FROM THE CEO Hooray for Holidays…

S

chool holidays are here, everyone is excited, and the snow cover at Falls Creek is the best it’s been in nearly three decades - what a start. The mountain is in excellent shape, with snow, both natural and man-made everywhere, groomed and natural runs galore and plenty of options for everyone no matter what your ability. Speaking of ability - have you booked a ski or boarding lesson yet? I’m a firm believer in no matter how EDITION good we think we are, WINTER EIGHT there’s always room to improve. Falls Creek Ski Lifts has an excellent, if not the best AD PROOF ski school in Australia, with a range of instructors capable of challenging even the most accomplished skier/boarder. Add to this, the recently renovated Cloud 9 restaurant which provides a great location to assist in drop offs and pickups, or meet up after your lesson, before you head back

for the matter) have ‘tired’ legs… during school holidays the shuttles run until 9pm every night. So we’ve made the choice of heading out even easier, now the tough bit is choosing where you’d like to go… so grab the kids, head out early for a bite to eat and experience ‘foodie heaven!’

Now that is sorted, for the adrenalin junkies, check out the ‘Thrills & Chills’ section… great conditions exist for all the activities listed under this section. They are all ‘must do’s.’

Foodie Tip of the Week: BE Foodstore… I dropped in here last weekend for a quick pit stop and some brekkie, knowing I’d be able to get my weekly dose of veggies (the Lean & Green Super Shake) and the Milawa bakery’s fruit toast, with cinnamon butter. The staff are great and friendly, the service is quick and the views up the mountain to the Summit, on a blue-sky day, are just stunning. Like all our great restaurants, there isn’t a meal they don’t do well, so drop in for lunch or dinner, their wine list is extensive and the local craft beers are on display too.

When you get to the end of the day, the best thing about having exhausted yourself exploring the mountain isn’t taking your boots off, or that medicinal, pain soothing glass of wine (or two), it’s knowing, that if you choose to, you’ve got an incredible array of choice when it comes to deciding on where to refuel. Falls Creek has more venues than any other resort in Victoria (or NSW for that matter), so whilst you’re here, why not try a few.

Daily departures from Melbourne, Albury and Mount Beauty will have you PRICELESS on the slopes sooner – without the fuss!!

Leave the worries of hiring and fitting chains, coping with anti-freeze and icy roads behind you!

As I write the forecast for the 8th of July onwards looks excellent, with another front coming and a blast of Arctic air hitting just as you are probably reading this. The wind is likely to be a dampener on proceedings, but as with all the snow storms so far this year, we’ve been rewarded with blue sky days shortly thereafter! A word of caution, on great blue-sky days, the afternoons chill down quick, and the ‘bleed’ from the melting snow makes conditions a little slippery. So, drive cautiously and safely if you’re leaving the resort, watch out for black ice and if instructed make sure to fit chains… this is for yours and others safety… oh, and carrying chains (that you know how to fit) it’s the law!

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Guide Training Clinic

L

ast weekend DWA held their regular new guide and existing guide training clinic. The clinic is designed for those new to adaptive snowsports and for existing guides to advance in specialised areas. The clinics provide a diverse platform for a person to spring into a guiding future with DWA. The experienced trainers provide motivation and support as they explained the fundamental concepts of adaptive snowsports and the various on-snow disciplines and the adaptive equipment to assist a participant on the snow from tethers, snow wings, snow glider and out riggers to bi-ski and dual ski, just to mention a few. The course started on Friday night with many guides taking the trip from Melbourne to Howman’s Gap after work. On arrival they were welcomed with the new Alpine Accessible Accommodation for

On Saturday it was up early for breakfast with the team debrief and the loading of DWA adaptive equipment to go up to Falls Creek. The Saturday was a testing day weather wise and the day included information on sit-ski fit outs, mountain safety, blocking and stand-up guiding skiing and snowboarding. Not to forget the guides free ski time and independent practice throughout the two days with specialised skiing assistance included. By the day’s end, all new and existing guides were ready to go back to their accommodation for dinner and a rest. Sunday the new DWA guides awoke to a magical Falls Creek day - fresh snow, blue skies and a crispness in the air that keeps the snow in excellent condition. On the mountain DWA made a presence on Main St, Highway, Drovers and Wombats Ramble. Several groups practiced

