GRINDURO AUSTRALIA The Good News and…

E

arlier this week, Falls Creek Resort Management, in conjunction with Grinduro Global, announced the decision to postpone the Grinduro Australia gravel race until December 2021. The good news… The event, originally scheduled for December 5th 2020, was to be the first of its kind in Australia, joining an exceptional global series. Blending traditional gravel grinding with MTB enduro racing and a huge post-race festival, Grinduro has taken the cycling world by storm with its unique format. Falls Creek Resort Management had postponed launching ticket sales under the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and then made the decision to push back the event one year. Falls Creek Event Supervisor, Nick Buckley explained the core reason for postponing the event was one of community safety. “Despite our best efforts, Falls Creek Resort Management made the difficult decision to postpone the Grinduro Australia event until December 2021.

We know how disappointed our riders, sponsors and community will be. It was a decision we have reached in conjunction with the Grinduro Global family. Knowing we have to keep people safe first and foremost, it’s clear to everyone that unfortunately, now is not the time to host this amazing event.” “The spirit of Grinduro There are just so many fabulous trails and tracks to ride around Falls Creek and is community, riding, the Bogong High Plains- and these will make next year’s Grinduro a fantastic event! Pic – Matt Rousu eating and partying together. Hosting With additional time we can now deliver an anything less than this is not an option. We even greater experience to the riders. prefer to offer this unforgettable experience in 2021 in the way that it should be Falls Creek Alpine Resort is temporarily enjoyed” notes Buckley. closed under the regional Victoria Stage Three restrictions. Rest assured, Grinduro Australia is going to be bigger, better and more epic on December 4th 2021 (conditions and government restrictions permitting). We’ve mapped out the most spectacular gravel riding route in the High Country, lined up stunning local flavours for hungry racers to feast on, and are planning a post-event party to end all parties.

For Great Take-Away

“Falls Creek and the local businesses within are ready to welcome visitors back to the High Country when the Chief Health Officer deems it appropriate.” “The gravel riding on the Bogong High Plains rivals the best in the world and I’d encourage riders looking for a new destination to ride to come and have an adventure at Falls Creek.”

Falls Creek Alpine Resort is open all year and Grinduro Australia is set to return to the Bogong High Plains on Saturday 4th December 2021. For further detail, please call: 03 5758 1200 during business hours. •

MEMBER FOR BENAMBRA A Message for the Premier

M

ember for Benambra Bill Tilley MLA has called on Daniel Andrews to provide an assurance he will lift Stage Three restrictions before the school holidays. The Victorian State parliamentarian fears the Premier’s reluctance to detail the exit strategy from Melbourne’s Stage Four lockdown has serious implications for regional Victoria and could potentially lead to the continuation of the current restrictions. Mr Tilley said NSW had shown great faith in the region by agreeing to open up the Border and that belief should be mirrored by the Victorian Government. There is yet to be an active case recorded in the Benambra electorate that includes Falls Creek and Mount Beauty.

Mr Tilley said he was not advocating a free-for-all. “The fear is the Premier is going to come up with some modified version of Stage Four for Melbourne and Stage Three for up here that carries through the school holidays – he’ll call it something different, but it will have the same effect,” he said. “We should be able to travel freely in the region, but Melburnians need to stay put.” “Back at the start of August, Daniel Andrews own press release said he would put a ring around Melbourne to protect regional Victoria. That didn’t happen, we’ve had every man and his dog up here doing work that could be done locally and reports that Melburnians are staying at their holiday apartments in the area, when nearby locals who are following the rules can’t even get access to the National Park, is an absolute joke.”

THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE It’s Up To Us

S

ometimes in life it helps to ask! That’s what nurse Roslyn Bloomer did and it’s paid off for every mum or dad in the Alpine region. Two weeks ago Roslyn logged on to an on-line event on Raising Girls, featuring one of the world’s best parent educators, Australia’s very own parenting author and psychologist Steve Biddulph. The event included over a thousand parents and was broadcast from Manningham Council in Melbourne. Watching from her home here in Mount Beauty, Victoria, and being aware of the high levels of stress and suffering among bushfire affected families all across the region, she thought about how much these talks would assist parents in supporting the mental health of children and youth now and ongoing. She thought “I wish we could have this presented for parents in the Alpine and Towong Shire.” Steve’s talks are funny and touchingly honest, but at the same time are very moving and provide a lot of practical help for families who are wanting to keep their children safe, happy and hopeful.

The next morning Roslyn wrote to Biddulph and he responded straight away, and the rest is history. Steve had been acutely aware of the terrible bushfire effects on mental health, let alone the effects on homes and livelihoods of the Alpine region, and had been wondering what to do. However, trapped by the current restrictions caused by Covid-19 in his home state of Tasmania, he was unable to travel. “Roslyn’s email made my heart leap” he said. “Reading about smoke affected little children, and the first-hand accounts of losses to suicide was heart wrenching.” He decided to offer not one but three different on-line talks at NO cost to parents, carers and educators in the Alpine, Towong and East Gipsland Shires. His production team who produce the events were also excited to help. ‘Raising Boys,’ the first and best known talk, has had influence on the way we look at childhood and development of boys and men. This talk is very helpful for dads who want to get it right with their sons, as well as mums raising boys on their own. Parents of boys of any age will gain a lot from the presentation. It's been presented live on four continents to over 130,000 people.

