MOUNT BOGONG CONQUESTATHON One Week To Go
T
hat’s right folks, just one week before the 44th Mount Bogong Conquestathon is here. If you are one of the 1231 people who have ‘liked’ the FB posts or mentioned you are entering this iconic event, but are yet to do so – well now is the time. As of writing this article we sit at 160 entries and would love to see the final number at or above 250. https:// hoppet.com.au/running/conquestathon Everyone has their reasons to not enter until the last week, so let me try to convince a few more of you to enter now. • Likely this is the cheapest single day event on the planet at just $30 for U18, $40 for an adult and $100 for a family. If the event is cancelled due to the weather or fire danger, you will receive a FULL refund.
• The course and distance of 21km is fully signed and marshalled the entire way. The committee has purchased high visibility signs in which will be placed at every intersection. Marshals wearing their BSAR (Bush Search and Rescue) clothing will be out there all day and this year we bring back the fruit and Gatorade stations at Camp Creek and Mountain Creek Campground. • Enter prior to Wednesday the 28th of February to go into the spot prize draw of over $6000 worth of great prizes – all donated through local businesses and our major sponsor – AGL. • Another newbie for this year is the team’s category. The biggest team entered wins a two-night accommodation package in the new AAA building at Howman’s Gap Alpine Discovery Camp. Second to this, the team with the three fastest times combined will win a substantial drink and food voucher to a well-loved local restaurant. So, for those who have committed already

FALLS FREEDOM
or are going to prior to 10pm on Friday 1st March, I give you some tips for completing the event while enjoying your time out there – whether it be for two hours or 10. You want to enjoy the day, you want to have a chat with friends and you want to capture the views and ever-changing scenery along the way. Try to keep your rest breaks you have to a maximum of a couple minutes along the track and at intersections. Be rewarded by your efforts at the summit, take photos, use the specially made Conquestathon ‘summit photo frame’, have some food and drink and then head toward Camp Creek. Continuous movement at a paced speed is key to make the cut-off times and when you do stop, take note of how long it’s going to be for and to stick to it. Nutrition. Whether you are in the event in the ‘race’ category or ‘social/ walker’ category, what you carry in terms of hydration – both liquids and solids is SUPER important. Those who regularly participate in these sorts of events will know their own hydration plan and what foods their bodies accept. If this is your first event, these simple rules will help: Both Electrolyte and Carbohydrate replacement is essential every hour. Electrolyte is best and easily replaced through liquids. Try to consume 1-part electrolyte drink or mix to 1-part water. Straight electrolyte drinks for hours on end will lead to bloating and stomach cramping. Carbohydrate is hard to replace in liquid form other than sports nutrition brand gels and tablets.

MOUNT BOGONG CONQUESTATHON Carrying a few gels is recommended but also carrying ‘normalised’ foods too. Carry muesli bars or energy bars, carry a trail mix of dry fruits and nuts/ seeds and chocolate. Pack a nutritious and substantial lunch for your earned break at the summit. Remember that reaching the summit is 8km in and so you still have two thirds of the course to go and with this – require enough food and drink to get you home. Untreated water can be found at Bivouac hut, Michell hut and at the stream between Michell hut and Camp Creek. Treated Gatorade mix will be located at Camp Creek and Mountain Creek along with donated fruit supplied by Vegetation. We hope to see out there on Saturday 2nd March. On behalf of the awesome Kangaroo Hoppet sub-committee – have a great day. https://hoppet.com.au/running/ conquestathon. •

