RIDE – PARTY – ENJOY! That’s Ignition

T

he Blue Dirt Mountain Bike weekend that kicks off some of the best mountain biking you will get this summer. Don’t be mistaken, there are other great parks around and the change of scenery is always refreshing. But we have great trails, great shuttles and even better scenery. We also have a little less dust on the road, it’s not as frantic and all of the trails lead back in to the Falls Creek village and the bike hub in Slalom Car Park. So yep, you like to ride bikes? You like to party - and you love a great weekend away? Well this is the biggest and best bike riding party weekend around!

Visitor Information Centre - OPEN FOR BUSINESS -

Ignition MTB Festival is a mountain bike event hinged on the core social elements of the rider lifestyle. …and it all kicks off this weekend – from Friday 17th November to Sunday 19th. From gravity shuttles to full day back country social rides the team at Blue Dirt have it all on the cards. Demo bikes are on offer from some of the best bike brands in the world. It is rare to be able to get the chance to test ride such a huge variety of amazing bikes free of charge on real trails with shuttle access. Check out what brands will have demo bikes at this year’s festival over on our festival website. https://bluedirt.com.au/ignition-mtb-season-opener/ Party… Yep there is no denying it, we like to party! We have a full line-up of musicians performing at the festival from afternoon acoustic sessions in the event village through to rocking bands playing in the beer hall at night. Sunday morning is usually a slow start for most – Could it be something in the water – or is it that crystal clear mountain air you don’t get to enjoy in the big smoke!

CONGRATULATIONS Mount Beauty CFA 75-year Celebration

I

n comparison to other Brigades, we are not really very old, but we are proud of our unique beginnings and all that has followed. From being established with the support of the SEC, to deciding to go it alone when the SEC withdrew their support after handing over the town to the Shire, to the day of registration by the Country Fire Authority, to receiving registration for Road Accident Rescue including rope rescues, to undertaking High Angle Rope Rescues, numerous volunteers have maintained a strong and viable Brigade for the protection of our community and more throughout our 75 years. Saturday November 11 saw the culmination of seven months of preparation for our big celebration. Plans had been formulated; marquees booked including tables, chairs, crockery, tablecloths, and cutlery; food organised (prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary who themselves were 70 years old this year… and yes! I know we don’t refer to them in that way in our correct world these days… they are our Brigade Support Members, but for us and them they are our Ladies Auxiliary with a proud history all their own.) Invitation lists were formulated; permits applied for; media contacted; Brigade Awards due studied and applied for; photographs from the past digitalised and put into a video; running sheets for the day discussed and re discussed; speakers approached and organised; archives extracted and studied and prepared for display; our Competition Reel was brought back from the Historical Society and old team uniforms found and prepared for display. Our Timeline History Board was compiled, produced, and hung and the Booklet of

memories was compiled, laid out and printed. The cake was organised (‘something ‘fiery’ please). Then add to all that the incidentals which aren’t so incidental at all, sound systems; video systems; registration on the day; liaison with CFA HQ to ensure they knew what was going on; visits to State logistics to pick up decorative ‘bits’ flags and tablecloths and flowers to add to the ambience! Not forgetting the major clean-up of the Station (how many trips to the Tip?) and the collection of porta loos and cool rooms in the days preceding the 11th.It was all worth it. Saturday November 11…. a glorious day in every way possible. We had about 110 invited guests who came to be part of our Celebration. The proceedings all took place in the Marquee. We heard speeches from FRV-RC Paul King; CFA Board Member Ross Coyle; Brigade Captain Russell Bowring; Brigade member Peter Plant who told us what it meant to him to be a member of the Mount Beauty CFA; Linda Barter and Shirley Christie our two longest serving auxiliary members who explained the pivotal role the ladies had undertaken in the early days in raising funds for much needed equipment. And Paul Macklan gave us a potted history of the Brigade. Awards were presented and this is not the place to list them all. However, we did have two very special Awards made. The Outstanding Service Medal was presented to both Andy Barbour and Paul Macklan. This is the highest accolade given by the CFA to a member and is awarded by the CFA Board who deem the nominee’s service worthy of the OSM. The Service must be outstanding. To have 2 OSMs presented in one Brigade at the same time is unprecedented and was certainly a highlight of our day.

