VILLAGE AMENITY Reduced Vehicle Traffic

A

s a result of situations in previous summers, during the busy Christmas/January period, Falls Creek village was advised by the CFA and Victoria Police that there were problems with too many vehicles in the village. Therefore, the village will be closed to parking from 5pm Thursday 24th December to 8am Friday 8th January. A half hour period will enable visitors to drive to their accommodation, unload and then remove their vehicle to the car-parking below the village. The irony is that while we have promoted the village for summer trade – and this summer trade is growing – it produces its own set of different circumstances. As a snow resort, the concept of the ski through village is part of the resort’s attractiveness and visitor parking has always been accepted as ‘down along the road!’ The rise in summer trade – and the fact there is no snow on the village roads has meant the visitors, as well as staff and residents could always drive into the village.

But, experience has shown that during the busy times the number of vehicles in the village creates problems. From the simple ‘blocking in of other vehicles’ to the biggest problem - the inability of our major fire-fighting appliance - the tracked vehicle ‘pumper’ – not being able to get to a fire! The ‘Pumper’ (its colloquial name) is a track vehicle designed to be used during snow season as well as during the rest of the year. A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE For All

Little wonder the darkness has not understood it.

T

hese thoughts are based on these bible readings – Psalm 96; Isaiah 9: 2-7; Titus 3: 4-7; John 1: 1-14.

Each year we celebrate anew the birth of Jesus Christ, not because of habit, not to strengthen our relationship with God, but to challenge it.

So often, we try to put rules around our relationships with both God and one another; we seem to have an insecurity about being different, about each of us being individual, each of us having our own path to follow.

The Christmas story is about hope, peace, joy and love, and we need to ask ourselves if that continues to be our focus as we walk and talk the Christian lifestyle.

Therefore, we demand that others live as we do, follow our concept of life and follow our rules and regulations. Unfortunately, that is the story of us using and abusing the story of Christmas.

In Isaiah and John, Jesus is introduced as the Light shining in the darkness, a Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, the Word of action and the Life that brings Light. John goes on to say, “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not Day understoodANZAC it.”

Each of us has our own individual gifts and talents, and each of us has our own path to tread. Knowing and understanding our fears, God gives to each of us his Holy Spirit, providing us with the strength, passion, humility and grace to live and work with love and understanding (Titus ANZAC Day Dawn Service: 5:45am 3: 4-7). 6:15am. revealing that His immense love is for all. There are no more boundaries, no one is excluded. Everyone needs to be loved. God sent Jesus as a gift to the world, which inspired our tradition of sharing gifts with each other. When we accept that we are loved and lovable, we then respect ourselves for who we are, giving us the freedom to do the same for others. We can each be a gift to our communities.

much of that in Australia. Since then ski touring has become popular and so has mountain biking. The latest innovation in mountain biking is E- Bikes. So suddenly the idea of combining ski touring in winter and using the ease of Avanti E mountain bikes to access distant trail heads of Falls Creek become the perfect blend to be able to set up a year round guiding attraction to Falls Creek. Then main aim is provide an opportunity for people not that comfortable with the mountains, those looking for a special occasion, celebrating the office year and those that wish to simply get to distant treks without the extra six km walk out from the Falls Creek Village. Mark ‘Macca’ Mc Donald has lived and worked in Falls Creek since the late 80’s and has assembled a team of local guides to assist in developing a new way to access, enjoy and explore our wonderful environment. There are a variety of tours and levels available, all groups are private group tours with a maximum of six per guide. The trips are all day, starting and finishing in the comfort of Nelse Lodge. The lunches are lovingly prepared by Genevieve and Martin from Nelse.

ummer is a time we love. The kids are on holidays, the visitors have arrived and everything is rolling along nicely. After the lock-down, folk from the metropolitan area are taking advantage of the $200 bonus and heading to the hills – and they’re loving it. A couple last week from Geelong, had their E bikes and they were off exploring the Gravel Trails around Falls. If there is anything good that has come out of this COVID-19 disaster it is the fact that people genuinely seem to be caring for each other more and respecting each other more. The rush is not there, we’ll all get looked after, and we are all in a very good

Well done to all those people – and thankyou for exercising a true spirit of Christmas. The rivers are all good and the Pondage has trout and some ‘reddies.’ When you are sneaking around the water-ways just be aware - there are Joe Blakes in that there bush. Fishing rods, gear and licences are available from Rocky Valley Bikes and Sports in Tawonga South. •

Glider Flights During the Christmas-New Year Holidays With the increased frequency of operation over this period there is ample opportunity to enjoy an aerial view of the Upper Kiewa Valley to the heights of Mount Bogong as well as an opportunity to handle the controls of a glider. Flights range in duration from 10 minutes to an hour and longer if you wish. For those wanting more of the experience there is the opportunity to join the Club which has been operating from the Mount Beauty Airport since 1976. The recently imported dual-drum V8-powered winch has increased launch heights, so enjoy the exhilaration of the winch launch to around

2200 feet above ground in just over a minute as well as the views.

