MORE MOUNTAIN BIKING With Fabulous Trails

F

alls Creek is thrilled to announce that we will be receiving a Regional Infrastructure Grant of $500,000 for the Stage 5 development of the Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park. Currently hosting 40km of world class gravity and cross country trails, this funding will see the expansion of the Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park to include a further 11km of flow and technical trails and provide the opportunity for riders of all levels to transition through the park. Stuart Smythe, Falls Creek Resort Management CEO stated, “The Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park is designed to appeal to a wide range of mountain bike riders from beginner to expert.” “Increasing the number of trails will add a new sense of excitement to the park and entice riders near and far to test their lungs and skills in this magnificent alpine terrain” said Stuart. Once completed, Falls Creek hopes to see immediate benefits to the community with increased visitation to the resort

from November through April. After the devastating effects of the bushfires in at the beginning of the year, closely followed by the Victorian Government’s declared state of emergency, many of the local business have been severely impacted with little to no tourism to the region since the beginning of January 2020. Chair of the Falls Creek Resort Management Board, Jo Shannon extended her thanks to the State Government. “Their support as we recover from the bushfires is imperative and assists us greatly in implementing the Board’s strategy and increasing year-round visitation and tourism to the resort and surrounding North East region.” Falls Creek Resort and the Alpine National Park is closed to visitors during the current restrictions in Victoria. The resort looks forward to welcoming visitors back once the Chief Health Officer deems it safe to do so and current restrictions ease. • These extra 11km of trails, when added to the existing 40km, plus the 30km of aqueduct trails and the management vehicle tracks around the Bogong High

One of the great features of our trails is that there is always plenty of fantastic scenery and the bulk of the trails lead back into the village. Pic - Matt Hull @ themattimage.com

Plains will continue to keep Falls Creek at the forefront of mountain biking in this country. At this stage, the Ignition Mountain Bike Festival is still planned for the weekend of 20th – 22nd November, 2020. Ed.

PUBLIC NOTICE This paper, and our contributors, are working extremely hard to be positive and care for the people in our community. Some time back we mentioned mental health. If you have a tax problem – you go to the best tax agent. If your car blows up – you go to a very good mechanic. If you get lost – you would want the best SES personnel looking for you. Therefore, if you are feeling a little down – then you seek out the best advice possible.

2020 KANGAROO HOPPET We Did it Our Way

A

group of Upper Kiewa Valley locals had planned to do the 2020 Kangaroo Hoppet, on bikes, along the Rail Trail in the Ovens Valley, enjoying flat tracks, coffee and lunch. Stage Three restrictions put a stop to that, so… on Sunday 16th August, having looked at the weather forecast, a dozen or so of the group set off at various times on various routes. Here are some of their stories. Carol and Michael. We managed to complete our goals for the Hoppet 'Do It Your Way' challenge on Sunday morning 16 August on our hybrid bikes, as did a good number of our regular Sunday bike ride friends. Unfortunately we had to 'go it alone' as we are not allowed to be in groups. Carol stayed mainly to the

north and east of Mount Beauty along Damms Rd and Mountain Creek Rd with a few laps around the streets of North Beauty and down to Pebble beach easily completing her 21km in under her goal of 1.5 hours. A fine effort, and without her knee giving up! Michael completed two laps of the loop (Damms Rd, Mountain Creek Rd, Kiewa Highway) with a few side trips along the river walk at Tawonga Caravan Park, Pebble Beach and Ropers Rd. On the way home 'Old Timers' set in and the odometer ticked over 41km so he proudly got off his bike at Dom Glass's Bogong Steel shed and promptly took photos of appropriate proving pointers. He got back on the bike and it struck him that the Hoppet is 42km NOT 41. He repeated the photographic session right outside of Jim Crebbin's place on Maddison Ave. Mmmmm, that happens when you get old!! Keith. "I decided to do a ride I have not done for about five years, mainly because I know it is just about 42km. I rode to Mongan's Bridge, and back into Mount Beauty using Mountain Creek Road and Damm's Road. Luckily, because it was in the middle of our restrictions, and a Sunday, the highway was very quiet; only

one car all the way to Red Bank. Again, very lucky, because it was quite foggy along there early in the morning. I met one other rider all the way there; and only met others as I rode back along Damm's Road. Of course, I have to confess that nowadays I use a little power from my electric bike......but as little as possible!" Janet. “As a recreational cyclist, who rides 15 to 20km twice a week, I thought 42km on a rail trail with coffee and lunch breaks, with friends, would be fun and a challenge. Then Stage Three arrived. So 42km on our undulating roads, on my own, no lunch or riding with friends and rain forecast, was a bigger challenge. On Sunday, I did it my way, waiting for the calf to be escorted across Damms Road, waving to friends as we passed and stopping for coffee at Rocky Valley Bikes and a socially distanced chat. Thanks Hoppet 2020 – Do It Your Way, for the opportunity to participate in this year’s event, and congratulations to all of our group who committed to the event and, great to hear that everyone achieved their goal.” Phil R. As a regular road cyclist the 42kms to complete the ‘2020 Hoppet –

