OUR RUNNING FESTIVAL

Continues to Grow

Sponsored by the Mount Beauty and District Community Bank, the Mount Beauty Marathon has grown and evolved over the last 40 or so years to the point where it is now known as the Mount Beauty Community Bank Running Festival.

This, the 42nd staging of the Running Festival will be based at the Les Peart Oval, next to the swimming pool, this Saturday 20th May. The Running Festival, originally called the Marathon then Half Marathon, was first run by a group of committed local runners in 1980.

The event is now run by the Kangaroo Hoppet (with the help of many locals and community groups) and will be the only running event held in the local area this year. The event will include the normal 3km, 10km and a longer Trail Running aspect. Entrants in the 3km do a lap of the pondage with participants divided between competitive running and pleasant walking at a more social pace. The 10km course goes out to Damms Road and enjoys some gently undulating terrain. The 21km event up Mountain Creek Road has been discontinued – denying runners the beautiful views over the Kiewa Valley.

For the second time this year’s event includes a new trail run that has been designed by long-time local runner Bob Flower. Incorporating the iconic Survey Track, the new 14km course has two river

FoodWorks &Mt Beauty

crossings (only shallow water!) and some great hilly terrain for the adventure minded. Trail running is a great way to stay active and be engaged with the great environment that surrounds us in the Kiewa Valley.

The event is generously supported by the Mt Beauty and District Community Bank and without their support the event would struggle to survive. The organising committee has noted that organising

events is becoming increasingly expensive and administratively burdensome and the support from local community organisations is critical to the long-term success of the event.

As with previous events there will be a lot of support from the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, the Mount Beauty Men’s Shed, St Johns Ambulance, our local FoodWorks and the Mount Beauty Play Group.

A special thanks to Major Road Projects Victoria who are currently delivering the Bogong High Plains Road Landslip rectification works, their delivery partner Whelans Group Investments and Alpine Shire Council for helping to secure traffic personnel for the event!

Entries are cheap and online at www. alpinetiming.com.au or further information can be found at www.hoppet.com.au. Late entries will be accepted on the day in the Mount Beauty Swimming Pool foyer.

All ages and fitness levels are welcomed so please come and enjoy the running with us on Saturday 20th

And if you have a family member in the event, but are not running yourself, there is a lot to do and enjoy on the Les Peart Oval including the coffee cart and home-made goodies stall. •

ALPINE CHALLENGE 2022-23

Locals Do Well

Aclear and starry night allowed for a fresh 4am start on Saturday the 22nd of April for Australia’s toughest ultra-marathon – The Alpine Challenge.

A wet summer meant for wet feet and the five river crossings varied from shin deep to above the waist! The course was changed this year due to the BHP road closure and interference of normal logistic support. For the 160km course athletes this meant completing running from Falls Creek to Warby Corner via Spion Kopje and then completing the loop to Roper Hut, Cleve Cole Hut to Mt Bogong Summit, down Quartz Ridge and back up Timms Spur to Warby Corner – TWICE. And that’s only half way.

For the many who take two days to complete the course the weather was stunning with mild running conditions of 15 degrees during the day through to a tolerable 3 degrees through the night.

Ex- local and long time XC national ski member Nick Montgomery took out line honours in the 160km in an impressive time of 22hrs 19mins 16secs.

In the 100km event – NSW teenager Bridie Temple showed the field how to really run –literally running the full 100kms including the steep ascent of Mount McKay at the 95km mark to win overall in a time of 13hrs 9mins 30secs.

Five shorter distance courses were also well represented with a handful of locals from Falls Creek and Mount Beauty completing the 60km course. Showing that having the Alpine National Park and surrounding hills in your backyard as a training ground is just about perfect.

Congratulations to locals: Liz Ingram – 1st Female, Nichole Mckilliam – 2nd Female,

A huge thankyou to Running Wild who, through thick and thin, always put on an amazing event. Supported by Alpine Search and Rescue, thank-you to the volunteers, who for thereabouts 48hrs coordinate the aid stations, communications and evacuations of DNF’s.

The next Alpine Challenge reverts back to the 25th of November.

Until then remember: You don’t stop running because you get old, you get old because you stop running. Thanks to Sheepy for this wrap of the event and for

his dedication to local activities. Thanks also to Paul Ashton for continuing to stage the event through several years of ‘Trials and Tribulations’ causing changes of date –and all of the drama this creates.

All being well, the next event, the 2023 event, will be held over the weekend of Saturday 25th November to Monday 27th November 2023. Ed •

ROTARY EXCHANGE

Harri finds Italy…

When Harri Silvester found out that his exchange location would be in the mountains in the north of Italy he naturally hoped that he would have the opportunity to ski there. He already knew that he would be sharing daily life with his host family(s) and improving on his basic Italian language skills, but it turns out that there was much more in store for him. This is Harri’s report at the end of the first quarter of his Rotary Youth Exchange year.

