MY SAY Enjoy the weekend

N

o-one would argue that the last 18 to 20 months in this area have been particularly stressful, firstly with bushfires, then with the introduction of COVID-19 and the major lockdowns. We got through the fires, enjoyed a small window of reprieve in February March – enjoyed a successful Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek and began planning for a great winter, Then boom!!! COVID-19 and from Edition Four of Winter the state was locked down. Last summer we seemed to open up a bit and as winter this year approached, the bookings were looking brilliant – and again – boom! More freaking lock-downs – more stress, less certainty – and a creeping underlying animosity (which is not good for the soul!). And while our focus here is on this area, we must recognise that the fires devastated many more of our friends’ towns and communities and left people in a much worse state than we in this valley have had to face. And everyone is suffering the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

will again: “Lord, give me the strength to change the things I can, the grace to accept the things I cannot, and the wisdom to know the difference” One of the attitudes that is rearing its ugly head is peoples’ desire to blame someone or something else – an extension of the feeling that we didn’t do anything wrong, therefore we are not at fault. But, that is only part of the story. While we here did not create the pandemic, we cannot ignore the fact that it is here and to accept our responsibility to deal with this pandemic in an appropriate manner. The very meaning of the word “(of a disease) prevalent over a whole country or the world” indicates that everyone can be affected – and it is therefore incumbent upon everyone to accept the responsibility that dealing with the pandemic brings. Now, what can we do? Firstly, accept the fact that this COVID-19 pandemic is real. Accept the fact that everyone can be impacted. Accept the fact that it can be fatal. And accept the fact that 99.9% medical practitioners and scientists are wonderful intelligent people who, in the main, would only ever want the best for Round One of the GE National Series humanity.

officials – and while they are bringing us the good news or the bad news, this pandemic is not their fault. And while our pollies are introducing measures that may or may not impact on our way of life – you can bet your bottom dollar they are not doing it to win votes. They are doing it with the express view of trying to protect every member of the community – not their own jobs.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2021 Edition ONE

VALLEY N PEAKS Welcome to town

H

aving family members (like parents) who were founding members of BSM Ski Club, up the Eastern end of Parallel Street, Falls Creek is a pretty good indicator that skiing and snowsports were going to be in the blood. Back in 2009 when Pierre Azemat and partner Cat Lu enjoyed a skiing holiday at BSM the comments were a bit like, “What a beautiful area this would be to retire to and still lead an active life-style. And so it came to pass. Pierre purchased what was then the Mount Beauty Post Office and has turned it into Alpine Outfitters and Post – stocking a fine range of outdoor gear. But this article is about Cat, who last year purchased the business previously known as High Country Designs at 18 Hollonds Street. One of the wonderful aspects of this purchase was that many of the other retail businesses in the town posted great facebook comments welcoming Cat to town and wishing her all the best in the new business – as did many of the local shoppers – adding that this new business in town would further boost the diversity of choice and improve the shop local aspect.

complement the other stores in town. The shop and the product range fit with Cat’s desire to look after shoppers and to also live a semi-retired lifestyle in a wonderful area. Another little secret, Cat is going to add swimwear to her collection this summer.

As Cat said: “I want to dress girls and ladies from eight years to eighty years with comfortable fashion and attractive active wear!” Add to this a range of soft furnishing, home wares and a comprehensive selection of giftware and what you will find is a shop providing a delightful range of products that

Now trading as Valley N Peaks, Cat’s regular hours are: Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm. This Melbourne Cup weekend, Cat will be opening Saturday 10am to 4pm, Sunday10:30am to 2:30pm and Monday10am to 4pm. Cat’s contact is Email: catherine@valleynpeaks.com.au;

her Facebook page is: "Valleynpeaks" and the address is: 18 Hollonds Street, Mount Beauty. Now as we move into the lead up to Christmas, the new Valley N Peaks is another wonderful store to visit and plan our Christmas shopping. •

note from the Mount Beauty Uniting Church Op Shop. We all know it has been a topsy-turvy year with regulations changing and lockdowns happening. I guess we have become used to not planning ahead too much. The MtBUC Op Shop has been open and closed depending on the regulations but one thing has not changed. Did you know that a percentage of the money raised by this op shop is available for the community? Sincere Thanks A message was left on my phone recently from a couple from Baddaginnie who were staying the ‘The Park’ for the first time. It was quite a complimentary message and I subsequently texted and thanked the gentleman concerned. And, as it is nice and greatly appreciated to receive the occasional thanks, I have therefore hereby printed the reply this couple sent. “Hi Ken, very worthy of a comment/ compliment As tourists, Brenda & I enjoyed reading your informative newsletter. We called on numerous places of interest, & shopped where advertisements tempted us to visit (& spend up) We met new friends, enjoyed lovely tucker, & have already decided to re visit Steve, Chris, Alex and Dwayne @ the scenic caravan park. Those among us with a good memory will be aware of the thousands of hours that have gone in to creating and maintaining all of our great trails. This not only covers

