T

he phrase quoted above is referred to as the Sendai Framework or program. It is a United Nations concept adopted on 2015, which represents a holistic understanding to use a disaster as a trigger to create more resilience in industry and societies than before. This is ‘achieved through the implementation of well-balanced disaster risk reduction measures, including physical restoration of infrastructure, revitalisation of livelihood and economy/industry, and the restoration of local culture and environment.’ The framework has many applications and many levels – however it’s key attributes encompass recovery, reconstruction and

rehabilitation as priority actions. Following this year’s bushfires and devastation wrought across the entire North East and Gippsland regions, both environmentally and economically, the trauma is still omnipresent. Coupled with the tragedy of coronavirus (COVID-19), the shocks stemming from it and what will be a negative legacy not seen by any of the generational cohorts tasked with its rebalancing, there’s never been a more pressing time to adopt the ‘Build Back Better’ state of mind. It would be fair to say, we are still very much just coming to grips with these shocks and not yet ready to address what that recovery might even start to look like. However, our communities are rich in ideas, creativity, collaboration and spirit. The recently established community bushfire recovery committees are morphing into more general recovery committees and are

a great opportunity for local communities to contribute to the process, especially the reconstruction and revitalisation phase. The committees have been formed and they are seeking community input, ideas and concepts to capitalise on the grants available to kick-start projects and get the process underway. Creating a reason to celebrate communities coming together and staying connected during this time is critical to repairing the damage done and importantly building resilience and healing. I would encourage everyone to seek out their local representatives and contribute to the consultation that is needed to build agreement on key projects and community needs. What better distraction than taking action. A great article on this very topic is available here: https://hbr.org/2020/05/are-you-stuckin-the-anxiety-distraction-feedback-loop - I highly recommend investing five minutes to read it. It is relevant for many at the moment and I’m confident we could all take the time for a little distraction to help refocus and work on Building Back Better! • Cheers, Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

PUBLIC NOTICE This paper, and our contributors, are working extremely hard to be positive and care for the people in our community. Some time back we mentioned mental health. If you have a tax problem – you go to the best tax agent. If your car blows up – you go to a very good mechanic. If you get lost – you would want the best SES personnel looking for you. Therefore, if you are feeling a little down – then you seek out the best advice possible.

And if any of these outfits don’t suit, talk to our local Mount Beauty Medical Centre on 03 5754 3400 and any of the great team will be very happy to help.

2020 VIRTUAL KANGAROO HOPPET A TIME TO Do It Your Way

W

ith over 200 overseas entries representing 26 nations across four continents (plus New Zealand sitting out there in the Pacific and Iceland out on the mid Atlantic Ridge), we are looking at the biggest international contingent in the history of the event. Over 700 people are already set to be part of the event with a range of different activities in store. Some people are skiing (even in Europe and North America where they can get access to glacial trails), running, road cycling, mountain biking, walking and even swimming (although this person has only entered the 7km!) As the calendar moves past August 10 the event is officially open and it is time to realise your plans for where, how and when you will take part. Great event gimcrackery is available for all who enter. Okay, it’s only a neck-warmer, but it is a really cool once-ina-lifetime design – and neck warmers are in high demand at the moment. Great T-shirts are also available to order. Following feedback from entrants living under the strict COVID-19 restrictions in Melbourne where you are restricted to one hour of exercise per day the rules have been changed to allow you to take several days to complete the longer events. The 2020 Hoppet is really well supported by AGL and the Mount Beauty Bendigo Community Bank. Please support our great community organisations as they get behind our local international event. Last, but by no means least, can we also invite you to enter the two other virtual Worldloppet events being held this month in the southern hemisphere. The Ushuaia Loppet in Argentina http://www.ushuaialoppet.com/ es/ and the Merino Muster in New Zealand https://www.merinomuster.com/ . Stay safe. Stay healthy, and be part of something great! •

he years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public. Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. FATHER'S DAY A Touch of History

