IT’S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG…

From The Chief Operating Officer

Well, if we needed any further evidence of the correlation between the snow season’s first serious dumpage and the spider crabs in Port Philip Bay… look no further than last weekend. 50plus centimetres of the fresh Aussie pow.

What am I talking about? Well, the inimitable Barry Iddles (previously of Elk fame but now putting 360Q on the map) and I were discussing numerous topics over one of his prized By Farr Pinot Noirs one evening, and that a friend of his from RedBoats.com.au (look them up), had noticed a strong correlation between when the spider crabs of Port Philip Bay disappear, post their annual moult, and the sudden and serious snow beginning to fall across Victoria.

So, when I received Spider Crab Watch Update #16 on the 18th of July, from Dr. Elodie Camprasse at Deakin University, advising that the crabs had exited the bay… I knew it was on! Seriously. Ever since Barry let me in on this secret, I’ve religiously followed the crabs. And, so far, their track record has been impeccable. Who needs Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog from the Bill Murray classic - Groundhog Day), we’ve got crabs.

I usually prefer my crabs with a little white wine, garlic, a good dipping sauce or served as the softshell variety in a burger, but not anymore… these little blighters, in their 10s of thousands migrate into Port Philip Bay, scurry around, do what crabs do, avoid being eaten, moult, then whoosh Ka… they leave, just as

A fascinating phenomenon – the moulting of literally squillions of Spider Crabs is a good indicator of good snow falls. This pic of Spider Crabs at Blairgowrie by Peter Fuller.

quickly as they appeared. Then it pukes up here!

There is an entire network of spotters who report sightings to Dr Camprasse, and camera installations across the bay and two dedicated websites, Zooniverse and INaturalist who record these. Have a look here. Spider Crab Watch — Zooniverse

I was sceptical at first, just as I reckon you might be now, BUT… by all accounts, the science suggests it has something to do with the water temperatures in the Bay, the cycle of the moon and the general breeding season for the crabs. So much so that when I discussed this with Dr Camprasse, she had no idea about the correlation. She does NOW!

In any case, the mountain is fully operational. The whole teams of mountain crew did an amazing job dealing with this amount of snow, activating the resort and opening it up as quickly as they could. The brief wind hold aside last weekend, saw the tail end of the cold front move through and cumulative falls in excess of 50cms were laid out across the resort. We are just short of the 1m mark and back ahead of the average snow accumulation for this time of year.

In fact, if I look at the 10-year snow depth chart, masterfully managed by Falls Creek Ski Patrol, we are tracking ahead of the Blizzard of Oz season in 2017 and on par with Snowmageddon in 2018… both displayed very similar weather characteristics to the cycle we are presently in and we punched through HUGE accumulation numbers and average snow depth for the season. So, with any luck, we’re in for a ripper.

Best of luck to all the interschools competitors and the XC skiers at the various championships being held across the resort this week. Conditions are mint.

All that talk of crabs has no doubt made you a little hungry…so:

Foodie Tip of the Week

Lakeside Lodgelakesidefallscreek.com.au/food-drinks/

Talk about good food and great views… Lakeside ticks the boxes.(Insiders Tip – get in early (before 7pm) on a Thursday and they’ll throw in the fireworks for free). Lakeside is popular with locals for all of the above, plus the amazing fireplace (and cocktails), but the food speaks for itself. Deep Fried Camembert, Jalapeno Risotto Poppers and Nacho’s to start are just a few of the choices. Then, a parmie, fettucine, beef curry and sausages with mash are stalwarts. Dessert – you had me at Affogato (with liqueur of your choice) a winner. Grab the wine list too.

Prices are super reasonable and some absolute gems, very well selected from around the region, with several varietals that are knock outs in quality and value for money. Well played! (bonus points for no crab!).

Rightyho… with so much terrain available and snow everywhere, get out there and get some. •

RACE CLUB NEWS

Successful Holiday Program

The Winter Sports Program began with amazing weather and conditions for the first week of school holidays. Approximately 190 kids participated in either a holiday program or a seasonal program. 26 incredible coaches were dedicated to providing them with the best time and also challenging them to improve.

