VILLAGE AMENITY Reduced Vehicle Traffic

T

his year’s photo with this article is a shot of our Prinoth track vehicle (known as the pumper) – a relatively new addition to our fleet. The role of this vehicle is both summer and winter and is vital to any fire-fighting operation in this village. Another vital aspect of firefighting in the village is the ability of our CFA vehicles to get to any point in the village to attack any threat. Hence the reason we have restricted access to the village and no parking in the village. As a result of situations in previous summers, during the busy Christmas/January period, Falls Creek village was advised by the CFA and Victoria Police that there were problems with too many vehicles in the village. Therefore, the village will be closed to parking from 5pm Friday the 22nd of December to 8am Monday the 8th January, 2024. A half hour period will enable visitors to drive to their accommodation, unload and then remove their vehicle to the car-parking below the village.

are now open!

The irony is that while we have promoted the village for summer trade – and this summer trade is growing – it produces its own set of different circumstances. As a snow resort, the concept of the ski through village is part of the resort’s attractiveness and visitor parking has always been accepted as ‘down along the road!’ The rise in summer trade has created its own set of problems - from the simple ‘blocking in of other vehicles’ to the biggest problem - the inability of our major fire-fighting appliance - the tracked vehicle ‘pumper’ – not being able to get to a fire! The new ‘Pumper’ is designed to be used during snow season as well as during the rest of the year. It is capable of pushing water up to a height of four or five floors – very necessary in a resort on the side of a hill. It is also a little bit wider than your average ‘fire truck’ and the tracks make it slightly less manoeuvrable than a normal vehicle of this size. God forbid – should a fire start anywhere in the village and the ‘pumper’ not be able to reach the site, one does not need a lot of

imagination to know that it would be ‘good night nurse’ for pretty well the whole village. Then we have the mountain bike fraternitytaking advantage of our fabulous trails. One of the secrets to the success of our mountain biking program development is that the majority of the trails all hook up with the village. Special needs visitors are able to call in to the Alpine Resort /Visitor Information Centre to obtain a special access pass – register on-line first. With folk wandering around enjoying the beautiful clear air, fantastic scenery and the great activities - who needs a car anyway? •

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE For All

Little wonder the darkness has not understood it.

T

hese thoughts are based on these bible readings – Psalm 96; Isaiah 9: 2-7; Titus 3: 4-7; John 1: 1-14.

Each year we celebrate anew the birth of Jesus Christ, not because of habit, not to strengthen our relationship with God, but to challenge it.

So often, we try to put rules around our relationships with both God and one another; we seem to have an insecurity about being different, about each of us being individual, each of us having our own path to follow.

The Christmas story is about hope, peace, joy and love, and we need to ask ourselves if that continues to be our focus as we walk and talk the Christian lifestyle.

Therefore, we demand that others live as we do, follow our concept of life and follow our rules and regulations. Unfortunately, that is the story of us using and abusing the story of Christmas.

In Isaiah and John, Jesus is introduced as the Light shining in the darkness, a Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, the Word of action and the Life that brings Light. John goes on to say, “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”

Each of us has our own individual gifts and talents, and each of us has our own path to tread. Knowing and understanding our fears, God gives to each of us his Holy Spirit, providing us with the strength, passion, humility and grace to live and work with love and understanding (Titus 3: 4-7).

I would be surprised if anyone living in a ‘Christian’ country, whether they belong to a church community or not, have not been hurt and burned by Christians – I know I have.

The biblical stories concerning the birth of Jesus, whether in the psalms, prophets or gospels resound with joy. They are all heralding a new and radically different relationship between God and humanity,

revealing that His immense love is for all. There are no more boundaries, no one is excluded. Everyone needs to be loved. God sent Jesus as a gift to the world, which inspired our tradition of sharing gifts with each other. When we accept that we are loved and lovable, we then respect ourselves for who we are, giving us the freedom to do the same for others. We can each be a gift to our communities – ain’t that the truth – with so many shining examples of people in this community looking after each other. This is Christmas! •

SHOP LOCAL For Your Own Sake

S

mall businesses are often at the heart of every small rural community. Can you imagine what a regional town or village would be like without a post office, a pub or a fish & chip or burger shop? I can’t. According to www.money.com.au Australia’s business sector is dominated by small and medium enterprises. 97.3% of all business in Australia, or around 2.5 million, are small businesses (0-19 employees). Australia's small business sector contributes more than half a billion to the national gross domestic product (GDP) (www.themandarin.com.au).

INTIMATE DINING EXPERIENCE Our intimate personal dinners for small group are proving to be a favourite with regulars and visitors. Please feel free to contact us and discuss your requirements and timing. Regards, Roi and Sue.

At a time of year when most of us partake in a frenzy of purchasing only outdone by the retail frenzy adopted from America known as Black Friday, it’s important to consider where we spend our hard-earned dollars to purchase gifts for our loved ones. I’m not the biggest fan of behemoths like Amazon, (neither is your Ed) but I am bat-shit crazy about a bargain. Few things give me a greater sense of satisfaction than grabbing a bargain, especially when I wasn’t looking for it. I get the appeal of Amazon, and its ilk, even if I try to avoid it 99% of the time. Discounts, bargains, and the ease of ordering pretty much everything online is hard to go past. I recently discovered Kindle Unlimited and felt like I’d won the lottery. For a person who could easily walk out of a bookstore with $300 of books, the idea of unlimited books per month made me jump and down squealing with glee. I may have lost most of the week before last binge reading. What I am a fan of is shopping local, wherever and whenever I can. Why? To quote Shakespeare, let me count the ways. 1.

