WINTER EDITION SIX

FRIDAY 17TH JULY 2020

So Much to Experience!

Known as the friendly mountain, Falls Creek has so much more to offer all of our visitors. Top: Family Fun! Pic – Chris Hocking. Left: Just the odd snow-ball fight. Pic – Chris Hocking. Middle: Fat biking fun. Pic – Jiri @ Top Shots. Right: Pleasant company and pleasant dining. Pic – Matt Hull.

FROM THE CEO When Words Fail…

I

’ve tried to write this column three times and each time, I wasn’t able to properly convey or put into appropriate words what I wanted to say. Everything is just so out of whack, nothing really makes sense! Then it dawned on me. I feel off balance. This was the best phrase I could find that captured everything, without being either pejorative or an expletive! Speaking of expletives, I’m a big fan of Billy Connelly’s. He’s one of the greatest, albeit, original potty-mouthed comedians (actor, musician and writer) on the planet. Having that Scottish accent however turns his cussing into poetic hysterical anecdotes. To quote him, ‘a well balance person has a drink in each hand’. Which is great advice right now, be that whatever choice of beverage you prefer, water, wine or otherwise. This is relevant, how? Well, one of my favourite ski instructors when correcting my pole positioning told me to think of holding both hands out in front of me, like I’ve got two jugs of beer, one in each hand and try not to spill them and this will centre my balance. The instructor was Austrian, so I figured he knew what he was talking about regards both the skiing and the beer, plus being an Aussie (gross stereotype), it resonated perfectly. Genius. I haven’t spilt a drop since!

it. Emotions will escalate, opinions will be offered, solutions will be demanded. We are all striving for the best possible outcome in what is a tumultuous and unchartered period. We are all passionate about the mountain, our guests, livelihoods, and the fact that you simply couldn’t script 2020 into anything but a horror movie. A big thankyou to all the business operators who provided responses to our survey. I’ve mentioned frequently that the ski industry is a resilient one, used to adversity and uncertainty, but one that knows how to rally. The candour and openness provided in the responses will help on several levels to extrapolate the magnitude of the coronavirus COVID-19 impact on the industry and lobby for further assistance to our business operators. But the very pleasing metric was the overwhelming willingness of operators to remain open, despite the lifts being suspended. And more so, the 90% of respondents ready to reactivate if the lifts are returned to service on August 19th. At such Falls Creek Resort – remains very much open for business. It’s not business as usual, it’s highly unusual. The resort management board has resolved to continue providing access to the resort (as opposed to closing it), to support its village stakeholders, its restaurants and bars, the accommodation providers and the retail outlets.

All of us are feeling the pressure, disappointment, and frustration. But that melancholy can’t be allowed to fester. Yes, we all feel like we’ve been dragged to the principal’s office, kept in detention for something we didn’t do and are upset because we didn’t do anything and now it doesn’t matter what we do, we can’t fix it… (only analogy I could think of ).

The cross country network will continue to be groomed, albeit not to its usual world class standard, but pretty darn close (FYI the Hoppet has been cancelled too!), but up to 30kms will be cut in by the snow clearing and grooming team (when sufficient snow cover allows). The resort will begin a program to encourage day visitation to our restaurants by offering incentives to visit for the day and support our food and beverage operators.

That’s where we’re wrong. It is ok, not to be ok. And it is important to talk about

For those people in regional Victoria looking to escape the madness, stay two nights or

more and you’ll get free resort entry for the first two nights and discounts for every night thereafter (T&C’s on the website – www. fallscreek.com.au). For any locals or people in regional Victoria who missed out on a resort entry seasons pass and are keen to XC or do a little backcountry – keep your eyes on the website… For those who like to earn their turns, the good news is that all routes can lead back to resort, if you so choose. Resort management and ski patrol, in collaboration with Falls Creek Ski Lifts, will continue to keep the resort terrain in a condition that can provide the opportunity for in bounds touring to operate safely. The opportunity to investigate ‘backcountry’ experiences can be had with the safety of knowing that ski patrol will be available to assist if you get into trouble, have an equipment failure or find yourself in a spot of bother. Provided that you remain in the terrain that is marked ‘in bound touring’. Keep your eyes on the website for further details as these initiatives are finalised. Registration for this experience will be mandatory. The resort entry system will contain information on this and how to register. Our tour operators are also keen to activate as soon as is possible. Backcountry tours with Steve Lee, or Falls Creek Snowmobile Tours for those not looking to put a few turns in. Both are must do experiences. Soak in some history at the Falls Creek Museum – open Friday-Sunday, as well. Keep your eyes on www.fallscreek.com.au for updates and activations. The What’s On Guide and this esteemed publication will continue to keep you up to date on the latest information. Now, get out there. Support each other, be kind and keep your balance. • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

FALLS CREEK THIS WEEK Fire and Rain

W

ell, it’s certainly been an unusual start to the snow season this year. I could write chapter and verse about what didn’t happen and how that has made us feel as a Race Club Community, but how would that change what has happened? So instead I’m going to focus on the positives and write about how our Club and the community of Falls Creek has regrouped, reassessed and worked out how we can work with what we’ve got left. And I don’t need to tell you this: Falls Creek Resort is more than its ski lifts. It has been hugely impressive to see how the community of Falls Creek has rallied around each other and adapted to the situation we have all found ourselves in.

