IT’S NOT JUST LUCK…
From The Chief Operating Officer
I’m biased but Falls Creek is without question, the premier all seasons alpine resort in Australia, in fact I’d be so bold as to declare so for the southern hemisphere.
Our winter wonderland and summer mountain adventure experiences continue to just keep getting better.
Managing the resort to ensure Falls Creek remains uniquely placed and very well positioned to embrace the changing “experiences” being sought by the modern tourist and resort users, as well as the environmental, planning and policy initiatives that come with the territory of being a Crown land manager, is an ever-evolving landscape.
But, being blessed with natural features and access to resources is just one of the secrets to the resort success.
RESORT ENTRY PERMITS
Falls Creek, in the context of slope aspect and positioning has a topography that faces South (for the majority of runs), hence has a natural advantage regards snow retention and run longevity. Furthermore, with precipitation levels generally more than the

other resorts, under the right conditions, Falls Creek captures and retains more natural snow fall on slope and recycles the associated run off from the melt better than any current Australian resort. The latter is done via an aqueduct network which multi-tasks as XC trails in winter, running/walking tracks as well as MTB networks in summer (and the occasional trout fishing spot too!).
By design, the resort is a definition of sustainability and responsible management of scarce resources, via “recycling” or multitasking – that other resorts want to be. The Rocky Valley Lake and the association with AGL regards supplemental use of the water resource for snow making purposes (and summer water sports) is the envy of every resort in the country (given the current

lengths other resorts are going to, to secure water storage/snow making facilities). This season has laid testament to the value this resource provides. Kudos to the outstanding snowmaking and grooming teams of Falls Creek Ski Lifts… the product is extraordinary and under challenging circumstances is exceptional, again quite possibly the best on offer in Australia at the moment. Well done team.
Furthermore, the Lake is a key strategic point of difference when evaluating where and why any investment or funding in the Victorian alpine should be undertaken or prioritised.
Falls Creek can clearly demonstrate the ability to provide a sustainable and unmatched longterm offering, with access to and responsible use of scare resourcing for its winter product offering. Furthermore, the unique alpine village provides a sense of place, community and a built environ that synchronises with the natural surrounds unlike any of our local peers and is activated across all seasons.
To further cement our position as the best alpine resort in Australia (again reiterating I’m biased!), we are also the gateway to the Bogong High Plains and the Alpine National Park. The splendour, natural beauty and uniqueness the Plains offer for those seeking a true “nature based” experience is unparalleled.
It’s not just the natural beauty, the village vibe or the amazing terrain, but the resort embraces “facilitated” experiences. At Falls Creek we’ve incorporated this in so many aspects across all seasons… we’ve lessons for everything…ski lessons, alpine touring, backcountry tours (a must do), XC lessons, snowmo guided tours (a sensational experience for the whole family), magic carpet and toboggan snow play area… then in summer, we hold road and MTB ride days, festivals, glamping experiences, high tea’s, guided walks, artist workshops, yoga

retreats, sailing, trout fishing etc… and with the continued improvements in the Lakeside precinct, a whole new destination is evolving.
Without the commitment and support of our business operators, stakeholders and residents, none of this would be possible. For many of us, Falls Creek is not just a tourist destination. It’s our home. Like anyone, we take immense pride in welcoming you to and sharing our home with you and look forward to having you come back and visit us, well into the future.
So, in summary, Falls Creek IS ALREADY the place to be in the Alps, but we aren’t resting on any laurels and will continue to strive towards being the ultimate Alpine resort in Australia. •
Speaking of experience, après and eating out… just another of the major competitive advantages we have… so:

