CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Roller-skiing actually has its own World Cup series performed in the Northern Hemisphere summer - it’s a proper thing. The 100m world record for Roller-skiing is 11.03 seconds. Buy a pair of ‘wheels’ and some tungsten tips to put on your ski poles and find a path or closed off road to practice vital on snow skills. In Melbourne I’ve found well over 50km of roller skiable trials to roller-ski on. Mostly on bike paths and in parks. The next best thing, and something which is very easy, is to go running with poles. Somewhere hilly is good for this. To put this in context, this kind of training is also what the best skiers in the World are doing right now as they prepare for winter in December. The reigning World Sprint Champion Frederico Pellegrino, an Italian, just finished a summer training camp in Sardinia, with Team Italy where they cycled around the whole island and swam at the beach each day. The World 100m Roller-ski record holder Ludvig Jensen enjoyed a trip to Nice in France where he roller-skied along the many bike paths they have beachside. French Distance Champion Maurice Magnificat has recently just summited the 4000m high Mont Blanche three times in three days, on bike, foot and roller-ski respectively as part of his summer training.

‘Enjoy getting fit’ It may be a weird time of year but it’s also an exciting time of the year, a time to see if the work will pay off and you’ll hit the snow feeling fresh and strong. There are not many better feelings. So make sure to throw the excuses out the window and give

OUR COMMUNITY And its People
J
ames “Wongy” Wong is the new Operations Officer at the Falls Creek CFA. I dropped by the Station for a chat.
TW: “Hi James. Tell me about the Falls Creek CFA.” James: “Falls Creek CFA is a 12-month of the year brigade. There’s a community of people, a core group of about 12 who are passionate about this environment and the Brigade.” TW: “How did you end up here?” James: “It’s kind of been 12 years in the planning, to work in the alpine space. This environment has been a passion of mine and it was an opportunity to combine work with this complex environment. There are a lot of challenges up here, which really drives me to build capability for the community, for the CFA, for emergency management, and also for myself.” TW: “What are the specific challenges for the CFA up here?” James: “The influx of people is a unique challenge up here. Some people don’t have a lot of knowledge around safety in an alpine environment – whether that’s driving on the roads or clothing. Some of the other complexities are the isolation – there’s one road in and one road out, and there have been landslides and the road gets blocked.” “Another issue is evacuations - because of the temperature. You throw snow on the ground and at night people aren’t dressed to evacuate. People are up here to enjoy a

holiday and don’t expect that type of thing to happen.” TW: “Apart from fire call outs, what else does Falls Creek CFA deal with?” James: “Fire Brigade is more than just fire. We deal with hazardous materials, chemical spills or gas leaks. There’s responding to car accidents. We also support Ski Patrol, SES and Victoria Police in cases of landslides or even chairlift evacuations, and potentially any search and rescues that may occur. Particularly up here, the emergency management approach is all hands on deck.” TW: “Where have you come from?” James: “I grew up in Templestowe, but I live in Chadstone with my wife Freya and two kids Jasper and Ruby. They’re coming up here at the end of June. Jasper is 8 and Ruby is 5, turning 6 in August.” TW: “Why did you join the CFA?” James: “I always wanted to be in the emergency services. I initially applied to become a police officer, then I saw advertisements for Fire Brigade, and I thought, well, everyone likes a fire-fighter. So I changed course and got in. I haven’t looked back since.” TW: “What’s been your motivation to come to Falls Creek?” James: “The motivation is to work in a complex environment, and to be part of an alpine community. I’ve done it overseas in Colorado, but never here at home. I’m also a telemark skier, and enjoy backcountry skiing and snow camping.” TW: “What are your first impressions of Falls Creek and the Valley?”
CFA Operations Officer, James Wong. Pic – Struan Jones
James: “I love the landscape. The Victorian Alps have always been a passion. I really enjoy how community-minded everyone is, and how passionate everyone is about Falls Creek and seeing it succeed.” TW: “And if someone wants to get involved in the CFA?” James: “Come and knock on the door. CFA is always looking for committed, passionate people. If someone’s going to be here consistently, season in, season out, or even a new resident - that’s the type of people we’re looking for. We train on a Wednesday night.” “The Brigade is only successful because of its dedicated volunteers, and I acknowledge their support.” TW: “Thanks, James. Good luck for the season.” • Struan Jones For free fire safety advice you can contact James Wong at the Falls Creek Fire Station on (03) 5758 3642 or 0402 013 228.