The first three months of my exchange have flown by. I am living in Mantova in the north of Italy. My host family live about 10 minutes out of the city in a suburb called Porto Mantovano. I live with my host parents and host sister, who is the same age as me. My host family’s grandparents live on the same property but in a different house and often cook for us. I also have a host brother who returns occasionally from university.

I have learnt a lot of Italian in my three months but still have a lot to learn. I started taking Italian lessons at school, but I have found I learn the most by speaking with others. I am attending a Liceo Scientifico school, which is a science and math focused school. I have found school a bit difficult, but my classmates are all really nice and helpful.

During my Exchange I have gone to Roma with my host family, gone skiing in the Dolomites a few times, gone to Venice for

MOTORING TIPS Preparing For Winter

• Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick.

• Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades.

• Check the condition of your tyres – or even consider getting winter tyres- more grip in slippery conditions.

• Make sure your tire pressure is exactly what it should be.

• Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly!

• Check the amount of coolant/anti-freeze in your radiator. Our Service Centres have a Glycometer which will measure how cold your radiator fluid can get before freezing.

• Carry a few emergency supplies, like a blanket, warm gloves, ice scraper, shovel – in case you get stuck out on the road.

A Motoring Tip brought to you by Rick at Mount Beauty Service Centre 35 Bogong High Plains road, Mount Beauty Ph: 03 5754 4261

a day, visited Padova with my class, and gone on a scout’s trip to the Dolomites. I have also travelled with Rotary: I spent a day at Lake Garda with the other exchange students in this district and went to Sicily for four days. While in Sicily we stayed at a nice hotel on the ocean and went to places like Noto, Ragusa, Siracusa, Modica and Taormina.

This coming weekend I am going to my host family’s apartment in the mountains and the following weekend I have a Scouts weekend somewhere in Italy (we find out on the day). Next month I am going to Brescia for a Rotary Inbound/Outbound orientation weekend and in the summer holidays I am going hiking in Spain and spending a few days on the beach in Portugal. I am also going on a six-day hike with the scouts. Then in August I am going back to Sicily with both of my host families.

I could not be more grateful to everyone that has made this exchange possible for me, I have learnt so many new things, been to so many new places and learnt so much about the Italian culture, language and their food. I would like to thank the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, Rotary E-Club Victorinus Feltrensis, Kellie, Kristy, Meredith and my host family for making this exchange possible it truly is a lifetime in a year. • Harri

Your opportunity to bring international experience to your family.

The Rotary Club is now inviting applications from families that would like to host an international student. Here is a chance for your family to take part in this enriching and educational program without even applying for a passport. At this stage we cannot be certain about the details of the student coming to Mt Beauty in July this year (age, gender, nationality), but we have decided to put the word out early to give families a little time to consider this great opportunity. Hosting may be for various periods of time, but around 3 months is preferred. During this time the visiting student takes part in family life and attends Mount Beauty Secondary School. All expenses are covered by the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, and these include school uniforms, excursions and fees as well as monthly pocket money for the student. An allowance for food is also available on request.

If you would like to know more please ring Bob Flower on 0417 246 303 or Ewen Silvester on 0403 396 036. •

The (in)Famous Ice Plunge Returns!

You may call it “stating the bleedin’ obvious” that there are reasons we haven’t been able to stage the traditional Falls Creek Ice Plunge over the last couple of years. Can anyone tell us what the reason might have been? OK, well the good news is that there will definitely be an Ice Plunge this year.

Are you brave enough to face the chilly challenge of the Falls Creek Ice Plunge?

This annual ritual sees fancy-dressed clad locals and visitors take a dip into the frigid waters of the Rocky Valley Lake. This traditional custom is always performed on the first day of winter as an offering to snow gods to secure a bountiful winter season. Not only that, but all donations received go to support the incredible work of Fight MND in battling Motor Neuron Disease and searching for a cure. There are also over $2,000 worth of prizes up for grabs, donated by our amazing local stakeholders, hot drinks, a barbecue breakfast and warming fire pits available following the swim. A little tip – it’s usually warmer in the water than out of it! At 1600m above sea level, Rocky Valley Lake is Australia’s highest significant body of water. Air temperatures are commonly around 0°C at this altitude and water temperatures are expected to be around 3°C to 4°C.