The restaurant is opened to public for lunch and is extremely popular on weekends, requiring bookings to secure a table, either inside or out on the balcony. VINTAGE VS RETRO
What’s the difference?
What is the difference between vintage and retro? The two terms are often bandied about by people thinking that they mean the same thing. But they don’t.
People often get confused when talking about vintage and retro items. Basically, vintage denotes something that is authentic from an era at least twenty years ago, while retro is new items that have been made to imitate items of the past (definition thanks to Urban America).
I was endlessly amused by a 2022 article published by Apartment Therapy that mockingly gave the following definitions:
Antique. Something that is, like, really old. Probably musty, dusty, and mouldy. Probably made of wood. Usually unstylish.
Vintage. Something that is too old to be considered “used” but not as old as Grandma. By calling it “vintage,” the seller tries to distract
the buyer from the item’s blatant imperfections. Like many “retro” items, “vintage” items are often either mid-century modern (in style if not in fact) or related to bygone pop culture, junk food or fashion trends.
Retro. Something that is basically outdated and out of style. By calling it “retro,” the seller hopes to assign sentimental or historical value to something that is simply no longer cool. Or the “retro” item may actually be quite new but is “preloved” (read: pretty beat up).
The Collins Dictionary gives less snarky, and less entertaining, definitions:
Antique: An antique is an old object such as a piece of china or furniture which is valuable because of its beauty or rarity.
Vintage: Vintage wine is good quality wine that has been stored for several years in order to improve its quality. EG: If you can buy only one case at auction, it should be vintage port. Vintage cars or aeroplanes are old but are admired because they are considered to be the best of their kind. EG: The museum will have a permanent exhibition of 60 vintage cars.
The word retro—as in “retrograde” or “retroactive”—means backward in Latin.
The Collins Dictionary defines retro as: clothes, music, and objects are based on the styles of the past. EG... clothes shops where original versions of today's retro looks can be found.
Many people can often tell an antique object when they see one. But can you tell the difference?
I decide to open Australia’s first vintage snow suit hire to help us all to embrace circular fashion and do my bit for environmental sustainability. That statement is 100% true, but also because I wanted to keep all 300 outfits… so by renting them out the suits get to earn their keep and I get to share my collection!
So, if you are interested in dipping your toe into the vintage fashion pool, visit the www. idreamofsnow.com Store on Level 1, St Falls Resort West and rent a vintage snow outfit. You can also let me know which boot was the vintage boot. Have a great week and see you in store! •

Welcome to the 31st Hoppet
On behalf of the Organising Committee it is a great pleasure to welcome all participants and supporters to Falls Creek for the 2024 Kangaroo Hoppet. As I write this in the evening of 10 August to meet a print deadline, skiers from 23 other nations have already entered – so once again the resort will really be living up to the tagline ‘The Fourth Saturday in August – When the World Comes to Falls Creek’.
Regardless of whether you have travelled from around the corner or around the world to be with us I hope that you all enjoy the warm hospitality and atmosphere that the Hoppet, with a lot of help from our partners and supporters in the local communities, manages to deliver to our skiing friends from around the world each year at Falls Creek.
For Our 31st Year
On behalf of Falls Creek Resort, the stakeholders, community and resort users, I extend a very warm welcome to the 2024 Hoppet athletes, sponsors, supporters, guests and volunteers.
Falls Creek Alpine Resort is Australia’s premier All Seasons Alpine Resort and Victoria’s largest ski field, with 1535ha of skiable lift assisted terrain and 65kms of cross country trails. As such, being able to host the WorldLoppet Kangaroo Hoppet is a great privilege.
Furthermore, the Hoppet provides the opportunity to showcase the resort to the many international and national visitors who are participating this year and will no doubt return to compete in the future.
The Kangaroo Hoppet is the largest snow sport event in the southern hemisphere, and this is testament to the organising committee, race committee, volunteers and sponsors, who’s passion and determination has contributed to and will continue to ensure the race and the carnival atmosphere
While welcoming skiers and friends to the event, I would like also take the liberty of speaking on your behalf to acknowledge and thank the groups without whom there would not be an event – beginning with our three major sponsors and partners AGL, Falls Creek Alpine Resort and the Mount Beauty & District Community Bank, and moving on to the Falls Creek cross country grooming team, without whom there would not be a course to ski on.
Finally, to leave the best to last, a HUGE THANKS to the members of our organising committees, our race office staff, the team from Alpine Timing and the small army of volunteers from the local and cross country skiing communities who are the backbone of our operations .. with special mention of Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty and Falls Creek SES.

