OUR RUNNING FESTIVAL Grows Even Better
S
ponsored by the Mount Beauty and District Community Bank, the Mount Beauty Marathon has grown and evolved over the last 40 or so years to the point where it is now known as the Mount Beauty Community Bank Running Festival. This, the 40th staging of the Running Festival will be held at the Les Peart Oval, next to the swimming pool, on Saturday 15 May. The Running Festival, originally called the Marathon then Half Marathon, was first run by a group of committed local runners in 1980. The event is now run by the Kangaroo Hoppet (with the help of many locals and community groups) and will be the only running event held in the local area this year. The event will include the normal 3km, 10km and 21km courses. Entrants in the 3km do a lap of the lake with participants divided between competitively running and walking at a more social pace. The 10km course goes out to Damms Road and enjoys some gently undulating terrain. The 21km continues from Damms Road up to a turnaround on Mountain Creek Road and enjoys wonderful views of Mt Bogong and the beautiful Kiewa Valley. This year the event includes a new trail run that has been designed by long-time local runner Bob Flower. Incorporating the iconic Survey Track the new 14km course has two river crossings (only shallow water!) and some great hilly terrain for the

adventure minded. Trail running is a great way to stay active and be engaged with the great environment that surrounds us in the Kiewa Valley. The event is generously supported by the Mount Beauty and District Community Bank and without their support the event would struggle to survive. Ben Derrick, from the organising committee, said that organising events is becoming increasingly expensive and administratively burdensome and the support from local community organisations is critical to the long-term success of the event. As with previous events there will be a lot of support from the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, the Mount Beauty Men’s Shed and St Johns Ambulance.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2021 Edition SIXTEEN
ICE PLUNGE Yep Winter’s Here! As the first day of Winter approaches, and Falls Creek Alpine Resort looks forward to the start of a much needed snow season, one critical piece of the preparations is underway, the Falls Creek Ice Plunge! Taking place on Tuesday June 1st this annual ritual sees locals and visitors alike take a dip into the frigid waters of the Rocky Valley Lake. This traditional custom is always performed on the first day of Winter as an offering to the snow gods to secure a bountiful winter season. It’s a rite of passage for all locals and is generally considered mandatory for all new resort arrivals to participate! Fancy dress is not only permitted but strongly encouraged, and spectators will be treated to a varied range of taste’s, styles and suitability of outfits. With plungers generally expecting Wintery conditions, it’s a common sight to see a dusting of snow on the foreshore of the lake to make the experience truly authentic. Not many Alpine resorts can boast a waterfront that matches the stunning crystalline foreshore of Rocky Valley Lake, and this location is not only a valuable resource for snowmaking at Victoria’s largest resort but it also acts as a fantastic pool for this very refreshing dip. Falls Creek Marketing Officer Lucy McEwan said: “With the gates of the resort ready to open to guests again this snow season, Falls Creek is thrilled to mark the start of Winter with the return of the Ice Plunge. For the un-initiated a bracing dip into the waters of the Rocky Valley Lake first thing in the morning is a rite of passage and a great way to kick start the season! Sadly, in 2020 the event was cancelled so we are raring to go again for 2021, and provide our annual offering to the snow gods. I for one cannot wait to get in and do my part ensuring my head is fully submerged as tradition dictates! ”
Ice Plunge 2018 -William Hamilton, Jaclyn Hamilton and Georgina Rice do the dress up take the plunge regularly. Pic - Erin Davis-Hartwig
To encourage participation plungers will be enticed into the water chasing over 30 rubber ducks. With a heap of incredible prizes up for grabs all kindly donated by on-mountain and Mount Beauty businesses, plungers can get hold of meal vouchers, cash vouchers and even an entire resort entry. Not only that but all proceeds from the $10 entry fee will go to support the incredible work of Fight MND in battling Motor Neuron Disease. Fight MND Co-founder and Patron Neale Daniher and the wider Daniher clan will launch the seventh version of the famous blue beanie at the Big Freeze 7 at the MCG on Monday 14th June (the Monday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend). Registration for the Ice Plunge is available on Monday 31st May in the Falls Creek Visitor Information Centre or on the morning of the event from 10am at the Rocky Valley Lake Foreshore. Hot drinks,
warming fire pits and a barbecue breakfast cooked by the SES will be available post event so please make sure to bring cash and warm up! Let’s all get together and welcome in what is looking to be a fabulous winter! •

ast week, Tawonga Primary school got busy making Mother's Day gifts out of old coffee cups and succulents. The Mount Beauty Uniting Church Op shop were kind enough to donate all the required coffee cups, allowing the students to see the benefit of a strong community and seeing sustainable up-cycling and reusing in action. A big thank you goes out to the wonderful Op Shop staff from all the students and families who enjoyed giving and receiving such beautiful gifts. The Tawonga Primary school students are also still busy collecting bread tags for wheelchairs. To date we have collected 1.58kg of bread tags - that's a lot of bread tags! So, another big thank you to all the local businesses that are hosting our bread tag collection points: Mount Beauty Bakery, FoodWorks, Birds Nest Salon, Tawonga Butchery, Tawonga South Newsagency, The Park Mount Beauty, Falls Creek Coaches, Old Tawonga Store, and Dederang Store. We here at the school plan to continue collecting for the remainder of the year, so please feel free to drop your bread tags at any of the above businesses or drop directly
to our school front office entrance. The
bread tags will be sent to a lady in Robe, South Australia, who sells the bread tags to a local artist. The artist creates bowls, plates, and other useful items from melting down the bread tags, which are then sold. The money received from selling the bread tags to the artist goes to purchasing wheelchairs for people in South Africa. We need 200kg of bread tags to purchase one wheelchair. For more information, please visit the Aussie bread tags for wheelchairs website: https://ozbreadtagsforwheelchairs.org.au. The website also contains a link to a 7:30 Report clip that is well worth watching. Thanks again to the Op shop, local businesses, families, and people helping unite our school and broader community through joint initiatives. The students really value feeling what they do in school extends beyond the classroom. What a wonderful community we live in. •

