A

stra Lodge, located in the heart of our wonderful resort, has been awarded not just one but three awards by the World Ski Awards and World Luxury Spa Awards announced in Austria over the weekend of 21st and 22nd November. For the fifth consecutive year, Astra was awarded Australia's Best Ski Boutique Hotel 2020, having previously received the honour in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Astra was also named for the second time in the top three of the Best Ski Boutique Hotel in the World category, an impressive recognition that sets it amongst the global ski resorts giants and proves the property is a leader in its field. To top it off Astra Day Spa was awarded Winner for Luxury Ski Resort Spa of 2020 by the World Luxury Spa Awards. The World Ski Awards are in their 8th year, and are highly coveted, honouring only the elite of the ski hospitality industry. The winners were announced in Austria over the weekend by the World Ski Awards. Astra's Co-Proprietor Rosy Seaton, says “the awards represent the gold standard in the ski industry experience, equivalent to the Snow Oscars.” The awards are voted by the

leading ski tourism professionals and ski consumers from around the world. “In such a challenging year, we feel incredibly proud to accept the award on behalf of our dedicated and passionate team that share in our achievements. Together we strive for the same vision and shared commitment, that makes Astra a success, not only in Australia but within the entire International Ski Industry,” said Rosy. Astra's General Manager, Shannon Exelby, added “It is certainly an achievement that we like to hang our hat on. The location is stunning and combined with world class services, Astra offers our guests a beautiful cocoon which motivates guests to become fully immersed in the whole Falls Creek ski experience, just outside our door.” The Annual World Ski Awards is an International initiative to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in ski tourism. Businesses and resorts from Australasia, the Americas and Europe compete across a number of categories, including Best Ski Resort, Best Ski Travel Agent and Best Ski Tour Operator.

FALL LINES Apology There are two Mitch’s in this town. Both are great blokes and do great work. One Mitch, with his wife Sum, runs a great restaurant called Stockpot. That’s Mitch Smith. And if you’re keen on a good business, this quality restaurant may be up for sale.

The other Mitch has also done some great stuff in the community. As well as being a National Youth Science Forum student (sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty) a couple of year’s back, this Mitch also took on a major challenge and succeeded. This is Mitch Cook who took on the challenge of riding up the Tawonga Gap 21 times to ‘Everest’ i.e the equivalent of climbing the 8848 metres to raise in excess of $12,000 for Men’s Health through Movember. This was an excellent effort and was recognised with a great Chris Hocking photo on the front of last edition. Only one ANZAC Day Dawn Service: 5:45am problem – your Ed captioned the photo 6:15am. CHRISTMAS GIVING “Tis Better to Give than Receive!”

I

t has been said before that ‘It is an ill wind that blows nobody any good’ and if there is one thing we have learned this year it is just how important our local friends and neighbours are. Out of the whole Lock-down parts one and two, we have learned (if we didn’t already know) just what a wonderful community we have here. Another thing we have learned is what a great range of talented artisans we have among us. One of these is Chip Bragg who spends a fair amount of his time making leather goods from interesting leathers like Kangaroo, Water Buffalo and Byson. His range of hand-made products includes

plaited belts, plain and decorative belts, instrument shoulder straps, leather braces, leather buttons, key fobs, bracelets, anklets, and dog leads. Chipp displays his products at our local markets and will be there this Saturday – giving you the chance to secure some interesting gifts for Christmas – or you can give him a call on 03 5754 4125. In actual fact, our regular community markets (which support the running of our Uniting Church) is a great place to have a browse and potentially pick up some unique Christmas gifts. In our last paper we mentioned Phil Rumpff’s Calendars featuring a range of local photography – and Phil will be at this market on Saturday 5th.

Templar Market There’ll be an impressive range of locally made gifts on display at the annual Christmas Pop Up Market at Templar Lodge on Sunday, 20th December. From 3:30pm, you can enjoy a delicious drink and bite to eat, while browsing an amazing selection of vintage clothing by Butterbell Thrift, skincare by Alabasta, leather goods by Dela Viktoria and Abide, recycled gold

Locally made leather goods make valuable and personal gifts. Pic – Ken Bell

and silver jewellery by Argent Silversmith, Mountainside by Charlie Brown’s beautiful prints, ceramics and pottery by Little Cottage Creative and Alpine Pottery, polymer clay jewellery by Bella Lou, and chopping boards made from local timber. Now that’s an impressive line-up! Phewbut put the date in your diary and don’t miss this once a year offer. From3:30pm, Sunday 20 December at Templar Lodge.

