DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Continued Development
O
ver the past three weeks, an occupational therapy (OT) student from Deakin University and two physiotherapy (PT) students from Charles Sturt University have been completing a clinical placement at Falls Creek with Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA). These placements are funded by Going Rural Health and provide unique opportunities for students to complete placements in rural settings. One of the tasks of this placement for the students is to complete a project with the aim of improving resources for DWA. James, our OT student, is creating three resources based on sensory processing. Samantha and Tahlia, our two PT students, are aiming to create a more interactive version of the Level 1 and Level 2 guide quizzes. The projects have a focus on providing information that will allow families and individuals to best prepare for the snow experience as well as improving disability awareness for DWA guides.
The placement has helped to develop the students' knowledge and skills in project development, a great skill to have as a new grad. It has also allowed the students to increase their understanding of how adaptive equipment can improve participation in snow sports for all individuals with a disability. When speaking to the students they expressed how amazing this opportunity had been From left: Tahlia Goodwin, Samantha Lee, James Nesbitt and their so far. “This placement has placement supervisor Kylie Boscolo taken outside the Howman’s Gap DWA facility. The time spent here has been such a great experience receiving DWA guide training and experiencing first-hand what it is like to be in a participant's shoes using the equipment they would also use. The three week period has been a great opportunity to work with participants at the snow and use my knowledge as an occupational therapy student to help create some resources that may aid participants for their time at the snow.” • Student - Tahlia Goodwin (PT student CSU) – “I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity to combine recreation and education, where I can apply my physiotherapy skills in a unique context. Having hands on experience with a company that promotes participation and fun for all individuals is absolutely incredible. I have learnt so much over the last three weeks and I can't wait to develop my knowledge and skills further during the last two weeks of placement.” •

RACE CLUB NEWS Race Club Programs
O
nce again, I’m looking at the Bureau of Meteorology App and wondering if the forecast is going to make good on its predictions, crossing fingers, toes and everything else that the temperatures are going to drop below zero and we’ll get lots of the good stuff over the next week… or at least freezing temperatures to allow for snow making! It’s that time of July again where the Mountain welcomes SASKI, the South Australian Interschool’s Snowsports competition as well as all our friends from the southern state for their annual snow holiday (or one of many visits over the season). Good luck to all the South Australian kids as they compete for podium places and for the ability to attend the National Interschool’s competition in 2021 against the best snow athletes from the states and territories across Australia. Two weeks ago, we celebrated the Victorian School Holidays with a Race Club get together for the first time in almost a year. We held a ‘Season Opener’ dinner at the Frying Pan Inn, which was a much delayed catch up for many Race Club Members who have not seen each other in 12 months. As we have come to expect from the Traverse Alpine Group, the food at Fryers was great, the drinks were flowing, the staff were amazing and a good time was had by all. Thank you to all the members who purchased good and services from local businesses to put into a fantastic gift basket that was raffled off on the night, and to Committee Member Caroline Hunt-Smith for organising the raffle. A special thanks to Committee Member Sam Thomas for organising the Season Opener for the Club and also finding the very talented singer and guitarist Jesse Eddy to get us all singing and dancing through the evening. This week will mark the start of our Race Club programs for 2021. Full time season programs start on Wednesday, Part Time on Friday and Weekend Programs on Saturday,
and the Master’s programs on Wednesday and Sunday. We hope everyone is as excited as we are to be back training on-snow with Race Coaches, to be honing our skills in such a beautiful environment all while having fun with mates. CROSS COUNTRY NEWS High Plains Tour
Y
our race report on the Snow Trek and Travel High Plains Tour held last Saturday 10th July 2021.
It was smiles were all around for the first cross country ski race held last Saturday – and the first since 2019. A beautiful day and a lovely groomed track greeted skiers at Falls Creek for the Snow Trek and Travel High Plains Tour, organised by the Howman’s Gap All Stars ski club. Many were desperate to have a race and there were 77 entries covering the four course distances. They included Phil Bellingham who had returned from Europe and just been released from COVID-19 quarantine. He was itching for some outdoor exercise and that clearly showed
as he won the 10km in 28m 21 sec which was a minute and 11 sec ahead of Australian team members Seve de Campo and Nick Blackwell, a further 10 seconds behind. Kathy Ismail Four year old Fedya Belov won the 10km supporting his six year old sister as she begins here racing career ahead of Rachel Hood in the 1km High Plains Tour. Pic – Courtesy the Belov family and Emile Fary. The 5km was won by Jack Lowman and Anna Trnka. The 2.5km was won by Beau Dugan and Evelyn Armitage. The 1km saw Oliver Brewergray and Scarlett Stroud as first boy and girl. There were some pleasant surprise returns to XC racing after long absences, including Cal Britten and Peter Tonkin. Peter had his first race in 20 years. YMCA Howman’s Gap Manager Michael Jowett went around the 10km course on classic skis. On the 1km course 6yo Vasilisa Belov had her first race and she was proudly supported from the sidelines by her mum and 4yo brother Fedya, both of whom were also cheering for dad Gleb competing in the 10km.