This season our youngest skiers were all aged five and they were coached by one of our most experienced coaches. It was a highlight for me to see them start their journey as mountain and snowsports lovers.

Equally gratifying is the fact that nine of the twenty six coaches came from our own programs in the past. I can’t help wonder how many of the five year olds will end up as Coaches in 2040!

The first week’s good weather allowed all kids to find their feet and the fresh snow on Ruined Castle on the first Tuesday gave everyone a boost.

The BLT closed the first week out and well done to the crew who gave their best on jumps, rails and boxes. The Freeride team showed great camaraderie and skill. Thanks to coaches for guiding their chargers in this event.

The second week saw some inclement weather but this only brought the best out in the kids. The culmination of the holiday period was the traditional Rossignol Cup. The weather didn’t disappoint! It was Character building stuff but at the end of the day it’s an outside sport and we have no control of this. Despite the weather, we

managed two excellent runs on a very good surface. Thanks Groomers!

Fast skiing was the name of day and exceptional resilience and courage saw kids new to racing and veterans throw themselves down the mountain. Well done to the coaching team for leading by example on the day. A very well organised and resilient crew.

Finally, I wanted to pass on my thanks to all athletes who participated over the holiday period. Importantly, my thanks goes to the professional and inspirational and team of Coaches who were true snowsports educators. I know that all kids had fun and improved! •

PROVIDING A SERVICE

We All Have Feelings

The customer is the foundation of any successful business. Without satisfied customers, a business will not thrive let alone break even. This is why customer service and customer support are such important aspects of any business. The ‘customer is always right’ philosophy suggests that businesses should prioritise customer satisfaction above all else and do everything in their power to ensure that their customers are happy.

However, this philosophy faces regular criticism and controversy. Some argue that it places too much power in the hands of the consumer and can lead to businesses sacrificing their own principles and values in the pursuit of sales and customer satisfaction. In my opinion, it’s important for businesses to strike a balance between prioritising sales & customer satisfaction and standing firm on their own values and principles.

The ‘customer is always right’ philosophy also doesn’t take into account the often tactless, frequently rude and sometimes downright nasty things the customers say to staff because they either don’t care about the feelings of the person they are talking at, or because their self-esteem is so poor that they get their kicks from belittling the person who is providing the service for them, to make themselves feel superior.

As a business owner with experience in hospitality & retail, I’d been taught that the customer is always right. While this may seem like a simple and straightforward approach to customer service, it’s not always as straightforward in practice (Michael Podolsky, Forbes Business Council 25.01.23).

Nobody is in the right 100% of the time. Rudeness, disrespectfulness and meanness by customers towards people doing their jobs is such a cliché, but it happens often. I’d go so far as to say it happens daily. Business owners and staff often must grit their teeth and smile in the face of rudeness until it tips over the edge into abuse before they take a stand and advise the person that abusive behaviour isn’t acceptable. It’s so depressing that as a society we’ve gotten so acclimatised to negative behaviours that we only call it out and ask it to stop once it tips over into abuse. It’s even more depressing that people feel entitled to behave badly because they are going to spend money in your business. That they feel it is their right, that because they pay for something, they can say what they want, when they want. Yes, businesses need to make sales. However, no one should have to put up with negative behaviour so they can turn a profit (or break even if it’s a bad season).

