FROM THE CEO Season 2020 & The Four P’s
W
riting this introduction to Season 2020 is unlike any other I’ve written, or any other season the industry has had to face. No snow (1970), low snow (a few but less, thanks to snow making), wash outs, wind holds, lightning strikes, equipment failures, power outages, avalanches, landslides – these can and have all been dealt with… a global pandemic however… this is on another level. Season 2020 will be ‘special.’ Not in a Bruce McAvaney kind of special, but a different special! Six weeks ago, the probability of any Australian resort (the industry) hosting this season, seemed insurmountable. Do not get me wrong, we have all got challenges to overcome, obstacles to side step and peaks to conquer. The industry has rallied, unprecedented in its efforts to work through a complexity of issues to be in the position where we can begin welcoming guests to our mountains. Every season, safety is a priority; risks are factors we diligently endeavour to mitigate or eliminate. This year, the consideration set has exploded on an incomparable scale. However, our sights remain focused on providing experiences and memories which are built from being a part of our Falls Creek tribe. We have all been impacted by the requirements to be ‘socially responsible.’ Those requirements haven’t dissolved, and with the experiences of the last few months, I expect these will remain with us for some time to come. I love snow sport because of the freedom and exhilaration it provides. Resort skiing, off-piste and true backcountry touring are a passion.
To be able to do this – and enjoy our magnificent product this year requires a bit more discipline and a tad more thinking ahead and considering others. Enjoy! Pic – Chris Hocking
I’ve also committed to working on my kick and glide this year too. But how we all participate in these activities will require adjustments to what has been our normal.
“This year the season will be punctuated by the 4 P’s. • Planning (and Preparing) • Pre booking (everything) • Print outs (confirmation of resort entry pass, ATS etc) And the most important of all: • Patience.” The resorts have complex density quotients and spatial distancing requirements that we need to adhere to. From ski areas, to car parking, to over-snow transfers, restaurant bookings, retail and hiring outlets, ski lessons, emergency shelters, number of people in the village, etc etc. Everyone one of these make up a part of the resorts 4 square metre grid. The grid is about your safety. The limiting of numbers is to ensure your safety. There is no resort in the world that doesn’t want as many guests as possible to have that ‘majestical’ experience. But, this year, we need to do it differently.
The additional steps needed to record essential information, for everyone who enters the resort, dines at a restaurant, passes through an RFID gates... it’s all being done with safety, not inconvenience in mind. We have modelled and anticipated that the current restrictions will reduce over the course of the season. However, collectively, the industry has assured government that it will take unprecedented measures to deliver a season - safely, and, whatever that season looks like, the certainty is that this season will be special. We are all delighted to welcome you to our resort. Falls Creek is truly unique, and all our stakeholders have worked to preserve that this year. Season 2020 is truly a privilege, and with it comes a huge responsibility on all who can experience it. That responsibility is one the entire community of Falls Creek have embraced. It is one that endeavours to ensure the safety of our guests, our staff and that of our stakeholders and their businesses. Be safe out there…let the season begin! • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

EXPAND YOUR EXPERIENCE Backing Up For An Uncertain Season
S
o, you’re thinking the ski season is going to be different this year and you might look at some touring skiing? There’s a back country or side country in the high country for almost everyone, so let’s look at your options. Firstly, we’ll start with safety and a big shout-out to ski patrollers who regulate the level of risk we’re exposed to in resorts. They won’t be in the backcountry. Safety gear is imperative when heading off into the mountains. You should always carry the right gear and check the weather before leaving. Weather in the mountains can be very unpredictable and come in very fast, leaving you easily disoriented and lost. Before you arm yourself with the latest back country toys, arm yourself with knowledge. There’s lots of info you can read but doing
a course or guided tour is really the way to get started. Don’t let the emergency services risk their lives trying to save you because you decided to go out of your depth. 1: Cross country/Classics Extremely light and focused on skiing in the flatlands. Classic skis have fish scale patterns on the base to prevent you slipping backwards. Skiing downhill on classics is a true skill. It’s a challenge that can make any experienced downhiller look like a total gumby. Good luck with that. This gear is great for covering some distance and getting into them thar hills. Classic cross-country boots have minimal ankle support compared to downhill ski boots and are super light. 2: Telemarking gear Tele touring gear shares the same tilt of features that happen between Alpine and Alpine Touring gear (see below). Lighter, good for up as well as down. With a few tricks to learn to make them easier to use (getting skins on and off, skinning, back step etc), tele skiing in the mountains can really free your mind – or so those with a free-heel say. 3: Alpine-touring (AT) gear A.K.A the fun stuff!!! An AT set-up will allow you to do proper downhill, aggressive turns and can easily be used inbounds with minimal performance reduction. However, they’re heaviest of all touring gear. You can use any downhill ski you like – most people opt for a slightly wider, softer and lighter ski – but it’s the bindings that are most different. Their key purpose is to allow your heel to lift-up when walking uphill whilst keeping your toes firmly attached.
4
The thrill of getting into the back country must be governed by the skill, ability and knowledge of the local area and terrain. Pic – Courtesy OrthoSki
To go uphill on these, you need to attach skins (durable, heavy duty long strips of nylon with what’s basically carpet on one side and reusable adhesive the other). AT boots look similar to downhill ski boots, but have a walk mode which allow for movement of the ankle and sometimes a removable hard plastic tongue to decrease weight and for further movement. They often have ‘grip walk’ – a rubber sole for a bit of grip and rocker for scrambling over boulders or creeks. A good fit for an AT boot is: more toe space, more upright stance, softer flex, and the liners are mostly made for light-weight not performance, so they don’t usually offer the same hold as resort liners. If you’re serious about trying this for the first time, find a guide to take you and ensure you have all the right gear. The last thing we want is for emergency services to be stretched this season searching for backcountry skiers. Loving skiing is one thing, walking uphill is another, but keeping safe is paramount. • Krista Sturday at OrthoSki

