FROM THE CEO Coronavirus and Avalanche Education… how are they related?

O

bscure as this might seem, I read a piece from an expert whose opinion and insights I value. The fact that he is a friend who I’ve backcountry toured with in Japan, and who is a professional guide and expert in the field of avalanche education (and explosives) is an aside. His perspective and the drawing in of risk to situations that are wholly reliant on personal choices resonated with me. His piece stated “I am finding that the problem of virus risk management is directly analogous to the problems we face in avalanche education; both are relatively low-frequency, high-consequence events where you can get away with a lot of being stupid before it catches up to you. We have found that most people, even after taking an avalanche course, continue being careless with their choice of terrain, conditions, and travel procedures until a close friend has a death, or they themselves have a near-miss”. In the ‘avalanche’ of coronavirus (COVID-19), we’ve been faced with the need to enforce or regulate behaviour to achieve a desired outcome for the collectivist good. No one likes to have their individual freedoms taken away. As I said in last week’s piece, that is why I love skiing - backcountry especially. I get to paint a canvas, my canvas with my tracks and my choice of how I ride it. But, the voices of every avi teacher I’ve had, the diagrams in every book I’ve read about backcountry risk, the routes taken where that choice was the right one, confirm to me that doing the right thing, making the smarter choice, and for what it’s worth, doing what we are all now required to do, is right, irrespective of the loss of control we feel we have been stripped of.

All the Australian resorts have grappled with this dilemma and worked through a myriad of externalities, unfamiliar to us all, to effectively be able to still deliver a snow season. By externalities, I refer to both the economic and the philosophical interpretation. For example, the capacity constraints that are being overlaid across the industry are commitments made to deliver a snow season, safely… and to deliver a stimulus into the region which has suffered terribly in 2020. Snow quantity (and quality – if you’re powder hound) have always been an industry specific externality. Snowmaking has been an innovation to counter this dilemma (consider it a vaccine if you will… something that in the current circumstance many are hoping for). But it is not the panacea. Speak to any of the snow making team to understand their frustration this season… rain, fog, wet bulb temps, humidity readings, huge mounds of snowmaking washed away by storms… they are all still combatants, not remedied, just mitigated. But with adversity comes ingenuity. This season is certainly adverse. Our resilient and tenacious stakeholders – in particular the accommodation providers and the food and beverage venues have all worked overtime to ensure safety is their priority. To deliver this, they have also come up with innovations to deliver experiences differently. Obviously, with limitations to venue numbers… getting the great grub (and regional grog) that Falls Creek is renowned for… needs to be served and delivered differently. Hours of operation and sitting times have been increased at seated dining venues, there are new online ordering platforms to avoid waiting, take away menus have erupted, ski thru pick-up windows have been installed and delivery

Don't go near the edge - simple common sense. Pic – Courtesy Google images.

services have evolved. Lounges have been turned into specialised boutique dining experiences and chefs tables, private rooms and venues catering to larger groups are being dedicated, après hours have been extended (who doesn’t come to a ski resort for the après)… The ski industry is about innovation… some good (parabolic shaping, reverse camber, king pin bindings, gopro, avi airbags, Rossi S7’s, synthetic skins, GoreTex – will take it, as it's changed weather proof gear despite being a medical invention), some bad (the mono ski, tandem skis, ski blades, onesies (except if you’re under 12), the buggy ski – google it!). So, get behind our innovative operators. If you can’t get out to support them, they’ll come to you… Now get online and order!! GETTING YOUR SKI FEET BACK One from the vault

W

ith a start to the season like this, ain’t nobody got time for sore feet. With a late start and the dreaded CoViD hanging in the breeze. So lets talk about at least getting your feet free from too tight face mask like discomfort. It’s likely been a while since you’ve stuck your feet in your ski boots (or any kind of boots if you have been ‘working’ from home) and now they’re not feeling the same as they used to. Or perhaps they feel as bad as you remember. At the risk of sounding too preachy let’s just say, new ski season, new beginnings! Get your feet sorted. There are a few reasons your boots could be feeling different than they did last year. Perhaps your boots are over five years old and the liner is starting to pack out. This will be noticeable by less control of your skis, more movement in the boot, or sore spots that ANZAC never used toDay hurt. Might be yearsnewbies. flash by; But the numbers time to consider he some let’s go of actual personnel on, what else could be returned causing service these issues?

