OUR FIRST FOX SUPERFLOW At Falls Creek

first time in a race will include their brandnew trails, which opened for this summer!

ith the Fox Superflow Gravity Enduro race, Rocky Trail Entertainment is bringing Australia’s fastest growing gravity enduro mountain bike racing formats to Falls Creek this weekend, 9th and 10th December. Over 300 competitors will compete in the two day event with six race stages showcasing the trail network at Falls Creek.

The Fox Superflow Series was established by Rocky Trail Entertainment in 2012 and has evolved into the biggest gravity enduro series in Australia. The events this year have spanned along the East Coast with Rockhampton the northernmost hosting venue and the Gippsland and Melbourne Regions as well as the VIC Alpine High Country being the growing region in the South. Over 6,000 race starts were recorded by 4,000 individual starters. This event format provides a strong social component, with riders being able to take their time during the transition to the next downhill racing section. The event has been designed specifically to engage families, groups of friends and couples, encompassing different ages, abilities and riding preferences. 30%+ of the racing field are juniors under 17 years of age; huge uptake in 40+ (another third of the field) and 10-15% eBikers.

The world-class Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park offers more than 40km of gravity and flow in the Victorian High Country. Rocky Trail’s Juliane Wisata explains that a special ‘Alpine Format’ had been developed for the Victorian High Country trail networks, which featured shuttled and riding uplifts. “At Falls Creek we are hosting the two final Victorian Series Races of our Fox Superflow. There’s one race with uplift shuttles, there’s one race to ride uphill and our riders can pick which race you do on what day!” “We’re looking forward to welcoming our Rocky Trail Racers at Falls Creek for an awesome day out to hunt down those precious seconds on the race stages!” •

JOIN THE COMMUNITY At Our CFA Raffles

I

’m often asked what makes Falls Creek so special that I choose to live here yearround and what on Earth could there possibly be outside of winter to do up here?! Well, there’s plenty of things that make this place special, like Mountain Biking, hiking, wildflower gazing, so many lake activities, the list goes on. But, when we really get into the depths of it, it’s the local community that makes this place so special. That’s right, the local community. There’s a good number of us local legends that TWO call thisSUMMER place home.EDITION When I first moved here in 2017 I wasn’t sure what a sense of AD community was andPROOF I sat on the sidelines pondering this for a few years while watching these selfless people give back with their time and skills before diving headfirst into volunteering at a few of our

local organisations. One of those is the Falls Creek CFA (or Fire Brigade). I joined after the 2019/2020 fires where I was welcomed at with open arms, a good chat, some light banter and a history lesson on the amazing efforts the volunteer crew have done over the years when bushfires have come knocking on our door. These people come from all careers and give their time and learn skills every week, to help protect our lives and buildings when fires do occur. Without going to deeply into it (it’s taken me a while to even get here) I will boast that we have founding members whoFRIDAY remain present, that’s over 25 years of 11TH NOVEMBER 2016 service! The local community, while small is number sure is large in social value. One of the institutions up here is the weekly Summer CFA Raffle that supports the aforementioned volunteer fire brigade. We meet Thursday evenings and we raffle off fabulous prizes from local organisations including fruit and meat trays, and some other goodies! All proceeds from the raffle go towards training and equipment for the Falls Creek CFA. For this Summer, the brigade wants to acknowledge the amazing venues who are open and thank them for their support by ‘sharing the love’ across the following venues.

IT’S OFFICIAL West Peak Hotel Becomes Mountain Monk Brewers

T

he West Peak Hotel came into existence in the year 2017 when four local families who had deep connections to the community bought the deserted building that was formerly known as the Mount Beauty Workman's Club, which was the oldest pub in Mount Beauty. When purchasing the building, the families reflected on the extensive history associated with the location, desiring to rejuvenate the place for people of all generations to visit without losing the local connection to Mount Beauty and surrounding communities. The occurrence of this was brought about by them, and they succeeded in making West Peak Hotel a venue for young and old. Since 2020, the families have continuously faced challenges, but they remained determined to fulfil their ambitious vision for the venue. Finally, in 2022, they successfully inaugurated a brewery with a 10-hectare litre on-site system. With this, Mountain Monk Brewers was born and, after operating as a craft brewery for a year and distributing their beers to various venues in Victoria and New South Wales, the moment has arrived for the venue to embrace a new direction. The West Peak Hotel is undergoing an official transformation into Mountain Monk Brewers, with the aim of not only benefiting the Kiewa Valley Region but also supporting other nearby businesses. The families' goal is to attract a greater number of visitors to this beautiful, unspoiled valley, thus fostering growth and prosperity for the township of Mount Beauty and its surroundings. However, there is no need to worry. Although you may observe some visual changes online and in and around the venue, rest assured that the owners and staff of this exceptional establishment will remain unchanged. They have made a commitment to deliver their cuisine persistently, organise community-oriented events, and provide entertainment to the local area.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the local community, the business will continue to host its popular raffles every Friday, providing an opportunity for residents to participate and win exciting prizes. Additionally, every Saturday, they will offer the community free live music to enjoy in the best As part of the brewing team, ‘Punky’ Brewergray (pictured left) pours a cold one! beer garden the Upper Stephanie Bellman (pictured right) shows off one the specialty’s canned on the Kiewa Valley has to offer. premises – Raspberry Sour. In addition to transforming into a complete brewpub, the crew of Monks are working on developing a wider range of beers and collaborations with other local businesses to bring to you their valued customers. In order to honour the rich history of the venue, the Monk team is also presently engaged in the important task of organising and preserving photographs related to the hydro scheme found during an array of renovations and upgrades for which they are planning to establish a community scrapbook for the near year. To mark the transition and their amazing journey, the team at Mountain Monk Brewers would like to extend an invitation to all of you on the 16th of December 2023 as a way to commemorate and rejoice in this occasion. We have an exciting lineup of activities for you that day, leading up to Christmas, including live music by local legends SquidJig, free brewery tours, beer tasting, amazing prizes for the best