OUR COMMUNITY Mt Beauty Taxi & Transfers
O
ne of the best things about living in a small community is the ‘above and beyond’ approach to customer service many of our wonderful businesses provide for both their regular customers and visitors to our region. When it comes to going above and beyond for their customers, Roly and Julie Kukainis from Mount Beauty Taxi and Transfers know how to do it well. In late 2018, we were almost left without a taxi service when the business was up for sale without any takers until Roly and Julie put their hands up and - despite an extremely tough start to 2020 - now provide some of our most vulnerable community members with a service that is so much more than getting from A to B. “I think it’s more of a personal care service in many ways because the sector of the population that travels with us is mainly senior - people who don’t have transport, are bound to their homes either by illness or mobility issues, and don’t have family around to assist them to travel from one place to the other,” Roly says. “That assistance can amount to many things, like chopping wood, carrying their groceries in, fixing their mobile phones, or there could be a spider on the wall at night that they want me to come and get. There are so many things that go into it - taxi driving is almost incidental to the role.”
The spider story is true by the way. Roly came to the rescue one night around 11pm when a regular passenger called him in distress. “She said ‘Roly, I’ve got a spider on my wall, and you said I could call you about anything.” I said “don’t worry, I’ll come and get it.” Roly says when he first started driving the taxi for the previous business owner, he didn’t expect the service to be so personalised, but it wasn’t long before he started to regard many of their passengers as close friends and some event family. In fact, a large part of the reason he and Julie decided to take over the business was because he didn’t want his adopted ‘nanas’ and ‘grandpas’ to think he’d abandoned them. “You become involved in people’s lives, and you start to regard them as your family because they often confide in you when they don’t have anyone else to talk to. I feel it’s an important role; it’s almost a pastoral role in some respects. You need to know your customers, and to put a lot of heart and soul into it to make it work,” Roly says. There are also plenty of amusing stories that come with the job, like the night Roly picked up a group of workers residing in Bogong Village who had come down the hill for a ‘few’ cold ones at the local pubs and needed a lift home. A little too intoxicated to remember where they lived upon arrival, and not dressed to withstand the cold night, Roly ordered them to empty their pockets and promptly tried their keys in a number of doors before he found a couple that worked and sent them on their merry way into their warm beds. A Safer Option: Single-Use, Disposable Menus
Mount Beauty Taxi and Transfers owner/operators Julie and Roly Kukainis. They also do transfers for bush-walkers in summer. Pic – Simone Dowel
Julie is also known to ensure any visitors she drives to Falls Creek are appropriately dressed for the snow before they arrive, whether it’s putting a few more layers on the kids, or stopping by a ski hire for proper boots and gloves. And speaking of winter, much like the majority of local businesses, Roly said they’re looking forward to winter and the transfers they book to the snow from Albury and sometimes even Melbourne. “The business from the tourists is what subsidises the caregiving we provide to the community,” Roly says. “I’m not resentful for providing that care to anyone we look after - we love providing the service here.”
You can find more info about the transfers and services Mount Beauty Taxi and Transfers provide via their flashy new website at www.mtbeautytransfers.com.au, and make sure to check them out on Facebook and Instagram too - @mtbeautytransfers. • A Safer Option: Single-Use, Disposable Menus Our state governments arerestaurants mandating restaurants to disposable menusDowel to help Our state governments are mandating that turnthat to disposable menusturn to help Simone protect dining roomsdining againstrooms the spread of coronavirus. COMMUNITY FACILITIES Airport Funding Welcome
A
LPINE Shire Council has welcomed a commitment from the Australian Government to help fund vital upgrades to the Mount Beauty Airport. Council has secured a $1.55 million Regional Airports Program Grant to lengthen and widen the runway and upgrade lighting, drainage and the helicopter apron. Alpine Shire Council Mayor Peter Roper said Council is advocating for the Victorian Government to contribute one third of the $3.11 million total project cost. “This project will effectively future-proof access for emergency services, improving the safety of surrounding communities,” he said. “Upgrades will support the essential firefighting efforts and allow for 24/7 access for Air Ambulance Victoria fixed-wing aircraft. “The upgrade will include moving the runway approximately 400m further to the north west, away from Mount Beauty, which is designed to reduce aircraft noise over the town and enhance safety.” Cr Roper said Council is grateful to the Australian Government for recognising the importance of these upgrades to the community. “We look forward to the Victorian Government also throwing their support behind this essential project,” he said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for a partnership approach involving all three levels of government to deliver a critical emergency services infrastructure to significantly increase the resilience of the region.”
When we need the facilities of an improved airport, we are really going to need them – and that little bit of noise is far outweighed by the fact that we need to deal with fires – seriously. Pic – Ken Bell
An upgraded runway will improve access for Forest Fire Management and other firefighting services, providing greater flexibility for fire management services to manage local and regional fires. The next steps will be to engage with directly-impacted airport stakeholders and the broader community. • And already we are hearing rumblings about the potential noise from this supposed ‘increased traffic.’ The first thing we must do is not let a lack of knowledge impact on what will be a major improvement to facilities in this community. uch was the title of an article in the May 1950 edition of SKI-HORIZON magazine, the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs (F.O.V.S.C) which was formed in 1947. The journal included a regular item by members “Why I Ski” and Skippy St Elmo, pioneering skier at Falls Creek wrote about her passion for racing. Then 33 years old, Skippy had first skied only five years earlier when, newly married, she and her husband Toni spent the winter living in Wallace’s Hut. After the winter working as an assistant to the S.E.C hydrological surveyor Toni was offered a new post doing similar work measuring snow depths and water flows for the S.E.C’s Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. In 1946 the couple became the first full time residents of Falls Creek. Skippy’s introduction to racing came that year when Toni entered her in the first club championships held by the Bogong Ski Club at Rocky Valley. “Up to that stage,” Skippy wrote, “my skiing was confined to the practice slopes and it seemed like I had joined the ranks of ‘no hopers’ - getting nowhere fast.” With five minutes’ notice that she was competing in the open slalom Skippy’s ‘legs went to jelly.’ “I do not even remember going through the flags - perhaps I didn’t - still at the end of the nightmare run I was happy to learn that the third