T

Now lastly, if you’ve put your boots on and they feel crap, and they’ve all always felt like a bag of crap, it is time to get that crap sorted. Perhaps you need a new ski orthotic, some boot mods and a good lie down. Or perhaps you need to hear the harsh reality thatANZAC you’re just the Service: wrong 5:45am boot. Day in Dawn

THE WELL Collective Health Hub

W

e love seeing a new business plant its roots in our beautiful valley, and when it is as rich in offerings as The Well Collective Health Hub - even better! Fondly known as ‘The Well’, our valley’s latest addition was officially opened by Sam Willis and Christina Chettle in February this year. Sam, a chiropractor, and Christina, an osteopath, made the lifestyle change from city to country around three years ago when they took over an existing chiropractic business in Bright, with Sam also working from the Mount Beauty Hospital one day a week. When it came to the ultimate battle between settling down with their pending baby in the Ovens Valley or Kiewa Valley, we’re happy to report our wonderful community won Sam over. The family moved to their new home in Tawonga one week before baby Edie arrived in November, 2018. Christina says the goal was always for her to join Sam at the hospital as an osteo, but when

the lease for one of the new shop fronts on the Kiewa Valley Highway in Tawonga South became available, they jumped at the opportunity - and so the ultimate health and wellbeing hub was born! And the ultimate health and wellbeing hub it certainly is. As well as osteopathy and chiropractic, The Well also offers kinesiology with Heidi Vine, health and wellbeing coaching with Jenny Rowe, end of life doula services with Rose Sexton, clinical psychology with Louise Hayes, and quantum energy healing Jenny Rowe, Rose Sexton, owners Sam Willis and Christina Chettle, and reiki with Nancy Chalmers. and Heidi Vine; just some of the practitioners offering their health They’re also hoping to add and wellbeing services at The Well Collective Health Hub in traditional Chinese medicine and Tawonga South. We wanted to make sure those services are available to get the best outcomes possible.” The new business has been warmly welcomed by the community, and Christina said people have been very supportive, which is really comforting.

MOUNTAIN CREEK PROPERTY Financial Year in Review

T

he 2019/2020 financial year was Mountain Creek Property’s first full year of trading after its inception in April 2019 and I was forced to hit the ground running with eight properties listed for sale during the first half of FY19/20! As we neared Christmas, four were already sold and despite weeks of heavy smoke, risk of ember attack and no tourists in sight, buyer enquiry remained steady. By the end of January when the bushfire threats were starting to subside, all eight properties were sold and I was able to sneak away for a quick holiday to Tassie - a rarity when you’re a small business start-up and a one woman band! The average selling price of properties sold with the agency during FY19/20 is sitting at $479,888 and with two properties selling over $700,000, our beautiful township is experiencing a wave of rapid growth. Buyer mix was almost equally split between locals and newcomers, with the biggest trend being investors in holiday accommodation properties. Fortunately, COVID-19 has not affected our market significantly. There has been an influx of capital city residents who are wanting to make a ‘tree change.’ The silver lining of this global pandemic is that our nation has realised that working remotely from home is a progressive and productive way of working that seems to be here to stay. Many businesses in capital cities and regional towns have closed their physical offices and employ

staff on a remote basis instead, and I expect the population of our town is going to grow as a result.

Thanks to Buffalo Sign Co for their fantastic work.

Rentals are consistently in high demand due to lack of supply and return on investment is very healthy. Mountain Creek Property is currently offering a very affordable fixed price management fee for permanent rentals if you sign up before the end of July. See website for details.

Wishing all the local businesses and the wider community all the best for the winter season, and stay tuned for the Spring update with some stunning lifestyle properties due to be offered for sale. •

With the news of our ski resorts opening, there was a huge spike in seasonal rentals and a waitlist has already been established for next year. If you own a property or you hope to rent one for the next winter season, please email to register your interest.