It was also time for the Falls Creek Ski Lift crews to get involved and to give the DWA guides a hand when loading. DWA guides and Falls Creek Ski Lifts crew work as a team to deliver the best possible on-snow experience for all DWA members. It was good to see, well done to both teams and huge thankyou to Falls Creek Ski Lifts. All perfect enjoyable days must come to an end and Sunday was no exception, except that the new guides were now equipped with knowledge and practical experience in adaptive snowsports. Congratulations to all the new guides and existing guides who completed their training. Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) is a member-based organisation. Our members range from recreational skiers to Australia’s Winter Paralympians. FROM THE GM Falls Creek Exclusive…

H

ere at Falls Creek we pride ourselves on being the resort which best connects with snow loving Australian families. Between the progression perfect terrain and our award winning snowsports school, learning to ski and snowboard is now more fun! Last year we kicked off our partnership with the powerhouse in kid’s entertainment Nickelodeon, recognising that for some kids they need a bit more encouragement to try something new. Engaging with other things they love (like characters from their favourite shows), working with Nickelodeon injected more fun into the snow and provided yet another great reason to come to Falls Creek. Last season, in a Southern Hemisphere first, we celebrated September school holidays with a visit from Sponge Bob and this year we’ve upped the ante. In a world first, Nickelodeon has taken over our kids programs at Snowsports School. For 2018 we have the PAW Patrol Snow Club, Sponge Bob Junior Workshop and

PAW Patrol into the resort for July school holidays, understanding that our littlest skiers and snowboarders sometimes need more engagement and encouragement to help them fall in love with the snow experience! This season’s PAW Patrol activation is open to everyone, there’s snowball target practice, toboggan race course, digging area and even a few jumps

The fun continues when the sun goes down with PAW movie nights happening at QT. I was lucky enough to experience this with my family; my little one Harry, had his dinner comfortably lounging on a gummy bear inflatable chair whilst watching his favourite Nickelodeon programs on the big 26TH WINTER EDITION FOUR FRIDAY screen, and my husband and I could enjoy the delicious dinner (and some precious AD PROOF adult time) with visiting friends at Bazaar next door.

DINING OUT Nelse – Where else? The best-kept secret on the hill - just for your eyes only - word is the meals served in many of the private lodges are on a par with the meals served in the big, fancy restaurants. Provided you are lucky enough to find a lodge that will welcome a nonguest diner. There are a few such places at Falls Creek and Nelse Lodge is one of those lodges! Long-time Falls Creek locals Ros and Graham Parker have left the lodge and this season sailed off into the sunset. Actually not quite, they are still popping up all over the hill and it is lovely to see them enjoying their post Nelse lives. The helm of the good ship Nelse has been passed on to a new crew. Martin Dean and Genevieve Hoyle are the new captains and they have a solid crew supporting them as they set sail into winter 2018. Martin and Genevieve may be new to Nelse but they have both had an association with Falls Creek and the Victorian Ski fields in their past lives. In his 20’s Martin spent his time exploring Hotham and Dinner Plain. In the 1950’s Genevieve’s father Adrian Hoyle was an engineer involved in building Mogul Ski Club. Nelse Lodge was built in the mid to late 1950s, located more or less in the middle of the village it has offered comfortable, friendly, ski in-ski out, family operated accommodation for many years. The main room of Nelse Lodge is wide, warm and welcoming. As you enter the lodge the bar is to your right, close to a large open fireplace that is kept happily fed with logs for most of the season. The bar at Nelse is small and intimate and has long been a haven for locals, guests and those in the know looking for a quiet place to bend an elbow. Opposite the bar and also close to the fire is a posse of couches with cushions