D

id you know that the history of Father’s Day was not founded by a Man? The inspiration, in fact, came from a 16 year-old daughter who was attending a church service honouring Mothers in the Mothering Sunday Church Mass in Spokane, Washington USA, with her widowed father and five siblings. As she listened to the sermon she thought ‘if it was good enough to honour mothers, then why should her devoted and loving single-father and men like him, not be honoured for the work they did to raise their families’ (David Roos). Despite being only 16, Sonara Smart Dodd (18.02.1882 – 22.03.1978 devoted the rest of her life fighting for the right for Fathers like hers to be officially recognised and honoured like Mothers were. She distinctly remembered her father, William Jackson Smart, as a kind, loving and devoted family man to her and her brothers and sisters. He took on the role of Mother and Father despite losing two wives. He was also an American Civil War Veteran. Sonara commenced her campaign by writing to Church Leaders, Civilian Right Leaders and Politicians. It wasn’t until

1972 when President Richard Nixon officially recognised the importance of the day and declared it a holiday in honour of the role of fathers in families. It had taken over 60 years for Sonara’s dream and valiant efforts to come true! It is interesting to note that there was NO commercialism or pretence involved in Sonara’s plight – just a loving young daughter wanting to recognise the love, values and beliefs of her wonderful father and men like him! Sonara wanted the day to be 5th June – her father’s birthday but had to settle for the third week in June instead. In these crazy times of COVID-19 isn’t it nice to know that some beautiful stories can come from the land of marketing and commercialism. Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand celebrate Fathers’ Day on the First Sunday in Spring (6th September 2020). As a Cake Decorator, Elene Wood thought it

would be nice to see if folks were interested in purchasing a gift pack of assorted cakes, slices and biscuits that would be suitable ‘Man Cakes’ (as one of her brothers used to call them)! She hasn’t finalised which ones she will make but they would include: cake slice, cupcake, cake pops, and two decorated cookies with a Fathers’ Day Theme presented in a gift box and mini card with a message for the special person in your life. The cost would be $35.00. If you prefer a Decorated Mud Cake, Elene will be making seven inch cakes with a Fathers’ Day Message for the Special Price of $40 for the occasion. These can be Chocolate, Vanilla, Lemon, Red Velvet, Raspberry or Salted Caramel flavours. Free delivery is offered to Mount Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South on the day. A delivery fee for deliveries further afield will apply.

CREATIVE DOWN-TIME Cost Effective Marketing ideas

S

ME’s of all types have to look after their pennies but they also need to market their business. It doesn’t really matter what type of business, you still need to market yourself or your business in some way. When money is tight, marketing is often the first casualty, so I decided to put together a few ‘cost effective’ ideas for all of you cash strapped SME businesses out there! Now I’m not saying that all of these ideas will work for all businesses but there will be something here for most of you. 1. Build a website using free ‘Open Source’ web building platforms - This is much easier than you think when you use platforms such as SEO Toaster or Open Cart. The beauty of a website is that it allows you to direct people to a good source of information and it is trackable marketing! You get to see via Google Analytics what people look at etc. 2. Social Media – There has been a lot of hype around the use of social media for business and I have to say that it’s not as easy as creating a Facebook or LinkedIn page, or opening a Twitter or Instagram account. It takes work, and not all social media platforms suit all businesses BUT it is a very cost effective way to communicate with your audience. 3. Write and publish articles – If you are a subject matter expert, flaunt it! You can write and publish articles on many different subjects and these articles build your profile. You can publish on your social media pages such as LinkedIn or even Facebook but you can also send them to Industry magazines and e-zines. If it’s a well-written article with

good information that people want to read, you will get published! 4. Direct mail / email – Hopefully you have been building a database of contacts! This is one of the easiest and best methods to communicate with your clients and prospects. With the use of free email Apps such as MailChimp.com, you can create and send very professional looking email blasts to your database. Your message right in their inbox! Even old fashioned mail still works, especially if localised. 5. Social Networking – Networking often gets a bad wrap and people think of pushy ‘AMWAY’ type sales people. With websites such as MeetUp.com and BNI.com.au you can find suitable networking events that fit with your particular interests. You can even start your own! Nobody sells your business like you, so word of mouth, your mouth, is a great way to get your message out there.