Kind Regards, Courtney Sullivan, Director Mountain Creek Property

Some exciting news this month was a nomination as a finalist for the New Office Of The Year Award . I am looking forward to enjoying a champagne at the (virtual) Real Estate Business Awards night to celebrate and I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the community for your ongoing support. You may also have noticed a slight change to our name and branding. Formally Mountain Creek Property Management, the name has now changed to simply Mountain Creek Property to reflect the broad range of services offered by the agency, with bolder and more eye catching branding so you can easily see our for sale and rent signs from the road! Keep an eye out around town for the new Mountain Creek Property car coming soon.

LOCAL COMMUNITY TALENT Next Stop, Sumatra

I

t is really heart-warming to hear about the exciting careers that are being pursued by those born, bred and educated in Mount Beauty and surrounds. It seems we are often punching above our weight for the size of our small country town. This is story about one of our locals, who has gone from studying Indonesian at Mount Beauty Secondary College (MBSC) to managing conservation programs in Indonesia for Taronga Conservation Society Australia (Taronga) based in Sydney. Stephanie Hedt, grew up in Tawonga and attended MBSC from 2003-2008. It was here she picked up a love for the Indonesian language. Steph went on to an Asian Studies degree at ANU in Canberra and majored in Bahasa Indonesia. Her first job out of university saw her move to Sydney and work for the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia, as a translator and

policy advisor, working on bilateral and diplomatic issues. It was also during this time, she was asked to advise Taronga on its Indonesian projects, including design of a new Indonesian themed Sumatran Tiger exhibit. It was only a few years later that she accepted a job at Taronga as the Executive Officer, working directly with the CEO. Of course, in her ‘spare’ time Steph would work on Indonesia projects, including arranging the transfer of two Giraffe to a partner Zoo in Indonesia and running two fundraising tours to Sumatra with the CEO, raising over $1m for Taronga. In 2020, Taronga offered her the role of Project Manager, Sumatra Conservation Programs. This role is focussed on field conservation programs for Taronga’s Sumatra Legacy Species which include Sumatran Tiger, Sumatran Rhino, Asian Elephant, Sun Bear and Sunda Pangolin. The first project to protect these species is setting up a reforestation and community engagement program in Way Kambas National Park, which has begun with over 25 hectares already replanted by the community as part of a pilot project. This will be significantly scaled up over the next five years. To learn more about this project, you can watch an interview between Steph and the International Rhino Foundation here- https://youtu.be/YYqtX5qEXCI The second project is developing an Eco Tourism program to Way Kambas for domestic and international tourists. highlight of the eco-tour is meeting a Sumatran Rhino, the most endangered mega-fauna on earth, with only 80 individuals remaining. The aim of all these efforts is to build capability, financial and social security for the community surrounding National Park areas, in a sustainable way, which will protect habitat and wildlife into the future. Such an interesting and rewarding career, built here in the Valley. For the time being, Steph is based in Sydney but hopes to move to Indonesia as soon as possible! There are a few ways you can get involved in these projects. You can register your interest in joining a future Taronga Sumatra Eco Tour by emailing ecotours@zoo.nsw. gov.au or you can donate towards the Sumatra Legacy Species projects through the Taronga Website, www.taronga.org. au. If you are in Sydney, Taronga Zoo is a must visit, especially the one of a kind Indonesian themed Tiger exhibit! Steph wants to thank MBSC for sparking interest in Indonesia and encourages anyone learning Indonesian at school to continue with great possibilities for a rewarding career. •

LOCAL HISTORY Tragedy on Mt Bogong

companions had been caught in a prolonged snowstorm on Mt Bogong.

eventy seven years have passed since three ski tourers, 23 year olds Edward Welch and Georgina Gadsden, and 27 year old John McRae lost their lives on Mt Bogong. Members of a party of eight, they had left Tawonga on Sunday, 1st of August 1943, camping the first night in Bivouac Hut on the Staircase Spur. Not long after midday on the Monday, despite windy conditions and falling snow, Welch, Gadsden and McRae set off to continue on to the Summit Hut. When they did not return a few hours later the remaining five skiers left Bivouac Hut. After climbing several hundred metres or so, they turned back due to the poor visibility and strong wind. They set out again on the Tuesday but worsening conditions again forced them to return and they remained hut-bound in blizzard conditions until the Thursday.