and throws creating a lovely space to sip wine, read a book or chat and catch up with friends. The other half of the room is filled with tables and it is here that the Nelse crew caters to the needs of hungry guests. Having spent a convivial half an hour at the bar we find a seat in the meal area and our waitress Margy Furniss gives us an the insiders guide to the menu. Margy spends her summers in Pambula but she has spent many a winter previously at Nelse looking after guests and visitors alike. The menu is a tight offering of three entrees, three mains and three desserts - however this changes on a three-night rotation. Martin and Genevieve have found themselves a new chef, Amy Badcock who has previously worked in the NSW ski fields at Perisher. Amy’s menu is diverse enough to appeal to most palates, the choices are all guaranteed winter warmer favourites. We chose sweet potato croquettes and pumpkin and sage

ravioli for entrees and ordered a bottle of 3 Dark Horses 2016 Shiraz Grenache Touriga from McLaren Vale to complement our meal. The wine list is heavily weighted to Australian wines and why not when our local product is so good! Our main meal selections included a crispy skin salmon dish that was cooked to perfection and a mouth-watering Massaman beef curry. Luckily, we left room for dessert because Nelse does traditional winners such as sticky date pudding and panna cotta and they do them exceptionally well. If you are looking for a meal somewhere a bit quieter, that won’t break the bank, in a venue that feels a bit like someone’s cosy lounge room crossed with a good quality restaurant I can heartily recommend you try a lodge. As a start you could try Nelse – where else? • Kim McKeown

FALLS CREEK RACE CLUB Ripper Start

W

e’ve had a ripper of a start to the season, with Race Club starting on Saturday 30th June. With over 110 kids enrolled in programs it was an excited group of parents and athletes who gathered together at Race Club: kids excited to get back on snow with old and new friends, parents excited that they were getting five and a half hours to themselves every day for the next two weeks! The Club starts getting into Racing next week - kicking off with Snowracer on 7th July, the Rossignol Cup and Cranky Charlie on Friday 13 July (hopefully no one is superstitious), and the King of the Mountain on Saturday 14 July. That’s going to be a busy weekend! With Race Club’s major fundraiser for the year coming up on Sat 7th July, the Auction Committee lead by Nyree Fiddes has been busy visiting local and metropolitan

businesses asking for donations. The response has been extremely positive with the Committee raising over $20,000.00 of donations and more coming in every hour. For the first time this year the Race Club is posting details of the donations on its Facebook and Instagram pages, which is proving popular with people being able to see what will be available to bid on come 7:30pm on Saturday 7th July.

The Fundraising Auction is being held in the QT Boardroom, with catering by the wonderful Barry Iddles of Elk Restaurant, and three time Olympian and Race Club Life Member Steve Lee is returning as our Auctioneer Extraordinaire to run the Loud Auction. Steve Lee in full flight, both as a skier and as an auctioneer, is a sight to behold; he manages to keep the crowd laughing and bidding at the same time which any auctioneer will tell you is a nifty skill to master. As always, Race Club will be thanking our donors publically in this very paper so keep

FALLS CREEK RACE CLUB your eyes peeled to spot your business’s name next week. Tickets for this fabulous event are available online through Trybooking: https://www.trybooking.com/WHDW . Tickets are $30 per person, and include lots of Barry’s delicious food and drinks at Bar prices. Don’t forget to bring loads of CASH to the auction, as it’s our favourite method of payment (especially while Telstra is taking so long to connect our internet down at the clubhouse… but that is a story for another day). We’re doing drinks card again as they proved to be so very popular with both the punters and our fantastic Volunteers acting as Bar staff for the night. Drinks card can be paid for by EFTPOS with three and five drink cards available to purchase. As always, we’re happy to take cash at the Bar if that’s what you prefer. We run the auction every year as our primary fundraiser to raise money to cover the cost of running the club, pay for racing equipment and to pay for the coaches to travel with the squad to races at other mountains. People often think that the club must be rolling in money… because skiing is an expensive sport. But the truth is we run the Club on the smell of the proverbial oily rag. We don’t get any government funding, or have any private sponsorship deals and the money for the coaching programs is paid directly to the Lift company who employee the coaches, apart from a $110 Admin fee the Lift Company pays the Club per child. We make 7.2% profit on the sale of the Race Club Jackets and our membership fees are laughably low at $70 for the first adult member, $50 for the first child member and $30 for every

