ALLAN J FINDLAY MEMORIAL BURSARY - 2023 Applications Now Open
Allan J Findlay, better known as Big Al, was an amazing person and gave freely and generously of his time and compassion to the local community. He was well known for the support he gave to many organisations and individuals, for connecting with folk of all ages and backgrounds, and for making a huge difference in the lives of so many.
Allan moved to Porepunkah initially and became involved in youth welfare via Bright P-12 College and the O & K Community Health, but his care of, and unselfish contribution to the wellbeing of others extended far beyond his job. He was a genuine friend to all who had the good fortune to have encountered him. He was a true local from 1999, until his un-timely death in 2019 at the age of 60.
In recognition of Al’s life and generous contributions to his community, his relentless efforts to support and mentor, and his unwavering dedication to assist anyone in need, the Allan J Findlay Memorial Bursary has been established by the Lions Club of Bright and the Rotary Club of Bright. The purpose of the Bursary is primarily to assist young people in continuing Al’s philosophy of selfless community contribution, and to assist them to fulfil their aspirations of giving back to their community - something Al would humbly approve of.
Who can apply?
The Bursary application process recognises personal achievement and is designed to help young people with financial assistance to pursue their goals.
It is open to students in Years 9 to 12 levels, residing in the Alpine Shire – this includes young people who school out of the area, are home-schooled, or are no longer schoolbased.
Young people who are helping to make the world a better place are ideal candidates for this Bursary.
What is the Bursary likely to support?
The successful applicant will direct the bursary toward goals and ideas which may include elements of:
• Personal growth for the applicant.
• Benefits for the wider community.
• Activities/experiences not usually available in the local area.
• Definitive demonstration of community involvement.
How much can be applied for?
A total bursary of $1000 will be made annually to support young people with financial assistance to reach their goals and/or further their studies, expand their networks to reach out and connect with others in their area of commitment and/or concern.
Applications for 2023 will be accepted until 24.03.2023.
An independent selection panel will be established annually to consider and evaluate applications and to then allocate the Bursary monies.
Members of the Lions Club of Bright and the Rotary Club of Bright, as well as an independent Community member will form the panel Executive.
Enquiries and applications via Email to: Jennifer.Sgambelloni@education.vic.gov. au. •

Conquestathon Is Back
The Mount Bogong Conquestathon returns on Saturday 4th of March 2023. After a three year hiatus The Hoppet committee is delighted to be running this event again. Numbers of registered participants is currently below 100 and as we bounce back from a rough few years we would love to see the familiar faces of 2019 and prior join us again and of course any newbies wanting a great day out.
If you haven’t heard, there are now two categories. One for the fit and fast (competitive/race) and the other for those wanting to take a more leisurely approach and walk/hike around the 21km loop. Some 30 odd spot prizes including accommodation and outdoor equipment have been kindly donated from our sponsors meaning at present there is a 1 in 3 to 4 chance of taking something home which is more than just the great stories you’ll have of the day.
Cost to enter: Individual U18 $20, Open $30, Family $80.

You may have seen the work ute floating around with the company name ‘Dunny Boy Plumbing’ on the back. That’s Brad Redmond. Some years ago, Brad’s child got a finger caught in a door – requiring a serious trip from Gippsland to the Royal Children’s Hospital for micro-surgery. Brad and the family have not forgotten how they were looked after. As a result Brad is doing a bit extra for the hospital. For every new hot water service Brad installs, he will donate $100 to the Royal Children’s Hospital. A great idea – and if you were thinking about a new hot water service, you now know where to go. Round 2 - Mount Beauty
Team Mount Beauty will host Round Two of the Victorian Enduro Tour at Big Hill mountain bike park on the 4th and 5th March. Enduro racing sees the riders’ race timed descents on up to six different race stages in the park. Prior to each race stage riders need to pedal the liaisons to the top of the hill making it a big day in the saddle, particularly when pedalling the larger enduro bikes.
Mount Beauty is a favourite among enduro racers and is becoming renowned as a race to be at. This year top international Enduro World Series rider Hattie Harnden is entered in the elite women’s start list. Hattie should have some good competition in the elite women’s competing against Leah Ladbrook who is coming back to top form after recovering from a significant leg injury following a recent rattling crash in the DH at Buller. Rachael Hore will also be one to watch with some pedal sprints on the cards in a couple of the stages that should favour her fitness.
In the elite men’s category it’s hard to look past the skills of Ben McIlroy as a favourite who is in top form after podiums at both the Highline Enduro and the recent Mount Beauty DH. Chris Panozzo will also be one to watch as the master of enduro on his home trails. Darcy Wilkinson is also carrying good form from the last round at Highline and Hattie’s team mate in Thomas Locke will also be on pace. But of course never underestimate the power in the pistons of local legend Paul Van Der Ploeg. The bottom line is, this is racing you’re not going to want to miss!
Again this year four of the six race stages will finish at the bottom of the mountain bike park near the Big Hill trail head facilities, providing an excellent opportunity for Sunday entertainment for spectators.
The event will be held over two days. On Saturday 4th of March riders will practise on the six race stages and Sunday 5th March is race day! Riders will be on course from 8am and the event will be wrapping up with presentations around 3pm. As always Team Mount Beauty is well supported by local businesses, so riders and spectators alike can look forward to a terrific event atmosphere with coffee, catering and the Crank Handle Brewery bar on site on Sunday afternoon.
The event will impact on a large area of the mountain bike park and although the park will remain open to the public, we ask that non competitors avoid riding on the race stages. If you’re in the area and keen to ride it may be a great opportunity to try one of the other fantastic mountain bike parks in the region, or alternatively, just come along as a spectator and enjoy the great event atmosphere.
Parking at Big Hill will be different to normal during the event, so please follow the parking signage and if possible walk or ride your bike to the event to minimise parking congestion. Visitors wanting to do the gorge walk would be best to park near the visitor information centre and take the track around the back of the AGL terminal station opposite the information centre. •