To encourage participation, plungers will be enticed into the water chasing over 30 rubber ducks. With a heap of incredible prizes up for grabs all kindly donated by on-mountain and Mount Beauty

AGL Hydro

businesses, plungers can get hold of meal vouchers, cash vouchers and even an entire season resort entry permit. Not only that but all proceeds from the $10 entry fee will go to support the incredible work of Fight MND in battling Motor Neuron Disease. Fight MND Co-founder and Patron Neale Daniher and the wider Daniher clan will launch the eighth version of the famous blue beanie at the Big Freeze 8 at the MCG on Monday 13th June (the Monday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend).

So why not come along to the Rocky Valley Foreshore and participate. Or if threedegree water and tiny swimming trunks

isn't your thing, you can just donate and enjoy a breakfast roll cooked by the SES barbecue crew. (But you can’t work at Falls Creek if you haven’t done the plunge!)

What: Falls Creek Ice Plunge.

When: 10am - 12:30pm, Thurs 1st June

Where: Rocky Valley Foreshore, Falls Creek. Why: A FightMND fundraiser, and an annual offering to the Snowgods. How: Register at events.humanitix.com/ ice-plunge-falls-creek-x-fight-mnd. Donate at hub.fightmnd.org.au/diy-big-freeze-9/ falls-creek-big-freeze-plunge

It should also be mentioned here that four time Olympian and local girl Britt Cox will be coming along for the Plunge! •

Mentors Needed

For the TAC L2P Program? L2P matches learner drivers and volunteer mentors together so learners who are struggling to get their supervised hours, can be supported to successfully pass their driving test and gain their P plates.

In the past 12 years, the program has supported 130+ Alpine Shire youth to get their licence by providing lessons and driving practice in a community sponsored vehicle.

Mount Beauty and surrounds is in desperate need of mentors. So, if you would like to assist someone to get their licence, have some time to spare and enjoy giving to your community, contact us for more information.

Volunteer mentors receive training and have access to a dedicated vehicle, so to find out more speak to the L2P Coordinator on 03 5755 0555 or email info@alpineshire.vic. gov.au. •

Event Funding Program

Applications are now open for our annual Alpine Shire Events Funding Program. Event organisers are invited to apply for support for events to be held across the Alpine Shire between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024.

The annual Events Funding Program provides sponsorship support to a diverse range of local events which contribute to the adventure, culture, and economy of the region.

Mayor John Forsyth said Council is always looking at how we allocate Council resources and events funding is no different.

"In 2023/2024 funding will not include the cost of waste management and public amenity costs which will be passed on to event organisers," he said.

"This shift will encourage event organisers to take charge of their waste and work

organisers to help them ease into the waste management and public amenity changes."

Cr Forsyth said Council is working toward reducing waste and boosting environmental awareness across local events, with sustainability and waste management among the funding criteria.

"Applications will be assessed on the event’s social, environmental, and economic impact, in line with the Alpine Events Strategy," he said. “We strongly encourage event organisers to read the Strategy and familiarise themselves with the criteria and conditions."

"Our event organisers are often dedicated and passionate volunteers, who create opportunities for locals and visitors alike to experience something new, connect with their community and enjoy themselves. We are fortunate to have a diverse calendar of events that celebrate our environment, culture and history, feature our magnificent food and produce, promote health and wellbeing and attract visitors.

The Events Funding application process will be hosted by the SmartyGrants online grant management system. The SmartyGrants system is user-friendly for applicants and allows efficient management of the grants process for Council. Applications close at 11.59pm Sunday, 25 June 2023.

Community Grants Program

Applications for our annual Alpine Shire Community Grants Program are now open!

Community groups, clubs, Traditional Owners and young people are encouraged to apply for funding to support their next project.

This year’s community grants programs will see an injection of funds from Commonwealth and State governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements in response to the Black Summer Bushfires for revitalising our environments.

The objectives of this additional funding stream are to:

• Enhance the natural environment by removing invasive species, such as weeds and willows;

• Replant flora species native to the Alpine region;

• Educate and inform people through environmental signage relevant to flora and fauna species native to the Alpine region; and,

• Create or enhance community garden spaces to educate and inform people about fire-resilient native flora.

Mayor John Forsyth said in 2022/2023 Council awarded over $71,000 to community groups and clubs to support 21 important projects, with a total value of $220,000.

ongratulations to several members of Team Mount Beauty who achieved great results at the recent Nail Can Hill round of the Victorian Gravity Enduro Series 2023 – and therefore excellent results across the series.

In the Masters Men, local legend Brad Edwards finished 8th in the series – an excellent achievement. Congrats mate. And, local restaurateur, Tim McKechnie finished 8th in his class of Veteran Men –another great effort. Well done team. •

It is a credit to Ella Gould and her dedication and work ethic that she placed second in the Nail Can round, therefore earning a fabulous first place in Expert Women’s for the series. Well done Ella.Expert - Women's 1 - Ella Gould (photo: Marie Edwards)