In the years prior to these tragedies, Mt Bogong had become a popular destination for ski tourers but after the fatalities in 1943, the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) monitored the conditions closely. In the August 1946 edition of the club magazine ‘Schuss’ printed a warning headed ‘Bogong Out of Bounds’ and that “Snow is up to the eaves of the Bivouac Hut; the Summit Hut is completely buried; and only the chimney is showing on the Cleve Cole Memorial Hut. The new snow pole line is almost nonexistent, and the approach to Mt Bogong is in an extremely dangerous condition.”

S

In poor visibility at about 2pm, the rescue party (consisting of several of the original group and other rescue personnel) found the first of three pairs of skis. Then further on they located the body of one of the men huddled near the last exposed snow pole, the two other bodies further up, only metres apart. They were, it transpired, only about 20 metres from the Summit Hut which was completely covered by snow. (Whilst the Summit Hut did not save these lives, it did play a useful role as a shelter on the track near the summit of Bogong. Unfortunately it was destroyed by vandals in 1978). Sadly the holiday destination of the group on this trip was to be the Cleve Cole Memorial Hut, erected after the death of experienced ski tourer Cleve Cole who had died seven years earlier after he and his

Harold Gibbs Chairman of the SCV Bogong sub-committee, his wife Rel, Wally Johnson and Skippy St Elmo were part of the investigating party. With the snow poles covered by snow and experiencing heavy fog they found at times it was too dangerous to leave the hut. Eventually, with the peddle radio, Harold informed head office the mountain should be closed to all tourist activities.

Specials This Weekend Sat & Sun 9am – 1pm Saturday: Brie & Raspberry Pretzel Sunday: Hand-churned Dutch Doughnuts Pumpkin Soup & Sourdough Pea & Ham Soup & Sourdough Tomato, Ginger, Chilli & Garlic Soup & Roll Lamb Shank & Barley Soup and Sourdough Chicken Spinach Pie & Salad Spinach & Ricotta Cannelloni & Salad Beef Lasagne, Cheese Sauce & Salad Salmon & Pea Quiche & Salad Lemon Cheesecake Sticky Date Cake & Caramel Sauce Choc Fudge Brownie Plus: Coffee, Smoothies, Milkshakes & Kombucha

Visitors to the area who have taken the time to climb Bogong will have seen the Gadsden Memorial – a column erected in memory of Georgina Gadsden and her companions John McRae and Edward Welch towards the top of Staircase Spur above the tree line. A great way to enjoy climbing the mountain

CAUTIONARY TALES Secure Your Load

H

ow many of you have parked your car in a ski resort and returned to it a day or two or seven later to find it covered in snow? It is quite an awesome sight as it reminds you of all the snow that’s fallen and all the fun you just had in that snow. Often you are completely knackered from all that ‘freshie’ action and as you open the door all you can think of is starting the car, cranking the heater and heading for home as quickly as possible. You give the windscreen a bit of a clean, maybe the mirrors, headlamps and back-view a go too, and off you tootle. Somehow that 10cm slab on the roof was just too hard to get to and too much work - and let’s face it, as you head down the hill it's a pretty cool look because it shows everyone along the way that you got fresh snow and loads of it! Half-way down the hill, as the temp has risen and the car has warmed, you let it go a little on a slight bend and whammy! - the world goes white. That slab has just slid from the roof and completely covered your windscreen while you were nudging 80

