FROM THE CEO It’s Official…

A

s many regular readers would know, much of my pre ski resort career revolved heavily around interpreting numbers… all manner of numbers, spotting anomalies, capitalising on discrepancy and profiting off misinformation, or the failure of markets to exhibit rational, efficient behaviour. It didn’t take me long to draw parallels between my old world, financial markets and my present role, especially the rational part. A ‘random walk’ probably draws the closest description of my analysis between certain statistics and what brings people to the mountains. There used to be a strong correlation between reported snow depth and visitation. In economics and financial markets, the ‘random walk theory’ suggests it is impossible to consistently outperform the market, particularly in the short-term, because it is impossible to predict stock prices. The same could now be used to understand the dynamics that in a normal season drive resort visitation. The comforting news however amongst all the heartache, disappointment, anger

and frustration experienced during 2020 is that as a snow season, it ranks as the worst year on records kept by Falls Creek Alpine Resort. Now, before a number of people start challenging the above statement, please appreciate these stats only go back to 1991, with any confidence, consistency in methodology and regularity. (Note: yes, there are number series and sequences which had been collected prior to this, from numerous sources. I quote ONLY from those entrusted to resort management. For an example of other stats, the Falls Creek Museum has a collection). Admittedly, there have been no snow years prior to this one, late seasons too… but for the point of this article, I’m trying to highlight that for a rare few, not too many of our operators have experienced it and to take some of the sting out of this ‘shocker’, this fact, it’s a little solace, knowing that if we had to have a shocker, the tragedy of COVID-19 hasn’t spoilt a ripper year. As I write this, Falls Creek is forecast to receive a reasonable dump over the next few days. Not enough to cool the already warming ground and have the snow stick

around for long. I mean, spring shouldn’t be here yet, but who hasn’t noticed all the early blossoms, magpies swooping already and the abundance of ‘red robins.’ Who knows, even the Bogong Moths might come early (substitute for the locusts that generally follow when disasters of biblical proportion occur.) For our agriculturally inclined readers, the good news is it’s forecast to be an above average wet spring. The BOM released today that it is raising its status on La Nina… which when combined with a negative IOD (note: its currently neutral but trending to positive) the chances of above average rainfall across much of Australia during spring is now at 70% (that’s three times the average likelihood). So, to close out this season, that is what officially remains (closing Oct 5th), if you enjoy skiing elephant snot (google it, it’s a ski slang term – apologies to anyone who’s easily offended) …looks like your wishes have come true. However, what better way to sum up the year! Cheers! • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

PUBLIC NOTICE This paper, and our contributors, are working extremely hard to be positive and care for the people in our community. Some time back we mentioned mental health. If you have a tax problem – you go to the best tax agent. If your car blows up – you go to a very good mechanic. If you get lost – you would want the best SES personnel looking for you. 2020 VIRTUAL KANGAROO HOPPET Do It Your Way - Update

T

he Hoppet 2020 is about to set a world first – with entries pouring in from around the world. At the time of going to print there are still quite a few days to go before the conclusion of the event and well over 1,000 participants from 29 countries had registered. And, in what is surely a world first, the event organisers are finalising an entrant from Antarctica! This will make our 2020 Virtual Kangaroo Hoppet the first sporting event in the world where all seven continents have active participation (unless someone can name one that has already happened?) Anyone got a Guinness Book of Records handy? With a few days to go for registration, the event organisers are hoping to surpass the record Hoppet field of 1,588 from 1993.

nquiry into the 2019-20 Victorian fire season. The Inspector-General for Emergency Management (IGEM) would like to provide an update on progress of the independent Inquiry into the 2019–20 Victorian fire season. Inquiry Phase 1 – Preparedness and Response The Phase 1 report focusing on the preparedness for and response to the 2019– 20 Victorian fire season was delivered to the Victorian Government on 31 July 2020. Inquiry Phase 2 – Relief and Recovery Phase 2 of the Inquiry focuses on the effectiveness and progress of relief and recovery activities and arrangements during and after the 2019–20 Victorian fire season.

We would like to hear from individuals and organisations about: • how the 2019-20 Victorian fires affected you. • what worked well in the delivery of emergency relief and recovery activities during the first six months. • what didn’t work as well as you would have expected or preferred. • your suggestions for improvement. We also recognise the added challenges the coronavirus emergency is having on bushfire recovery, and encourage individuals and communities to share these impacts during the engagement process. Submissions addressing the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference for Phase 2 can be made through: • completing the online submission found at www.igem.vic.gov.au.

