FRIDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER 2020
So Much to Appreciate!
In these troubling times, the beauty and serenity of the Bogon High Plains and the Upper Kiewa Valley is something we should all appreciate and value! Main Pic by Matt Hull @ www.themattimage.com. Lower pics by Roslyn Ann Photography @ www.roslynannphotography.com.au
FROM THE CEO Bring on 2021
W
ell, as far as seasons go, in fact as far as the year 2020 goes, it can now finally be formally recognised as a ‘shocker’ (note: insert your word/expletive of choice). “Snowless Horribilis” has been confirmed, with only 1947 looking worse (on the data we can find)… however, the current forecast is predicting a last minute insult of a snow front hitting the resort (as you are reading this) only adding insult to injury. Whatever the outcome, Winter 2020 is one to forget. On that note, October 4th marks the end of the 2020 ski season. The thanks I would like to convey on behalf of the Resort Management team is to all our operators, our stakeholders, staff, residents, the ski community and our guests will fail dismally, nor can it fully express our appreciation for the resilience and willingness to give it a go to the very end. The community of Falls Creek came to the fore as it not only carried the burden of bushfire related summer trade evaporating, but it excelled in tackling the tragedy of COVID-19 head on. Challenges of this magnitude plunge quickly into very dark times. Doubt, frustration, anger …they rise up and obliterate every ounce of positivity, evaporate any hint of hope and try to extinguish our resolve. However, the community that is Falls Creek reached out and rallied for those who needed help and support. Add to this, the messages

Bring on 2021. Even Marty McFly (Back to the Future) would skip 2020. In fact, let’s Yes, you can be confident, there will be more of this! Pic – Chris Hocking just erase if from the Calendar altogether, so when time travel is https://www.facebook.com/ possible, we spare the future the trouble! FallsCreekAlpineResort The resort is preparing for the green season as quickly as it can. Work on events and activations is continuing, albeit with plans A, B and C being formulated for every possibility (note: the only infinitesimal positive to come out of COVID… contingency planning!). We have crews working on the MTB trails and the event team planning for COVID normal times, for when we can activate again. Our events calendar will be published shortly. Keep your eyes on www.fallscreek.com.au and our social channels on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. In the words of Faire, from her Landmines EP (note gratuitous plug for our latest social video) “I love the fight… even if I get knocked down, I’ll come back even stronger…..” see it here:
Finally, to the editor of this publication. The most ‘glass half full” asset this region is fortunate enough to have. Ken – you’re a super star. Thank you for your many pearls of wisdom and inspiration through the toughest of seasons. Now, stay safe, celebrate inching back to freedom and bring on 2021. Thanks. • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

sually at this time of year we’d all be rejoicing in the option of Race Club’s Spring Skiing Camp, or the ability to simply free ski and ride with our kids and friends enjoying the last weeks of snow before the lifts get turned off at the end of the season. We would have celebrated the end of formal club programs with our annual end of season presentation night on the last Saturday night of the school term, followed by a few sore heads at the family fun day races and BBQ on Sunday. Some families would have already packed up and headed back to their other homes across the region and interstate, while others stick around to eke out the final runs of the season over the next few weeks.

However, as we all know, 2020 is no usual year. EVERESTING LOCALLY For a Great Cause
E
arlier this year, Mitch Cook decided he wanted to raise money for mental health - he just wasn’t sure how.
He admits that when he made the decision to fundraise for such an important cause, he had no idea of the extent 2020 would challenge the mental health of individuals more than ever before, but with the growing number of people battling with their mental health locally, added to the loss of much loved community members by suicide, he knew he had to ‘go big or go home!’ And so he decided to take on ‘Everesting.’ The concept of ‘Everesting’ is fiendishly simple, yet it is a fiendishly difficult challenge to complete. Pick any climb, anywhere in the world and ride or run repeat after grinding repeat until you have notched up 8,848m vertical height in one activity. Complete the challenge to get your name in the ‘Everesting Hall of Fame.’ For Mitch, it will involve cycling up the Tawonga Gap and back down not once, not twice - but 19 times in total. “It had occurred to me that some sort of physical challenge would be a fitting way to do this on account of the tragic mental challenges people so often endure in day to day life,” Mitch says. “If I was going to do some mammoth event, why not do Everest to give people an incentive to back it and get some good money into a mental health foundation.” The ride will total about 285km, and Mitch estimates he’ll be in the saddle for up to 15 hours to complete the challenge. Having previously finished the Peaks Challenge in just under 10 hours, but at only half the elevation, he has some idea of what the experience will entail. ‘Eversting’ however, will definitely be his toughest ride yet.
BOUTIQUE BREWERY OPEN FOR BUSINESS featuring...
Mitch says he’s been training fairly consistently since he decided on the challenge in March this year, but has really started to knuckle down in the last few months and is putting in some serious kilometres, with his event date pencilled in for the 9th November, weather pending. On the day, he’ll have a support crew keeping an eye on him, making sure he’s got food and drinks refilled at the Gap and bottom of the hill, and following him during the dark hours of the ride in the early morning, and most likely again in the evening. Some of his mates will also join him for a few laps throughout the day. Now for the important part - how you can donate and support this incredible cause. Mitch is raising money through Movember. Blokes make up an average six out of every eight suicides every single day in Australia, with the number of men who die by suicide every year nearly double the national road toll. Movember looks at mental health through a male lens, focusing on prevention, early intervention and health promotion. While he doesn’t have a goal in mind, Mitch mentioned if he raises $5,000, he’ll add two extra laps of the Gap to his tally to total 10,000 metres elevation - but we think such a gruelling effort deserves his fundraising

You can donate online on Mitch’s Movember page at https://movember. com/m/14259797?mc=1. Stay tuned for the ‘after’ story - but we have no doubt Mitch will come out the other side an ‘Everesting’ champion. •
