SPRING SKIING BONUS

From The Chief Operating Officer

As we all know, ski seasons are great, but some just greater than others. What makes a great season is very much up to the individual. Simply learning to ski or snowboard will for some, be their justification, whilst for others it might be that great family vacation and catching up with friends. For others, it could a ripper powder day, or celebrating a special occasion (FYI Sunset snowmo tours have a strong track record of ‘proposals’ on their rides). It’s all about the experiences. Speaking of experiences – the Spring Beginners Bundle is a ripper deal. Lift pass and lessons… Starts September 1st. For all the Spring opportunities – go here: Spring in Falls Creek - Falls Creek Alpine Resort.

In any case, one of the great times to visit the Alps is during early Spring. There are endless

For beginners or families with little children, this is the ideal time to introduce them to skiing and snowboarding. The weather and conditions are more predictable and the chorus of ‘I’m cold’ is quashed by basking in the sun over a hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Here at Falls Creek, with over 30 restaurants and bars to choose from, après is also another seasoned springtime tradition. And what better way than to work on that goggle tan. With a selection of on-piste options, like Cloud 9 and its “new” outdoor deck, Blue Brumby at the bottom of Main Street, or Dick Knees’ over at Ruined Castle, there’s plenty of places to take in the sun and sights. Two of the best venues particularly in September are at the bottom of the Summit Chair, at the Frying Pan Inn, or the balcony of the iconic Falls Creek Hotel.

And for those wondering about whether there’ll be any more fresh snow falls, a quick review of our SnowStats, compiled by the FC Ski Patrol team, suggests there are plenty of recent seasons where spring ‘dumps’ have been recorded.

For comparative purposes, 2017 had a huge late August/September rally (70+cms)! Then, in 2019 on 7/9 the mountain also got a nice little 20cm top up. And for those here in 2022, we had ski in ski out, right through to closing weekend thanks to the storm on 16/9 (45cm pukage). So, anything is possible. Weather is pretty unpredictable, just ask the BoM.

There are still plenty more days where snow can fall. In fact, there are no seasons since 2015 where September snow hasn’t bolstered the great vibe and fun of spring skiing.

To help seal the deal, the great work of the Falls Creek Ski Lifts snowmaking and grooming teams have laid down a phenomenal base that will see us ski into September right across the mountain.

Foodie Tip of the Week: On Piste Options:

Cloud9 (top of the Hill)

Pizza’s of the wood fired variety and very much in the Italian style are great options. Or carb load with a pasta and did I mention Waffles!

Dick Knee’s (Ruined Castle)

You had me at Kransky (with your choice of condiments), and the sweetie treatie pretzels, plus a great coffee, or something stronger if you must.

Blue Brumbies (Human Refuelling Station - bottom of Main Street)

Be sure to get in before race club kids take a break… or all the good deep fried stuff is at risk of being gone. Potato cakes (NOT

ST. Ali COFFEE

scallops), dim sims, chips plus sweet treats, plus plenty more…it’s a refuelling station after all.

Frying Pan Inn (Village Bowl – Summit Chair)

an institution that deserves its own write up and menu powered by woodfire. Lunch and Dinner menus change. But it’s about the meat (or not – as there are plenty of alternatives for all tastes – aka Healthy Bowls), but for me, it’s about the meat. Each of their cuts are superb. Usually with the cauliflower wings and curly corn…who knew veggies tasted so good.

Now, get out there a ski some spring corn. • Stuart Smythe Falls Creek Alpine Resort

Take it Home With You

It’s sad – but it keeps happening. Monday this week a fellow worker in Mount Beauty watched a chap reshuffling his car and luggage – and piling the rubbish out onto the garden kerb. That got too much and he went and confronted the driver – explaining to put the rubbish back in his car and take it to a rubbish bin – of which there are plenty in the area.

This littering makes this community – both off-mountain and in Falls - as mad as hell –and it is something we do not deserve. We love our area and we take care of our area. We have pride in our surroundings and we welcome the people who visit our area and ‘appreciate it!’

We certainly do not welcome people who think it is acceptable throw rubbish out anywhere – on the street, in the towns, in the National Park. If you can bring your take-away food and drink with you, you can take the empty containers back to a rubbish bin or to your bins at home. Nowhere in this country is rubbish acceptable.

Local Contributors

One resident, who shall remain nameless, has done, over the years, a fantastic job of walking sections of the Falls Creek Road with a garbage bag or three, covering both sides of the road and even going a bit down the slope to pick up some-one else’s garbage – usually doing four or five kilometres at a time. He then packs the garbage bags into his trailer and takes them to the tip.

A fantastic effort and one that we as a community really appreciate.

Another young lady who travels over to Bright quite a lot also has responded to her sense of decency and often stops to pick up the rubbish left along the road.

But why should we have to. It is because some other half-wit has no sense of selfrespect and absolutely no respect for the area and the environment around them. And these half-wits we do not need – at any time!