ENJOY YOUR WALK …And Listen

A

ustralia gave the world some firsts. The Hills Hoist, the wine cask, and… song birds! Yes, that big group of birds that not only call - but sing. They evolved first when we were Gondwanaland and when that split up they went with the islands and triumphed in golden gargle contests around the globe. Songbirds have up to eight pairs of muscles controlling their voice-box, and some use both windpipes coming from their lungs, so their song can be complex and varied. Calls and song are used to attract the other sex, to warn of threats, to assert possession of territory and to touch base with the flock. The morning carolling of the magpie is saying something like “Hi all, Kevin here, and I'm still here patrolling my patch” (and as we get in to Spring “looking for cyclists!”)

So on your regular walk or cycle, listen for the birds. In fact you'll likely hear more than you see. Locally we are blessed with some delightful little guys and some of the smallest, like the Brown Thornbill (pictured above), are also the loudest. You can see the thornbills at the moment on the Pebble Beach walk looking for insects and also trying out wattle nectar.

There and on the Rockpool walk you can also see the striking yellow and grey Eastern Yellow Robin (pictured left). It'll be tossing around the leaf litter looking for insects and spiders or perched on the side of a gum waiting for one of them to move. You may also hear an Eastern Whipbird couple near Pebble Beach or the Rockpool. He does the whip crack and she may, or may not, immediately add a 'tiu' or 'tiu tiu' to the end of it. It sounds like the one call and I guess that's true love for you. On the grassy patches around Mount Beauty you are likely first to notice the Redbrowed Finch (pictured right) when you flush out a foraging flock. They'll perch on shrubs nearby to watch you pass. The town side of the Pondage walk is a good place to spot them at the moment. In the mild conditions so far of this winter up around Falls Creek you may well hear the modest call and see the spectacular

FROM THE ARCHIVES Keeping Warm

T

wo weeks ago I said in this very publication that I would find something positive, informative and (fingers crossed) possibly entertaining each week to regale you with. I may have set myself up for failure. However there is nothing like a challenge and a looming deadline to focus the mind, coupled with the horror of remembering two days ago that I had completely forgotten to write an article for last week. This week, I’m talking about hand warmers. Why? I found a lone hand warmer in my toiletries bag when I was unpacking last week after a desperate dash across the border to get home before NSW went into ‘hard’ lockdown. This sad mangled example of emergency warmth made me remember

my own experiences with hand warmers and how much relief these little nuggets of heat can bring to you to slow freezing to death on any chairlift that is stuck on windhold while it’s sleeting.

allowed to light the hand warmer, my Dad always did that job for reasons that I still can’t fathom (maybe my brother trying to set my eyebrows on fire had something to do with it).

Hand or Pocket warmers are small (often disposable) packets which can held in the hand, inserted into a purpose built pocket of a glove or put into a trouser or coat pocket and produce heat on demand to warm cold extremities. They are commonly used in outdoor activities, and depending on the type and the source of heat, hand warmers can last up anywhere from 15 minutes up to 13 hours.

I remember said hand warmer, but I don’t really remember getting to use it that much which was a crying shame as I spent a lot of my time in the snow seemingly on the verge of hypothermia from being wet and cold because my Dad’s attitude back then was “I’ve paid for it, so you’re going out there.”

The first hand or pocket warmers that I can remember from my childhood in the 1970s & 80’s came in a felt covered metal case that in my youth I thought looked vaguely like a tiny, tinny jewellery box. Imagine my disappointment when it opened and a saw a long lump of charcoal inside instead of the beautiful jewels I had imagined. I was never

MEDICAL CENTRE Thank You

they become a COVID issue and we thank our patients for their patience (no pun intended).

M

ount Beauty Medical Centre would like to say a big thankyou to our wonderful community for their help and support over the past six months. We have received delicious meals, cakes, chocolates, easter eggs, biscuits, gowns and masks to help us through this very extraordinary and complex time. There are literally too many people to name. Our staff have experienced the kindness which has helped us get through each day and keeps us coming back the next day.

We live in such a wonderful town and surrounding area, have such a kind and caring community and we know that if we all take care of each other as best we can, then we will get through this crazy time.

To keep our staff and our community as safe as possible we ask that people use the hand sanitiser at the front door and throughout the practice, keep their distance from each other and the front desk and use face cover (masks) at all times.

Thanks everyone. Mount Beauty Medical Centre

We encourage patients to use the option of a telehealth or phone consultation (and these are all bulk billed) rather than physically presenting at the practice or if you feel that a face to face consultation is needed, then we are happy to see you at the practice. Please contact the practice to discuss what is best for you.

We appreciate your patience when our receptionists go through the same number of questions each time you walk through our front door. We know this is frustrating for everyone but we need to ensure that we identify any health concerns before

Our Mount Beauty Medical Centre doctors are on call 24 hours seven days a week so