In my decades in my past profession as a HR Manager, I’ve written and implemented many Codes of Conduct and positive behaviour guidelines for workplaces, including retailers. The concepts behind these are really simple: be kind, be polite and be considerate. If you’re about to say something or behave in a way that may be interpreted as unkind, inconsiderate or rude then stop. Take a breath or ten. Step away and gather your thoughts while taking those ten breaths. Think about how you

will be perceived by your audience. Look in a figurative mirror and ask yourself if you’d be embarrassed to witness your partner/ mate/parent/sibling behaving this way. Once upon a time we used to say, ‘if you don’t want to see it on the front page of The Age, don’t do it’. Nowadays, we’d say, ‘if you don’t want to go viral on socials, don’t do it’. So next time you feel the need to make what you believe is a clever comment to a business owner or a staff member about themselves, the place they work or the environment they work in, please stop and think first. Your comment may seem hilarious to you and the posse of mates you’re performing for, but most likely it isn’t. It just makes you seem like a twit. Enjoy this wonderful fresh snow and have a great week. •

A 700km Alpine Adventure

Save the Children Australia ambassador

Huw Kingston is launching his new film, ‘Alpine Odyssey’, which documents his nearly two-month journey across the Australian Alps, in part to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on Australia’s snowy terrain and its communities.

‘Alpine Odyssey’ is directed by Australian filmmaker Ivan Hexter and tells the story of Huw’s 2022 winter skiing expedition along the 700km length of the Australian Alps, an expedition he had first undertaken 27 years earlier.

During the 50-day journey, Huw raised $65,000 for Library For All’s Our Yarning project, a free digital library of culturally relevant books created by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and enabled by Save the Children Australia.

Ambassador Huw Kingston said: "Alpine Odyssey was a journey across country I have loved for decades. It was a journey to celebrate the mountains and communities that make up this very special, very small part of Australia. But with love also comes concern and care for the future of this tiny portion of Australia.”

“The journey also offered a great opportunity to continue my fundraising activities for Save the Children, and the Our Yarning project certainly inspired both me and the many generous donors."

Alpine Odyssey will be screened in Falls Creek on 22nd August at the Frying Pan Inn. Ticket sales will also raise funds for Save the Children Australia and Protect Our Winters (POW).

“We are excited to see his alpine expedition on the big screen and witness his challenging journey through some of the most beautiful parts of Australia.

We know that the environment and the communities in the region are facing threats from the climate crisis, and Huw is committed to raising awareness of this while raising vital funds for charity.” •

Save the Children Australia CEO Mat

Tinkler said Huw’s work to raise awareness of climate change impacts and fundraising for programs that support children, was a testament to his dedication.

“We are incredibly thankful to Huw Kingston for his tireless support of the work that we do to improve the lives of children in Australia and globally, over many years,” said Mr Tinkler.

THE BUTCHERY MAKEOVER…

That's Raising the Steaks

After patiently waiting for the worst kept secret in the Kiewa Valley to happen, the day has finally arrived - our new and improved Tawonga South Butchery has now relaunched in a new location and under a new name - Farm to Fork Butchery, Smokehouse and Deli.

Upon getting an exclusive look at the new shop on Monday night, (with a glass of bubbles) we think we're safe in awarding the title for 'Most Impressive Butchery in North East Victoria' to Will and the crew. This place is incredible!

Not only will you find the finest quality meats, with the majority sourced locally, but an entire pantry of goods to delight your tastebuds and make your typical meat and three veg a whole lot more interesting. Think seasonings, meat rubs, sauces, meal bases, oils and dressings, but that's only the start.

You'll also discover Billy Button and Cofield wines, Sixpence coffee, Otway pasta and T2 teas - and that's before you even get to the fridge, where the team's range of cheeses, prepackaged meats, ready to cook pizzas and fresh pastas has exploded! If you're looking for BBQ tools, serving boards and recipe books, you'll also find them amongst all the amazing goods on offer.

Another great touch we love is the addition of all your go-to veg courtesy of Vegitationthink potatoes, onions, carrots and broccoli - meaning when you drop in to pick up a steak or schnitty, you can easily pop the sides you need in your basket and you're all sorted for dinner in the one place.

So why the big move, you may be asking? It's never an easy decision to move locations

- especially one with so much history. First opened many moons ago by Lester Corbett as LC's Quality Meats, it then changed hands to Gavin Thurkettle, becoming Tawonga South Butchery. Gav ran the business for 14 years, before passing the baton over three years ago to Will and Monika Hood.