subsequent child. We refund the $300 working levy when parents complete a single volunteer duty. That is why every single donation to the auction is valuable and gratefully received. And it is why we try and raise around $30,000.00 in donations every year to convert into cash to keep the Club running for the next 12 months. So if you’d like to come along and help us to raise money to run the Club, book you ticket online through Trybooking: https://www.trybooking.com/WHDW . Everyone is welcome at the Auction, you don’t have to be a Race Club member to come along. It’s a great way to meet people if you are new to the mountain. • Cheers, from the Falls Creek Race Club committee.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Discover XC TV This week I’d like to speak a little bit about a media campaign I have been working on this past year with my goal being to encourage more involvement in the sport of cross country skiing in Australia. What have I done? In short, I have collaborated with a professional videographer to create a high quality video beginner series on ‘How to get started’ cross country skiing. I’m happy to announce it is out on Youtube now on the ‘ausxc’ youtube channel. I was inspired last year in June when I came across a couple of beginner skiers in the bowl one afternoon. I had a chat to the two ladies and learnt that for one of them it was her first time on skis and the other had been doing it for a year or so. were doing quite well but after speaking to them for a bit, it was clear that it was quite difficult to find information about how to get started cross country skiing, “We tried to search things on the internet but it was hard to find the right stuff.” Some classic rookie assumptions I noted were: “We were not sure if the skis have metal edges or not” – no they don’t, “We were wondering how many techniques there are and what are they” – two, classic and skating, “We didn’t really know what exercises to practice” – well there are a few, you can either get a lesson at Winder Corner or now just search for my video series on the ausxc Youtube.

This got me thinking, “what can I do?” There had recently been the launch of the DiscoverXCSki.com website which is very helpful but I thought it was missing some exciting video media. So I called up my new video friend called Mark Schmocker who was working at FoodWorks last year and I asked him whether he would be keen to help me film some good clips for DiscoverXC. We used National Team Athletes to be the actors, and throughout the video series of eight individual videos all around one to two minutes, we covered all aspects of getting started. From which equipment to use, what are the techniques it aims to cover - everything.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS So please check out the new videos on Youtube and recommend them to friends who are just getting started. I’m currently in the process of promoting them and setting up systems to allow their accessibility to people new to the sport. At the moment if you search something along the lines of ‘discover xc tv’ or ‘ausxc’ on YouTube you can find it. Also feel free to comment or make suggestions for their improvement; I’m always open for insights. •

Trail Report With about 70cm of snow before this weekend’s storm, the conditions are sublime for us XC skiers. The full Heathy’s Spur loop and the Park are now very much in the Groomer’s vocabulary. We’ve been doing a fair bit of Sun Valley, Heathy Spur and the Inner Trails this past week on the National Junior Training Camp. The Groomer has also been doing a good job in making sure the tracks are nice and firm so that my Poles do not dig in to the snow. Look forward to the storm of snow this weekend, hopefully after another 20-40cm the whole Trail network will open up so everyone can start practicing their Hoppet laps. •

What’s coming up? In terms of racing and events, Fast and Female is Saturday the 7th at the Nordic Bowl at 10am. This is a female only event and is basically a way for people to meet and have a bit of fun on the xc boards while doing some drills and stuff. The Sunday 8th of July is the Birkebeiner Classic 2.5/5/10km at 10:30am in the Nordic Bowl. This has been a ‘classic’ one to do for a long time and the Birkebeiner Ski Club to a great job putting this one on, - see you there. The following weekend is the High Plains Tour (skate 5/10km) on Saturday the 14th with the Howman’s Gap Vic Relay Champs on the Sunday 15th. Some good racing coming up then.

Discover XC TV will help you to also get involved in Australia’s greatest ski race – as can be seen by the crowd in last year’s Joey Hoppet. Pic – Courtesy the KH Committee.

take part during the week. The camp was a blast and a great team spirit permeated the group. The team is currently focusing on National Champs which are to be held in Perisher Valley on the 21st and 22nd of July this month and the National Junior Championships which are a week later again in Perisher. Go team. • A quick look at the Discover XC TV is quite good and a credit to the team that put it together. ED.

