthy & look out for one another. •
Comfort & Relaxing Brought to you Lee and Caroline at Gather & Harvest. Use essential oils around the house that promote a calm and relaxed feeling. Burn them in essential oil burners, spritz them in
the air or even place them on your pillow for a good night’s sleep. Just a few drops is all that is needed to help promote a feeling of calm. Essential oils such as Lavender, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang & Chamomile are great to use. Pop a few on a tissue or hankie before heading to the shops and smell these while you are shopping to help you relax if you get nervous about being out and about. Get out in our beautiful area for a walk daily. We are incredibly lucky to have so much space, so keeping moving and enjoying everything our valley has to offer. Pay attention to the birds, animals, colours of the trees, sounds around you…, it’s so lovely and peaceful at the moment. Try to get a good night’s sleep. Avoid alcohol and instead sip a nice up of calming chamomile tea before bed. Eat healthy food and stay well hydrated. •
Lifestyle Wellbeing Brought to you by local massage therapist Heather Mull Feeling Overworked? Out of control and rundown from a cycle of days of working to pay bills, being super-mum/dad if you’re a parent, staying in touch with people, and keeping up with the million other things still to ‘Be Done?’ 1. Daily, make a realistic list of things you would like to get done. 2. Prioritise – most to least important, can something wait until tomorrow? 3. Is there someone who can help with any of these? 4. Tackle the least appealing tasks first to get them ticked off.
A healthy bit of exercise - and the opportunity to take in the views of our beautiful valley from the banks of the Regulating Pondage. Pic - Ken Bell
5. Avoid using stalling tactics like time wasting on social media. 6. 20+ minutes per day of exercise- vital for producing feel-good hormones. 7. Adequate sleep, regular healthy meals, staying hydrated with water, laughing, and talking with a mate can all be helpful. 8. Focus on what is needed to bring your mind back to a state of ‘Calm.’ •

~ A MOTORING TIP ~ Maintaining proper tyre pressure is important for many reasons other than reducing the potential of a flat tyre or a blowout. In order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency manoeuvres, tyre pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level. Even a tyre that doesn't appear to be low on air can result in reduced vehicle handling and excessive tread wear. Check your tyre pressure regularly Perform a simple tyre inspection Be aware of uneven wear of the tyre Know what to look for when checking the wear-bars in the tyre!