There were some challenges to being able to put on a race, including being the first event to have to prepare and observe COVID-19 protocols. Having to switch for the first time to on-line entry and payment was assisted by Finn Marsland and Snow Australia. Our volunteer timing, results and database guru Mick Sinclair was able to smoothly cope with the change, as did the race participants. The snow conditions were better than expected from the thin cover. The resort grooming team of Lucas Smith and Geoff Sorenson were able to put together a very good race track for us. Preparation for the race was also assisted by resort management office staff who helped with the course maps. They included Elise Armitage who also got the XC skis out and raced. Race sponsors Snow Trek and Travel kindly provided spot prizes and awards for the age group and overall winners. Thanks especially though goes to all those people who supported the race by entering it. Results are available on Mick’s website at HGA Race Weekend - Home Page (dbstrategies.com.au). Thanks also to all of our wonderful volunteers – without who we would not have an event. • Len Budge

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS This Weekend XC racing at Falls Creek this weekend is focused on the Victorian Junior Championships and the regional interschools event. Snow Australia will be conducting a cross country inter-schools event in the Nordic Bowl on Friday which will be followed by the Victorian Junior Sprint Championships on Saturday and the Victoria Junior Distance Championships on Sunday. Racing at this level, while well organised, is based on inclusion with entry level courses and a great atmosphere for competitors and spectators. Entries for the events are located online at www.alpinetiming.com.au – where you will also see the full results after the event. Racing will kick off at 9:30m on Saturday with the sprint time trial and will be followed by the knockout heats and finals. The distance events on Sunday begin at 10am. skiers are heading up the Pretty Valley Road to Mt McKay region and beyond. To access this, cross country skiers must cross Wombats Ramble and ski up the Pretty Valley Road, which for several hundred metres is also ‘Days End’ downhill ski run. Please be very careful when doing this, give
way to downhill skiers and snow boarders and stay as far to the left when skiing up as possible. It is part of the international skier’s code to give way to the downhill skier and nobody wants to be involved in an accident so please lookout and stick to the left. • Andrew Hall

Last Week We have enjoyed some fantastic xc skiing this week at Falls Creek. Dry snow, cold temps and careful grooming have meant that even though the base is thin the skiing conditions have been outrageous. It has certainly shown that you don’t need a metre of snow to have fun. There is still not enough snow to groom over the dam wall, but the inner trails and those up and around Mt McKay have been stellar. Morning hard wax diagonal striding has been as good as it gets, and they tell me the skating has been pretty good as well. Happy & Wine 5pm - 11pm & FREE Bar Snacks 5pm - 11pm. COMFORTABLE SKIING Truth About Compression Socks
C
ompression socks have become ‘a thing’ in skiing in recent years. Unless you’ve used them – or even if you have – you may not know what they are for and how they work. Or why you would even consider them.
What are compressions socks? Compression socks traditionally come from medical management of venous (blood flowing from your body back to your heart) pathologies. They come in various lengths and provide a squeeze around your leg to help prevent pooling of veinous blood and fluid in your legs, ankles and feet. They help your veins (the vessels taking blood back to your heart). They don’t help your arteries (the vessels taking blood from your heart to your body’s bits). The gentle squeeze on your legs increases pressure on your tissue beneath the skin,
which helps the veins keep the fluid moving up the leg and stop it leaking into the surrounding tissue. Muscles contracting in your leg are also essential to keep this fluid moving back up to your heart, as there is no heart in your feet to pump the blood back up. Not all compression socks are created equal. The material, the durability, the compression pressure, and the size all vary. Medical grade compression socks are prescribed for venous insufficiency diseases, and are often put on people in hospital post-surgery to prevent DVT.
Compression Levels • Mild = 15-20mmHg: Prevention and relief of minor to moderate varicose veins, relief of tired aching legs, relief of minor swelling of feet and legs. • Moderate = 20-30mmHg: Prevention and relief of moderate to severe varicose veins, treatment of moderate to severe lymphatic oedema and management of active ulcers or post thrombotic syndrome. • Firm = 30-40mmHg: Ulcer management, post thrombotic syndrome. Ski compression socks sit in the mild compression level – because we’re not looking at pathological management of diseases, we’re looking at sport performance.
What don’t they do?
Creative looks in all aspects of Hairdressing ~ Barbering ~ Professional Makeups with Eco Friendly Sustainable Products.
Compression socks do not help arterial blood – the blood with oxygen that the tissues need – get to the extremities, ie. They do not help if you have cold toes and want them to get warmer. In fact, if you have cold toes (from poor blood circulation) it’s recommended that you don’t wear compression socks because these can further reduce the oxygenated blood getting to your toes – leading to even colder toes.
How do they help skiing? Well, in all honesty I’m not a great proponent of compression socks in ski boots - at all. I just don’t get it. Reducing your arterial flow in cold to extreme conditions seems counterintuitive to me. Many studies have shown that wearing compression socks during recovery of running bouts improves performance the next day. After skiing, wearing them round the lodge for recovery and prevention of lactic acid build up, I get that, and I can see how they’d be helpful then. But wearing them in a ski boot – which already provides compression around your legs when they’re done up, far more so than a sock could ever do – seems like a waste of time. What do you think about compression ski socks? Have you tried them? • Krista Sturday @ Ortho Ski

