A PERSONAL VIEW Thinking of Others
W
e’re heading into our fifth week of social distancing and self-isolation, and I don’t know about you, but the shiny novelty of spending more time at home is starting to dull just a little. It’s not that I have a lot of spare time with a 10-month-old bub at home who is thankfully easily entertained, and there is always housework to be done, new projects I could start and a pile of books that I always said I would read if I had the time (yet for some reason have remained untouched in favour of Netflix and Stan). I have, however, had a moment to think about what I’m looking forward to doing once this whole crisis has passed, and what I’ve taken for granted all these years that I’m beginning to yearn for now. No, it’s not overseas holidays, weekends away or shopping trips that are not conducted online where you have to wait 3-5 days for your goods to arrive. It’s the simple things in life. Hugging my mum! Coffee at a local café! Dropping in to see a friend! Going for a family drive to explore a new place that isn’t the supermarket! And speaking of - visits to the supermarket have quickly become a highlight. It’s not only a rare opportunity to leave the house once a week to stock up on (and not stockpile) groceries, but the people you just might be briefly reunited with while you’re there.
Making the most of this time together in beautiful surroundings - Eloise and Erin Esler enjoying staying at home with Luna the dog. Pic – Kylie @ Big Bright Photos
Three times now when I’ve been out in public I’ve bumped into (and when I say bumped, I mean spotted from a very safe two metres away) at least three friends that have resulted in frantic waving, a series of ‘how have you beens’, ‘how much wine have you drunk already’ and ‘can’t wait until we can catch up again when this is all over’. In fact, running into people from our pre-Coronavirus lives for a quick chat in FoodWorks has never been so thrilling! I don’t know about you, but I’ve found my communication with friends in general has increased tenfold since we’ve been told to stay away from one another. There’s now such thing as ‘Friday Wines’ via Facetime with my besties, breakfast video calls with my mum and dad, live yoga sessions with a dozen others, and group
Facebook conversations that are almost constantly ‘dinging’ with new messages. I’ve never put so much time and effort into communicating with the people I love, and it makes me realise how much I took for granted in the past. It’s already been a tough year, and it’s going to continue to be tough for who knows how long, but despite all the challenges of this storm, I also think this time to take a step back, slow down and stay at home a little (or a lot) more has come with a lot of beautiful life lessons we’ll hopefully take with us into the future. But in the meantime, keep on doing the right thing, keep on communicating from afar, and keep on being kind to one another while we all wait for this rainbow to appear. • Simone Dowel
www.fallscreek.com.au FALLS CREEK – Coronavirus COVID-19 Update April 17th 2020
To all our Stakeholders, Residents, Snow Sports and Mountain Adventure Enthusiasts, just like you, we are navigating our way through the dynamic and ever-changing challenges that COVID-19 is presenting.
On April 12th the Victorian Premier announced that the State of Emergency had been extended until midnight on May 11th 2020. Victorians must only leave their homes for the below reasons: • Shopping for what you need - food and essential supplies. • Medical, care or compassionate needs. • Exercise in compliance with the public gathering requirements. • Work and study if you can’t work or learn remotely.
This means that people should not travel to Falls Creek for social or recreational purposes, or for activities such as working bees, until further notice. At this time only permanent residents should access the Falls Creek village. Any nonessential travel to the village during this declared period does NOT comply with the

Federal and State directions. We ask members of the public to respect this government directive and help to protect our community and themselves.
Falls Creek Resort Management and our partners are currently preparing as we normally would for the snow season, while we wait for further information about next steps. We would request that as we work with all these parties to gain certainty on the outlook for the season, and the scenario’s that may occur, we would greatly respect your flexibility and understanding of the complexities and priorities. We can assure you, that as soon we are able to; we will give you the best news we can. In the meantime, stay safe, stay healthy, wash your hands regularly and act responsibility in relation to the advice that will help us all in the long run.
During this time, many of our staff are working remotely. Our phones are being manned and our social channels monitored to answer questions where we can. In an effort to assist, we have prepared a list of Frequently Asked Questions which is on our website.

RSL BRANCHES UNITE ANZAC Spirit In The Face Of COVID-19
R
SL State and Territory branches across the nation will unite on ANZAC Day in a powerful display of solidarity and mateship to honour the service of Australia’s defence forces, past and present. The national organisation has come together to support a grassroots movement encouraging all Australians to stand at the end of their driveways or on their balconies for a moment of reflection at 6am on Saturday April 25. With traditional ANZAC Day services and events cancelled across the nation due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the RSL branches are urging Australians to show their #ANZACspirit by safely participating in a private dawn service on their driveway. RSL National President Greg Melick said the idea to unite a country in intimate reflection conducted on a mass scale came from RSL members and the public and was driven by a groundswell of community support and social media momentum. Greg Melick said all RSL State and Territory branches were proud to support and encourage Australians to honour the dedication, commitment and sacrifice of the ANZACs, and all who have served since, by coming together in spirit. “The history of the ANZACs is integral to the history of Australia; the legend of our Diggers is one of our nation’s enduring legacies,” he said. Greg added “Australians had always been able to call on their ANZAC spirit in

