THE ORIGINAL MOUNTAIN ULTRA

Bogong to Hotham

I

n 1984 the first edition of the Bogong to Hotham, aka The Rooftop Run saw a handful of runners take on what was ultimately an unmanaged trail for many sections, from the camp ground at Mountain Creek to the Summit of Mount Hotham some 64km in distance including elevation gains of 3500metres. Fast forward 35 years (to 2019) and thanks to the team at Parks Victoria, runners are presented with what, by comparison, could be considered a well-manicured trail - cleared of undergrowth and fallen trees from the winter season. Whilst the challenge ahead remains at the extreme level to complete the course successfully - and in the required time, it certainly is made more achievable due to the work done by Parks Victoria to make the trails safer and more accessible.

normally be enjoyed by up to 100 runners. COVID-19 has played hell with a big stick and while the event is still planned to go UKVRA ahead, runners are havingpresents… trouble accessing Victoria. BRING ON 2021 With Fitness and Health

optimum health, wellness, and self-care long after January ends.

s we welcome a New Year, we’re often motivated to make a list of ideas, expectations or activities we hope to achieve, and create changes in our lives for the better. It’s encouraging to set new goals; however, reality is out of 365 days, every day is a chance to reflect on what we want to achieve, and it all comes down to what we choose to do, how we to do it, how long we commit to it, and most importantly, how it makes us feel. This can relate to strength, fitness, health, self-care, DIY projects, work-life balance, relationship goals - absolutely anything.

1. Are your goals realistic? Many start with a significant goal, but haven’t broken it into smaller, attainable goals to determine what is required. Setting large goals without doing this sets us up for disappointment when we don’t achieve it, and breaks momentum. By achieving and celebrating smaller goals, we are one step closer to the larger goal we have set.

A

Heading into 2021, for those who are currently motivated and emotionally charged to make decisions for future us, here are a few suggestions to help follow through with your goals, while also creating a life that brings positivity, happiness,

STINGRAY ~ Open Daily ~ 8am – 2pm Brekky • Coffee Snacks • Drinks Dine In or Take-Away

2. Creating a plan of action. Would you spontaneously get in the car and decide to visit a location that you don’t know how to get to, and not look at your GPS or a map? You’d take wrong turns and are unlikely to arrive at your desired destination, and instead end up frustrated and exhausted because your efforts did not yield the expected outcome. Planning steps and actions that lead towards your goal will help you move forward. Want to get stronger or fitter? Research the options in your area to help support you with this, whether it’s attending a gym, joining a group fitness class, finding a Personal Trainer, or starting home workouts. Whatever your goal, make an actionable plan. 3. Motivation vs discipline - what is the difference? Motivation comes in bursts,

when we feel a sudden increase in energy and eagerness to do something. We get up, get moving, and feel great for doing it. However, have you ever had days where you just can’t be bothered, even though you know you need to work towards a goal? Discipline is the ability to do what is necessary when it is hardest to do so. Sometimes we have the ability, but not necessarily the desire, to do what we need to. It takes practice and time to develop positive habits, created by actions and repetition. As humans, we need something important that comes from the inside, based on what matters to you, and inspires you, to keep the motivation, drive and commitment going, even on the days where it feels like a struggle. 4. Utilise positive support from those that encourage you. These people become your

BRING ON 2021 tribe. They can be in the form of a gym family, personal trainers, close friends, training buddies, family, work-mates – those who understand your goal and can be honest, supportive and encouraging. 5. Tracking your goal. While we wait for the long-term rewards of our efforts to surface and become evident, being able to track immediate feedback to see we are on the right path is encouraging. It allows us to make necessary changes, while celebrating the smaller wins. What we can track, we can change. 6. Enjoy it! Trust the process, embrace challenges, take pride in your efforts, and believe you have the ability to achieve what you put your focus, dedication and commitment towards. Celebrate the small milestones and be proud of the ongoing changes you continue to make – not just in the first month of the year, and not just towards your goals that you set for yourself, but every single day that you wake up and decide to do your best. A SPECIAL PLACE Mittagundi’s 43rd

was always curious as to why there were a couple of Melbourne Metropolitan Tramways Board GMC diesel buses parked in a paddock near the Hinnomunjie Bridge in the Omeo Valley. The answer I received was “Peregrine use them for their rafting trips down the Mitta” Well actually they used them for accommodation at the end of their trips. Further investigation over a period brought

