Tawonga Tourist Park

Reopening with a Celebration

Tawonga Tourist Park will be officially reopened with an afternoon of family fun, live music and local food on Friday, 14 April.

Visitors and locals alike are invited to the Park from 1pm until 5pm on Friday 14th for the formal celebrations and ribbon cutting, followed by family friendly games and live music by local musicians, Josh and Evie.

Food and drinks will be available to purchase from a variety of local food vendors.

The reopening comes almost three years after the park was closed in May 2020 due to critical waste-water management issues. Having taken formal management of the site from Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Alpine Shire Council has now completed extensive infrastructure works to ensure the park meets requirements to operate.

Alpine Shire Mayor Cr John Forsyth said works had included new sewerage infrastructure, as well as electrical and fire services.

“The Park is now connected to the North East Water sewerage network, and electrical services, including pole mounted transfers, switch boards and in-ground cabling, have all been upgraded,” he said. “We’ve also installed new fire protection infrastructure, such as fire hydrants, an in-ground water supply, fire water tank and hose reel.”

Cr Forsyth said while most of the works had been completed underground, visitors to the Park will see revamped street lighting, a refurbished camp kitchen and renovated amenity blocks.

“They’ll also notice a new driveway, park entrance and carpark, and of course the brand new park administration building, which encompasses an office, public toilet, and retail and cafe space,” he said.

“We are very excited to see the park welcoming guests once again this week, and look forward to celebrating with locals and visitors alike at the official reopening on Friday, 14 April.”

The project has been made possible with funding from the Victorian Government and the support of DEECA.

New park operator BelgraviaPRO is also busy upgrading the existing cabins, and will invest over $2 million into park infrastructure over the term of the lease, including new cabins, a playground, bike storage, glamping and other capital works.

Holiday Park Manager Mark Giles said BelgraviaPRO is proud to be the new operator of Tawonga Tourist Park. “We are pleased with the work that has been done so far and are excited to continue enhancing the park's facilities and amenities,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring that guests have a memorable and enjoyable stay at Tawonga Tourist Park, and we look forward to being a part of the community for years to come.” •

Random Kindness

Hello, we are the students of Falls Creek Primary School, Australia’s ‘highest’ school! Unfortunately, while Bogong High Plains Road has been closed due to the landslide, our school has been spread across two campuses, and we have been separated from some of our friends since early in Term Four, 2022!

Amongst all of this, an amazing act of kindness occurred. The road is currently controlled by a group of traffic controllers, who work 12-hour shifts (some overnight!). After they heard we lost one of our school soccer balls, some of the traffic operators decided to dye their beards purple, and raise money for our school to buy a new soccer ball. On Friday the 24th of March, Karen, one of the traffic controllers visited our school and gifted us two new soccer balls, plus, a brand-new ball pump! As well as this gift, they also donated us $252 that they had raised by dying their beards!! This was an incredible, unprompted act of kindness, and a shining light amongst a series of challenges for our school and community.

We have been writing letters of thank you to the traffic controllers, many of whom will leave once the road reopens for the start of next term. We are also brainstorming a gift we could purchase with some of the donated money, to give back to the traffic workers. Although we are excited for the road to be reopened and our school to return to the one campus, we will also miss seeing the traffic controllers and having them as part of our community.

BHP Road Update

Safety works are underway ahead of Bogong High Plains Road re-opening, planned for 25th April, subject to weather and ground conditions.

What we’re doing

It’s been a challenging week on site with persistent heavy rainfall hampering our ability to progress the removal of material. Crews experienced around 150mm of rain in just two days, forcing them to at times stop works due to safety.

Despite this, our team managed to install around 130 metres of new guardrail along the front section of the landslip, with further safety upgrades to be undertaken ahead of the road’s anticipated opening.

Emergency Access Track update

Due to recent rainfall, there has been damage to some sections of the track. While the track remains open, crews are working to clean up debris and complete emergency maintenance on the track with works continuing for at least a week.

There'll be delays at times where crews need to hold vehicles at either end of the track with delays of up to 30 mins for those wishing to access the track.

The track is being continually monitored and assessed by traffic controllers and crews on site, with drivers being urged to use caution and to drive carefully given the damage. A reminder that in order to use the track you must have an approved permit, which you can apply for by emailing humeregionalpartners@roads.vic. gov.au and requesting a link to the online application form. •
