STILL SUMMER At Falls Creek
A
s a basic rule of thumb, during a hot summer, the temperature drops by one degree celsius per 100 metres altitude as you travel up the hill. The BHP Road at the golf course is at an altitude of 400 metres. Rocky Valley Dam at Falls Creek is at an altitude of 1600 metres above seas level. This gives us an altitude difference of 1200 metres – and if it’s one degree cooler per 100 metres then if the temperature in the valley is 40°C, then the temperature on the high plains will be around 28°C. Certainly makes the trip to Falls Creek a viable proposition. And what do we do while you’re up at Falls? Well, bring your mountain bike and take advantage of the Blue Dirt shuttles. Make the most of every weekend between now and the 23rd of April, 2019. $65 per day or $120 for two days. Book on-line at www. bluedirt.com.au. If you fancy just going for a cruise, the Bogong High Plains around Falls Creek has about 30km of aqueduct trail and even more management vehicle tracks that you can ride all around in the National Park. Talk to the fabulous team in the Visitor Information Centre, upstairs cnr Slalom Street and BHP Road or phone 03 5758 1202. •
The banks of Rocky Valley are great cool place to spend the day and enjoy the wonderful spectacle of the Dragon Boats on the lake. Pic – Ken Bell
Dragon Boats The Mile High Dragon Boat Regatta is an annual event on the calendar which enables expert and novice paddlers alike join in the fun on the highest body of water, Rocky Valley Lake. Everyone is welcome to join in or just enjoy a picnic on the foreshore and spectate. Practice takes place on Saturday afternoon and if you’re keen to join a team, that’s the time to commit. Racing starts bright and early on the Sunday. For guests, this is a fantastic weekend to spend at Falls Creek. The grassy banks of Rocky Valley are a beautiful place to spend the day with the family and soak in the excitement of the races. Food and drinks are also available on the foreshore.

The event does have a strong local connection with ultra-running legend Andy Kromar holding the course record for over 20 years before it was finally knocked off by Julien Spence in 2017. Some of Andy’s exploits will live on in posterity as truly inspirational efforts. You would think that Ben would have some ‘feet up’ time after this effort, but more likely than not you’ll see him out running on the trails at Falls Creek! •

THE ROOFTOP RUN An Awesome Event Bogong to Hotham 2019 could only be described as a perfect day on the mountain. The weekend kicked off with the safety gear check and race briefing for all participants followed by a great social gathering at Flour + Water for pre-race carb loading dinner. 6am on Saturday 6th at Mountain creek camp ground saw 61 runners head off for the challenge and an awesome day in the mountains. The weather was the best it has been for over 10 years with near perfect conditions for running and thanks to the fantastic track work carried out by Parks Vic in the lead up to the event, runners had a clear and fast run. 41 of 48 runners making it through the 35km Langford’s Gap check point under the 6hr time limit, with all going on to complete the 64km. In the 35km event 12 of the 13 starters completed the event in under the 7hr cut off, while the 12 starters that took on the 29km second leg all completed the course making a finish rate of 87% the most successful rate in many years.

of the races he was doing. MR: What are your goals for this year, more EWS or is going to be too hard to juggle school? Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time. MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer? Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side. MR: Do you think you’d be able to develop a career and race at the same time? Ben: Yeah, looking at someone like Paul The new website, ‘This Week in Falls Creek.com’ is only part of the improvements made at This Week. Pic – Courtesy The Social Knot

DINING OUT Roi’s in Tawonga
R
oi Rigoni and Sue White came into town in the mid-nineties and it wasn’t long before what had previously been a quiet Asian restaurant was transformed into a warm and inviting Italian Restaurant titled Roi’s Diner – opening in September 1996. Growing up in North Carlton in a family who loved their cooking it wasn’t long before an apprenticeship at William Angliss led Roi into a career as a chef. Agency work took Roi to many of the top restaurants in Melbourne and also Adelaide – but the desire to ‘do his own thing’ meant a move from the city. He and Sue were working on the idea of a more stable
lifestyle and a quality restaurant in the beautiful upper reaches of the Kiewa Valley was just what was required. “We wanted to be everything that Melbourne is not.” Being involved in the local community is another enjoyable aspect of life outside the big smoke and one super program that Roi got into was the ‘Secret Men’s Business’ initiative at the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre. This was a simple, but important program that taught men to cook – some just because they wanted to learn to cook - others because they had lost their partner/s and needed to learn to cook to be able to properly look after themselves. This once a week program provided a social outlet for those involved, taught men to cook successfully and the program received considerable acclaim for its recognition of a community need. Some years ago, the restaurant changed from Roi’s Diner to Roi’s Restaurant – along the way gaining considerable recognition in The Age Good Food Guide over many years – with the famous Pork Chop almost going international. The menu at Roi’s is varying – currently offering five delicious pasta dishes as either entrée or main. Then there are four of five dedicated entrées –all Italian inspired and tasty.

tackle dessert – and the biggest decision “how much of Roi’s home-made icecream can we have? – or should it be the Rumballs?” The restaurant caters well for vegans and provides a quality range of Gluten Free choices. The wine list is considerable and provides a comprehensive choice of local wines including wines from Beechworth, the King Valley, Mornington, Heathcote and also from SA.
