PEAKS CHALLENGE 2021 The Good News

P

eaks Challenge Falls Creek prepares to return to the High Country. Tickets for the 2021 event became available from last Monday, 31st August. Plans are being made for Bicycle Network’s Peaks Challenge Falls Creek cycling event to return on Sunday 7th March 2021, with tickets now selling – with almost 300 entries taken up on the day they were released. Running for the 12th time, the event draws more than 1,500 cyclists from across Australia to Victoria’s North East for one of the world’s toughest and most gruelling bike rides. Event organiser Bicycle Network is committed to protecting the safety of all event participants, volunteers and communities with new COVID-19 event risk management plans. Bicycle Network spokesperson Anthea Hargreaves said that after months of uncertainty, Peaks Challenge Falls Creek will be a welcome return for bike riders and local communities.

1852 riders entered the 2010 event which turned out to be a horrendous day – wet most of the way – with riders getting very cold going up Hotham and pulling out at Dinner Plain. But, the event has grown, improved and is now World class. Pic – Ken Bell

“Peaks Challenge Falls Creek will be a beacon on all cyclist’s calendars. After struggling through 2020 there will be no better feeling than struggling through 4,000 metres of climbing over 235 kilometres,” said Ms Hargreaves.

The Peaks Challenge Falls Creek course starts at the top of Falls Creek before taking on three key climbs up Tawonga Gap Road near Mount Beauty, then up Mount Hotham and up the back of Falls Creek starting at WTF corner near Anglers Rest.

“The event will draw visitors from all around Victoria and be a great financial boost for the area, with participants booking out accommodation and local community groups receiving donations from Bicycle Network for assisting with the ride.”

Those who finish within the 13-hour time limit will receive a coveted Peaks Challenge Falls Creek finisher’s jersey, while $3,000 prize money is also available for the King and Queen of Peaks who ride the fastest time up the three climbs.

OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY Meet Kelli Prime

W

ith the Alpine Shire Council elections taking place this October, it’s great to see both existing councillors and new candidates put up their hands to represent their community for the next four years. Between now and the election, we want to share as much as we can with you about the candidates so you recognise their names when it comes time to vote. As a voice for the Upper Kiewa Valley, we’re especially interested in members from our own community who are running, with the first brought to our attention being Kelli Prime. Having lived most of her life in the Alpine Shire, Kelli believes she has a unique understanding of local issues. Growing up on her family's dairy farm in Tawonga, she attended Tawonga Primary School and Mount Beauty Secondary College. Weekends consisted of junior netball for Dederang Mount Beauty Football Netball Club and Pony Club in Bright. After completing secondary college, she moved to Wodonga to undertake a degree in Physiotherapy and has spent nine years working as a Physio in Australia, England and Northern Ireland. In 2018, she returned to the Kiewa Valley with her partner, Michael Christie, and together they purchased a farm in Upper Gundowring where they run sheep and beef cattle. She continues to work as a Physio whilst running their farm and milking cows in her spare time. Since moving back home, Kelli has become a member of the Upper Gundowring Hall committee and (when allowed) continues to play netball for Dederang Mount Beauty FNC. Kelli says Local Government should represent a diverse range of viewpoints

and engage closely with the community to ensure voices are heard and the specific needs of the region are met. With her local knowledge, family background in farming and almost 10 year career in health, she believes she would bring a fresh perspective to the Alpine Shire Council. If elected, she will advocate for: • Improved healthcare and health support services including mental health. • Support of agriculture and its recognition as a major contributor to the Shire. • Practical support for local businesses. • Recycling and reusing initiatives for residents and visitors; and • Increasing community engagement so a diverse range of viewpoints are represented Kelli says she would embrace the opportunity to work with the local community in the area that she loves and has always called home (no matter where she’s been in the world)! She'd love to hear your thoughts on the future for the Alpine Shire and you can get in touch by emailing hello@kelliprime.com.au, or through her Facebook page - www.facebook.com/ kelliprimeforalpine.

Alpine Shire Council 2020 elections will be held via postal vote this year. Registered voters will receive a ballot pack from the VEC in early October 2020, and this completed ballot pack must be returned by Friday, October 23 2020 for your vote to count. Your vote is your voice - don’t miss your chance to have your say count! If you’re running as a candidate in the Alpine Shire Council elections this year, we’d love to hear from you too - shoot us an email at kencbell@bigpond.net.au. • Simone Dowel

LOCAL HISTORY The Antarctic Connection

T

here have been times when our fabulous cross country ski trails have been wind-swept and cold (not this year though). The visibility has been vastly reduced by the blowing snow and the ice covering the lake could well have been a scene from Antarctica, be it a March scene where the sea ice around the coast is just beginning its winter freeze. In fact, the dam has been a picture with the ever changing patterns of ice along the shoreline. Each day it has been a source of mystery to see how the ice has formed or dispersed, the different colours telling the story. With sea ice, the first sign of freezing is evident from the greasy or oily appearance of the surface which occurs when individual ice crystals form and then coagulate. This is known as ‘frazil’ ice. In calm conditions

it then forms thin grey sheets 5-10cm thick, as this ice thickens the grey colour deepens and, at about 15cm, becomes a grey-white colour. The next stage is usually the formation of ‘pancake’ ice, the most beautiful period in the formation of sea ice. Wind and wave action cause the frazil crystals to coagulate, eventually consolidating into small circular discs of ice, or pancakes. Collisions with other discs results in a raised rim not unlike a lotus leaf. Snowfalls accentuate the shape and in calm conditions with new frazil ice forming between the pancakes, the patterns are quite stunning. At various times – the colder the better – the ice on Rocky Valley Dam has formed patterns of varying ages of ice very reminiscent of the Antarctic waters. It is close to the boat ramp that the more tangible connection to Antarctica lies. To

many, the old corrugated iron clad structure is known as the ANARE Shed. It has been there so long that most people would not even appreciate that ANARE stands for Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions. The first ANARE base was established on Heard Island (1947), followed by Macquarie Island (1948), Mawson (1954), Wilkes (1959 and replaced by Casey in 1969) and Davis (1957). In the early days the Antarctic Division headquarters was located in Melbourne. With only one ship visiting the station each summer for resupply and changeover of personnel, general expeditioner field training was initially undertaken in Victoria at the Anglesea Scout camp. By the early 1970’s the Division was looking for an alpine field training facility and, it transpired, that there was a redundant SEC storage shed at Rocky Valley. The plan then was for the Antarctic Division to upgrade the shed by recladding it and installing a mezzanine floor.

Meanwhile, the training which included pitching the polar pyramid tents, learning to use stoves and other equipment were held in snow near the shed - which was primarily used for storage. Navigation exercises were conducted around the dam and on Heathy Spur. For many expeditioners, this was their first experience of snow. In 1973 the Federal Government decided to base the Antarctic Division in Hobart so, whilst the proposed redevelopment did not go ahead, the shed continued to be used as a training facility until the relocation of the headquarters in 1981. In more recent years, field training has been carried out in Antarctica; however in 1994 the introduction of long range helicopter operations between Australia’s Antarctic stations saw the helicopter crews back at Falls Creek for on snow training. They spent some uncomfortable nights sleeping in snow caves they made in the snow drifts behind the AGL workshop. The connection to Antarctica and ANARE history has long been severed, an item about the shed in the club’s “Aurora” newsletter back around 2013 generated only one response which provided the information included above. • Diana Patterson Diana is well qualified to discuss sea ice and the ANARE Shed as she has led expeditions to Antarctica.