The Australian Junior National Team has just finished their annual Winter training camp here at Falls Creek. The camp went from Sunday the 1st to Friday the 6th of July and had 16 athletes from ages 16 to 22

Not only are our committee members volunteers but so are all of the individuals that look after the museum six days a week during the ski season. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and undertake many diverse roles within the village. We truly appreciate the time that they give us in the museum from their busy lives. This year we have retired doctor Leo, Schuss Lodge manager Meryl, apartment owner Di, Margy and Jo from Resort Management who help out on their days off, club member Cathy from Camber Lodge, long term Falls Creek member Karen H and of course Noelene who came to Falls Creek in the late 50’s and who has contributed so much to the Falls Creek Community. OUR COMMUNITY …And its People

T

his week I caught up with Davide Angelini, on his property in Tawonga where he grows Japanesestyle green tea. TW: “Davide, when people think of tea they usually picture warm climates in the hills of Sri Lanka, India or China. How did you start growing tea in the Kiewa Valley?” Davide: “A Japanese tea company came door-knocking in the early 2000s, offering a pretty solid contract to give it a go. Green tea is gaining in popularity for its health benefits, and Australia has an extremely ‘green’ name - especially in Asia - so the company wanted to expand into Australia to harvest tea in their off-season, as well as selling an ‘Australian-grown’ product.” “And if you look at where the tea is grown in Japan, it’s actually at a similar latitude.” TW: “So what makes this tea different?” Davide: “Exactly where it grows. Sri Lankan, Indian teas – the plant is the same (camellia sinensis) – but in those locations it grows constantly, prolifically. In this climate it stops growing in the winter, it rests and accumulates the unique flavours and nutrients. When it starts growing again, it really grows well.”

“When people drink this tea they say, “Wow, it’s Japanese – it’s like being in Japan.” You don’t get that in your supermarket green teas.”

TW: “What do you like about this farming?”

TW: “How did you end up here in Tawonga? Where did you grow up?”

Davide: “Not many people have the opportunity to work in this office, with the highest peak in Victoria, Mount Bogong, right there.”

Davide: “My parents are both from a small town in north-east Italy, and they migrated in the 1950s while in their twenties. Dad happily built quite a few footpaths down in Melbourne for a year, but then he said ‘Look, if I’m doing this I might as well go back to Italy.”

“I also work for AGL. I have been for the past four years. AGL is good to work for. The big thing for a lot of farmers is that I’d be here by myself, and you need that social interaction, so working gives me that, otherwise I’d be down here going stir crazy talking to my imaginary friends.”

“But by that time there were a lot of farmers in Myrtleford and Whorouly growing tobacco, and he went up there and did tobacco share farming, and then called Mum over from Italy to get married. They bought up here in the late 1960s, moved to this property in 1975 and grew tobacco till the mid 1990’s. Now we’ve grown tea since 2002.”

“Apart from work, I’m pretty much into soccer with the kids. I’ll be chasing them around. Both of them like their mountain bikes and skiing, and fishing. I’m an avid dirt-bike rider, that’s what I do. I like being outside, out in the bush, hunting, fishing, camping - just being part of the earth.”

“I grew up here. I know every bit of the farm inside out. This is my spiritual home. My wife Erin and I have two boys and I want it to be the same thing for them.”

Davide’s tea label is the Alpine Tea Company, and can be purchased at his website or at the Mount Beauty Visitor Information Centre. “Thanks Davide, we appreciate your time!” • Struan Jones

Chair photos: 8:45 to 10:30am!

“I have three harvests per year: the first week in November, between Christmas and New Year, and late February/early March. In between that there is irrigation and fertilising.” “We produce it, and it gets steamed and rolled to about 5% moisture content. Then it gets shipped to Japan and processed into tea products – boutique loose-leaf tea, bottled tea, and tea bags.”

here are lots and lots of reasons that people decide to visit Falls Creek. The absolute beauty of the Bogong High Plains in summer is a major reason – but that is another beautiful story much worth investigating. Falls Creek as a winter holiday destination has heaps going for it. Not only does it have heaps of wonderful skiing (and boarding) terrain, it has a fabulous integration of ski slopes, the unique ski in – ski out facility – from your accommodation to the slopes and back again, and what we term a range of progression perfect slopes. That means that from the beginners’ areas, it is not a challenge to find the next step up to a slightly more challenging slope. People find it easy to get around and enjoy their experience.

