CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Mohair or Wax

N refresh.

ot much happening xc wise at Falls Creek this week, new snow on Monday has given the trails a nice

With no skiing to report I thought I would let you know about the latest tech in cross country ski equipment. Most top ski brands now offer a “mohair” waxless ski option. Instead of struggling with grip wax in Australia’s notoriously difficult waxing conditions or using underperforming fish scales, mohair has found its way back onto the bases of high performing xc skis. Similar to the ‘skins’ used in in back country skiing and those used for centuries in Scandinavia, new generation mohair can provide great grip and glide in our variable snow.

summit ridge

Those readers who are old enough will remember when mohair had a short and unsuccessful career as a waxless option, it would ice up, be slow and wore out quickly so was soon discontinued. A couple of years ago with new technology, mohair was reintroduced, this time with much greater success. The Norwegian ski company Madshus also uses an ‘on the fly’ movable ski binding which expands the performance range of mohair. In the attached photo you will see the mohair on the base, but the binding has a large red MOVE button that moves the binding forward and back without removing the ski. This allows adjustability to either increase grip for steep uphills or when the snow is slippery or move the binding back for more speed on downhills or when skiing on grippier snow. I have been on this ski all season and been really enjoying it performance. It has the same solid, instant engagement kick as a waxed ski, is fairly fast and only has minimal noise when going downhill. It will never be as good a well waxed ski, but for the 75% of the time when waxing is a challenge or when you are short on time and just want

to get out on the snow these are a fantastic option. The only caveat is to make sure the ski is the proper flex for your weight and skiing style. Falls Creek Cross Country at Windy Corner has several mohair skis available for demo, so when we reopen why not drop by to check them out or just drop in to say G’day and get a waxing recommendation. •

HOPPET NEWS • Thanks to the small team of local Birkies on the race committee who are prepared to get a race up and going for those still able to attend. Unfortunately it was not to be and Victorian Covid lockdown was implemented from 1pm on Saturday afternoon, the day before.

called The Sentinel… ‘Twas the night before Hoppet and all over the house… everyone was still up eating and drinking and watching TV because there was no need to get up early - to race up the hill and get a good parking spot at Windy Corner for the Hoppet.

• Thanks also to the 33 entrants we had up until Friday night for your support!!

But… all is not lost!

• Thanks to Meg Crebbin who came up with a fantastic poster this year. • Thanks to Geoff Sorenson for the planning to get the course prepared for the day. • Also thanks to Michal Trnka of Alpine Timing for all his work on the entry side of things, generating certificates and also for getting information to participants and also for fielding lots of enquires and the occasional criticism. • Also many thanks to Snow, Trek and Travel who were once again prepared to sponsor the event, even though last year and this year have not been great for snow related businesses. Maybe we can finally get something going in 2022!! • Ann Bellingham, Race Secretary Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club

‘Twas the night before Hoppet…

T

o borrow from the poem by Clement Clarke Moore that was first published in 1823 in a New York newspaper

Falls Creek

Way back in February the organisers decided to again offer a virtual Hoppet so that overseas skiers could keep up their involvement with the event despite being locked out of the country. Now, with the rest of us either locked down or locked out, the Virtual Hoppet has become the event of last recourse. The rules are pretty simple... go online to www. hoppet.com.au and hand over your $10 and commit to carrying out some form of physical activity over a 42, 21 or 7km route of your choice. Not only will you have your participation recorded for posterity in the online Hoppet results list, but you will also receive a beautiful buff style neckwarmer/ balaclava/beanie/facemask in the mail. Online entries for the virtual Hoppet do not close until midnight Sunday so there is still time to enter. If you cannot manage the distance in your allotted exercise time, it is acceptable to spread your activity across a day or two or whatever. But please remember to upload your results by the end of next week. Entries have been received from 26 countries and all Australian states and mainland territories. The oldest is Jiri Baros from Valascke Mezinci in the Czech Republic

FALL LINES We recognise that, and we have heard the community. The feedback was clear, there needs to be a life and soul in Bogong Village throughout the transition period whilst we continue our discussions with potential new operators. AGL is currently working hard on some near-term and long-terms options to address these very valid concerns. It won’t be in a commercial capacity - we have always maintained that as an energy company, we’re not in the holiday accommodation business – but we hope this goes some way to reintroduce some vibrancy in the village and potentially help relieve the rental market stresses that are having an impact on our community.

Hydro Community Fund and Community Dialogue Group We’re excited to announce that this year’s AGL Hydro Community Fund will be opening on 1 September, closing on 30 September. Last year, we supported the Mount Beauty Swimming Hole Project, the Mount Beauty Men’s Shed, and a signage project for Pebble Beach, amongst many other COVID Safe sponsorships. We’re also still on the hunt for more members of our Community Dialogue

Group. After some exceptional applicants, we are extending the Expression Of Interest period so that we can gather even more momentum. Our first meeting will be held in early October. If you’re interested, or if you know someone who may be, feel free to get in touch. The more people we have involved, the better outcomes we can achieve for the community. To find out more information, head to agl. com.au/hydro or email AGLCommunity@ agl.com.au As long-term backers of the Kangaroo Hoppet, we echo the disappointment in it not being able to go ahead again this year. The resolve of everyone involved is admirable, and a special thanks to Allan Marsland and Ben Derrick for quickly pivoting to host a virtual Hoppet this year. AGL is proud to continue backing the Hoppet through our sponsorship funding this year, even though it is a little different to how it has been traditionally hosted. In 2020 my virtual Hoppet was out on the mountain bike and I am planning do the same for 2021, maybe I’ll see you out there! •

Vaccinations

M

ount Beauty Pharmacy is proud to be joining the Australian Government's Covid-19 Vaccination Program. As qualified Pharmacist Immunisers, both Phil and Peta have been delivering seasonal Influenza Vaccinations to their customers for a number of years. To be able to offer the AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine to all eligible people we are confident that we will be able to quickly achieve high vaccination rates for our local area and wider communities. Vaccination is our best defence against Covid-19, and the more people we can vaccinate the more protected the vulnerable people in our community will be We are encouraged to see such a great response in our first weeks of delivering this much needed service, and anyone wishing to book an appointment can head to: www. mountbeautypharmacy.com.au and register for their vaccination. •