Following the toast to our future the magnificent fiery cake was cut by our newest member Baylin Ford and our longest serving Auxiliary lady member Linda Barter. The day concluded with a barbeque tea and much reminiscing. Here’s to the next 75 years and more! • Sandra Eldridge

THE ALPINE CHALLENGE And We Mean a Challenge With distances of 100 mile; 100 km; 60 km; 42 km; 25 km; 16 km and 10 km, and a vertical elevation for the 100 mile event of over 7000 metres, the term ‘Challenge’ is not an under-statement. At this stage we are looking at around 260 entrants. The last couple of years have also been very challenging for the organisers, with a foot of snow a couple of days before the 2019 event, and bushfires restricting the course two years back. Then, last summer we had a little road closure. In order to enable more people to experience the magic of the Victorian Alps and savour the atmosphere of this unique event we have introduced a number of changes, adding in short course distances of 10/16/25 km, discontinuing the 36 km distance and replacing it with a new marathon distance taking in the best

of the high plains whilst offering fantastic scenery on a challenging course. The Alpine Challenge is without doubt the toughest, most challenging, most spectacular and rewarding all mountain trail runs in Australia—if not the southern hemisphere over seven distances. The 100 mile (160 km) course takes in six major climbs with 7,600 m of ascent and descent including Mt Feathertop, Mt Hotham, Mt McKay, Spion Kopje, Mt Nelse and Victoria’s highest mountain, Mt Bogong plus five river crossings. The 100 km involves over 4,000 m of ascent and descent and the 60 km course over 2,000 m of ascent and descent, whilst for those undertaking the 42 km run you will have over 900 m of ascent. The three short distances—10/16/25 km—offer an opportunity to experience great trail running and some of the historic huts on single tracks with great views over Heathy Spur and Rocky Valley Dam. It also offers the most challenging weather conditions, from intense heat during the

day or snowstorms and driving rain, to subzero temperatures at night. Whilst the event organisers can take action to reduce risk to participants, they cannot eliminate it, as a result runners need to be prepared to run in all conditions or have the experience and sense to decide not to run at all on the day. Participants are advised to train for all conditions, including running in storms, snow and at night. A special thanks must go to the volunteers that make this even happen - especially the Alpine Search and Rescue Squad,. so, it you’re out on the high plains next weekend, give these guys a wrap! •

FALL LINES End of Year Concert

A

s the days grow warmer and our gardens bloom, the Mount Beauty and District Community Band prepares for its end-of-year concert, aptly named “Spring into Swing.” Under the steady guidance of Musical Director, Glenn Ramage, new and familiar pieces have been rehearsed and fine-tuned to showcase the musical talents of all the band members, and in particular, three impressive soloists. From the Ovens Valley, Rachel Campbell will pay tribute to Benny Goodman on the clarinet and Robin Wood will impress on the xylophone in the quirkily named “The Joyful Skeleton.” Talented local trumpeter, Jeanette Teychenne, will mesmerise in the melodic “Stardust.” As well as these special performances, some familiar crowd-pleasers will also make an appearance, including “Amazing Grace,” “Duke Ellington in Concert,” “St Louis Blues,” and “A String of Pearls.” A concert guaranteed to get your feet tapping and head nodding!

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2024 Edition THREE

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY And Volunteering

S

ome years ago, your Ed went on a bit of a road trip down the Murray camping and generally just relaxing in different towns. In exploring each town, it did not take too long to discover an incredible truth. In each town you will find ‘an APEX Park,’ ‘A Rotary BBQ’ and/ or ‘a Lions Club Playground’ et al! All shining and very clear examples of just how important volunteering is to the core of any community. When you take a good look around the Kiewa Valley, you see great examples of where volunteers have tipped in – all with a view to help - to do our bit – for the community. And, while it is not the main reason, there is a certain amount of pride to be gained by volunteering. Interested? Here is just one opportunity available right now. The Dederang Recreation Reserve is the centre for many activities in the Kiewa Valley. It is home to the Dederang Bowls Club, Dederang Cricket Club, Upper Gundowring Tennis Club, Dederang Mount Beauty Football/Netball Club, Dederang Picnic Race Club, and the Dederang Golf Club (currently in recess). It has hosted weddings and funerals, a working dog event; it has been a rest venue for cycle races, motorbike events – the list is endless. It is also home to a Memorial Hall, MultiPurpose Facility and the Ozolins Family

Pavillion, which has a gym with regular exercise and Pilates classes and change rooms. Then there are the grounds, a playground, beautiful shaded areas, - all managed and maintained by the Dederang Recreation Reserve Committee of Management Inc., an elected committee of volunteers.

Just a small part of the wonderful Dederang Reserve, home to many activities and community events – not the least being the Dederang Picnic Races, to be held on 24th February, 2024. Pic – Courtesy Reserve Committee.

The Committee of Management manages the Reserve (Crown Land) on behalf of DEECA, to benefit user groups and the community. The Committee of Management receives funding from the Alpine Shire Council to assist with the running of the Reserve, as well as user fees, hiring of facilities and grants as applicable.

A meeting to elect a new Committee of Management for the Dederang Recreation Reserve will be held at the Multi-Purpose Facility on Tuesday 28th November, commencing at 7:30pm. Members of user groups and the public are encouraged to attend.

A balanced representation from the community and user groups meets on a regular basis to discuss potential issues, plan together, manage funding of the Reserve, manage resources, including water and to ensure that user groups are treated equitably and that facilities meet the needs of the community.

We are especially keen to hear from anyone who would consider taking an Executive role. Term of office is three years, commencing on 29.12.2023. •