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2020 Edition TWO
PROPERTY OF THE WEEK IMAJ Apartment 2
T
wo bedroom, one bathroom with a large balcony.
This property has everything you would need to enjoy a comfortable stay at Falls Creek. Located off the Falls Creek Road this apartment is in a good ski in and ski out location from the village bowl. The apartment is single level and features on entry a good sized ski room, separate laundry and drying cupboards. The open plan living & dining area is light and bright, and opens out onto a private balcony which is nicely nestled in the snow gums. The two bedrooms can accommodate six people, with a queen bed in the master bedroom and two bunks the second bedroom which is very spacious. The fully renovated bathroom is modern and presents very well. The location of the Imaj Apartments on Falls Creek Road is close to a skier’s paradise. It is within spitting distance of several local quality dining establishments, a couple of ski hire and retail outlets and offers easy access to the Summit and Eagle Chairlifts. During the summer months, (described as everything not winter), the location can be easily accessed by car with adequate parking out front or nearby. While the enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village. Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with some being accessed from the Village Bowl. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your
exploring, whether on foot, on a horse or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria. The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes the Alpine Challenge, the Mile High Dragon Boats, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the Easter Festival, Trails, Tales and Tucker Guided Walks as well as regular mountain bike shuttles. (See Fallscreek.com.au/events for a complete list). The Imaj complex has a new head lease to 2058, the approximate body corporate outgoings are $9,228 PA for 2020. This apartment has no management agreement and can be used privately. At $370,000 this apartment is definitely worth and inspection. Please contact Christa at Zirky Real Estate for further details or to arrange an inspection. Tips for keeping your older dog active and in good health. At about age seven you may notice your dog slowing down. An older dog will benefit from the following tips to keep him in tip top health. 1. Follow a good diet regime with as many natural meats and cooked vegs as possible. 2. Teaching new tricks by luring into position with treats. Lure a stretch. A sit. A stand from a laying down position. Anything you can think of while being mindful of painful joints and any health issues. 3. Let them sniff a lot on short walks. This wears them out mentally ensuring enrichment. Don’t rush them. 4. Give them treat dispensing toys. Again this wears them out and provides lots of great stimulation. 5. Swimming in warm weather is a great way to exercise whilst supporting ageing joints. 6. Vary their routine. Take them to different places. Let them experience new smells and places. 7. Ensure adequate bedding with good support in a warm space or crate. Most importantly, love your old dog! •
If you're trying to get yourself moving but aren't sure where to start, just start with small steps and go for a short walk! It might be around the block, taking in the beautiful autumn colours that we are currently lucky to witness each day. Or, it might be to a favourite location of yours, to take some time out for yourself, or let your furry friend burn some energy by enjoying the walk with you! Exercise doesn't have to be complicated or take a long time - what's most important is that you move your body in some way, get your heart rate up, and keep your muscles active, while also feeling some enjoyment, or seeing the positives in why you're doing it. With so many options available to us, we are spoilt for choice! Walk, run, ride, dance, yoga, strength training at home, online fitness classes, zoom training sessions with your friends... The opportunities are endless, and YOU get to decide what makes YOU feel good! Find what you enjoy doing that gets you moving. If you are struggling to come up with strength, conditioning and/or stretching ideas, head over to our Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage Facebook page for workout videos that offer exercise suggestions and demonstrations, where Lee and Emily go through a number of exercises sure to get your heart rate up and your body moving! •
• Isn’t it strange that every time a new season rolls around you feel like you have no clothes to wear? Well, never fear, because you can save the environment and your wallet by shopping second-hand. Now is a great time to buy second hand, as people have time to clean out their cupboards and rearrange. When Op shops reopen, great buys will be found. Also, check out Facebook marketplace, Ebay or Gumtree for great second-hand buys. • As the days get shorter and darker, our need to use indoor lighting increases. Think about switching to LED light bulbs, as they are a more energy efficient lighting source than other types of lighting. There is even a Victorian Government upgrade program, where rebates and discounts are available to households and businesses with incandescent lamps, halogen lamps & CFL. Checkout the Victorian Government website for more info. •