WE ARE STAYING OPEN! MEALS + LOUNGE OPEN From 4pm FRIDAY TO MONDAY

Experience the fabulous views & relax in the lounge whilst enjoying warm hospitality

10 Arlberg Street Falls Creek

Whether you are a year round local, long term returning winter resident, recent convert to winter citizenship or a holiday maker, I have seen time and time again over the past four days how people have united together to make the best of what 2020 throws at us all as a community.

cafes all had to make snap decisions to stay open or close. Some that closed offered us the fresh food bargains of the season by selling off their produce to minimise losses as well as wastage. Those that have stayed open are offering great deals to entice people in to wine, dine and caffeinate.

And I have to pause for a second to contemplate that last sentence. Past four days. Wow. I’m typing this on Monday 13 July at 3pm. It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost four days since the lifts shut down - effective immediately. Emotionally, it feels like it was something that happened weeks ago.

Doug Zollo from FC Snowmobile Tours is a black belt in Karate and is offering Karate lessons in the QT Boardroom on Tuesdays at 5pm as well as running the Snowmobile tours with Noreen Prosser (when snow permits). The Falls Creek Museum will hopefully open on Friday, Saturday & Sunday and has plans to increase its social media presence by doing narrated stories on items in the collection. Debbie Howie has a viewing platform so kids can watch doughnuts being made (& smell them cooking…yum). The Thursdays Ladies Ski Club has turned into the Thursday Ladies Cross Country Ski Club and will continue to support hospitality venues across the hill by ending the weekly ski session with drinks at a different location each week.

I’ve spent that past four days talking with people, asking how they are coping, what does this mean for them personally and if they know what they’ll do moving forward. I’ve never been prouder to lay claim to being part of a community. After the shock wore off, this village has sprung into action. Accommodation options were found for staff without anywhere to live. Some accommodation businesses decided to revert to summer pricing to attract regional visitors for snow play. Other accommodation venues have thrown a discount party to entice regional tourists to visit now. Restaurants, bars and

Steve Lee will continue to do his backcountry tours and has branched out into sight-seeing tours as well. Charlie Brown from Mountainside Photography is considering doing photography workshops. There has been mention of Snowshoe Tours and the possibility of adapting the Museum’s very successful Trails, Tales and Tucker walks for winter. The list of how people are adapting to our changed circumstances goes on and on. And Race Club is doing the same. We’ve pivoted and are in the process of working out how we can offer fitness and training options to those who are still on the hill. After all, we’ve been saying for years “it’s not how much time you spend doing gates that is important, but the time you spend on snow overall.” We hope our 2019 Head Coach Bernie Haider and his 2IC Stefan Gabner will approve of the options we’ve

FALLS CREEK THIS WEEK come up with to date. We already have a crew of 16 kids who are signed up for Cross Country Skiing lessons twice a week with the fabulous Margeaux from Windy Corner, all thanks to the fast work of club member Felicity Gould. We’ve got permission to move our Trampoline under cover at Howman’s Gap and are quickly working on creating a physical literacy program that includes trampolining for the kids. Club parents are offering to take kids on walks/runs/hikes. On good snow and weather days, we’re planning to take the kids out to earn their turns by hiking up and skiing or snowboarding down. We’re in the process of writing our COVIDSAFE plan so we can safely open the gym for race club kids aged 14 and up so they can continue to train under the supervision of an adult Club member. We are considering speaking to FC Resort Management and FC Lift Company about the possibility of using resort/hill space to build courses so the kids can hike up and ski/board back down under the supervision of an appropriate adult. Basically, if you can come up with a viable option that can be run by parents and keeps our kids fit, engaged and happy, we’ll consider it! So as I try and bring this article to a logical end, it’s fair to say that while the people of Falls Creek have seen fire and have seen rain, Falls Creek is resilient and knows how to adapt and survive.

The location of the Imaj Apartments on Falls Creek Road is close to a skier’s paradise. It is within spitting distance of several local quality dining establishments, a couple of ski hire and retail outlets and offers easy access to the Summit and Eagle Chairlifts. During the summer months, (described as everything not winter), the location can be easily accessed by car with adequate parking out front or nearby. While the enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village. Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with some being accessed from the Village Bowl. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot, on a horse or on your bike is endless. The Falls to

Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria. The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes the Alpine Challenge, the Mile High Dragon Boats, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the Easter Festival, Trails, Tales and Tucker Guided Walks as well as regular mountain bike shuttles. (See Fallscreek.com.au/events for a complete list). The Imaj complex has a new head lease to 2058, the approximate body corporate outgoings are $9,228 PA for 2020. This apartment has no management agreement and can be used privately. At $370,000 this apartment is definitely worth and inspection.
