ho can remember the ‘Do the right thing’ ads of the 70’s & 80’s which compelled people to put their rubbish in bins and ‘Keep Australia Beautiful?’ Apart from showing your age if you do remember, I suspect you are just as stunned as I am regards how quickly that message has been lost given the amount of debris that is left in car parks and communal areas at the resort. Rubbish, litter, trash, garbage… call it what you might. In this pristine alpine environment, failure to properly dispose of it – i.e. put it in one of the more than 60 bins or rubbish receptacles throughout the village, has consequences that bear some consideration and perhaps prompt you to think before you inadvertently drop that piece of litter!

FROM THE CEO you’ve inhaled that last toxic plume, by consequence impacts those of us who choose not to smoke, and the environment ultimately bears the brunt of this act of irresponsibility. Think before your flick. Or better still – go here and get responsible for your butts; http://www.buttfree.org.au/ products/ashtrays-butt-holders/ What is more, under the Litter Act 1979, dropping a butt (or any rubbish for that matter) can result in a $200 fine for incorrect disposal. Managed to steel a few ribs off the plate next door, which were just as divine… add to this, the great local wine list and the cosy lounge/bar…it’s a winner, book yourself in for a treat and after dinner drink by the fire. Now, with the resort snow pack the best it’s been since 2004, get out there and have some fun. • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management
So, please… help us protect our very fragile alpine environment by doing the right thing, every little bit helps - because the alternative may have to be a smoke free resort, just like a growing number of resorts around the world - and pretty much like any patrolled beach in Australia (or the MCG for the matter)! Ok, let’s move on and discuss another favourite topic…Falls Creek Restaurants… WOW are we spoiled. This weeks “Foodie Tip of the Week” – Nelse Lodge. A group of mates from Adelaide were staying there (and loved it – all were first timers to the resort and now converted to FallsCreekians), so we decided to dine with them. Awesome choice. DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA DWA Snowboarder Camp
D
WA organised a Snowboarder Camp for the 2018 season and Falls Creek delivered what all skiers and snowboarders wait for and that was a beautiful dump of powder. After 7cm of snow fell Friday afternoon and Friday night, then adding to an existing base and delivering 100cm of snow over the whole mountain on Saturday morning. How good is this? The DWA Snowboarder Camp started on Saturday and consisted of 13 snowboarders and two skiers including guides with offsnow support. The youngest snowboarder was Trevor at nine years of age, who for the first time, was enjoying the freedom that riding delivers. Ethan, his brother was back from the DSR Camp two weeks prior ready to take up the challenge of linked turns with a prosthetic once again. Ethan completed the goal and late on Sunday
could be seen with the DWA Trainer Fraser riding down Main Street linking his turns. A tremendous effort. The other DWA riders all had large improvements with Jack following his DWA guide Chris over to Ruined Castle and carving down the run. Jason also continued to improve with determination to complete toe to heel transition wanting to impress his two Snowboarder guides Julia and Katerina and that he certainly did by Sunday, receiving a fabulous round of applause. Rebecca with Dan as her guide from Mount Beauty on Saturday and Sunday conquered turning and stopping and achieved her goal for the weekend, another personal best. By Sunday the DWA Snowboarders had completed and achieved their goals and had fun with their guides along the way - all being very aware that more practice is required to become proficient

at snowboarding. As with all skiing and snowboarding stance is critical to a skier or snowboarder and with a prosthetic, the choice of a stance should relate to the participant’s balance, or how far the body can move without losing stability. Retaining balance is accomplished by adjustments to the ankles, knees, hips, and entire body with consideration given as to whether the student uses the ankle or knee as the primary flexing joint. The team at Disabled Wintersport Australia have found that most participants - children or adults - with physical and cognitive disabilities can experience the fun of snowboarding with the proper preparation and equipment. And, like teaching any snow discipline, teaching an adaptive sport requires safety for both the student and the other skiers and riders on the mountain and is the foremost consideration. To date, this year, our camps have been positive and rewarding for everyone involved. If you would like to know more about DWA, or would like to volunteers, visit the website at: www. disabledwintersport.com.au. • Ken Payne

long day on the slopes can be tough on the body and certainly helps work up an appetite. Fortunately, you can simply drop by one of Falls Creek’s newest additions, Lilli Pilli Day Spa and Tea Rooms for a little pampering and a bite to eat - and be ready for round two on the mountain!
When it comes to a little pampering, Hayley is your girl, delivering rejuvenating facials and spa treatments, as well as waxing, nails, beauty and tanning (because you have to sort out that goggle tan somehow!)

Owner, Emma Phyland, is no stranger to the village. She started out working as a chef in Falls Creek, but her knack for mixing ingredients soon turned to beauty products. “I started making face creams - kind of like making mayonnaise - and that’s when the organic touch skincare range began,” Emma laughed. “I then studied massage while pregnant with my gorgeous Georgie, and have now been massaging at Falls Creek for 11 years.” Having worked with Barry Jones at Pretty Valley for a decade, Emma said the duo has been trying to get a day spa up and running for the past four years.
Keeping you fuelled in the cafe and tea house are Tiah, Sheridan and Tash, who keep things running smoothly both front and back of house. They serve locally roasted Bogong Blend coffee from Honeybird Coffee, along with 22 blends of tea from the Tea Tonic range, designed by a herbalist for its therapeutic qualities. The ultimate place to relax and unwind, you can also enjoy delicious food to warm the belly, including ‘posh’ toasties and exotic soups, with plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free treats and feasts available.