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2024 Edition FOUR

THE ALPINE CHALLENGE It’s Personal

A

lpine Challenge, it’s more than just a race to the finish line. It’s a challenge not just physically but also mentally to push yourself to achieve what you never thought possible. The Alpine Challenge is seen as one of the hardest ‘races’ in Australia - though with its diverse range of distances, it’s a challenge that is suitable for everyone to participate in. Racing in the Alpine environment can have its many ups, downs (literally and metaphorically) but regardless of the (sometimes what feels like never ending) hill climb or the weather, the scenery is always spectacular (even when you can’t see much at all). And then don’t forget the vibe and comradery of the other runners. This is not a race in the true sense of a race, this is a race of your own personal challenge and about surviving whatever terrain or weather is thrown at you. For me, running within the challenge has completely changed my life. I’ve found a whole new level of self-achievement with every event I’ve done and I have pushed myself to my limits and grown all the stronger for it. Two years ago I never thought I would ever be able to run the distances that I have so far but now my goals are forever expanding because I am learning how much more I am capable of. The beauty of this challenge lies in the beauty of the area. Starting and finishing from Falls Creek the distance range from

exploring the local area, seeing bushmen’s huts, traversing across the ranges and even venturing out as far as Bogong and back (100km) or for the real crazy ones, Bogong to Harrietville then via Feathertop back to the finish of Falls Creek (100mile). I am lucky enough that I get to live and train all year round in this stunning scenery but it was a lot of fun and so exciting to chat to those that are visiting and participating for the first time. Running alongside them as they take in the magic of this incredible place themselves. All of those that participated in the event this year have come out with a tale of adventure and sense of achievement regardless of what they did. Then there was the added element of challenge (or adventure, it’s all in perspective) of the weather on the day. The day started with a drizzle (rain jacket on) , then came the fog which dispersed to sunshine (rain jacket off), then came the storm with hail and the works which forced many to take shelter wherever they could then back into sunshine again. Regardless of that, everyone came back to the finish with a smile.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY I thought the dryer was shrinking my clothes. Turns out it was the refrigerator all along! MISSING BOOK A hard-bound copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was given to this community in the care of the late Bill Sutton. It has been loaned out – and not returned. This is a vital piece of the history of this area and it would be fabulous to have it returned. If you are going through your old bookshelves, keep an eye out for it. Fortunately your Editor has obtained a Digital Copy form the Melbourne University for reference. Any news, please call 0400 350 488.

After all this babble of talk (I might still be coming down from my adrenaline high of running on the day), the truth of all this is, we are the lucky ones. We don’t have to travel Back in 2018, we had snow to like so many contend with. This year’s event people did, was challenging with downpours to partake or and wind – but it worked. volunteer in Pic – Jiri Cech this (or any of these for that matter) events. Should you choose, you could go out right now, take a hike, go for a run or a bike ride somewhere new and explore the amazing place we live. There are so many things to see in this part of the world, with endless possibilities, the choice is yours. • Nichole McKilliam

UPPER KIEWA VALLEY REGIONAL Renewal Needed

T

he Annual General Meeting of the Upper Kiewa Regional Arts Group will be held on December 14th in the Settlers Tavern at 7pm. I hope that community members will come forward to form a new Committee and keep UKVRA viable. Although UKVRA has a sound financial base, has recently renewed its affiliation with Regional Arts Victoria, with associated insurance coverage, and has assets including a Mac laptop, printer, glasses, banners and display materials, it is in need. The current Committee is retiring at the Annual General Meeting in December. Already reduced to only 5 members due to resignations over the past year, three of the executive have given notice that they will not seek nomination at the AGM. The Constitution specifies that there shall be a President, Vice-President Secretary and Treasurer, (the Executive Officers of the Association) and seven ordinary members of the Committee. There is provision in the rules for co-option of members of the Association to the Committee. What is needed is a new Committee. We have 36 financial members in 2023, another 15 people were members in 2022 but did not re-join this year. In 2021 we had 62 financial members.

There have been four quite well-attended adult performances brought by UKVRA to Mount Beauty this year, and one for children. No performances are scheduled for 2024 at present, but it is anticipated that the St Kilda Film Festival will come again if asked. There are sufficient funds in the bank for at least one other performance in 2024. UKVRA has provided support for the Arts in the Kiewa Valley for over 30 years, and currently auspices The Mount Beauty Writers Festival and the David Vigo Youth Music Scholarship to help those organisations by providing financial accounts, insurance, and the backing of an established Incorporated Organisation when applying for grants. In the past UKVRA assisted the establishment of the Mount Beauty Community Band and the Saturday Stitchers, now incorporated bodies in themselves. Federation Square in Mount Beauty was initiated by UKVRA which gained a grant for its construction in 2000 as well as providing a number of very affordable Performing Arts Show for the Kiewa Valley Community every year.