By shopping local or support small businesses, you cycle money back

into your community. While many of us shop at large chain stores due to discounts or bargains, buying local is better for your community and often for your wallet. 2.

The taxes generated from local businesses support the local government. This government revenue is then reinvested into the community.

3.

You’re minimising my carbon footprint. A local small business tends to make more local purchases, which requires less transportation (less pollution and congestion). While we know that a lot of stock or stock components are shipped into Tawonga, Mount Beauty & Falls Creek, if buying locally we’re not adding any further kilometres to the products’ journey.

4.

You’re helping to create or maintain local employment. 5.1 million people are employed in Australia’s small businesses (www.themandarin.com.au).

5.

Small businesses play a significant role in supporting local organisations including charities, youth organisations, local first responders,

SHOP LOCAL local service groups and more. Local businesses benefit from a strong community, consequently the owners tend to be more engaged members of the community themselves. 6.

For a small-business owner, all purchases, deals, and positive reviews matter. Local store owners value every single customer, and their very livelihood hangs on their customers’ happiness. Local businesses often hire people with a passion for their products or the ins and outs of the business they are working in.

7.

Small businesses are always asking what can we do differently or better? To stay afloat, we need to stand out from the crowd, which allows small-business owners to become innovative.

8.

By choosing to support a small, independent business you’re acknowledging the tremendous risk and challenges inherent in being an independent business owner.

9.

Small businesses are the bread and butter of our economy, even though at times they are the underdogs next to big box conglomerates, global banks, and large supply chains. It’s not just local communities that benefit from local independent businesses. The best shopping strips for tourists are also those which are best for locals, thanks to businesses that supply the daily essentials, life’s little luxuries and those quirky outlets not found anywhere else (Sydney Morning Herald, 2018). Thank you to all the people that helped to make my dream come true this year as a small business owner. I am so grateful to each and every person who visited my Falls Creek store, who spent money in my store, who ordered products online and had them delivered, who told a guest or friend about my shop, who shared my social media posts and who told me they loved what I was doing. It’s been a blast. I can’t wait to do it all again in 2024. • Cheers, Nyree. www.idreamofsnow.com

Small independent businesses bring originality and variety into a world that’s becoming increasingly homogenised.

FALL LINES Habitat Support

W

e think our beautiful alpine resort is a pretty special place to be – and there are many other creatures that feel the same! Falls Creek resort is one of the few places in Australia that is home to the mountain pygmy possum, an endangered species with fewer than 2,000 left in the wild. The possum is Australia’s only hibernating marsupial, living among the rocks and boulders of the Bogong High Plains for up to seven months each year. This week, our team will be supporting the roll out of Falls Creek Alpine Resort’s mountain pygmy possum habitat improvement project by planting 500 small native plants around a historic quarry in the ski field, just below Pretty Valley Road.

This location near Ruined Castle chairlift was selected by biologist, Dean Heinze, as an area of importance for maintaining suitable habitat into the future. The possum population in this area and out at Mt McKay are surveyed each year by the same biologist to inform the long-term management of this threatened species. So far 3,492 plants have been planted since the project commenced in 2021. The additional 500 plants going in the ground this week have been provided thanks to funding from Zoos Victoria's Totes for Wildlife Program. With this habitat revegetation project, we are helping to infill the slow natural shrub

FALL LINES Confidence and Resilience

O

n Monday 11th of December, Tawonga Primary School held the official opening of the new Story Poles. The Story Poles have been a work in progress this year, since obtaining a grant from Arts Victoria. The grant allowed Tawonga Primary School to invite an Albury/Wodonga artist, Pinky, to the school over terms two and three. During this time the students explored and created multiple forms of ceramic art. The final pieces of art were the ceramic beads used to build the Story Poles. The Story Poles signify our belonging to the area. Each student made a bead that represented how they belonged, plus beads were made for community members and businesses that help the school and belong to our school community. The businesses include; The Mount Beauty Op Shop; Campbell’s Mt Beauty Hardware; Falls Creek Coaches; Old Tawonga Store; Tru Tree Care; and the This Week publication, with Ken Bell also receiving his own bead! Additionally, beads were created to include school programs. These include; The River Detectives; Maths Australia; The MSL literacy program; and The Aussie Bird Count. The Story Poles have been placed around our school fire pit, a place

we come together to cook, share stories, learn and play. Thank you to Arts Victoria for providing this wonderful opportunity. Additionally, thank you to Ben Truen and Tru Tree Care for donating the beautiful Iron Bark logs, Leo Cardwell and Mount Beauty Bobcat for digging the holes, and Peter Rossbourgh for drilling in the metal rods. Thank you to our parent helpers, Bec and Bec, for your help in the ceramic bead creations. Finally, thank you to the wonderful artist, Pinky, who not only helped the students learn about ceramic art, but also how art can help us feel a sense of belonging to place, build confidence and resilience. • Thanks to Rachael Fallon for this article.