Success at Nail Can Tawonga Primary School students shone last Sunday, 2nd of May, at the Albury Nail Can Hill Run. A school team made up of Darcy Fallon, Eddy Franzke, Bethany Franzke, Charlotte Ryder, Poppy Scherf and Will Ryder competed in the School Can 4 km race and took out first place in the school competition. The day was hot and the running track steep, rocky, and busy. However, this ‘super-star’ running team took to the track at full pace. Tawonga Primary School staff and families were so proud to see the student's efforts pay off. The local team members also did well at the recent school cross country event and now look forward to entering the upcoming local Mount Beauty Running Festival this Saturday 15th May. As a result of this fantastic effort by our students, the school has won $500 and the Schools Perpetual Trophy which will be proudly displayed at our school. Here's to more smiling faces and good times at our next local running event. •

SCOOT, SKATE OR RIDE For Regional Crown On Saturday 29th May local skaters, BMXers and scooter-riders will have the opportunity to compete for a regional place as part of the Australian Skate Park League series held at Myrtleford Skate Park as a part of the North East Skate Park Series. Held in partnership with YMCA Action Sports, Skate Australia, Victorian Skateboarding League, BMX Victoria, 45° Youth and Alpine Shire Council, locals and out of towners are expected to take part in the event. The scooter, BMX and skateboard competitions are a part of a structured and interconnected Australian Skate Park League series held across the country. YMCA Action Sports Specialist Lily Smith said the competition at Myrtleford was a chance for young locals to showcase their talent. “There are some amazing up and coming skaters, scooter-riders and BMXers. These competitions give them the spotlight they deserve.”
As well as showcasing talent the league also creates opportunities for young people to gain experiential practical training in skate park event management. The Myrtleford round has been brought to life through a partnership between Alpine Shire Council, 45° Youth, YMCA Victoria, Victorian Skateboarding Association (VSA), BMX Victoria (BMXV) and Skate Australia. Other major sponsors of the VIC League include Element, Goliath, Skater Maps, Scooter Hut, Root Industries and Rampfest. Details of Competition: Date: Saturday 29th May. Time: 11am – 4pm. Location: Myrtleford Skate Park, 135 Standish St, Myrtleford. For media enquiries and photos please contact: Matt Brett, Operations Director, YMCA Action Sports. Em: matthew.brett@ ymca.org.au. • Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick. • Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades. • Check the condition of your tyres – or even consider getting winter tyres- more grip in slippery conditions. • Make sure your tire pressure is exactly what it should be. • Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly! • Check the amount of coolant/anti-freeze in your radiator. Our Service Centres have a Glycometer which will measure how cold your radiator fluid can get before freezing. • Carry a few emergency supplies, like a blanket, warm gloves, ice scraper, shovel – in case you get stuck out on the road.

She also said that this program, as well as skateboarding being added to the Tokyo Olympic Games, was changing the face of traditional skateboarding. “The series presents a great opportunity for young skateboarders to harness their skill and progress through a structured national pathway,” she said. There are more than 100 Skate Park League events a year, making up the Australian Skate Park League, which is the biggest and most established grass roots skateboard, scoot and BMX series in Australia. The VIC competitions makes up one part of YMCA’s national pathway program which are held in skate parks across QLD, SA, TAS, NT, WA and NSW.

WHAT'S ON IN 2021
DEAR DOROTHY Husband Tech Support
D
ear Tech Support, Last year I upgraded from ‘Boyfriend’ to ‘Husband’ and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the ‘flower and jewellery’ applications, which operated flawlessly under ‘Boyfriend.’ In addition, ‘Husband’ uninstalled many other valuable programmes, such as ‘Romance & Personal Attention’ and then installed undesirable programs such as ‘Cricket, Football, Golfing and Continuous TV.’ ‘Conversation’ no longer runs, and ‘Housecleaning’ simply crashes the system. I've tried running ‘Nagging’ to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? Signed; Desperate
Dear Desperate, First keep in mind, ‘Boyfriend’ is an ‘Entertainment Package,’ while ‘Husband’ is an ‘Operating System.’ Please enter the command: 'http: I Thought You Loved Me.html' and try to download ‘Tears.’ Don't forget to install the ‘Guilt’ update. If that application works as designed, ‘Husband’ should then automatically run the applications ‘Jewellery and Flowers,’ but remember - over-use of the above application can cause ‘Husband’ to default to ‘Grumpy Silence, Garden Shed or Beer.’ ‘Beer’ is a very bad program that will download the ‘Snoring Loudly’ Beta. Whatever you do, DO NOT install ‘Mother-in-Law’ (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt to re-install the ‘Boyfriend’ program. These are unsupported applications and will crash ‘Husband.’ In summary, ‘Husband’ is a great system, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. It also tends to work better running one task at a time. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend ‘Food’ and ‘Hot Lingerie.’ Good Luck, Tech Support. •