CFE NEWS A Change of the Guard
O
ver the last week Falls Creek CFA Brigade has seen a change in leadership. A brigade election held earlier this year saw Captain Rock De Marchi stand down and new Captain Anthony Johnson (AJ) elected. The results of this election came into effect on the 1st of July. Wednesday two weeks backs was Rock’s last official training session as Captain and he took a few minutes to speak of his time as Captain, thanked the brigade for their support and wished AJ all the best for the future. While it is the end of an era and start of another, Rock will continue to serve the Falls Creek community as a valued member of the Falls Creek CFA brigade. Rock see’s CFA as his opportunity to serve his community. He is a great example of the significant contribution volunteers make, that we simply couldn’t do with-out. In 2003, bushfires threatened the Falls Creek Village. Rock was not only Captain of the brigade at this time, but the person the Falls Creek community looked to for direction and information. Rock advised residents to evacuate early and kept those who stayed informed and prepared for what was to come. Under Rock's steady leadership, Strike-teams of firefighters were deployed to Falls Creek to protect the Village. Well-known local identity, Barry Jones of Pretty Valley Lodge remembers the time well and will always be grateful for Rock's leadership, local knowledge and practical guidance of how to defend his
property. Barry recalls Rock advising him to: cover any exposed skin with clothing made of natural fibre: to strategically place mops and metal bins full of water around his property to douse spot fires. Rock fondly recalls this time, as the community proved resilient; banding together, sharing meals and resources, amidst the challenge of a bushfire threatening their homes and livelihoods. Thanks to Rock, the community was prepared and fortunately the Village was spared by the bushfire. Having held the role of 1st Lieutenant for several years, AJ is by no means a new-comer to Falls Creek, the CFA or leadership. AJ, currently a snow maker, is a Carpenter by trade who has worked and lived at Falls Creek for many years. Testament to his commitment to the Falls Creek community, AJ, is also a member of the Falls Creek SES unit. AJ, together with the Brigade Management Team will lead the Falls Creek Brigade in its mission to continually improve its ability to meet the unique risks of the Falls Creek community. Congratulations AJ, we wish you all the best for your term as Captain! • Mark Steven, Falls Creek Winter Commander. Em: m.steven@cfa.vic.gov.au

ACTIVITIES THIS WEEK Yuki Threads Birds Sessions Hey Ladies, the sessions are back on the road for another year, and they want you to come ride with them. The aim of Yuki Birds events is to bring women together through snowboarding and skiing. They aim to help break down the intimidation barriers around entering, riding and progressing in the park and around the mountain. They want to bring you a day full of ‘high fives,’ new friendships, fresh tricks and a love for the snow. Meet up with the crew in the morning before lapping the park or cruising the resort with your new mates in small groups, each with one or two of our expert Yuki team leaders. A professional photographer will be there to capture the day and provide some top-notch content. Top it all off with the après session, including a special Yuki Birds cocktail.

Falls Creek Guides
You are welcomed to come along and join in the weekly activities for kids and for adults alike. There will be fire pits, marshmallows, games and music – it is also the best place to get all the info on what is on this week at Falls Creek.
Mark ‘Macca’ McDonald has been around the industry for a couple of years now with several as a top instructor with the Falls Creek Snowsports School. He has also operated as the director of a snowsports school in Japan for many of our summers. And, it would probably be fair to say that he can ski ‘anything!’
Pete the Snowdragon will make an appearance from 4:30 to 5:00pm. Pete loves Twilight Tuesdays and is always up for a boogie and a selfie with the kids! •
‘Macca’ also dabbles in some pretty good art, and has created a couple of characters ‘Harry and Milli’ who offer little tit-bits on the industry and the area.