2020 KANGAROO HOPPET in some cases on multiple occasions, with a friendly wave and words of encouragement. A quick coffee stop with Bryan and Glenyse at Rocky Valley and before we knew it, it was mission complete with many achieving personal bests in the process. Well done to the Hoppet organisers for a great community day out – socially distanced of course. • There is more to this story – and therefore, the second instalment will be published next week when we also give you the final figures for this year’s 2020 Kangaroo Hoppet – Do It Your Way! Congratulations to all who got involved – and to the organisers whose creativity produced a fabulous community event.

Do it your way’ was not going to be too strenuous for me so I warmed up with a 50km ride to Bogong Village the day before. Last Sunday, with the weather looking overcast and rain forecast for later in the morning, the more comfortable mountain bike was dusted off for our ride around the local roads. The ride had a real community feel to it as countless cyclists, all riding in accordance with social distancing guidelines, crossed paths,

SOCIAL MEDIA In Print

I

hope you’ll indulge me this week as I’m going to talk about Social Media in a paper publication, as incongruous as that may seem. Three years ago I took over the running of the Falls Creek Race Club’s Facebook page, and also created an Instagram profile for the club. This wasn’t the first time I’d gotten my hands dirty by becoming an Administrator for a Club Social Media profile. From 2014 onwards I’d been one of three Chorki Ski Club members who’d set up a Facebook page for the ski lodge and beach house in Lorne in an attempt to improve bookings and engage with our guests and members alike. So when fellow Race Club Committee member Leah Breen asked me if I’d be

interested in taking over Race Club’s Socials, I knew what I was getting into. But I have to admit that I came to the job with a couple of goals in the back of my mind: • Build engagement with club members. • Foster a greater sense of community amongst club members, irrelevant of which program you do. • Be as inclusive as possible to the broader Falls Creek community. • Try and change perceptions in regards to the elitism of Race Club and, • Have some fun. Almost three years later I think some of these goals have been achieved. With this season being cancelled I’ve mined the photographic archive (and the Trophy shelves) for content to post about, but there has been a benefit to this as it has encouraged connection and discussion about past Club goings on that otherwise wouldn’t have occurred. People have sent

As a serial volunteer, I’m also involved with the Falls Creek Historical Society. Last year I volunteered at the Museum on Tuesdays. I can’t claim to have done it entirely out of the goodness of my heart. I did it partly because I’m crazy about vintage ski gear and volunteering at the Museum lets me fuel my vintage ski addiction without actually purchasing more stuff. So while we were all stuck in Lockdown 1.0 I had this silly idea that I’d offer to help the Museum build their social media profile on Facebook and Instagram. I’d been chatting online with some North American ski museums for a few months and thought to myself if we could show people what we have in our museum, we could get more

FATHER'S DAY Find it Locally

Pierre and co at Alpine Outfitters (the Mount Beauty Post Office) have a fun range of outdoor gear like Yeti car fridges, coffee cups, themos style cups, real good stubbie holders, hoodies with local detail, Patagonia clothing, Go Pro cameras, sunnies, Father’s Day cards and scratchies – plus heaps more!

I

t was pleasing to learn that Father’s Day was actually created by a daughter who wanted to celebrate the great job her single father had done raising five children. It is also pleasing to learn that you don’t have to go to Albury Wodonga to find a decent gift for your dad this year.

North East Home Improvement Co and Mount Beauty Hardware have a great range of gifts for dad – from home handyman tools, mowers, chain saws whipper snippers, exercise gear, camping gear, worklights, torches, UHF radios, Car cleaning, polishing and detailing kits, drones and lots of socks and undies at the hardware store – always a favourite. Pozzie has a heap of Tradie gear – socks and undies also.

Our local businesses have a great range of products and services that will certainly make your dad happy – and in these trying times shopping locally for dad has many benefits. A massage voucher from any of our local masseurs would be an ideal pamper present. It could be as simple as a special pre-ordered Father’s Day cake from Elene at Studio E Cakes (refer Edition Ten). Or, it could be a pre-ordered ordered Brunch from Deb and the team at SeasonsMB. Call in and see Deb before Thursday 3rd September.

So there you have it. There is plenty to keep dad happy and you can show him you care by supporting local businesses. So with nine days to go, now is the time to start looking! •

What about a great photo from Charlie Brown at mountainside.net.au. Charlie has many years of experience and a good range of stock. Check him out.