KANGAROO HOPPET WEEK 2024
The 2024 Hoppet Dozen
The Hoppet Dozen, available only from the Kangaroo Hoppet Race Office in Mount Beauty provides a unique chance to sample wines from three of our local north east Victorian wineries.
The number of grape varieties grown in the Alpine and King Valleys means that getting a range of wines in the mix is never a challenge, the hardest part is deciding what to leave out. This year we have two wine varieties making their first appearance in the Hoppet Dozen. From Sam Miranda we have a Gruner Veltliner and from Gapsted a Primitivo.
According to Wikipedia, Primitivo is a robust red wine traditionally grown in Apulia in southern Italy where it was introduced in the 18th century, and Kratošija in Montenegro, while genetic analysis indicates that it is the grape known as Zinfandel in California. Gruner Veltliner on the other hand is a dry white wine that compares favourably to Reisling and Chardonnay, and is widely grown north of the alps especially in Austria and the Czech Republic. Our Hoppet tasting
team were impressed and hope that you will be also.
Beautifully packed in six bottle presentation packs of either reds or whites, and priced at just $90 for six bottles, the Hoppet Dozen is a unique opportunity to broaden your north east wine experience. And they also make a very nice Xmas gift – if you can keep them for that long.

Allow Disabled Wintersport Australia to Expand
Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) has a newfound presence at Falls Creek this year thanks to its new location in the old ticket office gifted by resort management.
The initial plans included a shipping container on the mountain for the charity, (which has 120 guides on the books) to store equipment for participants. Lincoln Budge, 38, resorts co-ordinator of the DWA, recalls how Stuart Smythe, Chief Operating Officer at Falls Creek Resort first thought of the idea to give the charity free access to the ticket office adjacent to the Halley’s Comet chairlift in Slalom Plaza.
Lincoln said: “He (Stuart) was looking out of the window of the 1550 cafe and he mentioned to us all that the building was going to be empty this season. So we came over and had a look… It was quickly organised and he gave it to us. So, it was unexpected but very much appreciated.”
The new space, which has increased participant numbers, has seen renovations including an office and shelving for air skis. It allows equipment to be kept dry and warm for participants and for adjustments to be made quickly if necessary.
The DWA is for those who have a longterm disability, such as visual impairments, long term injuries and both intellectual and developmental disabilities.
DWA equipment at Falls including 15 sit skis worth $100,000 previously had to be transported from Howman’s Gap to the mountain. The charity has other equipment including tethers.
NEW FACILITIES AT FALLS
One of the top suppliers to the DWA is Mark Sower, 46, ex-Paralympian and owner of Adaptative Concepts Australia. His business is the only importer of sit skis in Australia, sourcing supplies from Japan, France and America.
Sit skis retail at around $15,000, including a full set of outriggers and specialist bindings, as standard bindings are not capable of holding a sit ski.
This highlights the good work of DWA which allows participants to either have a guided ski day or simply rent the equipment for a day provided they are safe to do so.
Lincoln added: “It’s for people who can’t afford a sit ski or only ski now and then. They won’t have to spend $15,000, to use it once a year.”
The inspiration to set up Adaptive Concepts Australia came from Mark and Lincoln’s own experiences of having to use guesswork when purchasing gear. The pair started volunteering for the DWA in 2005 and 2010,
respectively. Lincoln took on his official role for the charity last year.
When competing in the Paralympics, Mark had to directly contact manufacturers in Japan and import independently without any means to test the sit ski prior to the purchase.
Mark said: “And that is how it all started. I realised that we as a national team needed to get the gear here. We were all importing stuff and Australia is so far away. So, we put in group orders and we were just continually putting group orders. Then suppliers just basically said ‘you're going to be our dealer.’”
Lincoln added: “It’s definitely got a lot easier to access equipment in Australia because of Mark.”
Mark has a store with products so customers can sit in each of the products to determine what size fits them best. There are five distinct types of mono sit skis that are suited for different body types and terrain.
On busy weekends, the charity can host an excess of 200 people at Falls, including family members, guides, and participants. The new space at Falls has undoubtedly created a better environment for the charity to expand on the resort.