Will said the butchery has continued to go from strength to strength, and they got to the point where they simply outgrew the shop.

"Over the past few years, we've put a lot of effort into building relationships with local restaurants and cafes, and grown our number of trade customers from Falls Creek, through to Bright and Mount Hotham.

"That means we have a pretty big crew in the back of the shop constantly prepping and packing orders, and it was getting a little too personal with so many people trying to work in such a small space," Will laughed.

"We'd been on the look-out for a bigger shop for a while, and when the opportunity to take over the former Gather and Harvest space came up, we jumped at the chance. It's about twice the size of our previous shop, meaning we can expand our offering and really focus on that 'pantry' style business we've dreamed of.

“As big foodies ourselves, we know how important it is to be able to source all the amazing products to enjoy alongside the quality meat we pride ourselves on having on offer."

It's safe to say it hasn't been a small feat moving an entire shop from one place to the other - especially when it involved installing cool rooms and display fridges that all required new plumbing and electricity, as well as all the measures required to turn a retail store into a food premises.

"It's been a mammoth effort by our team, as well as some additional helpers along the way,” Will said.

"I'd just like to thank everyone who's made the move possible - especially Liam and Kylie, our nephew and niece who work full time alongside us in the business.

"Last, but certainly not least, my wife Moni, who is constantly there making the impossible possible, all while singlehandedly running her own business."

You'll find Farm to Fork Butchery now located at 18A Hollonds Street, Mount Beauty, open from 7am until 5.30pm Monday to Friday, and 7am until 12pm Saturdays.

Make sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram too, with more exciting announcements to come in the not too distant

Local Legends

Bruce Wharrie is a familiar face on the XC trails here at Falls Creek - you will recognise him as the man regularly skiing with the soft toy Camel. More specifically, her name is ‘Alice the Camel.’ She tours on Bruce’s backpack for every ski session. Alice has been near and far with her travels. We spoke with Bruce about the origin of Alice the Camel and got some worldly advice from one of the more well-travelled skiers around. Keep an eye out and say G-day to Bruce and Alice if you’re out on the ski trails.

K: For those who don't know, where are you from and how did you get into XC Skiing?

B: Born Melbourne and lived there for 30 years working as a Cartographer for the Board of Works (now Melbourne Water). Started skiing at 25 years of age after three winter hikes up Mount Bogong during July and August and met some ‘ski tourers’ at Cleve Cole Hut on the mountain.

K: For many who may have seen you out and about skiing, or from your marvellous skiing & weather condition updates you post on Facebook, tell us about Alice the Camel. How did she come about?

B: My life partner Marg Hayes found Alice just south of Alice Springs while she cycled unsupported to Darwin from Falls Creek Resort on a fund raiser for Multiple Sclerosis during 2013. I was still working in Jindabyne at the time. Alice was missing one eye and in poor shape when found but was attached to the front of the bike and came to Mount Beauty for care and attention.

K: You have been skiing all around the world, do you have a favourite location to ski outside of Falls Creek?

B: Firstly, there is skiing the north rim of the Grand Canyon, USA where we worked as XC ski instructors, tour guides and ski trail groomers for three winters on 100km of XC Trails. Then the XC trails in eastern Czech Republic new Liberec, and nearby Jakuszyce XC Trails in Poland. Of course, there are the XC Trails at Dobbiaco using a rail trail with tunnels to Cortina d' Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites. And then the unforgettable XC ski trails in the Engadine Valley, Switzerland. But closer to home, the ski touring across the Main Range in Kosciuszko National Park has many fond and dear memories for overnight ski touring in springtime.

K: Do you have any advice for those wanting to travel the globe skiing?

B: Plan more than one year ahead. If heading for the Worldloppet series in Northern Hemisphere, the accommodation is sometimes very tight and expensive. Airlines

are starting to charge for ski bags. Pack some cold gear in hand luggage as ski bags and large packs do go missing. Spend at least a week on snow before racing a long distance in the northern hemisphere after not skiing for two or three months.

