Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2021 Edition FOUR

MTB de FEMME Specifically for the Gals

A

fter a two-year hiatus due to the dreaded you know what, MTB de Femme is returning to Falls Creek in 2022. Put these dates in your diary: Friday 4th March to Sunday 6th March – the weekend before Peaks Challenge. The ethos of the event is based on getting women riding the trails at Falls Creek in a friendly and safe environment. Better still, the original event founder Jo Prothero and event co-ordinator Xena Pahina will be running the event. I wonder how many will remember the very first MTB de Femme back in January of 2016. The organisers hoped for about 35. About fifty ladies advised that they were coming and just on 75 turned up for a fabulous day. So many great comments like: “I had the best day yesterday! Woke up this morning wanting to come back! Everything was awesome… So well organised. The guides, the coffee makers, the staff at Milch and the bar we finished up at (BE Foodstore), the girls on bikes, the weather, the scenery, the ride, the shuttle guys… absolutely everything (hope I didn't forget anyone ). Thank you so much!” Krishna Castricum. “Best Day Ever!! Thanks so much FCRM for a super fun event! A big shout out to Rachel Whipps and Jo Prothero for being awesome group leaders and creating a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere. I'm stoked for the next Female MTB Social Ride!” Catherine Robichaud So many women have had a bad first experience on a mountain bike. We’ve all been there, riding their partner’s ‘old’ bike and following them down a technical trail, scaring the pants off them, (not literally), leaving them never wanting to get back on the bike again! MTB de Femme is all about changing that.

The very first MTB de Femme back on 10th January, 2016 – the start of a fabulously popular MTB event. Pic – Ken Bell

MTB de Femme is all about getting out on the bike, having a laugh, learning a few new skills, and connecting with like-minded women - with coffee, lunch and champagne added to the mix! Not sure if it’s for you, that’s ok. “There is something for everyone” says founder Jo Prothero. “You can sign up for the social ride aspect, a full day of activity, all the way through to the entire weekend of learning, riding, bike maintenance, yoga and socialising.” Shuttle passes for your riding can also part of the deal.

immerse yourself in a weekend away. Isn’t it time that Dad spent a bit of quality time with the kids while you play!!! “We are super pumped to be getting back out on the trails at Falls with lots of familiar faces and encourage you to book early so you don’t miss out on this rad weekend” Jo added. CHRISTMAS ‘Tis Better to Give…

W

e here in the Upper Kiewa Valley are still a couple of weeks away from Christmas, but reports coming in from local businesses are that you, our dear readers, are shopping local more than any other year! After a tough couple of years that have included bushfires, COVID and losing almost all of our tourists thanks to lockdowns, it’s no secret our small businesses have been hurting more than ever. So it’s fantastic to hear these businesses are now busier than ever, with locals, visitors and holiday home owners all making the switch from giant chain businesses and deciding to keep their hard earned dollars here in the valley this Christmas. Of course, we also have to commend our businesses for the vast range of goods they have on offer, with them all growing bigger and better year after year. We’re absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to gifts for all ages and interests, whether it’s gear for the outdoor lovers, books, games and toys, clothing for every occasion, sustainable and locally made wares, and more - so it really is

a no brainer when it comes to choosing where to shop. We can also see how busy it’s been by our Shop Local Campaign. On the 1st December we distributed books of raffle tickets to the 11 local businesses involved and not even a week later, we were already having to hand out more, with hundreds of tickets already filled out by shoppers. If you haven’t already heard, our Shop Local campaign is an extra incentive to keep your Christmas shopping in the valley this year. Some of our local businesses have rallied together to offer two amazing prizes to two lucky shoppers - $350 and $200 worth of gift vouchers. All you have to do is spend $30 in store at a participating business during the month of December and you’ll be in the running!

CHRISTMAS Students were then given incentives to sell tickets and did an incredible job raising money for their school. The whole thing was a huge success - we’ve spoken to multiple businesses who sold multiple gift vouchers as prizes for the raffle, and said they really appreciated the change in approach by the school. To put it simply - we just love hearing that locals are supporting locals, and it plays a huge part in what keeps this community going. So go out, spend $30, put yourself in the running to win some great prizes and have a fantastic Christmas! •

LOCAL TALENT Great Success After much deliberation, and after reviewing the community consultation that AGL included as part of the application to introduce a waterway rule, MSV has published its decision to allow for the waterway’s rule introduction, effective of 9 December 2021. This means that users of the pondage, including for powered watercraft, will need to stick to the speed limit of 5 Knots on the Pondage from 9 December 2021. For a lot of people who participated in the community consultation, I know that this may not be the result that some of the Pondage’s users were hoping for. We heard from many people of their fond memories of using the Pondage for speed boating and jet skiing. As a lot of community members have also voiced to us, safe usage of the Pondage is of paramount importance to us. As waterway manager for the Mount Beauty Regulating Pondage, AGL has a responsibility to manage the foreseeable risks to all users.

Mount Beauty Pondage, and will also publish a number of advertisements, and update our website so that people are aware of the rule change. We hope all users will still be able to enjoy the Pondage with the new speed limit in place, as well as explore the spectacular Upper Kiewa Valley, a place that AGL is proud to call home. This community has a very good reputation for ‘digging in’ and supporting worthy causes. Another shining example of people giving are the regular Community Raffles held at Wet Peak each Friday. The good news is that these raffles have raised over $50,000 in the past four years (including a year’s worth of lockdowns).

And the reason these organisations can benefit is because of the generous contributions of our sponsors who provide the weekly prizes. Therefore, a special thanks to: – Cavanaghs Butchery Tallangatta, Vegitation, Tawonga South Store and Newsagency, Honeybird Coffee, Pizzini Wines, Gapsted Wines, Bridge Rd Brewery.

The local community groups that have benefitted include – UKV Lions, RSL, Mount Beauty Golf Club, Playgroup, The Men’s Shed, Tawonga CFA, Mount Beauty CFA, Mount Beauty United Cricket Club, Mount Beauty Primary School, our local