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND Celebrating Achievement

alls Creek officially opened the winter season on Saturday, 9th June. Despite the lack of natural snow, (the homage to the snow gods may have got lost), there was still plenty to celebrate. Return visitors make their annual pilgrimage to the resort to catch up with old and new friends alike or to just be part of the alpine community Falls Creek is so well known for. Over the summer months, the resort has been abuzz with construction work. Ranging from Falls Creek Ski Lifts huge investment in replacing the Eagle Chairlift, the substantial upgrades and improved amenity from substantial developments at Mini Flats, Kona Yuki, BSM, Pretty Valley, Les Chalet & Riverina Ski Lodge through to the transformation developments at the new look Cloud 9 and Frying Pan and the changes underway at Dicky Knees and Maggies. The visual impact is stunning and supports the resorts ongoing adaptation and it’s all-seasons alpine village reputation for the many hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. Resort Board Chairman Jo Shannon says “It really is a wonderful time for Falls Creek. The summer season saw year on year increased visitation, and with the significant investment, visitors will be delighted when they visit this winter season.”

2018 also sees Falls Creek enters its 71st year as a recognised ski resort and time passed since the first lodge – ‘Skyline’ - was built. The history of skiing on the high plains and clubs that participated in the sport predates this. However, with this initial development came many more, and the foundations of the resort were cemented. The weekend was also an opportunity to officially welcome and acknowledge the work of three artists whose stunning pieces are on display within the resort as part of the resort’s Arts & Culture strategy.

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series. MR: How many national events have you raced? Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium). ith 11 of the last 25 opening weekends having been celebrated with no snow to be seen, season 2018 at Falls Creek still opened, like all those before it, with rousing celebration - be it catching up with mates, old and new; the excitement of finding out all the changes that had occurred across the resort since last snow season; and of course, getting a first ride on Falls Creek Ski Lifts new Eagle Chair. In between official engagements, I got to meet up with the Traverse Alpine Group at the freshly renovated Cloud 9 - all I could say was… “WOW”! Of the many upgrades, changes and additions up there, my highlight would have to be, the toilets. YEP… the toilets. All the regular visitors to Falls Creek will know what I mean! I anticipate my excitement will quickly be overtaken by the first opportunity I get to
eat up there, with the offering of wood fired pizza, the rotisserie, café & deli selections and waffles (for the kids allegedly!). For the grownups, the mezzanine bar will become quite the favourite, with its comfy chairs and spectacular views. As we get more snow (it’s falling as I write), exploring the other new offerings on-piste, at Maggies and Dickie Knees’ only adds to new experiences for the season. The team from Disabled Wintersports Australia were also on hand to open the new Alpine Accessible Accommodation facility at Howman’s Gap. A “first of its kind” above the snowline in Australia, it is the culmination of the vision and passion of the dedicated crew at DWA. Overcoming obstacles or challenges is something DWA and its members know all to well, and this development presented a few more prior to its completion. The result however is a facility that will provide opportunities, experiences and lifelong inspiration and memories. The Chair of DWA, Paul Lamb, shared several stories about the work they do and the opportunities they can provide for their members. With heartfelt emotion he bought a few watery eyes to the conversation and to those around him. The organisation’s purpose and its volunteers are nothing short

of inspirational. Here’s to a tremendous year and an even brighter future. With the beginning of every season, all the prognosticators proffer up their expectations for the season ahead. Whilst the professionals use science, climate models and powerful computers to make their predictions, some others rely on, let’s say, a more unconventional approach. From one such alchemist, better known for his famous status as restaurateur extraordinaire, the inimitable Barry Iddles from Elk @ Falls, explained over a glass of the Bannockburn wine region’s finest Pinot Noir (or two), a theory about the crabs at Blairgowrie, in Port Philip Bay. As such, #crabwatch2018 was borne. The theory being, when the water temperature falls below 14°C, the crabs moult their shells and as quickly as they’ve come, they leave the bay. What does that have to do with snow? Well, allegedly, within six days of this happening, it snows, and the season officially kicks off with biblical proportioned snow falls. #nowivehearditall… Given the forecast (www.snowsbest.com/ snow-forecast/falls-creek/) for the next week or so, those crabs better get a move on… We have it on very good authority (Barry in his speedos at Blairgowrie), that Port Philip Bay is averaging 13°C. Now, with snow on the way, get out there and have some fun… • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