VICTORIAN ENDURO TOUR Mount Beauty Round Two
T
eam Mount Beauty will host Round Two of the Victorian Enduro Tour at Big Hill Mountain Bike Park on the 2nd and 3rd of March. Enduro racing sees the rider race timed descents on up to five different race stages in the park. The race this year is divided into five timed gravity stages, each featuring Big Hill’s diverse terrain and offering technical descents, rocky sections, and challenging features. Riders will aim to complete these stages as quickly as possible, with the cumulative time across all stages determining the overall winner. Between the timed stages, riders will traverse non-timed liaison stages. These sections involve navigating less challenging terrain, including flat sections, climbs, or easier descents. Unlike the timed stages, the focus during liaisons is on conserving energy to get the most out of the racing stages. When pedalling the larger enduro bikes, multiple liaisons to the top of the hill make it a big day in the saddle.
Overall, Enduro Mountain Bike racing offers a captivating and spectator-friendly format, attracting riders with different strengths and riding styles. It provides a dynamic and engaging experience for participants, making it a popular and exciting form of competitive mountain biking. The event will be held over two days. On Saturday 2nd March The Vic Enduro next weekend will provide great spectator opportunities. riders will practise on Pic – Matt Rousu the five race stages and Sunday 3rd March is race day! FEASTIVAL SUCCESS Three Days of Music, Arts, Comedy & Food
T
he mountains came alive last weekend with FEASTIVAL Falls Creek! From music to arts, comedy, and mouth-watering food, it was three days packed with fun for everyone. The Saturday afternoon’s Feast de Resistance featured a huge line-up of music acts including headliners Ball Park Music, who got the call-up just 24 hours before they were set to take the stage. After the devastating cancellation of The Temper Trap, event organisers were quickly able to replace the iconic group with Ball Park Music, who jumped on the next flight from Brisbane and saved the day. Alongside them, a line-up of Aussie talents like The Grogans, Thelma Plum, Holy Holy, Vaudeville Smash, The Maes, Savage Honey and more kept over 1600 attendees grooving all day long. But it wasn’t all about the music, a total of 10 individual events took place as part of the FEASTivities including pilates, yoga, art exhibitions and workshops, foodie tastings, of course the sold-out Comedy Night had guests roaring with laughter at the Frying Pan Inn on Friday night thanks to hilarious acts like Geraldine Hickey, Tuck Shop Ladies, Jordan Barr, Concetta Caristo, and Ben Kochan.

25 people enjoyed the guided walk around the village on Saturday morning, starting with, tea, coffee and scones at Ory’s, then a leisurely stroll to the Bowl, and explanations of the history of the high plains and of the village and its development over the years, finishing up at the Falls Creek Museum for prosecco and cheese and bikkies - all supporting our museum and the Falls Creek Historical Society.
The music was great – the crowds stayed right through.

It has been loaned out – and not returned. This is a vital piece of the history of this area and it would be fabulous to have it returned. AUSTRALIAN GRAND TRAVERSE Challenging Fun
T
he Bogong High Plains are a mecca for outdoorsy type people. If you appreciate fresh clean air, fabulous scenery and miles and miles without people, then the Bogong High Plains are for you. Earlier this summer a lady came into the Visitor Centre with an enquiry. I asked where she had been. “I was going to do the mountain bike event, but I wasn’t happy with my bike so I went for a run.” “Where” was my question. “Watchbed Creek, Spion Kopje, Grey Hills, Mt Arthur, Quartz Ridge, Bogong Summit, Cleve Cole Hut, down T Spur, across Big River, up Duane Spur past Roper’s Hut, round past Mt Nelse back to Watchbed Creek” That’s the sort of thing people do – and it is amazing.
Climbing up Ruined Castle with the picturesque Rocky Valley Dam behind means you are well on your way to Pole 333 and Hotham. Enjoy! Pic – Courtesy Peak Adventure.
This weekend sees over 100 entrants taking on the challenge of walking, running or jogging from Falls Creek to Mt Hotham – but by a slightly different route to the Alpine Walking Track. Starting from Slalom Plaza, up over the top, down around Ruined Castle, then over to Pretty Valley, down to Dibbins Hut then back up a different route to come out at The General at Hotham. A grand opportunity to explore the alpine high country and some huts, develop your teamwork and feel elated at the end of it all.
Come and join us for our 4th Annual Australian Grand Traverse on February 24th, 2024. The Grand Traverse will take you from Falls Creek to Mount Hotham in the Heart of the Alpine High Country in North East Victoria. You will not only have an amazing time, you will get to enjoy some of the most picturesque scenery the High Country has to offer. So get yourself a team and head to https://www.peakadventure. com.au/agt to register. Once you have done that, you can keep up to date at https:// facebook.com/events/s/the-australiangrand-traverse-/837364191257717/ See you there!!!! •