the correct answer to light. A bloke called Ian Stapleton purchased 17 or 18 of these buses (all without motors) and towed them, with his short wheel based Landrover, from Melbourne out along the Princes Highway to Bairnsdale, up the Great Alpine Road to Omeo and then along the Omeo highway to a newly purchased plot of land near the Big River Bridge to a spot called Mittagundi where they were used as accommodation for young teenagers as they built the Mittagundi Outdoor Education Centre. As more permanent buildings were erected, the buses were sold off to varying parties and shipped to many places around Gippsland and put to a range of uses. This was the start of Mittagundi about 43 years ago. As an outdoor education centre, Mittagundi usually takes in around 500 students per year for that fabulous outdoor experience. The ten day program sees students take on a two day hike across the high plains from Watchbed Creek to Mittagundi where they spend the week learning a range of outdoor skills before hiking back to the bus and heading home. Each year, for the last 25 or so, the team at Mittagundi have hosted a Pioneer Skills come Bush Festival weekend as their major fund-raiser and this year it takes place on Saturday 16th January – next weekend. FALL LINES Christmas Cheer

D

on’t you just love it when a community member or two, get together and just start and do something. And so it was with Marie Lucas-Gear in Tawonga. As Christmas was approaching, she decided to brighten up Tawonga with Christmas Wreaths as an alternative to Christmas lights. The local Tawonga and District Community Association had been encouraging local residents to put up a wreath or some form of decoration outside their home – and many answered the call. Marie, with daughter Claire, granddaughter Grace and local lady Sue Ryder (with extra ideas) turned Marie’s lounge room into an ‘Elves Workshop’ over a period of five weeks and created a range of bright Christmas Wreaths which are now

placed around town. The TDCA have encouraged local. Everything on the wreaths was made using recycled materials such as bicycle wheels, bicycle tyres, fencing wire, fire hose and oasis florist bases. The big thanks to Glenyse and Brian Peacock at Rocky Valley Bikes; the Men's Shed; Barb and Sue at Kiewa Valley House Op Shop who very generously donated much of the materials. These Christmas wreaths made up a fantastic display all through Tawonga from the entry signs on the north side, to the entry signs on the southern side and everywhere in between.

It was envisaged that it would be a pleasant activity for the community to walk around to look at the wreaths. Then Melissa Wiffen suggested the SPOTTO activity where you picked up your ‘Mud Map’ at the Old Tawonga Store and wandered around, ticking off the different wreaths as you visited them. Well done Marie and co for a great Christmas effort. •

WHAT'S ON

FALL LINES Cycling in the Area Falls Creek, the Alpine National Park and the area surrounding is proving to be a really great area for cycling of all sorts. Falls Creek has an abundance of mountain biking trails and gravel riding trails all with a well-deserved and respected reputation. But this little item is about road cycling. On any given day, especially weekends, there are quite a few road cyclists heading up and down the Falls Creek road, the Tawonga Gap and the road to Hotham. On a recent Saturday there were in excess of 100 cyclists riding the Falls Creek Road in that morning period 8am to around 10am. Many people are training for future events like the Alpine Classic in January or Bicycle Network’s Peaks Challenge in March. Or some folk just cycle up these hills as part of the Ride High Country Seven Peaks Challenge (https://www.ridehighcountry. com.au/7-peaks/) which is a fantastic achievement. In fact, your editor has met a chap from the Macedon Ranges Cycle Club who is in his mid 70’s and has done the Seven Peaks four times. There are even people who Bike Camp the program. Riding to the start, camping, doing the peaks climb, camping and then riding on to the next venue – a great way to enjoy this part of the state. But, there are two elements that cannot be stressed enough. Lights! Lights front and rear.

As a motorist, the first thing you see is a light. As a motorist, it is not hard to get a splash of sunlight across your windscreen which reduces visibility for a second. Also, a rider in shadow is so much harder to pick up – to be seen. As the cyclist descends, and is constantly in and out of shadow – a light – front and rear – makes all the difference from a safety point of view. And the new LED lights are fantastic! Do it. Second point. Descending out of control. We have already had a couple of road cyclists ‘eat it’ because they were going too hard and could not get around a given corner – with one an emergency airlift to Melbourne – pretty bloody seriously hurt. ARMCO Safety Railing doesn’t bend – but does a lot of damage to the human body! Enjoy the riding but keep safe. •