ACTIVITIES THIS WEEK Night Skiing Wombat's Ramble lights up on Wednesday and Saturday nights, from 6pm - 9pm, allowing you to continue your ski and snowboard adventures while the rest of the mountain relaxes. As Australia’s longest green run, Wombat's Ramble is a favourite of many skiers and snowboarders. The entire length has been carefully lined with high voltage Green Power floodlights, and lights up from the top of Halley’s Comet at Cloud 9, all the way downhill to QT in Slalom Plaza. Every night, our dedicated slope maintenance team will maintain snow conditions to provide a skiing and snowboarding playground suited for beginners through to the more advanced that want to experience the thrill of night-time riding. •
Fireworks Fiesta Thursday nights are coming alive this winter, with the Fireworks Fiesta. Grab the kids, or a mate, and cap off your day by watching a magical fireworks show under the stars brought to you by BMW. See the show from the comfort of your accommodation, or get up close to the action and head to the Village Bowl near the Frying Pan Inn each Thursday night at 7pm. •
Snowmobile Tours The opportunity to ride you own snowmobile does not come along that often. To be able to get out and explore the magnificence of the Bogong High Plains covered in a mantle of pristine snow is an experience you will carry with you for a lifetime.
MOTORING TIPS
As soon as we get a decent cover of snow and the team can get you out across the high plains on a safe and firm snow-pack, then that’s the time to jump onto their website and make a booking. You can either ride your own machine (you must have a valid, current drivers licence) or you can go out as the Pillion Passenger, on the back with a competent guide. The snow, the scenery, the fresh air – you definitely ain’t gonna get in Collins Street. Go to www.fallscreeksnowmobiletours.com. au for further details. •
Ski Fit Yoga None of that just sitting around in your accommodation – or worse – wasting time and money in a bar! Get yourself motivated and take advantage of the Ski Fit Yoga classes being put on by the beautiful Julia and Janine. These classes are designed for all levels and will help get you motivated for better health, fitness and enjoyment of life in general. 5:45pm on Tuesdays in the QT Boardroom. Bookings are essential, Ph 0402 212 607 and whilst they’re free, a donation to charity is requested. Just do it! •
New Gallery Charlie Brown has been in the ski industry for quite some time, about 40 years, give or take a few and he’s managed to eke out a pretty successful career as a ski resort, snow sports and action photographer as well as capturing beautiful landscapes. He’s worked at the three main Victorian resorts, as well as Europe, Canada and NZ.
Preparing For Winter
But now Charlie has finally settled down. He's been living full time in Mount Beauty for 10 years and has opened a Gallery/ cafe for the winter in a decked out 40’ container, displaying his work and I’m told, pumping out some very credible coffee, It’s in the carpark of Kiewa Valley Snowsports in Tawonga South – on the right hand side as you come in to town – with plenty of parking. So if you’re on your way to Falls Creek and need a coffee to get you the last 30kms or looking for some art for your wall, drop in and say hi! It’s worth the visit. •
Fat Biking Fat Biking trails are now open at Falls Creek. Fat Biking is the newest trend in both mountain biking and snowsports, combining the two with a specialised bike that is perfect for riding on snowy trails. On a fat bike you can ride the entire network of groomed cross country ski trails. Fat Bikes are currently not rented at Falls Creek, and need to be brought up the mountain. Bikes are able to only ride on groomed tracks when the temperature is a below 0°C. To ride on the cross country trails riders MUST give way to all skiers and ride in the middle of the trail only. Please note Fat Bikes are not permitted to be ridden within the village. Details: Groomed Trails Only! Temperature below 0°C! Give Way to all cross country ski traffic! No riding on set tracks! Wheels must be greater than 3.75cm! Trails are free to access! Further details at: info@fallscreek.com.au, or ph: 03 5758 1202. •
Falls Creek
Travelling to Falls Creek this winter? • Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick. • Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades. • Check the condition of your tyres – or even consider getting winter tyres- more grip in slippery conditions. • Make sure your tire pressure is exactly what it should be. • Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly! • Check the amount of coolant/anti-freeze in your radiator. Our Service Centres have a Glycometer which will measure how cold your radiator fluid can get before freezing. • Carry a few emergency supplies, like a blanket, warm gloves, ice scraper, shovel – in case you get stuck out on the road.

