MITTA TO MOUNT BEAUTY Pub to Pub

T

he longest continually running mountain bike event in Australia just celebrated its 27th running on Sunday 28th October. Throughout the event’s history, there have been a few adaptations and changes – and the ever increasing number of mountain bike events being staged around the country also means that numbers have varied. From memory, the largest number of entrants was over 300 in the mid 90’s. This year’s event varied the course slightly – with the controlled start moving out of the public park beside The Laurel in Mitta Mitta. Then, approaching Mount Beauty the course was changed to take out the climb up Mountain Creek road and ‘Chookies’ hill – and re-routing the riders around the gnarly part of Freda’s Lane, along the horse tracks besides Damms Road and across a beautifully constructed scaffolding bridge over the East Kiewa (beside the road bridge). The final stage was the flat-out pedal along Lakeside Avenue and sprint around the corner at the roundabout into the grounds of West Peak Hotel – to be greeted by an enthusiastic group of friends and supporters. Another recent innovation has been the introduction of the 30km Short Course for Juniors – starting at Scrubby Creek Cattle Grid and this year we had four girls and 19 guys start from there. Among the girls it was Taylah Power 1st in 2:12:51; Stacey Gill 2nd in 2:22:15 and Claire Bowring 3rd in 2:37:17. Placegetters in the young blokes section were: Ty Bowey 1st in 1:40:55; Cohen Jessen 2nd in 1:45:07 and Harry Doye 3rd in 1:48:32. This year’s Mitta also attracted more ‘serious’ riders as it was added in to the Falls Creek Victorian Mountain Bike Series, becoming Round Four of the series. Neil

FALL LINES Mount Beauty Pool The opening of the Mount Beauty Pool has been delayed until mid-December, due to a delay in the arrival of pool tiles. The facility has been undergoing an overhaul, including a renewal of the pool concourse, retiling of the main, intermediate and toddler pools, and installation of a toddler water play area.

frustration that this delay will cause,” Mr Bird said. “It’s disappointing, but on the positive side, the community will be able to enjoy a renewed, attractive space, with the addition of a new toddler water play area.” Council will communicate an opening date as soon as possible. •

Well Done

Alpine Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Charlie Bird said the toddler play area is complete, but a delay in the arrival of pool tiles has left the project incomplete in time for the usual pool opening.

This year, Mount Beauty local, Rick Cappellari is celebrating 25 years of Mount Beauty Service Centre.

“We’re disappointed that the contractor has removed the existing pool tiles before the arrival of the new tiling, leaving us without a functional facility,” he said. “We will have to delay the pool opening until mid-December, which we understand has implications for all pool users – including local schools, lap swimmers, swimming clubs and casual users. “We apologise unreservedly for this, and are working with all stakeholders to arrive at the best possible solution while works are completed.” Council will offer half-price early bird season tickets for the Mount Beauty Pool in the lead up to its reopening. Availability will be communicated closer to a definite opening date. “We know how passionate our communities are about their pools, and we share the

Rick moved to Mount Beauty from Markwood after marrying Leanne Cappellari (nee Barbour), the daughter of former SEC worker Andy and Dianne Barbour. In 1993, Rick and Leigh brought the mechanical side of the business from his cousin Ross Gigliotti who owned the Mount Beauty Mobil Service Station. The mechanics workshop added a new component to the already established petrol side of the business. Rick operated Mount Beauty Service Centre from the premises at the roundabout until 2003 when the business had outgrown the small space so the move was made just down the road to the old SEC workshops where the complex is shared by North East Home Improvements, North East Country Wholesale Foods, Ariel’s Laundrette and the local This Week paper. schooling in Wangaratta and completed his mechanics apprenticeship at Heffernan Ford, which is now known as Ovens Ford Wangaratta. He is the longest serving mechanic in Mount Beauty with many loyal customers who make his job enjoyable. Over this time, he has also opened his workshop to a number of apprentices and many school based students to complete work experience. Other than running Mount Beauty Service Centre, Rick has been a member of the Mount Beauty CFA since the early 90’s and was involved in the Mount Beauty Speedway Club up until 2015, including being president for about eight years. Last Saturday, November 3rd, Rick invited many of his customers, friends and family down to the workshop for an afternoon BBQ and a few cleansing ales to celebrate the occasion. And a good day was had by all. •

KIEWA VALLEY PROPERTY New Agent in Town

M

egan and Josh New travelled in to the big smoke (we call Albury Wodonga) recently with part of their plane being to potentially look for some property. Their trip took them to the Elders Wodonga office and while discussing property in the Upper Kiewa Valley, it wasn’t long before the conversation had turned to the need for an Elders Agent in the area. Megan had been one of the smiling faces with the Commonwealth Bank for about 18 months, but left the bank to care for returned serviceman husband Josh who has had several tours to Afghanistan to his credit. The couple also have two children to look after. Kayden is 10 years old and Alyssa is seven. As well as this Megan took on some parttime work with Jodi Mann at Wonderland Emporium in Tawonga South.

The trip to Wodonga identified that Elders needed a representative in the Upper Kiewa Valley – and it sounded like something Megan would like to do – but which also meant studying. Studying and advancing knowledge to improve one’s skills was not a problem – just finding the time to do the study on-line at home was the challenge. But Megan was able to achieve it – doing the study into the latter part of the evening – after the kids were in bed. The good part about this work is that Megan can work from home – and still continue to take care of the family. Her hours are dictated by the needs of the clients. As a Sales Executive for Elders Real Estate (who hold the licence), Megan is qualified sell properties, to deal with clients, do market appraisals, generally list properties for sale and take property photos. Josh’s experience as a photographer will also come in handy. At this stage she is keen to list and potentially put properties up for sale.

If you would like Megan to have a look at your property, or to simply toss around some ideas, please give her a call on Mb: 0403 456 431, or Em: megan.new@ eldersrealestate.com.au. •