LOCAL HISTORY
The Skiing Swaggie
Late afternoon on 21st August 1936, four ski tourers stumbled into Cope Hut. Their journey from Fitzgerald’s Hut had been a “white hell.” Their entry in the Cope Hut visitor’s book provides some insight of their experience:
“Terrific N.W. wind with maddening drift snow as well as snowing intermittently. Owing to hard icy patches we had often to shoulder our skis. Never will the members of the party forget the ordeal of literally crawling over the ice to this hut from the pole line.”
The men, members of the Ski Club of Victoria (S.C.V.), were dismayed to discover that they were immediately compelled to venture back out in the blizzard to collect wood. The scarcity of firewood was totally unexpected as it was tradition that hut users ensured ample supplies were always left for those that followed. The lack of firewood was attributed to a “hobo” found in the hut when the group arrived.
Four days later another entry provided some details of this lone occupant. He was, according to Bill Robertson, “surely the most extraordinary snow traveller in existence.”
The description of the man was akin to that of the swagman who walked the roads of rural Australia, getting by on transient
labouring jobs and living off the land.
“He was literally dressed in rags, and although he carried a self-made wheat-sack pack, he had very little food. His skis were a couple of slabs hewn out of snow gums with the natural bend from the trunk to limb forming the upward toe turns. Each was over seven feet long, one being a few inches shorter than the other. The bindings were an indescribable mixture of wombat hide (self-tanned), rope and wire, and his “ski boots” were rubber waders. For stocks he used a couple of sharpened snow gum sticks with cross-pieces tied on with wombat hide for handles.”
The extraordinary circumstances of the encounter with the solo traveller above the snowline led to one of the S.C.V. party talking to the press. An article titled “The Mystery Man of the Bogongs” appeared in the Sydney illustrated magazine, “Smiths Weekly” on 12 September (http:/nla.gov. au/nla.news-page25420477). The “skiing

A lovely shot of the new entrance to Cope Hut, knick-named the Menzies of the High Plains because, when it was built in 1929, it was the flashest of all the huts and could sleep 12, had a stone fire place, some running water, a store room and a wash/ change room. The original entrance was on the high side into the wash/change room, but it was soon established that the high side held too much drifting snow which blocked the door. Pic – Ken Bell
swagman,” identified as H Price, was a “sterling bushman… quite self-contained in a Robinson Crusoe fashion.” He had made his two bowie knives, ski bindings, leggings and carried a rifle, frying pan, billy and a possum-skin sleeping bag.
Since he set out alone in early June from the Crooked River area in Gippsland, Price had covered over 160 kilometres. Following the Wongungarra River to the foot of Mt Selwyn he had made his way to Mt St Bernard and Mt Hotham. A route via Whiskey Flat then took him down over the Cobungra River to the Bogong High Plains. Price reportedly had intended to go to Tawonga Hut, but after erring with the pole line had spent a night in the snow near No. 1 Pole. From there he made for Cope Hut.
Unrelenting blizzards kept Price at Cope Hut for at least five days, conditions which also confined the S.C.V. party to Fitzgerald’s Hut and were to have disastrous consequences for another party of three ski tourers on Mt Bogong.
The weather improved the morning after the S.C.V. party arrived and Price set out for Kelly’s Hut. He evidently prolonged his sojourn above the snow line by availing himself of stores cached at the huts prewinter
for touring parties! By midday the blizzard had been rekindled and Price, having mended a broken ski at the S.E.C Hut, reappeared. In the meantime, two of the S.C.V. men collected stores from Middle Creek Spur. They learned from Tom and Brendan Fitzgerald from Shannon Vale of the death of Cleeve Cole after he, Mick Hull and Howard Michell had been caught out in the blizzard on Mt Bogong.
Despite the dire news the next morning in driving sleet and wind Price again set out for Kelly’s Hut, according to Robertson, “refusing our offer to accompanying

him part of the way - thus continuing a meandering of the mountains which appears to be so aimless.”
After two more days of strong winds, heavy rain and driving snow the party at Cope Hut decided to curtail their trip, but first committed to replenishing the wood supplies. On the 25 August their last entry in the Cope Hut book recorded that “we had the only decent fire since our arrival last Friday. There is plenty of wood for the next party. We only hope the hobo we have found here does not return to burn what we have left.” •