When she’s not creating luxurious new beauty products, Emma is your go-to for needling, cupping, remedial massage and relaxing hot stone treatments. The amazing Abby, who is now in her second year at Falls Creek (thanks to her new found passion for snowboarding), offers remedial massage - with just a little bit of sweet pain when it’s needed - as well as relaxing and rejuvenating massages and spa treatments. She also has personalised the traditional Chinese cupping facials to lift and plump your skin. erni Haider is the Head Coach of the Falls Creek Race Club. He’d had long day of individual skills analysis on-snow for the club’s holiday programme, after which I caught up with him in his apartment which he shares with four other coaches.
Berni is young, athletic, friendly, and speaks with an Austrian accent. I ask him about his role at Falls Creek. “I’ve been here for two and a half seasons now. The first year I worked with the under 14s and under 16s, and in the middle of that season I took over the FIS Group, and from then on I’ve worked with them.” FIS stands for the Fédération Internationale de Ski, the world’s highest governing body for international winter sports. The FIS group at the Race Club is comprised of skiers aged 15 and above who have shown real talent in the slalom and giant slalom race disciplines. WINTER “These are the bestEDITION racers” saysONE Haider. “Race club starts the age of seven and by ADatPROOF Under 12 there is one full-time group that trains year-round. We’ve just completed our July holiday programme where we
trained 110 athletes with 16 coaches for six hours a day. We have one day off per week. After the holiday programme we start the full-time groups, which train seven days a week.”
Haider is only 22 years old and into his third season at Falls Creek. It’s hard to comprehend just how much skiing he’s done in a short time. I ask him how he got started in Australia.
As the Head Coach, Berni spends almost as many waking hours on snow as off. “I’m on snow at 8am, setting up a course. We have some warm-up runs then start training. It will depend on what the focus for the training is, and we work on that. We train till 12noon, and then have a one-hour lunch break. In the afternoon we go to the gym and work there on the athletic side, such as strength, conditioning, agility, and coordination.”
“That’s funny” he said “when I worked in Kitzsteinhorn there was an English skier who had worked in Australia for eight years, and he asked me if I wanted to come down. I always wanted to get experience skiing in another country. I like the village, the ski-in ski-out and also the social life is pretty good. It’s just a nice atmosphere up here. And also the skiing area is great.”
Like many Austrians, Haider grew up on snow. “I come from Ellmau in the Eastern part of Austria. It’s a really big skiing area and I started skiing when I was two. A couple of metres behind my house is a ski slope, so it was a pretty good place to learn.”
FRIDAY 91H JUNE 2017
“I was in the local race club there until I was 12. In Austria we’ve got states - it’s called bundesländer - and in those states there are different squads you can go to for training. I trained there till the age of 15. Then I went to a high school that focused on skiing. I was there for five years, and basically Monday and Tuesday is school, but Wednesday to Sunday is skiing training and racing.”
“When I finished school I was pretty good, but I wasn’t in the Austrian National Team. I was just one step below in the state squad Open Seven Days - 5pm ‘til Late from Tyrol, for three years. Falls Creek seems to have an Austrian connection. Of the 16 coaches at the Race Club, most are Austrian. “There was one guy - Rudy Pendl, a long-time instructor - I think he was the first Austrian who came here and he built everything up. Since then it’s kind of expected that there are so many Austrians here at Falls Creek. It’s all about connections in skiing. There are mostly Austrians at Mount Buller and Falls Creek, but at Perisher, most of the coaches are French or Italians. In Austria when you ask someone where they want to go in the Southern Hemisphere, everyone wants to go to Falls Creek or Mount Buller, because they’re the most famous ones.” Falls Creek will hold two days of international FIS slalom races on August 17th and 18th. Haider estimates between 50 -70 starters, with up to 20 athletes coming from New Zealand, Europe and England. Registration is open to anyone, but Haider warns you must be an advanced skier otherwise “you will kill yourself.”
26TH JUNE 2015 He is optimistic about the future of the
Race Club. “Each year it is getting better, it’s becoming bigger and there are more athletes registering for the programme. We are always improving and growing.” • Struan Jones

