OUR SUMMER OF CYCLING Just Beginning
F
alls Creek Alpine Resort hosted the first round of the Victorian Gravity Enduro Series and the first Enduro World Series Qualifier globally of 2021 over the weekend of Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th February. With a sold-out field of 250 riders competing across six stages it was an eagerly anticipated return to racing for the Victorian MTB calendar. Leading into the event the weather looked grim with a huge storm cycle rolling through the peaks of the High Plains the day before practice. With over 80mm of rain being delivered organisers were understandably nervous! Despite receiving record amounts of rainfall the trails held up remarkably well with all racers getting out on track to practice a rapidly changing course by Saturday morning and the Blue Dirt Shuttle service in full swing. Talk amongst the riders was the introduction of a new village Urban stage taking place on Saturday evening. This new stage saw racers heading from the Summit of the resort to the heart of the village via stairs, jumps and a pretty scary looking rock garden! At the close of Saturday, the Elite field saw Connor Fearon establish his dominance over local rider Ben McIlroy in the men’s competition with Rachel Hore also putting a solid lead into local Georgina von Marburg. Sunday saw the resort wake to sunnier skies and rapidly drying trails. With the tracks being in completely different shape to practice, new lines and rocks were appearing throughout the day. This rewarded the most experienced bike handlers that could keep it steady and react to the changeable

conditions. Ben McIlroy’s opening salvo took two seconds into Connors lead on Fall’s most hectic trail, Big Fella. However, Connor continued to extend his advantage throughout the day showing his physical strength on some of the more demanding stages. In the women’s race Rachel Hore’s lead was unassailable as she took a win on every stage except one. The battle between 3rd and 2nd heated up though with Georgina von Marburg and Lia Ladbrook changing places throughout the day. Eventually Georgina’s experience won through and Lia had to settle for 3rd. Falls Creek Event Supervisor Nick Buckley said “Despite the best efforts of Mother Nature the Falls Creek round of the Vic Enduro Tour went off seamlessly. The course and operations team at the Resort put in a huge effort to keep the trails running smoothly all weekend even with the significant rainfall we experienced. All the racers were clearly excited to get back racing again and thanks to the incredible efforts of our on-mountain stakeholders we could put on a real show for them with our new urban stage bringing riders right through the village.” Nick continued that the summer at Falls Creek is only just starting “The Enduro tour is just the first of many MTB events we have planned for the late summer here at Falls Creek. We’ve our XC triple header weekend approaching on Fri 26th – Sun 28th. This not only features the Victorian State XC Championships but also includes the regional MTB schools race suitable for all ages AND our new long distance XC race on Sunday which takes in all the best trails the resort has to offer.”

FALL LINES Cricket Experience This item should have gone in a few weeks back. For that we apologise – but sometimes things just don’t go to plan (a bit like the latest lock-down). Back in January, Mount Beauty Power played ladder leaders Yackandandah at home. It was a 1 v's 2 game. Mount Beauty made 7-184 from our 40 overs. They then bowled Yack out for 164 in 35.5 overs. Craig Henderson’s bowling figures were 1/31 from 7.5 overs, taking the last wicket for the day. Toby Derrick’s bowling figures were 1/33 from 7 overs. And to show what a great and versatile game cricket is, Craig is 60 years of age and Toby is 12 years of age. Well done team! • Visit the

A Clean Chimney It is always nice to sit by a warm fire during Winter. However, people often forget to keep them well maintained. When smoke starts to come back into the room, this is an indication that the chimney/flue may be blocked and will need to be swept by a professional chimney sweep. These blockages may be due to a large build-up of creosote (black soot) or from other obstructions like a

working smoke alarm in your house. Never put clothes close to wood fires. Never use petrol, oil or kerosene to help light the fire. Make it a habit to look outside and check your chimney/flue for smoke. Refer to Advert on Page 2 for further help. •
For better, safe burning, follow these tips: Burn only dry, well-seasoned hardwood. Use kindling wood and paper to get started. Leave air controls open for at least 15-20 minutes to start the fire burning and when re-loading. Build your fire using smaller logs, and then build on this with larger logs. If you have children, a fireplace guard is always a good precaution. Always ensure you have a

Below Bogong This book, Below Bogong – A history of Mount Beauty is the second book complied by Diane Edmondson. Her first being Tawonga Remembers, the history of Tawonga was launched at the Tawonga Hall in 2016. The success and interest in this book was overwhelming and it was obvious that people purchasing the book were interested in the local history of the area.
The beauty and joy of gliding over the Bogong High Plains. Pic – Courtesy the Mount Beauty Gliding Club.
It was at this point that she decided to compile another book, this time on the history of the township of Mount Beauty. Below Bogong- A history of Mount Beauty is made up of 412 pages and is divided into 13 chapters. It begins with an overview of the area and covers the early construction of the Kiewa hydroelectricity scheme, its people, and early settlement of Tawonga South, Lower Bogong, Bogong and Mount Beauty. It also describes life in the town during the
40s, 50s and 60s. The last part of the book is filled with miscellaneous events, accounts, places of interest, stories and memories supplied by individuals. So you can see it is a comprehensive history which covers decades of development, progress and the sociology of the area. The launch and sales of the book will take place at West Peak Hotel, Mount Beauty on Saturday 13th March at 2.30. All enquires to Diane Edmondson: Mb: 0428 297 373. •

BECOME A DOCTOR When I was young I decided I wanted to be a doctor, so I took the entrance exam to go to Medical School. One of the questions asked was to rearrange the letters “PNEIS" into the name of an important human body part which is most useful when erect. Those who answered spine are doctors today. The rest of us are sending jokes by email!!!
MISSING BOOK A copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Environment, Land Use and Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was left for this community in the care of Mr Bill Sutton. Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory. Maintaining proper tyre pressure is important for many reasons other than reducing the potential of a flat tyre or a blowout. In order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency manoeuvres, tyre pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level. Even a tyre that doesn't appear to be low on air can result in reduced vehicle handling and excessive tread wear.
