A Regular Treat
The Alpine Blue Light Pool Party has been something of a treat for many of the kids in the valley –and those visiting – over many years. It stands out like the nose on your face that the last couple of years have been less than ordinary. The good part is that we have some dedicated coppers in this community who are prepared to spend some of their personal time involving themselves with the community and with the kids – supported by family members and community volunteers.
This summer, the Blue Light committee are planning three Pool Parties with the first of these being this coming Sunday the 14th. The next Pool Party will be on Sunday 12th February.
The party will start at 3:30p, and run through until 6pm. Everyone is welcome –families and all. Family entry is $20 and a single entry is $10.
Activities on the day will include fantastic door prizes, and for those a little hungry, there will be a gold coin donation BBQ. The big feature of course will be the huge blow-up water obstacle and slide which keeps the kids entertained for hours. In fact, it would be a good bet to say that those kids who spend time on the slide will sleep pretty well that night.
The next Alpine Blue Light Pool Party will be Sunday 12th Feb, 3:30pm to 6pm. Further enquiries to 03 5754 3531.
The Mount Beauty Swimming Pool also offers Lap Swimming (to help your fitness) Aqua Aerobics (also for your fitness) and supports a very good swimming club. If you would like ot know more, call in to the pool and have a chat with the team. •
VICTORIAN MTB CHAMPIONSHIP
The XCO
This weekend is round five and six of the Falls Creek Victorian Mountain Bike Championship Series! Running over this weekend, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th January, this event is hosted at Mount Beauty Big Hill MTB Park with support from Falls Creek Alpine Resort and Mount Beauty MTB Club. Make sure to come down this week to see XCO racing at its best!
The format of XCO or Cross country Olympic Format is one of the most common disciplines of mountain biking. Cross country MTB became an Olympic sport in 1996 and is the only form of mountain biking practiced at the Olympics. The rules for cross country mountain biking for the Olympics are actually pretty simple. The race has a mass start, with all of the riders starting at the same time, and the riders then have to finish a set amount of laps around a course between 4km and 6km in length. The number of laps to be completed is dependant on the category entered.
The Series & How it Works:
There are nine rounds in this series and your best five results will be counted towards your series result. Meaning if you miss a race or have a mechanical problem you still have a chance.
Categories:
• Elite Men & Women
• Under 30 Men & Women (18-29)
• Masters 1/2 Men & Women (30-39)
• Masters 3/4 Men & Women (40-49)
• Master 5/6 Men & Women (50-59)
• Masters 7 Men & Women (60+)
• U19 Men & Women
• U17 Men & Women
• U15 Men & Women
• U13 Men & Wome
• E Bike Open Men & Women
• E Bike Recreational
Last year’s event saw some fantastic racing – and this year should be even better. Pic – Courtesy Vic XCO MTB Championships
The current standard XCO format uses a course between 4km and 6km in length. Depending on the category entered there will be a certain number of laps to be completed to create a race time within a given range
Age Calculation for categories:
Based on the UCI Rules for the National MTB Championships: The date on which the age of a rider is calculated is December 31 of the year the National Championships occurs during or concluding the series in which an event takes place. For the 2022 –2023 Victorian MTB championship Series this is December 31, 2023
Insurance:
Insurance conditions for events may be different depending on who is the host club / company of that round.
It is advised for all riders to hold a valid Aus Cycling Off Road membership as a minimum. For most club events if a rider does not hold this membership they will need to purchase an Aus Cycling Event
permit for the day at a cost of $30. There is a multi day option for $50.
Please note the club cannot sell this to you and you can only apply on the actual day of competition.
The Points System:
1st – 80, 2nd 65, 3rd 55, 4th 48, 5th 43, 6th 38, 7th 33, 8th 29, 9th 25, 10th 22, 11th 20, 12th 19, 13th 18, 14th 17, 15th 16 and 16th to last all get 15 points each. Did not finish (DNF) will get 15 points. Did not start (DNS) will get zero points. The Championship round will be for double points. Racing starts each day at 9am, with a two minute delay between each class.
For Series prizes there is a $6000 Falls Creek Resort prize pool which will be distributed across all categories with even amounts paid to each category (30% less for junior categories). To be eligible for the series prize money you must compete in a minimum of 3 rounds. •
VICTORIAN DOWNHILL SERIES
Round Two
Hosted by Team Mount Beauty at the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park, Round Two of the series will see around 350 riders competing on our fabulous downhill course next weekend, the 21st and 22nd of January.
Among the entered Elite riders are several who are ranked in the top 20 in the World, with one entrant finishing 6th at the World Championships in France in August last year.
Briefly, the format of the event is:
SATURDAY: Practice, with shuttles running 9:30am to 4pm from the bus bay opposite the golf course up the West Kiewa Power Station Road to the top of Mount Beauty.
SUNDAY: Qualifications will be running to establish seeding for the start of racing later in the day. Shuttles will be running from 7:30am until all racers have been lifted to the start – about 3pm. Spectators welcome both days but racing starts at 11am Sunday!!
The Victorian Downhill Series rules are based on the Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) DHI rules for a Category 3 event. Visit https://vdhs.com.au/rules for more detail.
One of the factors that members of Team Mount Beauty (and this community) can be very proud of is the fact that the members have been dedicated and have all worked extremely hard over many years (since the early 90’s) to create a fantastic mountain bike venue and to host really successful events.
This summer is no different and the impact of the Falls Creek road closure has meant that two more events are being held in Mount Beauty – the previously mentioned Victorian XCO series and the All Ride MTB de Femme in March.

