FROM THE CEO We’re Half Way There…
T
he title reference is anchored on week 9 of what would be the midway point of a ‘normal’ season. A normal season, that’s right… something this one is not. We are currently bereft of snow, devoid of people and hostage to the tragedy of a pandemic! Nothing we’ve every endured or dreamt of before. We’d normally be celebrating the Falls Creek Primary School legends dominating Interschools and preparing for Nationals, I’d be reinforcing the relevance of snow chains, referencing the Blizzards of Oz, promoting Ski de Femme, lamenting about being too old to compete in the Big Air in the Ruined Castle park, hitting the rails at BLT, congratulating the winner of the Australian Police Games, preparing my team in anticipation of ‘the Ramble,’ bracing the village for the imminent arrival of sled dogs and exaggerating about my intentions of competing in the 30th Anniversary of the Kangaroo Hoppet which would be well underway for the 3rd weekend in August…etc etc. Alas, when all else fails, revert to Bon Jovi… As much as I’d never have thought Bon
Jovi would be prophetic enough to quote in this column, their lyrics have a peculiar resonance with our current predicament. No… I don’t have them in any of my (current) playlists, but they are a favourite on a radio station I listen to… and to my surprise, when accompanied by the music, I also know their lyrics (put that down to a misspent youth!!). Apart from ‘living on a prayer’ it’s time like these when we do need to be thankful for ‘what we’ve got’ …let’s be honest, we could be in Melbourne.
In all seriousness, the industry has a resilience... In all seriousness, the industry has a resilience (defn: the ability to recover quickly from difficulties), a character forged across generations, built from founding families and improved with the injection of new blood into the resort and the valley in recent years. We have great businesses, an industry leading resort, unsurpassed in its
appeal and picturesque beyond a fault. Anyone tenacious enough to make a living out of investing or running a business that is dependent on the ficklest of gods has courage beyond compare! At present, there is little else we can do but look forward to next season, begin preparing for it and encouraging our ‘fans’ to work with us as we come out of the greatest shock, not just too our industry, but Australia and the World. On behalf of the Falls Creek Alpine Resort Management Board, our employees, our residents and community, I’d like to personally thank all of our stakeholders in resort, our partners across the valley and the many businesses who contribute to the journey that leads to our mountain. Thinking about 2021 seems insurmountable right now, but it will be here before we know it. Sincerest thanks. • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management For further support, try this link: https://corporate.fallscreek.com. au/2020/08/04/mental-health-resource-list/

2020 VIRTUAL KANGAROO HOPPET With Big Names Lining Up
W
ith the disrupted ski season and many challenges felt in the community from the coronavirus pandemic, the organisers of the Kangaroo Hoppet have created a virtual event to bring the international community together. The 2020 Hoppet – Do It Your Way, gives participants the flexibility to be part of the biggest snow sports event in the southern hemisphere and our region’s truly premier international sporting event. In summary, participants can choose their distance and activity type and log on to the results and share experiences via the website and social media pages. More information can be found at www.hoppet.com.au The event, as befitting an international sporting event, has attracted some very big names from the skiing world including the undisputed King of Norwegian Marathon skiing and World and Olympic gold medallist, Anders Aukland. The Hoppet is very special to Anders as way back in 1993 he won the event, making it his first of many major international victories. Anders younger brother, Frederick, took 3rd place in the 2001 edition. Anders is still an elite marathon skier and has a huge fan base over the world.

Joining Anders will be Betsy Youngman (USA), winner of the inaugural event in 1991 and Olympic Silver medallist Peter Schlickenreider (GER). World Champions from other sports are also joining the field this year including our very own World Moguls Champion Britt Cox and the ever-enthusiastic World Mountain Bike Champion Paul van der Ploeg. Event organisers are delighted to have such successful athletes as part of the field for 2020, but the event is about bringing everyone together. Local primary school kids from Tawonga and Mount Beauty will be involved along with a large international popular contingent. Event Director, Ben Derrick, said the entries are really starting to come in. “When we planned the virtual event we were hoping to provide something to keep people motivated to exercise during our restricted activities. The response has been fantastic and we are getting close to 500 entries so far and expect that number to increase greatly in the next few weeks. Almost half our field is international so we are really excited that we will be sharing stories from people across the globe as part of the event.”