times of crisis and trouble. Right now, the qualities evoked by our ANZAC spirit – ingenuity, humour, endurance, courage and mateship – become more important than ever.” “This ANZAC Day, we have a unique opportunity to light up the dawn with our ANZAC spirit, and show our service people, past and present, that we will always remember what they have done for this nation.” The RSL encourages Australians to unite digitally and show their support on social media with the hashtags: #ANZACspirit and #lightupthedawn. More information about ANZAC Day and how to show your #ANZACspirit – including where to listen or watch the commemoration broadcast at 6am – will be available at: rslanzacspirit.com.au prior to April 25. About ANZAC Day As the sun rose on 25 April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on the shores of Gallipoli in what was anticipated to be a quick military strike against Turkish forces. Instead, it escalated into an eight-month battle where more than 8,700 Australian soldiers lost their lives and another 19,441 were wounded. The first major military action fought by Australian forces during World War One sent shockwaves through Australian society that are still felt today. As the sun rises every ANZAC Day, hundreds of thousands of Australians gather across the nation to remember their legacy, and the legacy of all those who have followed their example.

ANZAC Day Locally At Falls Creek a couple of members of the community will be raising the flag at Eagle Rock and laying a wreath. Members of the public are invited also to lay a wreath or flowers at Eagle Rock at any convenient time during ANZAC Day – following the current personal distance rules. In Mount Beauty, the construction work behind the Cenotaph has been completed and the area is clean and looking ‘spick and span.’ Members of the public are invited to lay a wreath or flowers at a convenient time during ANZAC Day as a personal gesture – once again, whilst conforming to personal distance rules. ANZAC Day badges, one of the RSL’s best fund-raisers are available in Karen and Campbell Ford’s Mount Beauty Hardware. So, if you don’t have your badge yet, hook into the hardware. And, while you are there, check the fabulous window display. •

TAWONGA CARAVAN PARK A Vital Asset
I
n a conversation with a friend of mine recently, Bob asked me “what was happening at the Tawonga Caravan Park?” Bob had been a regular visitor to the park over many years up until around 2013. They had lots of friends who all arrived at similar times and stayed for a week or two enjoying the beautiful autumn in the valley. Unfortunately, I was not able to give him a definitive answer. With the help of the members of the Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association, we tracked down the FAQ’s (frequently asked questions) about the current state of play at the park - The Tawonga Caravan Park – not to be confused with a very popular ‘The Park’ in Tawonga South. 1. What is happening with the current lease for the Tawonga Caravan Park? The current lessees, Bill and Nola Turnbull have advised DELWP that they will not be renewing the final term of their current lease. 2. When does the current lease term expire? The current lease expires on 14 May 2020. 3. What are the options for the future management of the caravan park? DELWP is working collaboratively

with the Alpine Shire Council to consider a number of options for the future management of the caravan park. This includes temporarily closing the park while a number of facility and infrastructure issues are resolved. Both DELWP and Alpine Shire Council recognise the important role the park plays in the local community and economy. There is a strong commitment to resolve the issues as quickly as possible. 4. What facility and infrastructure issues need to be resolved? The most critical infrastructure issue for the park is the current septic system. The system is operating at full capacity and failing. It is noncompliant with current standards. Other facilities at the park including the residence / kiosk / office, amenities block, laundry, camp kitchen and

DELWP and Alpine Shire Council are currently seeking funding through a number of State Government programs to progress the desired outcome. 7. Do the current annual agreements carry over to any new lease? Because the current tenants are not renewing their lease, all current annual agreements will cease on 14 May 2020. 8. What about patrons’ booking beyond 14 May 2020? Current bookings and associated deposits beyond 14 May 20 will be resolved by the current tenants, Bill and Nola Turnbull. Patrons are encouraged to contact Bill and Nola at the park to make the appropriate arrangements. 9. What does all this mean for the future of the Tawonga Caravan Park? If sourcing of funds is successful and upgrades completed, the community can look forward to a greatly improved facility servicing tourism in the upper Kiewa valley. 10. Where can I get updated information about the future of the park? Further questions regarding the future of the park can be emailed to DELWP at: Landadmin.hume@delwp.vic.gov.au .
The Tawonga Caravan Park is a vital community and tourism asset in this community. It is critical that the whole community – especially the business community keep the pressure up to make sure the work is done and the very popular Tawonga Caravan Park does re-open in the near future. The fires did not knock us around too badly, but there should be some funds somewhere that would assist this project. It looks like we may have lost the walking track around Lake Guy, and in the near future, we may lose the accommodation aspect of Boong Village also. Losing Tawonga Caravan Park would just be another nail in the coffin. Ed. • For Better Living Brought to you by Sue White, qualified nutritionist & partner at Roi's Restaurant