MISSING BOOK A copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Environment, Land Use and Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was left for this community in the care of Mr Bill Sutton. Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory. Please contact your Ed on 0400 350 488.

JUN 20th Charlie Brown Mountainside Photographic Exhibition. Opening is this Saturday the 20th June from 4-7pm and the exhibition runs for three weeks. Location is at Turkshead Gallery, 317 Wodonga place, Albury. It’s the building on the left at the start of Noriuel Park just over the bridge heading into Albury. The Social Distancing arrangements will be in place and there will be a couple of Whipps’s fire pits to keep people warm whilst they have a beer or wine and listen to some live music.
The Mount Beauty & District Men’s Shed were surprised on Wednesday 3rd June when Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club donated a cheque for $5000. The money was a donation from Lions District V6 to assist community recovery and mental health in fire affected areas. Mount Beauty Men’s Shed President Dick Puttyfoot said the Shed has so far missed out on its main fundraising income this year. Usually the members of the Men’s Shed man the gates at the Dederang/Mount Beauty Football and Netball Club’s home games and take a share of the proceeds. But local football and netball clubs have

so far not commenced matches because of COVID-19 restrictions. So this donation from the UKV Lions was most welcome.
LOCAL RADIO
Men’s Sheds assist men’s mental health by providing social and work activities and, while the sheds have been closed up until now during COVID-19 restrictions, they are beginning to open up again for their members as restrictions are being eased.

JUN 22nd The official announcement from the Premier’s Department that the Snow Season in Victoria can ‘officially’ start.
Many of the members of Men’s Sheds are in a high-risk age group to catch the coronavirus, so the rules of 1.5 metre distancing, washing hands and sanitising work benches will be strictly applied as the sheds get back to work. •