WHERE DOES OUR MONEY GO! The Op Shop
T
he Mount Beauty Hospital and Kiewa Valley House Nursing Home Op Shop (not a bad title for an Op Shop) raises money for our health campus as a result of many people making donations and even more people finding a bargain and supporting the Op Shop. The donations have been gratefully received – but, we do have limited space and sometimes we get to the point where we cannot take any more. But bear with us – as we try to move items out (read sell) and make space for more donations. Recently, we here at the Op Shop have spent well over $100,000 as the result of requests from our local health campus. To keep the community informed, here is a list of the items that have recently been purchased. • • • • •
Diathermy machine, with exhaust. Computer to accompany X-ray machine. Two low-line beds for the nursing home. Two commode chairs for the nursing home. A tilt-up wheelchair for nursing home.
Another little service that the Op Shop team provide is to top up the lollie/ chocolate jar in the hairdressing salon, as the salon is an excellent facility in our health campus for residents of Kiewa Valley House and patients in our hospital.

Suitable donated food items are either distributed directly, or passed to Anglicare for them to distribute as appropriate. We also share items with the Uniting Church Op Shop, as they do with us, as they have been a big part of our local community for many years. The bulk of valued volunteers are ladies, many being retired nurses (who understand the valuable work the Op Shop is doing) – but, as mature ladies, they cannot be expected to be handling heavy items. Purchased goods may be delivered locally for a fee, but we ask that heavier items are picked up or dropped off. Now, the Op Shop is looking for more volunteers – and all that is asked is about four hours a month – or if you’re a bit more dedicated, four hours a fortnight to enjoy the companionship of working with friends – or – bring your husband! Our roster is a self-roster system, put your name down in the next month if available, and closer to the time, we have a look at the

FALL LINES Litter
I
n 40 years of driving up and down the Bogong High Plains Road from Mount Beauty to Falls Creek, never before have I seen the disgusting amount of litter that has just been tossed out of vehicles - usually when they are stationary – dealing with sick passengers or whatever. Almost every pullover spot in the 30km distance has litter of some form or other. Soft drink cans, water bottles, tissues, soiled nappies, coffee cups and fast food packaging – it’s all there – just chucked out – like the people doing it have no selfrespect or respect for the environment and this beautiful countryside. For goodness sake, it’s a national park – a very important national park and one that all of our community are very proud of.

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Cedarwood Apartment Nine
it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village.
ocated in the Cedarwood complex, Apartment Nine is a desirable one bedroom apartment that comfortably accommodates six people. It is complemented by a large living and dining area with fully a fully equipped kitchen measuring in total approximately 73.88 square metres.
Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with more trails planned and some being accessed from very close to Cedarwood. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot, on a horse or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria.
L
The bedroom features a split king bed with en suite and wardrobe space with ample room for a comfortable stay. Outside the bedroom there is a split queen bed with lots of natural lighting with an additional 2 trundle beds under the queen. Featuring windows that stretch across the width of the apartment, guests are treated to beautiful views of the surrounding alpine environment. The apartment features a private balcony with a BBQ perfect for entertaining. The Cedarwood complex has onsite management and a long head lease until 2054. The management agreement does not restrict any owner use. However, if you do rent, you must do so via the onsite management. While the quality of your enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted,
The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes the Alpine Challenge, the Mile High Dragon Boats, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the Easter Festival as well as regular mountain bike shuttles. And to quote our CEO from an article in a previous edition “Falls Creek has the highest total visitor days of any Alpine Resort in Victoria.” This property, at $295,000 it is definitely worth an inspection. Please contact Christa Smit (Zirknitzer) at Zirky Real Estate on Mb: 0402 277 808. www.zirkyrealestate. com.au. •
This property is perfect for those wanting to own their own alpine getaway to use for themselves or as an investment property sold fully furnished. Previous rental history is available on request.

Local Defibrillators
O
n page 13 of this publication is a list of the Community Defibrillators available in Mount Beauty, Tawonga South and Tawonga – either freely accessible, or located inside a premises. This paper is trying to compile a list of the defibrillators available around the village. At this stage, we know that there are defibrillators located at:
000
Inside the entrance to the Resort Management Office, beside the Slalom Street Day Shelter – accessible 24 hours a day.
This paper is keen to establish the more precise locations, and also whether each defibrillator is accessible 24 hours a day. If anyone can help with this information, it is as simple as sending me an Email to kencbell@bigpond.net.au with all of the details you can provide. Thanks everyone in advance. •
There is also one at the Village Bowl Playground and Pizza Oven shelter beside the public toilets - accessible 24 hours a day. There is also a defibrillator at the ATS building, and another at Wagga Ski Club.
