ow, caution – this topic is always controversial and generally garners plenty of opinion.

been able to self-arrest... although having said that, Newtons Second Law of Motion dictates mass as the primary determinant of acceleration and resultant force… so stopping myself was probably unlikely!

Helmets – to wear, or not to wear, this is the question... this column is inspired by the (temporary) lack of snow currently on the ground for the moment, and the myriad of people itching to get backcountry on some sketchy depths with surprises lurking underneath a fickle snowpack.

My point of illustration in the above examples is to highlight how suddenly circumstances can turn on us... right place, wrong place, right choice, wrong choice. I choose to wear a helmet and it has performed brilliantly protecting me against others and my own risk taking.

As someone who’s follicly-challenged (yes, I don’t need to worry about helmet hair), the use of a helmet serves multiple purposes, primarily warmth, but also a place to put stickers (blatant bragging on where I’ve skied and wanna be sponsors), a bucket for gloves when at lunch and some cranial protection.

Not convinced, watch “the Crash Reel”... and several other movies centred around traumatic brain injuries, the use of a helmet when on snow, with two sticks or a plank strapped to our feet and on terrain that has varying gradients, the occasional obstacle, other people out of control... might suggest that anything which helps protect the grey matter shouldn’t be that tough a choice.

I am on to my eighth helmet (a combination of fashion, technological advancement and redundancy) and the use of such has saved my noggin four times since 2003. Twice through someone else taking me out (regrettably both snowboarders, but I won’t hold that against them...) and twice my own fault. For context, in accident no. 1 – said snowboarder crashed above me, tomahawked spectacularly directly towards me at warp speed and split my helmet with his edge. Whilst relatively unscathed, I can’t say the same for the poor boarder who continued on past me and needed a LOT of ski patrol assistance. Accident no. 2 – another boarder (also in Japan) who unfortunately must have only just learned or was in the process of learning how to crash really badly and take others out... similar result for my helmet. Accident no. 3 – phenomenal yard sale on Glory Gulch (Alta Utah) followed by a standing ovation from the lunch crowd at Alps restaurant and bar... if not for the helmet... concussion was a certainty. Accident no. 4 – Falls Creek... back country traverse in spring, ice patch, lost an edge, up and over onto my back then proceeded to slide 50m at pace head first into the remnants of a snow gum... I guess it’s a bit like insurance (note: dirty word in the Alps at the moment). Though you can choose to have zero, a little, or a lot – you ultimately make the decision to protect yourself, your family and your friends from the unknown... (or not). I choose to keep my head warm, the rest is a bonus. We’ve all got enough going on right now and need our heads to be in the right space (and place). So whack one on for good measure. Foodie Tip of the Week: to make the most of the Feast @ Falls promo and to help our operators, we’ve got no shortage of great food options to digest (pun intended). A favourite – Someplace Else Bar & Grill. Greg and his team have trimmed the menu down to burgers and sides this year. But trust me – this bloke knows his meat. A selection of dependable and gourmet offers will delight. It’s a great place to take a pair of teenage boys, with bottomless pits for stomachs... the ‘300’ is a challenge, for mortals, don’t eat before going. Plus, its great value for money, especially when the boys split another one (Fried Chicken) for good measure.

FALL LINES Avalanche Skills Training

here has been an explosion in people wanting to explore the backcountry and see what the Australian high country has to offer outside of the resort boundaries. However when stepping out of the controlled environment of the resort adventurers need to have the skills, knowledge and equipment to keep themselves and their friends safe. Falls Creek will be hosting both a 2 day AST1 course in line with Avalanche Canada on Sat 15th and Sun 16th August. In addition for those just finding their feet in the mountains or wanting to learn more about their new equipment Alpine Access are also gauging interest for an ‘Intro to Backcountry’ course on Sat 22nd Aug. Less demanding than the AST1 this is the perfect taster course for people looking to learn more about backcountry safety and travelling tips. Alpine Access Australia is an accredited Avalanche Canada AST Provider. They run AST1 courses in Victoria at the following locations: Mt Hotham * Mt Stirling * Falls Creek Avalanche Canada sets the global standard for providing avalanche awareness programs. Since it has become compulsory to wear masks in Melbourne, Mikaela and her partner Mohamed (trading as the Fresh Face Company) starting making masks to help the community. uring the 2019 June/July School Holidays Race Club facilitated a Concussion Awareness Information Seminar for our members. Frankie from Altitude Physiotherapy Falls Creek kindly ran the seminar to help parents and children better recognise the signs of concussion and manage a diagnosed concussion. The Club had hoped to run the same seminar again in 2020, but as we all know winter hasn’t exactly turned out as expected. So while we’re all adjusting to the unusual winter that we’ve been presented with, and our Race Club kids and parents are finding different activities to keep them active, fit and challenged, it’s worth remembering that