the Team Mount Beauty crew who have done a magnificent job with the trails on Mt Beauty, but also other groups and many individuals who have done exceptional work all around the area. For example, the Landcare group and their many members have done great work cleaning up Vales Road Creek, the picnic and swimming hole area down the end of Rock Pool Road and recently, the new planting along the extension of the Pebble Beach Track. One individual who (while he doesn’t seek it) does not get enough recognition is Jim Crebbin. Jim, with the help, support and assistance of many other members of the community has had a major hand in the creation of the Fainter Falls Track; new bridges on the Survey Track; the opening up of the first part of the Gorge Track, then the installation of the swing bridge across the West Kiewa, and the continued opening up of the Gorge Track right up to the Gorge and the crystal clear swimming holes. Jim was also instrumental in the cleaning up and sealing of the Pebble Beach Track and then the extension North towards the Junction of the East and West Kiewa Rivers. (Plans are afoot to continue the track upstream along the East Kiewa to Damms Road, making a nice walking and cycling loop. Recently, members of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, driven a very good gardener, President Maria Pantling and a very keen secretary, Jane Zagorski, planted more trees along the extended path. This is Maria’s report. What a wonderful and productive day we had on Sunday, 17th October! The Rotary Club of Mount Beauty held a successful

tree planting along the Kiewa River Trail - the extension of the Pebble Beach track. Twelve Rotarians were ably assisted by visiting Rotarian Liz Pascoe, Karen Cook and Owen Stickles. Even Goldie and Clover Spencer, Jane and Mark Zagorski’s grandchildren, joined in with great enthusiasm. It was a perfect day with the sun shining brightly and great to see everyone in gardening gear and gumboots. We planted twelve unusual and interesting deciduous trees that will add beauty to the walk with their spring flowers, autumn colours and summer shade. We received invaluable assistance from Lincoln Budge who collected nine of our trees from Beechworth in a horse float, Heath Matheson who dug the holes with his new auger and Ben Truran who generously donated as much mulch as we needed.

Jan and Joe Mullaly, members of the Rotary club, made a generous financial contribution to the project and the Alpine Shire assisted with a water tank on a trailer, enough stakes for twelve tall trees and some financial assistance. The Environment is the seventh area of Focus for Rotary (after humanitarian and peace goals) so we were particularly pleased to contribute to our local environment. President Maria said “Huge thanks to this wonderful group of volunteers for rolling up their sleeves and just getting the job done! It’s a great achievement and we know that the walkers on this popular track will enjoy watching the trees grow and seeing the seasons reflected in their changing beauty.”

MOUNT BEAUTY AIRPORT Upgrade Report

Project Overview

he Mount Beauty Airport Upgrade project will effectively future-proof access for emergency services, improving the safety of surrounding communities and boosting access by air to the Kiewa Valley.

These upgrades will support the essential firefighting efforts and allow for improved access for Air Ambulance Victoria fixedwing aircraft.

T

In 2013, when the Hotham fires were burning flat out, your Ed spoke to a couple of Air Tractors pilots flying out of Mount Beauty. The Turbo-prop Air Tractors would normally carry around 3000 litres of water/retardant. Because of the limited length of our runway, only 2500 litres was loaded in to either aircraft – and a 500 litre Emergency Drop was dialled in, just in case they were not going to clear the end fence. Therefore, the extension and work at the airfield is vital.

Project Update

The shire’s contractors are working closely with North East Catchment Management Authority to compile and analyse the flood impact assessment.

The closure and transfer of the unused Government road currently bisecting the airport land is also underway.

With the runway extension pushing into the east branch floodplain, the impact of the construction on future extreme flood events will be carefully considered.

Construction is expected to begin later this year, with runway completion anticipated by the end of April 2022. •

A contract for the detailed design of the Mount Beauty Airport Upgrade has been awarded, bringing the project one step closer to taking flight. The contractors are currently working through the challenges to overcome and

satisfy conflicting design objectives for both the aviation and floodplain management requirements.

Several options are being explored to reduce the earthwork required to construct the runway extension.

WHAT'S ON IN 2021

OUR COMMUNITY Spring Clean Brought to you by Lee and Caroline at Gather & Harvest on Hollonds St

Home office - Now that many of us are working from home, it’s time to think about how to be more eco-friendly in our home office. Some tips include:

Spring is a great time to do a big clean up and get your house sorted after being snuggled inside during winters, but remember to be a responsible cleaner and dispose of your goods appropriately.

• Turn the power off when not using electrical items

When decluttering, a good rule of thumb to remember is if you have used it in the last year, chances are you’ll use it again. Clothing and household goods in good condition can be donated to the Op Shop. Small household batteries can be recycled through Mount Beauty Hardware & Drapery. Broken electrical goods must be taken to the Mount Beauty Transfer Station & Recycling Centre, not thrown in the bins. If changing light globes, please take the compact fluorescent lights and other household fluorescent globes to the Transfers Stations, don’t dispose of them in the regular bins. Compact fluorescent lights contain a small amount of mercury, which should be kept out of landfill. •

• If you do need to change your printer cartridge it can be recycled through the local libraries.

• Be a paper ninja and go paper free. If you do need to print, print on recycled paper and both sides.

• Adopt the 5 R’s - refuse, re-use, reduce, repurpose & recycle. •

Health & Fitness Brought to you by Emily and Lee at Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage To achieve your strength and fitness goals, there are a few ways to motivate yourself, and stay on track. 1. Have a clear vision of your goal and why you want to achieve it. This will keep you encouraged when you have days that aren't as energised or motivating. 2. Don't overcomplicate getting started - the main thing is you start in some way, and continue your commitment. Consistency is key in the long term! 3. Preparation promotes an easier ability to stay focused on fitness goals and achievements, whether it be planning and preparing nutritionally wholesome meals for the week to support your activity levels, body and recovery, or scheduling in your exercise or training sessions each day amongst other activities. 4. Celebrate all achievements along the way towards your goal - no matter how small. These will create a ripple effect towards your overall goal!

HOME DELIVERY NOW AVAILABLE!

5. Enjoy the exercise you choose to do. Get your body moving daily to reap the amazing health benefits of exercise! •