“I am Falls for Life”
E
very now and again, I need to pinch myself… to take a moment to reflect on what a privilege it is to be a part of the local community living, working and feeling truly connected to this stunning alpine environment. Last weekend’s official opening was no exception and I can’t help but feel that I simply belong. As a ski lift company, we talk a lot about the importance of creating meaningful connections with our guests, helping them to feel like they too belong. But what does that look like, how can we achieve it and why does it even matter? Today, as household incomes grow, so too has pressure around how that income is spent, meaning people are more concerned with value-for-money than ever before. Value is quite different to price. Price is all about getting the best deal… but value is about what’s most important to you – and it’s different for everyone. As a result, it’s no surprise that demand for value is leading to a rapidly increasing desire for highly tailored experiences. A tough gig for businesses!

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Disabled Wintersport Australia President, Paul Lamb is excited about what the new facility can offer its members. “It allows us to serve unmet demand in our disability programs with accessible accommodation,” He said. At a guess, around 50 people attended the opening – enjoying a round of speeches, a couple of fine videos showing the experience of young and older DWA members before then going outside to enjoy the actions of Danielle Green as she broke the Champagne bottle to ‘launch’ the new Alpine Accessible Accommodation Centre. Another pleasing part of the weekend was the informal chat and tipple courtesy of Falls Creek Alpine Association, this year hosted by the AAC. The business part was where President David Risby handed over a cheque for $750 to Paul Lamb, President WINTER EDITION SEVENTEEN of DWA. This contribution is greatly appreciation as AD PROOF there are still a couple more issues to sort. Completing the installation for the workshop and fit-out room ($10,000), fitting out the co-ordinators flat ($40,000) and installing the Elevator ($100,000). If you can help this fabulous in any way, the Howman’s Gap Finishing Touches Go Fund Me is: https://www.gofundme.com/ howmansgap. Anyone with a few spare dollars would feel good about contributing to such a worthy operation. Check out the video by Nik Sugden about DWA and made last season.

TIPS FOR SNOW DRIVING To be Safe 1. Beware of Bridges– Bridges are the first to freeze and ice over in cold weather. Unlike roads which lose their temperature on their surface, bridges are exposed to the wind and cold from underneath which promotes the perfect environment for black ice. Even if the roads seem okay in mild snow, use extra caution when you get to a bridge.
2. Clean Your Car– Don’t slack off when it comes to cleaning your car. Even if you’re just driving a short distance, that snow of your roof is a hazard. It can fall in front and obstruct your vision, or it can fly off on to the car behind you which is seriously dangerous. Also, always keep cleaning essentials in your car all winter long such a scraper and shovel and make sure your car has enough windshield wiper fluid for the season.

How smart is this?
3. Keep Sand or Salt! Getting stuck in the snow is the worst, and the more you try to accelerate out of it, the more you dig yourself deeper. Adding some sand or salt in front of your tyre will provide the traction the tyre needs for you to drive your way out. Keep a bag in your boot if possible. 4. Emergency Kit– While emergency kits are important all year round, they are extra crucial in the winter months.

ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODE Respect Gets Respect
R
egardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities that common sense, protective equipment and personal awareness can reduce. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment. Observe the Code and Share with others the Responsibility for a great experience 1. Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air. 2. Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress. 3. Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury.
4. Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. 5. Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs. 6. Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
Know the code. It’s your responsibility. Failure to observe the code may result in cancellation of your ticket or pass by ski patrol or other authorised personnel. Respect gets respect - from the lift line, to the slopes, through the park and the resort. •
7. Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above. Look uphill and give way to others when entering/exiting a trail or starting downhill. 8. Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment, even when riding chairlifts. 9. Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol. 10. If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol.