Unique designs and robust construction, the fire pits are a unique addition to any BBQ or outdoor area. He also creates furniture, Light features and pieces of art. Check him out at Whipps Designs. Alpine Outfitters has a great range of gifts and Christmas lines for the outdoors types, Sassy Road has a shop-full of gifts, jewellery, clothes and home-wares, and our wonderful pharmacy has excellent stocks of exotic perfumes. Also, check out the ‘Against the Grain’ Clothing range with Elissa at Ski Plus. They are now opening for summer and would love to see everyone. Plus they have good stocks of other gear. Also in Tawonga South we have the very well stocked Tawonga South Store, Newsagency, Post Office and Tattslotto outlet. The team have done a fantastic job of putting together a great range of ideal Christmas giftware for all members of the family. Of course, there is also Rocky Valley Bikes and Snowsports. Glenyse and Brian are doing their best to purchase stocks of bikes and gear so that your Christmas can be the best. Call in and check their stock and lay-by now. And when you consider how tough everyone has done it recently and how much we have had to rely on each other, why would anyone ignore the locals and travel to the big smoke? It doesn’t make sense. Let’s keep the Christmas spirit alive in town – please! •

In general, our shops and businesses have a pretty comprehensive range of gifts and Christmas gear whether it be your table decorations from the supermarket, beautiful pampering gifts from Gather and Harvest, home-ware and handyman gear from Mt Beauty Hardware, or Christmas lights or catalogue items from North East Home Improvement Co. Then you can order you tasty Christmas treats form the Bakery. Cakes, puddings, ginger breads and much more. Now is also the time to get to our local butcher and order your Christmas hams, pork, seafood or any of their specialty smoked and rolled products.

Achieving for $250K by Year End! Kiewa Valley House Op Shop opened in May 2014. Since then we have raised $250,672.72. During November 2020 we have raised $10,023.62.

COMMUNITY NEWS towns all over Australia that want one. The first step is to persuade BoM that they need it and I think that they are almost there. The second step will be to find a suitable location on the airport for it. The third step is to get the money for it. This photo is the weather station at Wangaratta airport and it is just an array of sensors including the Stevenson screen on the left that houses the thermometers. A ‘basic’ automatic station (wind speed & direction, pressure, Temp, Dewpoint and Rainfall) includes some very high quality (and high cost) instruments that will cost about $110,000 to purchase and install. The benefit to the community is that having data from a BoM weather station at Mount Beauty will improve the accuracy of local forecasts and that is beneficial for anyone that uses the forecast (i.e. everyone!). A weather station will contribute to the work of emergency services by giving them access to an official source of weather data to assist

their operations. Ambulance aircraft (both fixed wing and helicopters) visit YMBT by day and both ambulance and military helicopters visit YMBT at night using night vision equipment. One of the consequences of many towns wanting weather stations is that BoM will only install a new weather station if we pay for it (assuming that we can first convince them that we have a suitable site). AMA have applied for funding for it under the Bushfire Recovery Grants Program but we will have to also tap into other sources of funds to raise the full amount. This article is really a ‘heads up’ to the community about what it is and why we are pursuing it. For further information, please Email: mail@ymbt.org. au. • John Hillard

WHAT'S ON

FALL LINES UKV Lions Press Release The Lions Club of Upper Kiewa Valley has, over many years, organised and staged many events for the Mount Beauty community. This year has been one in which there has been an enormous amount of disruption to community activities, in all areas. The events our Lions Club host are no exception. We were unable to hold our November Spelling Bee for Kiewa Valley primary schools, and preparations for future events have been thrown into disarray. We will not be able to hold Carols by Candlelight this year. This event, which would have been held on December 11, has had to be cancelled because of uncertainty surrounding the procedures we would need to carry out to keep it safe. The Mount Beauty and District Community Band, which has been playing for us for several years, is not able to participate; and an alternative would be hard to find at this stage.

The Bogong Conquestathon will not be staged next year. It would normally be held on the Labour Day weekend in early March. We are uncertain of the restrictions which may be necessary at the time, particularly in view of the fact that we need permission from Parks Victoria to run the event. In general, we have been having increasing difficulty over the last several years having enough volunteers to efficiently organise the climb. Our Australia Day Breakfast will be held as usual. The Alpine Shire is in full support, and we anticipate being able to manage any extra requirements made necessary by the pandemic. Members of the Club have found these decisions extremely difficult, and we hope that we will be able to be part of community events as conditions move to ‘Covid normal’ next year. •