Keep Australia Beautiful

Ironically, earlier this month we had nationally, the Keep Australia Beautiful Week – from Monday 5th to Sunday 11th August – and one of the themes is to ‘Respect Our Roadsides’ Let’s do some follow up on this shall we. •

The Kangaroo Hoppet is Cancelled

The decision was announced late last week that the Kangaroo Hoppet International Ski Marathon, which is held annually at Falls Creek on the fourth Saturday in August, would have to be cancelled.

“Despite the best efforts of the cross country snow grooming team at Falls Creek and the alternative course options dreamt up by the Race Committee, the combination of rapidly deteriorating snow conditions on the course combined with the outlook for significant warm weather and rain in the forecast gave us no other option,” said Hoppet Chairman Allan Marsland, “and with many participants coming from overseas and interstate we thought it best to make the call sooner rather than later to allow them the opportunity to change their travel arrangements.”

“This is not to say that the cross country season is over at Falls Creek,” he continued, “as there is still very nice xc skiing in the higher altitude areas of Heathy Spur and Mt McKay/Pretty Valley adjacent to Falls

Creek. The problem for the Hoppet is that snow conditions on the lower trails in Sun Valley, the Dam Wall and along the Bogong High Plains Road means that it is not possible to host an event such as the Kangaroo Hoppet.”

The Hoppet Race Office adjacent to the Mount Beauty Information Centre will still be open from Friday to Sunday this weekend for the collection of pre ordered merchandise, this year’s souvenir Hoppet buff, and the sale of T shirts and the Hoppet Dozen wine six packs.

If you need some light entertainment, why not drop in to check out the range of Hoppet merchandise, especially the Hoppet Dozen wine six packs as rumour has it that they may well have a bottle or two open to taste. •

The 2024 Hoppet Dozen

The Hoppet Dozen, available only from the Kangaroo Hoppet Race Office in Mount Beauty provides a unique chance to sample wines from three of our local north east Victorian wineries.

The number of grape varieties grown in the Alpine and King Valleys means that getting a range of wines in the mix is never a challenge, the hardest part is deciding what to leave out. This year we have two wine varieties making their first appearance in the Hoppet Dozen. From Sam Miranda we have a Gruner Veltliner and from Gapsted a Primitivo.

According to Wikipedia, Primitivo is a robust red wine traditionally grown in Apulia in southern Italy where it was introduced in the 18th century, and Kratošija in Montenegro, while genetic analysis indicates that it is the grape known as Zinfandel in California. Gruner Veltliner on the other hand is a dry white wine that compares favourably to Reisling and Chardonnay, and is widely grown north of the alps especially in Austria and the Czech Republic. Our Hoppet tasting team were impressed and hope that you will be also.

Beautifully packed in six bottle presentation packs of either reds or whites, and priced at just $90 for six bottles, the Hoppet Dozen is a unique opportunity to broaden your north east wine experience. And they also make a very nice Xmas gift – if you can keep them for that long.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS

When One Door Closes…

While we all share the same sorrow of our beloved Kangaroo Hoppet being cancelled this year, the season is not over yet (Hopefully)! Throughout the past week the snow has rapidly been diminishing, however spring skiing prospects await us.

Many of our ski trails are unable to be groomed, but there is still plenty of crust to explore in our national park. Most importantly, we need a good freeze to once again set up the crust for a nice firm base.

If you do plan to head out on a crust ski adventure, it is important to remember a few things:

- Head out early: The best conditions are usually before the sun hits the track. I recommend starting before 8am, that way you will get the place to yourself and will be able to get out to your destination relatively quickly.

- Plan ahead: Check out a map and plan your route, most of us know where we are going, but it could be worthwhile planning out your route, particularly if you are going a long way. Also remember the snow will soften and your journey back might take a bit longer than expected.

- Take your Phone: Remember to take your mobile phone with you, and if going alone, remember to tell someone where you plan to go. No matter how experienced, you never know if you might take a tumble and may be unable to get back. Call Falls Creek Ski Patrol if you ever are in trouble, (03) 5758 3502. Save the number in your phone! Pack your phone somewhere safe so that you don’t break it if you do have a fall.

- Hydration and food: If you have a water belt, or a Camel-pack, it is important to make sure that is stocked with all the hydration or snacks you might need. Electrolytes or a sort of sport powder is essential for those spring skiing days. We sweat more during these warmer times, and I wouldn’t want you to have a headache later on. Snacks are also important, chocolate, bars or nuts are great items to keep the energy up.

- Sun protection: Sunscreen is a must!! I always take a little sunscreen stick with me for top-ups after about two hours of skiing in the sun, plus some sunscreen lip balm is also important. A peak cap is also an addition you could think about, keeping that direct sun off your face

Aerial shot of the Hoppet start area – which we sadly missed this year. Pic – Charlie Brown

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS

will certainly help prevent any light or direct heat on your face and eyes. Most importantly, a good pair of sunglasses is a must, especially some that cover the sides of the eyes, so sunlight doesn’t blaze in.

Races to Come!

Would you believe that the races are not done! While the snow is going fast, there are plans to still hold the Australian Junior National Championships. On Saturday the 31st of August and Sunday the 1st of September is the Skate Sprint and Classic distance.