Entries are only $10 and that includes a souvenir neck-warmer (really funky) – and doubles as a face mask when you’re stuck. Ben continued “that the event is not run for profit but just as a way to keep a great community together and expand our alpine activities across the globe.” Further information on the Kangaroo Hoppet can be found at www.hoppet.com.au. •

LET'S BE POSITIVE Good News Matters
T
he news coming out of Melbourne on Sunday 2nd August regarding a return to Stage Three restrictions was disappointing to say the least. It is so unfortunate that small number of individuals has disobeyed the government regulations resulting in a return to lockdown for the whole of Victoria. For everyone in regional Victoria, this is upsetting news. I know in times like these it’s hard to find positives in a world intent on taking control and choice away. It feels trite for me to encourage people to find beauty in the small everyday things such as a picturesque view or the sighting of a beautifully coloured bird. However without these small pleasures, it can be easy to get despondent about the challenges faced with online home schooling, working from home and restricted interaction with family and friends. So I’m going to make you a promise for the next six weeks. I’m going to find positive things to write about. The articles often may not be about Falls Creek Race Club, and they may not always be related to competitive club snow sports. However I will find something positive, informative and (fingers crossed) possibly entertaining each week to regale you with. On that note, it is with great pride that Falls Creek Race Club congratulates Ella Green, Maddie Hooker and Poppy Buscombe for completing their Level 1 Nordic Instructor Certificate. Most years our Race Club Kids aged 15 years and over would be able to complete their Level 1 Alpine Instructor Certificate during the season. The Club

is extremely proud of how these three ladies adapted to the situation and snow conditions to progress forward with their skiing goals and embraced certifying for the Nordic discipline. Some people may not realise that a lot of race club kids are skilled Nordic skiers and regularly do well in cross country ski competitions via events such as the Interschool’s competitions having been introduced to the sport through the Falls Creek Primary School and/or their parents. Race Club is also very proud to relay Snow Australia’s announcement confirming club members Finn Bowes and Robbie Morrison in the 2020-2021 National Alpine Ski Team. “The team selected, based on Snow Australia’s selection criteria, consists of 14 athletes across Alpine and Ski Cross. These athletes, competing on the international stage, are performing to a high international standard measured against their individual age groups and continue to develop in line with their international peers. The team includes some of the country’s most experienced Alpine and Ski Cross athletes, including Olympians Greta Small, Harry Laidlaw and Sami Kennedy-Sim. In line with the Alpine Strategy and Plan, Australia's alpine team aims to deliver strong, competitive performances on international circuits. The current team are all well-placed to continue to build on these results.” This is Finn’s second year on the National Alpine Ski Team skiing in Slalom and Giant Slalom disciplines and Robbie’s second year on the National Alpine Ski Team competing in the Ski Cross discipline. Finn lists his career highlights as

representing Australia in international competitions as a teenager and being selected into an elite training academy in the United States, and says he loves competing because “it’s a complex battle where you are simultaneously working with and against gravity meaning that it not only requires strength and skill, but also a sharp mind.” Robbie lists his career highlights as 2nd place at the 2019 Austrian Championships, 12th place in the 2019 Pitztal Europa cup, 2nd/3rd place in the 2019 ANC, 5th place in the 2018 Word Juniors, and says he loves competing because “ski cross allows you to let loose and have fun. All the courses vary and there is always something different. It encompasses, I feel, all aspects of skiing and allows you to compete alongside three other ski racers, which adds a whole new level of excitement. It’s is a technical discipline to understand and you need to have a good sense of awareness in the air. For me I loved free skiing, carving through all the natural bumps and terrain and jumping off anything I could, which I guess is much the same as ski cross and made me love the sport.” Well done Finn, Robbie, Ella, Maddie and Poppy! •

