“It is very confronting. How can a young 58 year old man, fit as any 20 year old, be lying in a wheelchair, convinced he was in New Zealand planning tomorrow’s ski day and clearly with significant impairments.”

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Spring 2020 Edition TWO

A TOUCH OF BIRDLIFE Last week the reality of Steve’s condition begun to set in. The rehab team have confirmed that Steve will need 24/7 care for the rest of his life. Whilst the family hold hope for recovery, they are now planning for the harsh reality that Steve will need much more monetary support than we could ever have imagined. Further from the extensive medical costs that will follow him through his life, he will need modified living arrangements, disability vehicles, ongoing occupational therapy and many more things that our beloved Steve most definitely never budgeted for ever needing. While the government, through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) may cover some basics, we are aiming to give Steve life choices & he really needs our help. “The ski and snowboard community is a close one. We are all bonded by a love of snow, something that Steve Lee has in spades. What he doesn't have in spades are the dollars necessary to help him through the next phase in his recovery,” says ski journalist Rachael Oakes-Ash. “The #steveleefightback fundraising platform has been put together to help him and his team. We know 2020 is tough for everyone but even if you can donate the cost of a coffee or a beer, every bit helps.” Please go to: https://asf.org.au/ communities/snow-australia/steve-leefightback/ where you can make a donation. Then follow, and share #steveleefightback on all social platforms. Read Rachael Oakes-Ash’s (aka Miss Snow It All) remarkable story about Steve Lee here: https://www.snowsbest.com/steve-leestroke-help/. This article prepared by the team at Falls Creek Resort Management and we are sending our strength and support to Steve and his family on his road to recovery. •

In Our Local Area

I

n this column we look at a few species that have been in the neighbourhood. In fact it's been a bumper winter for the small birds that live on nectar, seeds, grubs and insects. Latham's Snipe This is our international visitor and it arrives without quarantine or visa. It's a medium size bird that breeds in Japan and East Asia and migrates annually to eastern Australia where it settles in freshwater marshlands and grasslands. Mount Beauty has four and I've made three sightings on Heathy Spur on the High Plains. They're shy and hard to spot. When you get close unknowingly they shoot off low and fast making it a challenge to get a photo. They use their long bill in a sawing motion to bring worms out of the mud. Australian Reed Warbler This is a small bird with a big call and many of the reed stands in the valley have had some as residents this spring. They're shy but if you observe a stand from across a river or from the end and wait for a while you may get a glimpse. They live off insects and spiders and it's thought that some head north in winter.

Australian Reed Warbler - Pic by Ern Reeders

Australian Wood Duck Mount Beauty has two families. One started with 17 chicks and is now down to 11. The other with 10 now down to 7. They forage on the grass, take to water for safety and nest in tree hollows. The chicks in the town family have been getting an education in road traffic and they are quite happy to bathe and feed just metres from the road. The brood of 17 was either a creche - yes, they do cooperative rearing - or might have been nest parasitism where a mother lays her eggs in another couple's hollow. The male has a plain chocolate brown head with a slight mane at the back of the neck, giving the species its other common name, the Maned Duck. The female has horizontal stripes on her face. • Ern Reeders 20.10.20

Yellow-faced Honeyeater Yellow and black face stripes distinguish this bird that despite the name also eats insects and seeds. They're forest dwellers and as well forage among the large shrubs and trees in Mount Beauty's parks and gardens where they could be seen calling to each other in twos and threes. Some of them migrate northwards each year to avoid winter's cold.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Spring 2020 Edition TWO

NEW PROJECT FOR FALLS CREEK Ultra Fast Broadband

M

any people will know Steve and Benn Sugden from their involvement with Koki Lodge. How many people will be aware that they have another major string to their bow. The business is titled ‘Valve Networks’ and is the service of providing ultra fast broadband over fibre optic cables. The company has done major installations in high rise buildings in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. And now it is the turn of Falls Creek Alpine Resort to take advantage of this fantastic service. The guys started the project last summer – digging trenches and running cable underground through many parts of the village – and the opportunity exists for every business to sign up and receive the very best in high speed communications. Below is a summary of what the team have been up to.