clicks or so. Luckily it takes a split second to slide all the way off and you are left whiteknuckled on the wheel, fingers tingling from an adrenalin surge as it dawns that things could just have ended very badly for you. An on-coming car? Maybe even over the edge? Even worse; that slab could have sloughed off onto the windscreen of a passing car, or the fairing of a motor cycle or the helmet of a hard core cyclist and their day could have ended permanently. Here's the kicker folks - that little act is illegal. Not clearing snow from your vehicle is not only lazy and dangerous, but could get you pulled up by a cop and handed a fat little fine. They will get you for having an ‘unsecured load.’ From the Vic Roads (www.vicroads.vic.gov. au) website: "Loose loads can be dangerous, and sometimes fatal, to you and other drivers. It is an offence under the Road Safety Act 1986 and Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations if your load is not properly restrained and is at risk of falling from your vehicle." There are three kinds of risk categories with fines ranging from $345 to $3224 and if your load has caused damage to people or

property, where you can end up in court, worst case scenario is you could be on the receiving end of a hefty $11,000 hit to the wallet. So a little food for thought next time you are heading home from a ripper day at the snow; make sure you take the time to clear your vehicle of snow completely for the benefit of yourself and all the other road users out there. The best advice is to pack a little snow clearing kit in your car for winter trips including an ice-scraper, gloves and if it looks like ‘puking,’ one of those long handled window cleaners clears a roof beautifully. Stay safe, have fun and be good to each other. • Kim McKeown

ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODE Respect Gets Respect

A

s we move into a somewhat different snow season, there are some things that don’t change – and there are other elements that we must focus on even more seriously. The COVID-19 restrictions mean that we are going to have to be even more considerate of others – and that’s not really a bad thing. And for that reason alone, we again print the Alpine Responsibility Code to give everyone a chance to get their head around it. Ed.

1. Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air. 2. Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress. 3. Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury. 4. Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. 5. Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs. 6. Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them. 7. Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above. Look uphill and give way to

others when entering/exiting a trail or starting downhill. 8. Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment, even when riding chairlifts. 9. Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol. 10. If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol.

Know the code. It’s your responsibility. Failure to observe the code may result in cancellation of your ticket or pass by ski patrol or other authorised personnel. Respect gets respect - from the lift line, to the slopes, through the park and the resort.

Regardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities that common sense, protective equipment and personal awareness can reduce. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment. MISSING BOOK A copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Environment, Land Use and Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was left for this community in the care of Mr Bill Sutton. Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory. Please contact your Ed on 0400 350 488.

WHATS ON

FRIENDLY ADVICE Avoid Loss

FUTURE EVENTS

Try to keep a photograph of all items of value as this will assist the police to locate missing items and will also assist with any insurance claims you may need to make.

A

t Falls Creek hundreds, if not thousands of items of property are lost each season. This can cause distress and worry for the person who may have lost precious memories on a camera or contact details on a mobile phone, or sentimental value from a lost item of jewellery.

Something to look forward to!

JUN 20th Charlie Brown Mountainside Photographic - JUL 11th Exhibition. Location is at Turkshead Gallery, 317 Wodonga place, Albury. It’s the building on the left at the start of Noreuil Park just over the bridge heading into Albury.

Our local team in Blue also recommend where possible, on all items of clothing that you have a name and current phone number on it - especially on children's clothing. If you cannot engrave a name on a camera, try taking a photo of yourself in front of a whiteboard or something similar. On the white board have written your name or school with a contact phone number and our team will do their best to get your property back to you.

The local Police are recommending, where possible, you keep a record of these items with make, model & serial number and any identifying features.

Most importantly zip or button up your pockets whilst out on the snow, as in most occasions, if you drop an item into the snow it may not be found until Spring or Summer when the snow has melted. If you have lost or found something you can contact the Falls Creek Police on 03 5758 3424. •

Make a note to call in and have a look at Charlie’s exhibition in the next couple of weeks.

! DRIVING TIP !

JUN 26th Start Victorian, Queensland and NT School Holidays.

Chains are required to be carried in all vehicles going to Falls Creek for the duration of the snow season.

SEP 5th It’s a Saturday – and it will be the celebration of the 60’s kids turning Sixty! Kerry, Westie, Erin, Lynnie, Debb, Melissa, Bondie, Lisa, Fi, Gayle & Jenny! At The Man. The weekend includes Friday drinks at the Pan; Gang ski on Saturday; Party Saturday night and Recovery Breakfast at Elk on Sunday. Keep in touch with Kerry on Em: kerryleedodd@hotmail.com.