Coming up!

Now that the big snow fall has happened, we can get under way with some serious racing. This weekend on Saturday the 27th & 28th of July is the Australian Open FIS Classic Sprint & Skate 15km Championships. The first FIS Continental cup races of the season are getting started. These race weekends are fun for spectators and youngsters who would like to see the national team and other elite racers compete against each other for National Champion. Good luck to all athletes competing!

Reminder!

On Saturday the 10th of August is the annual Ski de Femme. This one is for the ladies! Well known around town for a fun event for women of all ages to get together to have a free xc skiing lesson, (either skate or classic) and the opportunity to take part in a fun race (with some of the best spot prizes). Finish off the morning with some freshly baked goods and a cuppa. Come join us, bring a friend, from first time on snow through to a seasoned skier - all are welcome! While it is a free event, registering in advanced is recommended and appreciated, please visit the website to register: www.birkebeiner.org. au/eventsracesracing/ski-de-femme. •

New Toys, More Fun

The Mount Beauty Toy Library committee were very excited to get together, unbox and label new toys thanks to a recent community grant from AGL Hydro. AGL has supported the toy library to purchase beautiful Montessori inspired play kits from Lovevery which are usually only available with a subscription. Instead, members can borrow the kits specifically designed for each stage of development and then return them and borrow something new. This is good news for families with the current cost of living. It’s also good news for the environment and it’s great news for little kids, of course! Play kits are so far available for ages 5-6 months up to two years. A new climbing frame and slide, and new soft climbing shapes were also part of the recent purchases.

Mount Beauty Toy Library is welcoming new members and encouraging new and old members to “Join in July and August” to go in the draw to win a $100 voucher for Tawonga South Newsagency and Post Office, who happen to stock a great range of quality toys and books for kids! Interested members can come along to Playgroup at Lakeview Children’s Centre on Tuesdays 9:30am -11am or email mtbeautytoylibrary@gmail.com.

And the good news doesn’t stop there. Mount Beauty Toy Library has also been

Eligible residents and ratepayers are urged to check they are enrolled to vote for the upcoming local council elections by 4pm Wednesday 7th August.

Electoral Commissioner, Sven Bluemmel, has issued a call ahead of the enrolment deadline: “If you’re 18 or over and you live in or pay rates to a Victorian council, enrol and have your say on the future of your local council.”

Australian citizens who have recently turned 18 or changed address can enrol or update their details online at vec.vic.gov.au/ enrolment

Anyone on the state electoral roll is automatically enrolled for their current address for these elections. There are also additional council enrolment categories for non-resident owners, occupiers, company nominees and non-Australian citizens who pay rates.

The rules for council enrolment have changed. Property owners who don’t live in the council area but may be eligible to vote because they pay rates should contact their local council for further information.

The 2024 Victorian local council elections will be the state’s largest single election program, with a predicted 4.7 million voters participating in 465 individual elections across 78 councils.

Moira Shire Council is under administration and will not have a general election this October.

Further information on enrolment is available by calling 131 832 or at vec.vic. gov.au, where voters can also sign up to the free VoterAlert service to receive important election reminders by SMS and email. •

Charity Auction

Here is an opportunity to do your little bit for our community. Come along to Powder Keg next Wednesday afternoon/evening from 4pm to 6:30pm to take part in a Silent Auction to support the Falls Creek Primary School.

For context, last year the event raised over $5K for the Primary School and the committee were able to put funds towards purchasing new laptops for students to use in class. This year we are raising money to install 3 x flagpoles to proudly fly flags at the school.

Heaps of great donated prizes on offer. Just be there, grab a refreshment and peruse the goods for auction and put in your bid. Can’t be too hard – and will support our fabulous school. •

CHARITY AUCTION
FALLS CREEK PRIMARY

LOCAL HISTORY

Tom MitchellSki Champion & Visionary

In the annals of the history of Falls Creek, there is one man who is often overlooked. He did not set up the first ski tows or lifts; he did not operate a commercial lodge; nor was he a ski instructor. Nevertheless Tom Mitchell played a significant role in the development of the village and is deserving of recognition for the role he played, if not as a ‘founding father’ but as a guiding ‘godfather.’