Mount Beauty Edition
Having made the tough decision to postpone MTB de femme, Falls Creek in March 2023, due to the current landslip on the Bogong High Plains Road, All Ride MTB has been working behind the scenes with all parties to try and host some form of the event for the benefit of the region.
We can therefore announce that MTB de femme, Mt Beauty Edition will be hosted at Big Hill Mountain Bike Park on Saturday, 18th & Sunday 19th March 2023.
We have made changes to the schedule and ticketing and are excited to showcase what Big Hill offers. It has a reputation as a ‘hand-cut’ old-school network that is hard to navigate but you don’t have to worry as the instructors and guides have got you covered.
Indi Boer. from Fastline Bikademy, and her team of qualified instructors will teach you fundamental skills on Saturday morning that we can test on the trails in the afternoon. They will be supported by local female riders who will share their park knowledge.
Sunday will include pilates, an optional jumps session, or a chilled guide ride to a local swimming hole.
Tickets are available for the weekend, Saturday and Sunday for $299 or Saturday only for $235.
Local food trucks will be on-site offering participants breakfast and lunch.
All Ride MTB Founder, Jo Prothero, says ‘We are happy to be able to provide a different form of MTB de femme in 2023 and support a region that has been doing it tough. The event welcomes beginners, intermediate and advanced riders to participate. But, rest assured the event will be back in Falls in 2024 so you can all ride the new trails!’
We would like to thank Falls Creek Alpine Resort, Team Mt Beauty and Alpine Shire Council for making it possible.
A Recap on Last Year
From the first MTB de Femme in 2016, the popularity has grown. It is therefore no surprise that just over 100 female mountain bike riders took to the trails at Falls Creek in March last year for the annual MTB de femme event, the first since 2019.
The forecast of 20+mm of rain eventuated (28mm from 9:30 to 2pm) and conditions were far from ideal but that didn’t dampen spirts. You couldn’t wipe the smile off the ladies faces. It almost added to the experience with participants comparing ‘dirt freckles’ and who’s shoes were ‘squelching the most!’
Participants took part in guided social rides, skills clinics, yoga classes, a bike maintenance workshop and a longer picnic
ride into the Alpine National Park with lunch at the historical Edmondson’s Hut, built in 1933 and located out towards Mt Nelse.
“The atmosphere was awesome despite the conditions,” said Jo Prothero from All Ride MTB, the event organiser. “To see so many women come together and support each other is so empowering. They encouraged one another and you could see their confidence on the bike grow and that’s what MTB de femme is all about. One participant told me she had the best day ever!” (…and that’s despite being soaked to the skin).

LOCAL HISTORY
Tom Mitchell - Ski Champion & Visionary
In the annals of the history of Falls Creek, there is one man who is often overlooked. He did not set up the first ski tows or lifts; he did not operate a commercial lodge; nor was he a ski instructor. Nevertheless Tom Mitchell played a significant role in the development of the village and is deserving of recognition for the role he played, if not as a ‘founding father’ but as a guiding ‘godfather.’
The Mitchell family were among the early settlers in the Upper Murray area and it was at the family property Towong Hill that Thomas Walter Mitchell was born in 1906. Tom Mitchell first learned to ski on a family holiday at Klosters in Switzerland when he was seven years old. It was fourteen years later while studying law at Cambridge University that he developed his passion for skiing.