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS
Spring has Sprung?
As we draw closer to the Kangaroo Hoppet, (Only one week to go!!), I am sure many of us are a little concerned about the snow levels once again. While we have had beautiful conditions over the past week, it may have been a little too nice… I am sure many of us have been out there enjoying the sun, a friendly reminder while out in the sun and snow to wear some sunscreen and be sure to pack plenty of hydration on those long skis.
Ski de Femme
Last weekend our beloved Nordic Bowl held Birkebeiners annual Ski de Femme. 140 plus women joined us for a lovely morning out in the sun, with a range of abilities, wanting to learn to cross-country ski for the first time all the way thorough to experts wanting to refine their technique.
Following the lessons, was my favourite part… the scones with jam and cream! With a little chatter here and there over a tea and coffee, before the fun race. There was a choice between 1km, 2.5km or a 5km. I was certainly proud to see some of my group out there pushing for the lead.
While the race may not have been everyone’s “cup of tea” the advantage of the taking part was an automatic entry into the spot prizes. Ski de Femme is known for a huge and great

selection of spot prizes. From a Falls Creek resort entry pass, locally made jewellery, Brazen Brownies, and even locally crafted beer. There was nearly a prize for everyone. Thank you to all the volunteers from the day, we would not be able to run such a great event year after year without your help! I know the women of Falls Creek and beyond, appreciate the opportunity to get together and refine their skills.
One Week till Hoppet
As the Hoppet approaches, rapidly I must say! I thought I would share some tips on preparing for a skiing Marathon. My advice comes from personal experience racing marathons professionally over in Europe. I race up to 700km during a European season, over around 14 weekends. It is super important to prepare your body with the right nutrition and rest in the week before.
While I won’t necessarily recommend “Carbo Loading” as the Hoppet is not a super long race, I am not against everyone getting amongst a nice big bowl of pasta a couple of days out and the night before.
1. Number 1 on my list, don’t worry about what you can’t control; Snow levels? Try not to think of it! Will I win my age group and get a Hoppet mug? Maybe, but better race fast!
2. Prepare your drink! Hoppet is Plastic Cup free, this means you need to carry a bottle or camelback with you while you cruise around the course. There will be opportunities to fill up your bottle out on the feed stations. If you don’t have the opportunity to bring your bottle along with you, get a friend to have a feed for you near the damn wall or in the bowl.
3. Food! Very important, in the lead up to the race days I would recommend eating a good amount of protein, carbohydrate and hydration. A fed body is a happy body. The day before, make sure you give your body

enough hydration, this might mean you need to have some electrolytes to give your body all the salts it might need to help you NOT cramp mid race!
4. Sleep: The night before the race, don’t worry if you haven’t had the best night’s sleep, I usually find it’s the 2nd night before where the sleep is the most important.
5. Race day breakfast: On the race day try and have your breakfast around 2.5 to 3 hours before the race, this might be tricky if you are travelling up to Falls Creek early to get a car park but pack some premade Oats or toast in a container and have a coffee in a thermos. If you have ever done the Vasaloppet in Sweden, you would know about getting up at 3am to travel to the race start… Lucky here it is easier to get to the race start.
6. Have fun: Most importantly, enjoy the race day and the big skiing reunion the Hoppet seems to be. Have a great week and don’t overdo the training in the days before. •

INAUGURAL JUNIOR FREERIDE
A Promising Future
Falls Creek is thrilled to announce its inaugural Junior Freeride event this Sunday 18th
This exciting competition is set to take place on the iconic Cabbage Patch black terrain. It promises a high-energy display of talent as competitors navigate challenging terrain including cliffs, jumps, and moguls.
Open to both skiers and snowboarders with advanced riding skill, the Junior Freeride event invites young athletes to demonstrate their unique styles. Participants will be judged on various criteria, including line choice, control, technique, fluidity, air and style.
Proudly sponsored by X-Dream, the event is divided into two age categories: Juniors aged 10-14 and juniors aged 15-18. This ensures young athletes will compete among their peers, fostering a spirit of friendly competition and mutual encouragement. It’s a fantastic opportunity for young skiers and snowboarders to push their limits and experience the thrill of freeride in a safe and supportive environment.
The competition terrain has been carefully chosen to test and inspire each participant. The Cabbage Patch black terrain provides a natural playground, with a designated start location, left and right boundaries, and a finish line. Beyond these markers,
the path competitors take is entirely up to them, allowing for maximum creativity and strategic planning.
Freeride has seen substantial growth in popularity over recent years, with junior and open events occurring across the globe and Australia, including the recent Freeride World Tour Qualifier event that was held at Hotham for the first time this year. Falls Creek’s inaugural Junior Freeride at Falls event aims to capture this excitement and introduce more young Aussie athletes to the exhilarating world of freeride skiing and snowboarding.
To register for this new and exciting event, visit skifalls.com.au.•