t’s really nice to be able to afford to feed your dog a ‘species-appropriate’ raw or lightly cooked diet which includes human grade meats, offal, vegetables and some other healthy additions. But this is not always affordable or convenient for everyone. Most kibble has some rather unhealthy ingredients - such as 4D meats, cow eartags from abattoir bins and polyurethaneboxed dead veges from supermarket waste as well as cheap ingredients like corn potato and peas. These kibbles have also been
analysed to contain between 40% and 50% sugar! Studies have shown a big increase in cancer in dogs since kibble had been on the market. HOWEVER. If you must feed kibble (no judgement here) there are some things that you can add to make it much more nutritious. Items such as: sardines in water (no salt) and a cooked egg every couple of days. Some cooked vegetables from your meals: pumpkin, sweet potato, parsley and kale are good choices. No onion! Cooked veges are better as the dogs’ short bowel means nutrient uptake is better. Add some cartilage or appropriate size RAW bone for teeth cleaning and you have a pretty good diet! Some nice additions that I feed my dogs are coconut oil kefir and turmeric - small amounts. If you change your dog’s diet you MUST do it very gradually so as not to upset the gut. Often changing to a better diet can resolve behavioural issues and things like allergies. Good luck! •

Nutrition is still very important during these times where we may be at home more, OR, may be working more shifts and much busier than normal. Try to support your body with all the good stuff it needs to keep you healthy and functioning efficiently.
•
Practice mindfulness in your day to remind yourself of what makes you happy, what you’re grateful for, and what you have to look forward to.

ight now, during the weird and challenging times that we are all experiencing, everyone has different circumstances, but it’s safe to say that there will be a degree of emotional stress and disruption in normal routine for the majority of us, which is why these next words are so important. •

You are doing YOUR best, so don’t compare yourself to others, or others to you. They are doing their best too, but it might look different to personal expectations. We are all experiencing the changes of the world together right now. With new information, comes a range of feelings. Be kind and considerate, as no-one thinks, reacts, or understands the same way as each other, each and every time.

If you’re able, get out and enjoy the fresh air, go for a walk/run/bike ride & get the body moving and blood flowing. It’s a beautiful time of year to be truly enjoying what Mother Nature has to offer us in our beautiful valley. Take time for self-care. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Self-care can come in many forms - exercise, good nutrition, breathwork, talking to a friend on the phone, reflection, walking the dog, crafts, getting your home organised, de-cluttering a room, planting a garden… Whatever it is that
Mornings and evenings are great time for photography – because everything is normally so still and calm. Another reason early mornings are a good time to walk because you get to appreciate our wonderful scenery. Our Pondage by Ben Peacock.

WHATS ON APRIL 25th
ANZAC Day Services. This year we are remembering our ANZACS and all returned service personnel in a different way. The suggestion is we stand out the front of our premises with a light/candle at 6am and take a moment to reflect on what our wonderful men and women have done for us. We can then lay a wreath at our convenience – at Falls Creek, at Eagle Rock and in Mount Beauty at the Cenotaph – obeying the personal distancing rules. Refer article on Page 3 of this paper.
MAY 10th
Mother’s Day. Now some might think this is a little commercialised – but so what. We don’t have to go with the commercial version. We can be creative and find
great ways to contact or be with that most important person in our lives. Skyping, Insta – all that stuff – or even better, something as simple as posting a lovely card if you can’t be with mum on Mother’s Day.
FUTURE EVENTS JUN 1st It’s a Monday and it is also the date of the traditional ‘Falls Creek Ice Plunge’ – the welcoming of the winter with a dip in the chilly Rocky Valley Dam. We’ll keep you posted as we get closer. SEP 5th It’s a Saturday – and it will be the celebration of the 60’s kids turning Sixty! Kerry, Westie, Erin, Lynnie, Debb, Melissa, Bondie, Lisa, Fi, Gayle & Jenny!!! At The Man. The weekend includes Friday drinks at the Pan; Gang ski on Saturday; Party Saturday night and Recovery Breakfast at Elk on Sunday. Keep in touch with Kerry on Em: kerryleedodd@hotmail.com.
~ A MOTORING TIP ~ Maintaining proper tyre pressure is important for many reasons other than reducing the potential of a flat tyre or a blowout. In order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency manoeuvres, tyre pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level. Even a tyre that doesn't appear to be low on air can result in reduced vehicle handling and excessive tread wear. Check your tyre pressure regularly Perform a simple tyre inspection Be aware of uneven wear of the tyre Know what to look for when checking the wear-bars in the tyre!