BLOODY LONG WALK For Mitochondrial Disease
M
itochondria are the ‘energy factory’ of our body. Mitochondrial diseases are longterm, genetic, often inherited disorders that occur when mitochondria fail to produce enough energy for the body to function properly. One in 5,000 individuals has a genetic mitochondrial disease which causes multiple organ dysfunction or failure. It can affect anyone at any age. The Bloody Long Virtual Walk challenges you to walk or run 35km from 1st – 10th August to raise money to research a cure for mitochondrial disease (mito). No matter what your age, location or fitness level, you can join the Mito Movement to get active, maintain a healthy lifestyle and achieve your fitness goals. Their website: www.blooodylongwalk. com.au asks you to select your location from a list of the state capitals and a few large regional centres. They seemed to have forgotten good old down-town Mount Beauty, Tawonga South and Tawonga – because it was here that a dedicated group of locals took part in a special walk last Saturday 1st August. To support a local lady dealing with Mitochondrial Disease, a group of locals and friends got together and walked from Crank Handle Brewery in Tawonga South to the Old Tawonga Store and Park

THERE IS GOOD OUT THERE Find It!
T day.
elling people to keep their chins up and be positive during this pandemic is getting harder by the
If it wasn’t recovering from the fall out of the bushfires last summer, going through the first six weeks of lockdown, having the lifts at Falls Creek suspended, being mandated to wear masks in public, going back into Stage 3 lockdown, it was perhaps the final nail in the coffin - the announcement that the lifts wouldn’t be operating again for the winter season. On the first day we were required to wear masks, I saw a post on Facebook asking people how they were finding the experience, and one man had commented, “It’s the worst day of my life!” I thought to myself that if wearing a mask is as bad as it’s gotten, he must have lived a rather fortunate life, and it got me thinking about how - despite all the challenges we’re facing - we do still have so many things to be thankful for. We may have to search a little harder, but if you look really closely, I think you’ll find them. Like how during my morning walks, the
brief smiles I’d usually exchange with people I pass have been replaced by short conversations; wishes of “Have a nice day!” and “How great is the weather?” And it’s actually really nice. Going back into lockdown for many means more time with our families. We talk about “losing an entire year”, as though it is a considerable amount of time in our lives, but when you consider how much time you’ve ‘lost’ working, running errands, or attending events – which has now been replaced with so much more time spent with your family, it’s actually rather wonderful. The guilt I sometimes feel for eating takeaway when I realistically could have cooked a meal at home has been replaced with the joy I find in knowing I’m supporting a local business during a tough time, and the excitement of potentially bumping into people I know for a wave and quick socially distanced chat while I pick up my food.

MISSING BOOK A copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Environment, Land Use and Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was left for this community in the care of Mr Bill Sutton. Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory. Please contact your Ed on 0400 350 488.

THERE IS GOOD OUT THERE And restrictions also mean we appreciate more than ever how lucky we are to have such a wide range of businesses locally that can provide us with nearly everything we need when travel isn’t easy, and realising how important it is to support them so they don’t disappear.
socially distanced and have to adhere to restrictions when we’re yet to have a case of COVID-19 in our valley, it is actually a rather small price to pay for the safety of everyone around us in the short term.
Pleasingly, it appears that all of the locals have adopted the wearing of masks and all seem to be doing the right thing. Ed.
But whatever you are feeling during these challenging times, please make time to speak to your local GP. You can also call Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14. • Simone Dowel
Financially, this year will be the hardest for many - especially small business owners - but I also think about how I would feel if I lost a loved one to this terrible virus. Economically, we can bounce back. The tourists will visit again and with international travel off the cards for a while, there’s a chance the next few years will be some of our busiest and most profitable yet.
Sometimes you have to wonder. My office is on the Bogong High Plains Road in Mount Beauty, beside the Thrifty Link Home Improvement Company. In the last couple of days I have witnessed people (family groups) riding past, to and from the main street, on their bikes – no masks (OK they’re exercising) and NO helmets. What