In the 1930’s he was four time Australian champion in slalom, twice in downhill events and four times combined champion. On a number of occasions he captained the Australian team in inter-dominion competitions with New Zealand. He made a strong impression when he won the 1932 NZ national championships on Mt Ruapehu, “his high standard of skiing an inspiration to the local skiers, demonstrating techniques not previously seen on the mountain.” In 1937 Tom published Ski Heil, the first Australian handbook on skiing technique. The same year he was instrumental in establishing the Australian National Ski Federation. Tom Mitchell married in 1935 and taught his wife Elyne to ski. She, too, became a champion - winning the Canadian downhill championships in 1938. However it was as an author that she is most remembered, especially for her ‘Silver Brumby’ series for children set in the Snowy Mountains.

A Life to Remember
This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.
If you have any specific agenda items, please email http://joprothero@fallscreek.com.au. We look forward to seeing you all there. •
At the outbreak of World War II Mitchell joined the AIF. After the fall of Singapore he became a prisoner of war; one of the founding members of the ‘Changi Ski Club’. Interest in skiing had not diminished during
the war years; in fact membership of the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) had grown from 459 members in 1940 to 1,000 by 1945. Of this number 200 were serving in the armed forces.
A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. Friends are welcome to pass this invite on and it is understood that members of Lyn’s family will be in attendance. •
The November 1945 edition of the SCV’s magazine, Schuss, included an article about the Changi A.I.F. Ski Club of which “Capt T.W Mitchell, with his usual enthusiasm for all skiing affairs, was president.” At a meeting of the club on 5th February, 1943, the subject was about “increasing and improving accommodation and conditions

in the snow areas of Australia.” Mitchell led the discussion proposing the development of alpine villages, suggesting that ski clubs should adopt one particular resort and spend their energy in developing that particular resort.”
After the war Mitchell returned to the family property near Corryong, becoming a member of the Victorian Parliament in 1947. His passion for skiing had not waned, nor had his vision for the development of alpine villages. In her memoirs, Skippy St Elmo writes about Mitchell’s visits to Falls Creek and the discussions held about the potential for the area to develop as a ski resort. By this time the members of two ski clubs, Bogong Ski Club and the newly formed small Skyline Club, had become enthusiastic about ski racing and joined the North Eastern District Skiing Association (N.E.D.S.A). In 1948 Mitchell organised a bus trip for the other

member ski clubs (from Albury, Bright, Myrtleford, Wangaratta and Beechworth, Tallangatta and Benalla) to visit Falls Creek. Shortly thereafter Albury applied to build a club lodge followed by Myrtleford.
During histime as a politician (1947 to 1976), and as Victorian Attorney General (1950-52) Mitchell was able to have a direct influence on the development of Falls Creek. Indeed, he was instrumental in the easing of barriers placed by the SEC powers-that-be on accessing the ski fields, be it on receiving permits to build lodges or permits to use the road. By 1951 the village as had been envisioned by Mitchell as a POW was taking shape. He too had committed to building a small Dawn Ski Club lodge with Dale Crookes.
LOCAL HISTORY
Mitchell continued to encourage and support the trans-Tasman ski competitions and in the early 1950’s visits by local clubs became more commonplace. In 1953 a team from New Zealand visited Falls Creek for the first time. This was some months after Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest.
Aware of this, Tom Mitchell and Toni St Elmo had proposed that an unnamed mountain to the north of Mt Nelse be named Mt Hillary to honour the event. (Although the naming was apparently gazetted it has been lost over time in reproduction of maps of the area).

The Meaning of Service
I became confused when I heard the word 'service' used with these agencies: Banking - 'Service', Postal - 'Service', Telephone - 'Service', Pay TV - 'Service' State & Public - 'Service', Customer'Service', Bureaucratic - 'Service'.
This is not what I thought 'Service' meant. Then I visited my uncle, he's a farmer, and he hired a bull to 'Service' his cows.
Suddenly WOW!!! It all came clear. Now I understand what all those agencies are doing to us! •