Juniors under the age of 20 are able to compete, a great opportunity for our young races to get some more racing experience in, and potentially qualify for the Australian Junior National Team. Hopefully the snow will hold in time for the races, but the beauty of a race series like this, versus the Hoppet is the ability to race in a much smaller area.

Sunday to Thursday: 10am - 9pm Friday & Saturday: 10am - 10pm Call in and take advantage of our great range of THIRSTY CAMEL Specials to save bucks! Join the Thirsty Camel Hump Club for even better deals!

Fingers crossed our juniors are able to race and if you are planning on taking part, keep an eye on Snow Australia’s website for race entry. For more information visit www.snow.org.au or contact the race secretary on 0409 332 642.

Have Fun!

No matter what you plan on doing this spring, have a great time and enjoy what snow we have left. Otherwise dust off your mountain bike or update your running shoes and ease into the dryland training. We are involved in a wonderful sport! •

I DREAM OF SNOW

Why be Mainstream?

I’ve been collecting Ski Country Bourbon Whiskey decanters for about 10 years. They first sparked my interest as while I was searching for ski vintage, I found a decanter shaped like a vintage leather five buckle ski boot, made by Ezra Brooks, and was instantly smitten. After finding that first decanter, I started wondering how many other snow related decanters may be out there. And so, the hunt for snow themed decanters was on.

In the 1960s ceramic figure decanters became popular in the USA. They were mass produced with thousands of the decanter being sold. Jim Beam was a leader in these decanters, but Ezra Brooks, Lionstone, Old Taylor and others released ceramic decanter shapes ranging from the Old Taylor distillery castle to vintage ski boots, to Elvis. The more rare and valuable ones were created for special events or groups. There may only be hundreds of these types of decanters, and they will have a greater value to collectors.

The Ezra Brooks brand was created by Frank Silverman in 1957 and was bottled at the Hoffman Distilling Company, in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, up until Hoffman Distilling Co. went out of business in the 1970s. In 1993, Ezra Brooks was purchased by a company called Luxco.

The Foss Drug Company, who sold liquor in Colorado for more than 100 years, partnered

with Luxco and introduced a house bourbon called Ski Country in 1972 that came in a choice of three porcelain art decanters sculpted in the form of skiers. The porcelain liquor decanters were produced in limited quantities and bottled by Ski Country Ltd., in St. Louis, Missouri.

For nearly 25 years Foss & Luxco would produce 195 different decanter designs, that were extremely popular. The Ski Country decanters became a big part of Luxco’s business, with all the bottles were allocated and sold before even being produced! The sales team would sell the decanters from pictures, the retailers would take orders from bottle collectors, and from the pre-sales we knew how many to produce. Like the American Kelley Blue Book for cars, there existed a trading “blue book” for decanter values and the Ski Country decanters were routinely at the top of the list as the most valuable.

But, by the 1990s, the decanter craze was over.

My vintage snow decanter collection is predominantly made up of Ezra Brooks and Ski Country decanters. I’m always hoping to unearth a new brand in my searches, and one day maybe I will. But for now, my little decanter collection brings a smile to my face and a snow themed ornamental element to my bookshelves.

So next time you’re wondering what to add to your bookshelves to get that Three Birds Renovation styling look, which reflects your passion for snow and can’t be bought in a shopping centre, visit www.idreamofsnow. com

Maybe what’s missing in your styling vision board is a vintage snow decanter shaped ornament. After all, why be like everybody else and settle for being mainstream. • Cheers, Nyree

I have not one single hope, I won’t get on the slope. I hear the sound of tyres spin Whilst warm seeps through beneath the skin

It was seven degrees, With not even a light breeze. Snow melting by the second, My dreams and hopes were reckoned.

We were told of an immense polar blast, Now our hopes are fading fast. I want to leave this heated place, With not a single snowy trace.

Less than 20 runs are open, Please more snow, that’s all I’m hopin.’ Winters song was once clear, But now I certainly struggle to hear

Greta Thunberg was very right, Global warming is a fright. Not one single hope I simply cannot cope!

This poem was written to visualise my personal feelings of waking up to another day of these depressing winter conditions because of my personal love and aspiration for the snow. This will most likely be more meaning full to me rather than anyone else. Whilst writing this poem I reflected on the world’s major climate issues like global warming, which was a theme throughout the poem. The major poetic

DEPRESSION

techniques that I used in this poem was rhyme which I used throughout the entire poem. I also incorporated metaphoric lines to explain my question on global warming and the feature of snow. My other quite used poetic device would be imagery as I talked about the “immense polar blast.” My poem tried to convey my feelings of hopelessness for my personal selfish gain of snowboarding. •

Add to these trails the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks around the Bogong High Plains and your exploring, whether on foot or on your bike is endless. THOUGHT OF THE DAY

The late John Blackman (of Hey Hey fame) had a very quick wit. One day, from the booth, he said to Daryl “What’s the difference between light and hard?” “OK, I give up” said Daryl. “You can go to sleep with the light on!” was the reply!

MISSING BOOK

A hard-bound copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was given to this community in the care of the late Bill Sutton. It has been loaned out –and not returned. This is a vital piece of the history of this area and it would be fabulous to have it returned. Any news, please call 0400 350 488.