The Mitchell family were among the early settlers in the Upper Murray area and it was at the family property Towong Hill that Thomas Walter Mitchell was born in 1906. Tom Mitchell first learned to ski on a family holiday at Klosters in Switzerland when he was seven years old. It was fourteen years later while studying law at Cambridge University that he developed his passion for skiing. In the 1930’s he was four time Australian champion in slalom, twice in downhill events and four times combined champion. On a number of occasions he captained the Australian team in inter-dominion competitions with New Zealand. He made a strong impression when he won the 1932 NZ national championships on Mt Ruapehu, “his high standard of skiing an inspiration to the local skiers, demonstrating techniques not previously seen on the mountain.” In 1937 Tom published

Ski Heil, the first Australian handbook on skiing technique. The same year he was instrumental in establishing the Australian National Ski Federation. Tom Mitchell married in 1935 and taught his wife Elyne to ski. She, too, became a champion - winning the Canadian downhill championships in 1938. However it was as an author that she

is most remembered, especially for her ‘Silver Brumby’ series for children set in the Snowy Mountains.

At the outbreak of World War II Mitchell joined the AIF. After the fall of Singapore he became a prisoner of war; one of the founding members of the ‘Changi Ski Club’. Interest in skiing had not diminished during the war years; in fact membership of the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) had grown from 459 members in 1940 to 1,000 by 1945. Of this number 200 were serving in the armed forces.

The November 1945 edition of the SCV’s magazine, Schuss, included an article about the Changi A.I.F. Ski Club of which “Capt T.W Mitchell, with his usual enthusiasm for all skiing affairs, was president.” At a meeting of the club on 5th February, 1943, the subject was about “increasing and improving accommodation and conditions in the snow areas of Australia.” Mitchell led the discussion proposing the development of alpine villages, suggesting that ski clubs should adopt one particular resort and spend their energy in developing that particular resort.”

After the war Mitchell returned to the family property near Corryong, becoming a member of the Victorian Parliament in 1947. His passion for skiing had not waned, nor had his vision for the development of alpine villages. In her memoirs, Skippy St Elmo writes about Mitchell’s visits to Falls Creek and the discussions held about the potential for the area to develop as a ski resort. By this time the members of two ski clubs, Bogong Ski Club and the newly formed small Skyline Club, had become enthusiastic about ski racing and joined the North Eastern District Skiing Association (N.E.D.S.A). In 1948 Mitchell organised a bus trip for the other member ski clubs (from Albury, Bright, Myrtleford,

Wangaratta and Beechworth, Tallangatta and Benalla) to visit Falls Creek. Shortly thereafter Albury applied to build a club lodge followed by Myrtleford.

During his time as a politician (1947 to 1976), and as Victorian Attorney General (1950-52) Mitchell was able to have a direct influence on the development of Falls Creek. Indeed, he was instrumental in the easing of barriers placed by the SEC powers-that-be on accessing the ski fields, be it on receiving permits to build lodges or permits to use the road. By 1951 the village as had been envisioned by Mitchell as a POW was taking shape. He too had committed to building a small Dawn Ski Club lodge with Dale Crookes.

Mitchell continued to encourage and support the trans-Tasman ski competitions and in the early 1950’s visits by local clubs became more commonplace. In 1953 a team from New Zealand visited Falls Creek for the first time. This was some months after Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest.

Aware of this, Tom Mitchell and Toni St Elmo had proposed that an unnamed mountain to the north of Mt Nelse be named Mt Hillary to honour the event. (Although the naming was apparently gazetted it has been lost over time in reproduction of maps of the area).

‘Ski Heil! Tom Mitchell, ski champion and champion of skiing!’ •
