Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

CHRISTMAS GIVING Not Taking

A

s a community, we seem to put a lot of pressure on ourselves and others at Christmas – and most of it is totally unnecessary. We can only ever be at one place at one time – and once the decision is made to spend your time at Christmas with your family, your friends, your dearly beloved – or just a bunch of mates – get on with it. It is fairly well understood that Christmas is about giving. It is definitely not about ‘taking!’ And if that means giving your loved ones, family or friends a little bit of space at Christmas – so be it. Making demands on people is not going to improve any given situation.

Local hirer of steel KWIKSTAGE SCAFFOLD Domestic & commercial use. Our professional team is fully licensed and offers a competitive rate for hire, transport, erect and dismantle of local scaffolding jobs.

Enjoy the time. Enjoy the peace. Enjoy your family and your friends – and remember – without these family members and friends – you would not amount to much at all! The obvious respect that is shown to one another in this community is a credit to the people in the community. Oh sure, we all have minor differences, but we get over these little indiscretions – and very quickly get back to what is important – looking after each other. One way of supporting each other in this community is to support those that support us. Shop locally – not in Bunnings or Aldi – those businesses that do nothing for this community. There are so many choices in this community, it is surprising that folk decide to travel out of town to shop. Here are some suggestions: Portrait Photos. Gift Certificates for a photography session are an easy and meaningful gift idea. We can book in your session when you are ready after Christmas and it will give the receiver the chance to decide how they would like their photos to look. Or you may like to book in a family

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT With Minor Changes

C

arols by Candlelight is an institution in this country (see below) and in this town. Organised by the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club, our Carols involves a greater part of the community. The Mount Beauty and District Community Band; the Mount Beauty Singers, talented youngsters from the schools and many volunteers doing the work behind the scenes. Norman Banks, a 3KZ radio announcer was walking home from his night-time radio shift on Christmas Eve in 1937, when he passed a window and saw an elderly woman inside sitting up in bed, listening to ‘Away in a Manger’ being played on the radio and singing along, with her face being lit by candlelight. Wondering how many others spent Christmas alone, he had the idea to invite people to a group event and sing Christmas carols together by candlelight. Carols by Candlelight was held in Alexandra Gardens from 1938 to 1958 and then moved to the newly constructed Sidney Myer Music Bowl in 1959. It would be a pretty certain bet that not one adult out there does not remember fondly the times your parents took you to Carols by Candlelight. Whether it was in the King George Gardens in Wangaratta, in the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Kings Domain, or outside the Community Centre

A presentation from the little ones is just another fabulous element of our Carols. Pic – Ken Bell

in Mount Beauty, it doesn’t matter. Carols by Candlelight has special significance. Not only did you get to play with a live, yes a real live burning candle dripping down your shirt; but it meant that Santa was coming and Christmas morning was getting closer and closer. The very simple act of getting together without too much formality, relaxing as a community of families and singing some traditional Christmas Carols has a lot of merit – and it promotes a family atmosphere so beneficial for the kids – and the oldies. We will learn all too early in life that fairy tales aren’t real – but for a few short years let the kids be kids. One change this year is that Carols will be held on Friday 14th December. The venue will be the Mount Beauty Secondary College, outside the Jessie Hollonds Studio Building – with the overflow spreading on to the Les Peart Oval.

The evening will kick off from 6pm with a BBQ and soft drinks. The Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre will also be open for tea, coffee and snacks. The Carols will kick off at 8pm and will be followed by a visit from Santa Claus. Santa will give out bags of lollies for all the children under 12 years of age. Everyone is encouraged to bring your own blankets, rugs and chairs. After Santa Claus arrives at approximately 9:15, and once lollies have been given to all the children, there will be an extended Carols by Candlelight community singalong. And to help with your singing, why not attend the Bright Singers Concert in the Community Centre at 4pm this Sunday the 9th. Great singing and caroling and an enjoyable afternoon. SAFER DRIVERS Better Future

“I train drivers of all ages, experiences and abilities,” Craig says.

ore than 350 young drivers aged around 18 to 25 have lost their lives in Victoria in the last 10 years – representing one in four or 25% of the drivers who have lost their lives in motor accidents in Victoria in the last decade.

“I’ve had lessons with students up to the age of 50, and taken one person on their first ever drive - they’d never, ever been in a car before, even as a passenger before arriving in Australia,” Craig says.

M

This is why professional driving lessons are a must when it comes to getting behind the wheel and practising for your driver’s licence. As an experienced driver of over 30 years, Craig Vine from Summit Driver Training understands the importance of being a confident driver and staying safe on the road. A local to the Tawonga and Mount Beauty area, he has been teaching drivers of all ages over the past two years. To date, he has helped around 60 students graduate from their learner’s permit to their probationary licence, and has trained many more. Craig takes driving lessons in the Mount Beauty and Bright areas in his dual control Toyota Corollas, with both manual and auto options available. Lessons start out with local driving sessions to get a hang of conditions on quieter country roads, before taking lessons into Wodonga to experience busier, urban roads and to prepare for the driving tests. This is all working through the four stages of the VicRoads Graduated licensing system, and Craig can also accompany students during their driving tests to help ease any nerves.

Craig recommends learners obtaining driving lessons as soon as possible, although some supervising drivers prefer to wait until the students have had some hours of experience. Either way, he can work through the stages of learning as required and work through the finer skills of driving. He also encourages supervising drivers to tag along for lessons at least once, so everyone’s on the same page and they might even learn something too! “There are so many finer things you have to get right to pass your test - even the world’s most experienced driver might not get their position on the road right, lane changing, roundabouts and checking their blind spots,” Craig says. “If most licensed drivers sat their driving test now, they probably wouldn’t pass. It’s not that they’re unsafe drivers - it’s just the little things they wouldn’t get right.” With a background in operating large plant equipment, Craig is also currently expanding his qualifications, having recently completed his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and within the next 12 months will offer training