Monday and Tuesday is $20 Pasta Night. Tagliatelle with your choice of sauce and a slice of garlic bread. Wednesday Night we offer our delicious slow cooked classics with the menu changing weekly. Freshly baked sour dough loaves available Mon, Tues & Wed nights from 6pm. Pre order recommended.

Hopefully this article has given you a few ideas of the types of things you can do to save money but still promote your business. I am sure there are lots more great ideas out there too, so why not let us know? Good luck with your marketing strategy, and I hope this helps your budget! And in this current COVID-19 situation, our down-time could be spent being creative and working towards developing future strategies. • Dave Williams

When considering your marketing strategy,

are now open! restaurant

With this in mind you can then look at some of the above examples and put together a marketing strategy to get your message to the world.

6. Speaking Engagements – This isn’t for everybody but there can be opportunities where you can speak at an event and show your expertise. Steer clear of spruiking your own business but make sure people know you’re an expert. They will come to you afterwards if you were informative. Always try and leave them wanting more!

LOCAL HISTORY The Skiing Swaggie

L

ate afternoon on Friday 21st August 1936 four ski tourers stumbled into Cope Hut. Their journey from Fitzgerald’s Hut had been a ‘white hell.’ Their entry in the Cope Hut visitor’s book provides some insight of their experience: “Terrific N.W. wind with maddening drift snow as well as snowing intermittently. Owing to hard icy patches we had often to shoulder our skis. Never will the members of the party forget the ordeal of literally crawling over the ice to this hut from the pole line.” The men, members of the Ski Club of Victoria (S.C.V.), were dismayed to discover that they were immediately compelled to venture back out into the blizzard to collect wood. The scarcity of firewood was totally

hide (self-tanned), rope and wire, and his ‘ski boots’ were rubber waders. For stocks he used a couple of sharpened snow gum sticks with cross-pieces tied on with wombat hide for handles.”

Four days later another entry provided some details of this lone occupant. He was, according to Bill Robertson, “surely the most extraordinary snow traveller in existence.” The description of the man was akin to that of the swagman who walked the roads of rural Australia, getting by on transient labouring jobs and living off the land.

The extraordinary circumstances of the encounter with the solo traveller above the snowline led to one of the S.C.V. party talking to the press. An article titled ‘The Mystery Man of the Bogongs’ appeared in the Sydney illustrated magazine, ‘Smiths Weekly’ on 12th September (http:/nla.gov. au/nla.news-page25420477). The ‘skiing swagman’ identified as H Price, was a ‘sterling bushman - quite self-contained in a Robinson Crusoe fashion.’ He had made his two bowie knives, ski bindings, leggings and carried a rifle, frying pan, billy and a possum-skin sleeping bag.

“He was literally dressed in rags, and although he carried a self-made wheat-sack pack, he had very little food. His skis were a couple of slabs hewn out of snow gums with the natural bend from the trunk to limb forming the upward toe turns. Each was over seven feet long, one being a few inches shorter than the other. The bindings were an indescribable mixture of wombat

awonga Primary School had planned to run a Virtual Hoppet event at school last Thursday 6th where students could run/walk around the school’s 400m track. Students had been running three afternoons a week in preparation for the event and for their upcoming annual skiing program. Stage Three lock-down but a stop to the event and ski program so the school has moved the event to their flexible and remote learning school program instead. Students have been set the challenge to keep active while in lock-down and post in their Google Online Classroom an activity. So far students have been riding, walking and running then logging their activities. Two active students even set themselves a huge goal to run 21km which

they have already completed. Principal Kim Franzke believes it is even more important during lock-down that students stay active so is encouraging daily physical activities as part of the school’s program. Pic – Ben Charleton