5pm except Christmas Day. Phone: 5755 0596. •

For flight bookings phone 041 859 1351 or visit the airport when gliders are in the air and speak to a club member under the white shelter on the airport fence line. •

SUMMER HOLIDAYS Mountain Biking The fabulous team at Team Mount Beauty have spent many years creating and cultivating ripper tracks in the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park. One feather in their cap is that the club hosted the National Mountain Bike Championships in February 1999, prior to Australia hosting the Olympics in September 2000. One of our respected members got the gig of building the XC Mountain Bike course for the Sydney Olympics. (We do have some credibility). The club are now in the process of producing a snazzy new colour map of the trails and they will be available from Rocky Valley Bikes and The Info Centre for a gold con donation. •

Horse Riding The traditional way of enjoying the Alpine High Country. Kath and Steve Baird have been operating Bogong Horseback Adventures since 1986 and have spent almost as much time on the high plains

as the mountain cattlemen. Supported by competent staff, Kath, Steve and their boys Lin and Clay have taken many of thousands of riders for the experience of a lifetime. Trips offered range from a two hour ride in the Kiewa Valley, a three hour ride including a light lunch and five day packhorse trips into the high country. Phone 5754 4849 •

Tennis Mount Beauty Tennis Club is open all year round for fee paying tennis players. Court Hire is $10 per hour. If there are people waiting, you are asked to keep your play to

an hour at a time. Further details from 0400 350 488. •

Golf The Mount Beauty Golf Club would have to be one of the most interesting golf courses in the area. Some challenges, and some excellent scenery. 18 holes, grass greens, clubs for hire, practice facilities and visitors are welcome. Located at the top of Tawonga Crescent, besides the road to Falls Creek. Ph: 5754 4569. Wb: www.visitmtbeauty.com.au/golf. •

TEAM MOUNT BEAUTY NEWS Great Trail Maintenance

O

ur committee at TMB are excited to welcome Andrew Hall and Mingma Sherpa as our two Mountain Bike Trail Maintenance Officers. Andrew and Mingma will deliver maintenance and trail improvements for the next six months on our trails around the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park on Mt. Beauty. Andrew Hall has called Mount Beauty home since 2018, after owning and managing a coffee roasting company in Buxton. Andrew is a passionate cyclist, enjoying both mountain biking and road cycling. Andrew brings both energy and experience to the role, having designed, built, and maintained mountain bike trails for over 15 years both in Australia and North America. Mingma Sherpa is also a local to Mount Beauty, after moving here in 2018. Mingma has spent 15-years as a high-altitude mountain guide in Nepal. More recently, Mingma has enjoyed volunteering with the local Land Care group, part of which has involved cleaning and restoring trails. Mingma is excited to be maintaining and improving the local MTB trails, to support local tourism. Although employed by the Alpine Shire Council, Team Mount Beauty will be providing scope, standard and priority of the trail works that will be undertaken by these staff. The Team Mount Beauty Trails Sub-committee, primarily Glenn McIlroy and Peter Hull, will be working closely with the Trail Maintenance Officers. This program is a fantastic opportunity for

NEW PROJECT FOR FALLS CREEK period) for buildings that sign up before New Year’s Eve 2020. Technical details: We are installing 48 core fibre cables as part of a GPON network. GPON is Gigabit Passive Optical Network. This network is the only one of its kind in a ski resort in the country. We have plans to run Free-to-Air TV over this network and add a number of local information channels. Steve and I view this entire project as a network for the village. We plan to offer free Wi-Fi hotspots at key locations within the village, the first will probably be at the pizza oven/picnic area in the Village Bowl. Construction: The network build involves installation of underground pipes and surface pits. This provides the opportunity for work and local jobs in Falls Creek. Ongoing support and maintenance: The

network will have ongoing local support and maintenance also contributing to jobs in Falls Creek. Other notes: Falls Creek Resort Management have been very helpful in moving this project forward. Steve and I are funding it ourselves, so we appreciate FCRM's can-do attitude. Special thanks to Fred Weir and Callum Brown. We would like to thank individuals and businesses that have already signed up for fibre based Internet. And as work progresses, it is also appropriate that we thank our team of workers and colleagues who manned the picks and shovels during Stage 1, they have done a great job.