GPON is Gigabit Passive Optical Network. This network is the only one of its kind in a ski resort in the country. We have plans to run Free-to-Air TV over this network and add a number of local information channels. Steve and I view this entire project as a network for the village. We plan to offer free Wi-Fi hotspots at key locations within the village, the first will probably be at the pizza oven/picnic area in the Village Bowl. Construction: The network build involves installation of underground pipes and surface pits. This provides the opportunity for work and local jobs in Falls Creek. Ongoing support and maintenance: The network will have ongoing local support and maintenance also contributing to jobs in Falls Creek. Other notes:

Civil works for this summer are already underway and should be completed by mid-May 2021 with date exclusions for Christmas, Easter, 3 Peaks, etc. The team are actually trenching about 100 metres per day.

Falls Creek Resort Management have been very helpful in moving this project forward. Steve and I are funding it ourselves, so we appreciate FCRM's can-do attitude. Special thanks to Fred Weir and Callum Brown.

Stage 1 (March 2020 to May 2020) of the rollout completed with the following areas included

We would like to thank individuals and businesses that have already signed up for fibre based Internet.

• Arlberg Street; • Schuss Street; • The Village Bowl Circuit.

And as work progresses, it is also appropriate that we thank our team of workers and colleagues who manned the picks and shovels during Stage 1:

Stage 2 (October 2020 to May 2021) of the rollout will include: • Parallel Street; • Christie Street; • Falls Creek Road; • Slalom Street; • Sitzmark Street; • Snowgum Lane; • BHP road up to Woodsmoke and Windy Corner. Depending on expressions of interest our priority routes may change. For example we currently have Feathertop, The Hub, Les Chalets, and Woodsmoke as priorities because of expressed interest. Sitzmark Street and part of Falls Creek Road is complete. We plan to offer free Internet (until the June 1st, 2021) for buildings that sign up before New Year’s Eve 2020.

A major project that has the ability to benefit everyone in the village. Pic – Courtesy Valvenetworks.

Zorren Miller, JJ (Kilimanjaro Apartments), Martin Dean (Nelse Lodge), Jamie Jansen, Peter Mundy, James Wruck (Attunga Lodge), Paddy Dodd, Steve Bond (Feathertop Lodge), and a few of the boys from Frying Pan Inn. Technical details: We are installing 48 core fibre cables as part of a GPON network.

FALL LINES Team Mount Beauty News At the recent Team Mount Beauty Annual General Meeting, an enthusiastic committee was elected. In the report of the AGM, the previous committee were thanked – and now it on to business. If you were not aware, we had many more nominations for the general committee positions than we had places available. This is a great problem to have, but it does mean we have some committed members who missed out and are keen to be more involved. We also have a small army of other keen members who have expressed interest in helping out but don’t have the time to be involved at committee level. As a result, your committee voted unanimously to create four TMB Sub-committees. Our aims: • To harness expertise within the club; • To encourage Member engagement with all facets of our Club’s operations; • To include a wider cross-section of club Members in directing our club’s future; and • To make committee processes more streamlined. The Sub-committees are: Trails; Events; Juniors and Communications/Governance. These Sub-committees will make recommendations for the general committee

to action. Ideally, each sub-committee will comprise at least one TMB committee member and two club members. There will be a maximum of six people on each subcommittee. Project Working Groups: In addition to Sub-committees, we will also have Project Working Groups which will deliver various projects from time to time. We currently have exciting plans for the BMX Pump Track which are continuing to evolve. What we'd like you to do: Please consider putting your hand up and joining us as we take our Club to the next level. If you are interested, you can nominate yourself for a sub-committee or Working Group by emailing: info@tmg.org.au. Keep your eye on the TMB Facebook site, the website or this paper for more positive news. •

Libraries Re-opening Alpine Shire Libraries are very excited to welcome you back through our doors as of last Wednesday, the 21st October. The following restrictions are in place to keep us all COVID-safe: • A maximum of 10 people may be in the library at any time.