Following work by the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) to remove a significant portion of the loose material on the major landslip between Mount Beauty and Falls Creek, Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) will ramp up works to complete the interim repair and long-term rectification process.
A team of experts are working to finalise the scope and timelines for the recovery effort - high summer rainfall and ongoing earth tremors coupled with moving debris present a huge engineering task.
Earlier this month we appointed Whelans Group Investments, a specialised civil contractor based in East Gippsland as our project delivery partner. We’ll be on the
ground working together with Whelans to ensure works move forward as quickly and as safely as possible.
e here at Major Road Projects Victoria have taken over management of the Bogong High Plains Road landslip rectification works.Whelans have set up their site office within the Mount Beauty Community Centre, where they’ll remain for the duration of the works.
Background
Hard Waste Collection
There is a large active landslip on Bogong High Plains Road at the entrance to Bogong Village. The landslip continues to move, with ongoing wet weather and earth tremors impacting its stability. For everyone’s safety, Bogong High Plains Road remains closed between Mount Beauty and Falls Creek. We estimate the landslip to be about 70 metres high and 100 metres wide. The loose debris and earth will need to be removed and the landslip stabilised before rectification works on Bogong High Plains Road can begin.
Falls Creek Resort Management will be collecting hard waste on Wednesday 26th April - the day after ANZAC Day.
Please see our Hard Waste Collection guidelines on the website, or if you require any additional information, please contact the FCRM Office on 03 5758 1200. • Summer Debrief
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.
What are we doing?
We’ll be working up to seven days per week, weather permitting, to remove debris and stabilise the landslip site using specialised equipment including long reach excavators and innovative mining technology. DTP commenced removal of debris prior to us taking over the works – and we’re working hard to remove the rest as quickly and safely as possible.
Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.
Keeping you informed
We’re committed to keeping you informed throughout works and will be working closely with a range of recovery agencies, local providers, tourism operators and Alpine Shire Council to understand how we can better assist impacted businesses and residents throughout the recovery program.
You’ll receive regular written communication from us aimed at addressing your concerns, particularly around when Bogong High Plains Road will reopen to vehicles. We understand this is one of the key questions on everyone’s mind.
We’ll also host Community Information Events in March 2023 in Mount Beauty and Falls Creek. Further details will be provided shortly.

PUBLICATION SCHEDULE:
Initial assessments are nearing completion, and the results will inform how we plan our works so that we can safely restore access to Falls Creek via Bogong High Plains Road.
A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Commencing at 12 noon, the afternoon will reflect Lyn’s enormous contribution to Falls Creek. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. Friends are welcome to pass this invite on and it is understood that members of Lyn’s family will be in attendance. •

GET TO KNOW FOGO
Better Waste Management
The way we dispose of your organic material in the Alpine Shire is changing for the better in 2023.
From July this year, Alpine Shire Council is introducing a new green kerbside bin and kitchen caddy for food organics and garden organics (FOGO) at properties located within urban kerbside collection areas across the shire.
Alpine Shire Mayor John Forsyth said a 2021 audit of waste bins in the Alpine Shire showed that 50% of the bin was made up of food and garden organics that could be recycled.
“Soon, these organic materials won’t need to be wasted in general waste bins and instead, they’ll be recycled through our kerbside waste collection,” Cr Forsyth said.
“We are committed to reducing our environmental impact as a communityremoving our organic material from landfill will reduce both our greenhouse gas emissions and our reliance on landfill.”
The service will also meet new State Government requirements for all householders in Victoria to be provided with an opportunity to recycle food and garden organics.
Cr Forsyth said the introduction of FOGO means households will be sorting their waste and recycling into three streams - the new
green lidded food and garden organics bin, the yellow lidded mixed recycling bin, and a red lidded general waste bin.
“It will take some time to get used to the changes, and we want to help our community learn and adapt to the new three-bin system as seamlessly as possible,” Cr Forsyth said.
“To help us, we’re asking our community members to fill out a quick online survey so we can learn more about their expectations around FOGO and the information they need going forward.”
Two surveys - one for residents and ratepayers (including holiday-home owners), and one for business owners - will be open until 5pm on Friday, 3 March, 2023 and can be accessed via the links below.
Residents and ratepayers - www.surveymonkey. com/r/ASC-FOGO
Business owners - www. surveymonkey.com/r/Business-FOGO
Paper copies can also be filled out at our local libraries in Bright, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford.
Members of the community wanting to be kept up to date on the upcoming changes or when the new services arrive in their area can contact Customer Service on 03 5755 0555 or info@alpineshire.vic.gov.au. •