Comfort, security, safety and enjoyment are yours for the taking when you book your travel to Falls Creek on one of these fabulous coaches. Pic – Courtesy Falls Creek Coach Service

FORGET THE FUSS Well Falls Creek is serviced by a very good alpine road. But like any alpine road it has its issues. And when you are travelling here for a well-earned holiday do you really want to tackle the issues that sometimes we are faced with on the road. Snow – lots of it – enough to block the road. Black Ice – you can’t see it and when you do feel it, it is usually too late! Falling trees, vermin deer – big ones, plus our local kangaroos and wombats. All of these issues can absolutely ruin a holiday. Even then, if you feel confident enough to drive up the road, you still have to deal with the issues of anti-freeze for the radiator, Alpine Mix diesel for all diesel vehicles (diesel fuel clags up in cold conditions), wheel chains (and how to fit them) and then getting your car parked in Falls Creek. You know, there is an easier way. And the secret is in the heading for this article. Forget the Fuss – Take the Bus. Fallon’s Falls Creek Coaches have been here for years. And before them we had the Pyle family – and these operators have untold

years of experience in getting our visitors to and from the snow safely – in the comfort of a well-appointed warm, clean dry coach – under the stewardship of a driver who has done the Hazardous Area Driver training – and who has been travelling up and down the road all season – and probably for the last umpteen years. Falls Creek Coach Service offers regular services from Melbourne, (airport and rail), from Albury (airport and rail) and also a regular service up and down the hill – all designed to fit in with the rail and plane services that you are likely to take to get here. Another option could be to book a private transfer for yourself and your family in either of their luxury vehicles including the new 16 seat Mercedes that will arrive this week. If you do decide to drive towards Falls Creek, the smart move would be to park your car in the secure carpark at the Falls Creek Coach Service depot in Tawonga South and take the bus from here.

Yes there are lots of reasons to take the base to Falls Creek. Safety, comfort, ease, no fuss - and remember, you are on holidays. Enjoy every moment of the time. Google Falls Creek Coach Service for all the details, timetable and bookings. •

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Snow Ski Apartment 7

the new up-market Frying Pan Inn. The Village Bowl area is also served by two very good ski/board hire and retail outlets.

T

his two bedroom, one bathroom apartment is in excellent condition. Apartment 7 has easy access and is situated in a fantastic location in the village bowl with brilliant ski in and ski out access. The Snow Ski Apartment complex is wellmanaged and has a new long alpine head lease.

In the summer months, (we describe as everything not winter), the location can be easily accessed by car with adequate parking out front or nearby. While the quality of your enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village.

On entry there is a large drying cupboard and ski entrance room. The open plan living, fully self-contained kitchen with new oven and dining area has large double glazed widows looking out towards the Gully Chairlift.

Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with some being accessed from the Village Bowl. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot, on a horse or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria.

The apartment is a single level unit and features two bedrooms one with a trilogy bed and the other with a double bed. There is a separate shower and the bathroom has a well-equipped laundry and separate toilet. The Village Bowl area has had dramatic upgrades over the past few years. This year the new Eagle Express high speed detachable quad chairlift is operating and just happens to be directly outside the Snow Ski complex. Put your skis or board on at the Snow Ski ramp and one push and you’re at the Eagle. Another aspect is the comprehensive list of services and facilities provided in the Village Bowl. Several restaurant and dining venues like BE Foodstore, Falls Creek Hotel, Easy Eats and

The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes the Alpine Challenge, the Mile High Dragon Boats, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the Easter Festival as well as regular mountain bike shuttles.

Great location at the top of the Gully Chair... with good views...and cosy open plan living area. Pic – Courtesy the Agent

For further information please contact the agent: Christa Smit (Zirknitzer), Zirky Real Estate, Mb: 0402 277 808. •

At $240,000, this apartment is definitely worth looking at.