there are many sports that kids and adults alike participate in that can lead to a head injury and concussion. If you search Snow Australia’s website for concussion, you’ll find the following statement (amongst lots of other details). “All concussions are serious and may be caused by a direct blow to the head, face or neck, or by impact elsewhere on the body, with force transmitted to the head. It is a brain injury that can occur without a loss of consciousness that causes disturbances of brain function with resolutions usually proceeding smoothly over days to weeks, but in some cases, symptoms are prolonged,” coupled with the handy hint to “Remember: If in doubt, sit them out.” The Executive Summary of the “Concussion in Sport Australia Positioning Statement” that was co-authored by the Australian Institute of Sport, Australian Medical Association, Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians and Sports Medicine Australia in February 2019 states:

The residents of, and visitors to, Falls Creek are a pretty active lot irrelevant of the season. Mountain biking, ultra running, normal running, hiking, swimming, walking and road riding are all pretty standard outdoor activities at Falls in the green season. Throw in gymnastics, trampolining, circuit training, martial arts, footy, cricket, basketball, netball, roller-blading and rollerskiing as a starting point and we have a fair few sports where concussive injuries are reasonably common. The Concussion in Sport Australia Positioning Statement tells us that recognising concussion can be difficult. “The symptoms and signs are variable, non-specific and may be subtle. Onlookers should suspect concussion when an injury results in a knock to the head or body that transmits a force to the head. A hard knock is not required, concussion can occur from minor knocks.

There has been growing concern in Australia and internationally about the incidence of sport-related concussion and potential health ramifications for athletes. Concussion affects athletes at all levels of sport, from the part-time recreational athlete to the fulltime professional. If managed appropriately most symptoms and signs of concussion resolve spontaneously. Complications can occur, however, including prolonged duration of symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury. There is also growing concern about potential long-term consequences of multiple concussions. Over recent years there has been elevated public awareness of sport-related concussion and increased focus on the importance of diagnosing and managing the condition promptly, safely and appropriately.

CONCUSSION There may be obvious signs of concussion such as loss of consciousness, brief convulsions or difficulty balancing or walking. However, the signs of concussion can be more subtle.” “The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT5) identifies 22 possible symptoms: headache, ‘don’t feel right’, ‘pressure in the head’, difficulty concentrating, neck pain, difficulty remembering, nausea or vomiting, fatigue or low energy, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision, drowsiness, balance problems, sensitivity to light, more emotional, sensitivity to noise, irritability, feeling slowed down, sadness, feeling like ‘in a fog,’ nervous or anxious, trouble falling asleep.” One of the things that I love about Falls Creek is freedom many parents give their kids to roam around and play outdoors, reasonably free from the constraints of traffic, and other factors that parent’s worry about in more built-up metropolitan areas. A friend jokes that it’s like going back in time to the 1960s and 70s, when kids were

pushed out doors and given a simple set of instructions to not get in trouble and be back in time for meals or when it got dark.

However, with freedom comes risk taking. While tasking risks is an important part of children learning to understand boundaries and limitations as they grown up, it can also lead to injuries and consequently the need for recovery.

While we’re all adjusting to the unusual winter that we’ve been presented with and encouraging our kids to try different sports and activities to fill the void left by COVID-19, a lack of snow and lifts (take your pick in which order this trilogy should be presented), it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t have to hit your head hard to be concussed.

A consistent and growing body of evidence supports a slower rate of recovery in children and adolescents aged 18 and under. Given a more conservative approach to concussion is recommended, the return to learning should take priority over a return to sporting activities. When parents send their children back to school, teachers and parents may need to include more regular breaks, rests and increased time to complete tasks into their child’s daily routines. Additionally a child’s return to any sport program should be extended so

Astra Bar and Restaurant for the 2020 ski season. It was only weeks later to again face a COVID-19 forced closure like many other Victorian hospitality venues this July.

or the 2020 snow season Astra acquired some serious talent. David Featherston and Jock Ingram, both career chefs, were forced to close their restaurants in the first instance due to bush fires in the height of the season in early January 2020, and again in March due to the COVID-19 problems.

Not to be kept down, the lads are bringing the magic of Falls Creek to Bright where two of the best restaurants across the Alpine regions present their menu within the beauty of the heritage Victorian Cottage home of Elm Dining, Bright.

Both were devastated and forced on to the road to keep their businesses afloat, they sought out Astra Falls Creek. For those not aware, Astra had been awarded ‘Australia’s Best Ski Boutique Hotel’ for the past four years.