Great community enterprise shown by Roslyn Bloomer here with the new bub. Pic – Courtesy the family.

‘Raising Boys’ will be streamed on-line for FREE for parents in bushfire affected shires on October 8th 2020 at 8pm. The webinars for ‘Raising Girls’ and ‘Secrets of Happy Children’ will also follow a few weeks later. One thousand (1000) tickets are available for each webinar - one per household. 2020 KANGAROO HOPPET Attracts Record Participants

T

he Australian and international skiing community has rallied around the 2020 Kangaroo Hoppet, Australia’s international ski marathon, with 1894 participants from 37 nations taking part in the virtual ‘Do It Your Way’ version of the event. The Kangaroo Hoppet is the largest annual international snowsports event in the southern hemisphere, and part of the Worldloppet series of international ski marathons held across 20 nations. The cross country skiing event has been held annually at Falls Creek since 1991. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on social gathering and international travel, the normal 42km, 21km and 7km cross country skiing events were replaced by a virtual version in which participants could complete the distance of their choice, using the activity of their choice at any location over a three week period. The participant field included 475 internationals taking part in a multitude of activities across all seven continents. Two keen enthusiasts completed their Hoppet event in Antarctica, one skiing and one walking. Past event winners from Norway, Germany and the USA also took part. Activities included running, walking, cycling, swimming, roller skiing, inline skating, paddling, canoeing, mountain

biking, exercise machines, and, for the limited number of Australians with the opportunity to ski at Perisher, Falls Creek, Dinner Plain and on Big Hill, cross country skiing. Feedback from participants to the organisers has been overwhelmingly supportive of the virtual edition of the event, with many Victorians in Stage Four lock-down saying how great it was to have something positive to work towards while living with coronavirus restrictions. ‘The support from our local community has been fantastic in two ways’ said Hoppet Chairman Allan Marsland. ‘First it was the ongoing commitment from our community based major sponsors AGL and the Mount Beauty & District Community Bank whose support gave us the basis from which the organising committee could confidently go ahead and organise the event. The second area of support that was quite unexpected has been the number of locals taking up the challenge to be part of Hoppet 2020 in their own way – the final number being 377. •

I was disappointed. I am glad to rollerski loops at Baker Park reserve with my friend Dave Anderson and be a participant in the virtual event. Wishing all well in Australia and looking forward to ski the real race when the pandemic subsides. David from Richfield, Maine, USA Hi You All there down under, it was a nice, warm and a little windy biketour beside Torne River here in Swedish Lappland. Best wishes to You All. Maria, Pajala, Sweden Thanks so much for organising, it gave me the challenge of getting up before sunrise & a long hike through a favourite area of the southern Peloponnese in Greece. Mary, London, United Kingdom. Nice idea to spend summer until next snow and to be part of the worldwide X-country world! Lukas, Emmendingen, Germany Excellent race from our friends down under. Kristbjorn, Isafjordur, Iceland

From Around the World I had all the travel plans arranged to ski your event except for registration. Then you cancelled registration which was appropriate.

2020 KANGAROO HOPPET We Did It Our Way

H

ugh and Nola. The biggest challenge was choosing a dry spell; it's okay to finish a ride wet, but starting in rain is definitely not on. The Skey household covered an aggregate 65.22 km, 21.78 by Nola and 43.44 by Hugh in respectable times which included stops for conversation and ‘comfort.’ Times are on the web site. Much use was made of KV Highway, Damms Road, Mountain Creek Road, Embankment Drive and Pebble Beach path. No pain so probably not much gain, but a really worthwhile thing to do under the circumstances. There's got to be a future in this. • Ian and Beth. Beth was told to dress for the occasion so dressed as Minnie with Mickey in the panniers. Ian prepared for a ski race

with one downhill ski and one XC ski in his back pack. Gravity, stability and sensibility dissuaded him from carrying them. Our route was around the Loop once and quite a bit more, then Pebble beach, coffee, pondage etc until we had clocked up over 42km. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and we arrived back just as more serious rain started to fall Thanks to the organisers of ‘Do it your way.’ • Bruce. I have been riding about 21km every day in the hour we are allowed in Melbourne due to the COVID-19 restrictions. So I thought I had to do something a little different for Hoppet 2020 but still do the 21km within the hour limit. I decided to do laps of the 'Teardrop,’ a one km circuit off the Boulevard near the Kew Boathouse - a sort of time trial. I rode the 21kms in 42 minutes and 12 seconds at an average speed of 29.9kph. It was as much a mental test as a physical one, but one I enjoyed and I'll be going back again at some time to try and pick up the 0.1kph to round off the average!! •