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN INTERSCHOOLS It’s A Wrap
Secondary Boys. St Peters College took out the Primary Boys championship.
outh Aussies love to ski at Falls Creek! 205 children plus a load of parents, teachers and other family members came to Falls for the SA Interschools Championships from 16th WINTER EDITION FIVE to 20th July. Some great weather, if a bit blowy on the race days, made it a fantastic PROOF week, along AD with the usual fantastic Falls Creek welcome from the local community and businesses.
A special shout out to local legend Steve Lee for presenting medals and trophies. What a thrill for the young athletes!
There was an increase in participation of around 28% compared to 2017 demonstrating the growing enthusiasm for ski and snowboard racing amongst SA kids.
SASKI would like to thank all of our brilliant Falls Creek sponsors and supporters: our major sponsors Falls Creek Resort Management Board, Falls Creek Ski Lifts P/L and the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce; our auction donors Astra Lodge, Summit Ridge, Elk at Falls and Falls Creek Hotel; and our SA Interschools discount deal providers Central Snowspots, The Pass, SnoNuts, Yogi’s Ski Hire, Blue Brumby, BE Food Store, Dicky Knees and

The races themselves ran smoothly and saw some really good performances from a number of athletes. With an increased number of schools putting together full teams at different year levels, there was healthy competition for the overall school champions, especially at secondary school level. In the end Cornerstone College managed to hold onto their champion status for both Secondary Girls and

FALLS CREEK RACE CLUB Racing and Results
S
chool holidays were a busy period for most parents in Race Club, with three races occurring across the two weeks. As reported a few weeks ago, we kicked off with the Snowracer 1 Series on Saturday 7th July, quickly followed by the Rossignol Cup and Cranky Charlie Cup on Friday 13th and the King of the Mountain Race on Saturday 14th July. There were lots of eager little faces, as well as some more serious faces from the older athletes, on the morning of the races. Kids were keen to break out their race suits in an attempt to shave a second or two off their times in the hope of a podium place, while parents secretly thanked the weather gods for turning on beautiful blue sky days so said kids didn’t freeze while waiting to race.

The Rossignol Cup and Cranky Charlie Cup only happen with the assistance of parents working in collaboration with the Race and Events Department. The Race Club committee and members would like to sincerely thank Andrew Wenk for taking charge of the volunteers and for being the Club’s Chief of Gates (a technical term) for one last time. Andrew has fulfilled this role for around a decade and is now handing the baton on so he can taking up more
responsibilities with SASKI. The committee would also like to thank club members Rob Ashton, Carl Crosby, Jocelyn Kawana, Jamie Dean, Daniella Mollica, Peter Howlett, Richard Jowett, Nic Kemp, Karen Smythe, Scott Wells, Rohan France, Russell Grant and Alana Wright for volunteering their time to ensure the Rossi Cup happened. New App Tracks XC Groomer Falls Creek Cross Country at Windy Corner has a new app for your phone or tablet that tracks the real-time progress of the groomer. The app to download is called ‘Track My Ride.’ It uses a GPS tracker placed inside the cross-country groomer that shows on a satellite map exactly where the groomer is, where he’s heading, and where he’s been for the past 24 hours. For cross-country skiers looking for the fastest and smoothest trails, this information is invaluable. You can now literally ski behind the groomer on the freshest corduroy. The specific program on the App is called XCY, and you’ll have to drop in and speak to the team at Falls Creek Cross Country to obtain log-in details. To make up the cost of the GPS tracker, there is a once-off $15 fee, and along with the App you’ll receive nightly emails detailing the groomer’s plans for the next 24 hours, to help you decide which direction you’ll head out first thing the next day. It’s a great tool, and is all about helping cross-country skiers have the best possible time out on the High Plains. •

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS New Babies at Falls Creek
I
s there such thing as a new baby? I’ll let that sit for a bit. This week (and for next week too) I spoke to Mount Beauty’s latest family and prominent XC ski duo Robert Jones and Jess Millett-Riley. These two had their first child a few of weeks ago. Their responses were so well put together that I think it is better to leave as is. TW: “I understand you are a new father, who is the child?” Rob: “The beast of burden (eg our daughter) is Saskia Madeleine Jones, born only three weeks ago.” TW: “How has the first stage of parenting been on your elite sleep cycle and performance?” Rob: “Although I have been getting a bit less sleep, the rigours of parenthood are nothing for me compared to Saskia’s lovely mother as I am in no position to be able to feed her. In saying that, I have noticed my racing performance has
dropped slightly from average to sub-par.” TW: “Is getting out for a ski like an escape?” Rob: “No, I am always keen to get home and spend time with Saskia and Jess. I guess I am just lucky to have skiing as my job.” TW: “How do you find the time to go skiing? Rob: “Well the above answer sure answers that, but I have managed to sneak in the odd race and interval session whenever I can. I need to ensure that the dad-bod doesn’t hit me too early in my fatherly life.” TW: “Jess, when will you take the baby in the baby ski pram? Jess: “Well it is recommended for babies not to be in the ‘pulk’ until they are at least nine months old. But in saying that, hopefully by late August, early September Saskia and I can go out and enjoy a ski together. TW: “What age is the right age for the baby to start skiing themselves?” Rob: “Well in my coach’s mind, Saskia should first get a little slide perhaps in her second year of life, but maybe by 3-4 years old she can get out there on her own steam at least for a few hundred meters at a time.”
Welcome to 2038 Olympian, Saskia Madeleine Jones. Pic – Courtesy the family.
TW: “Hypothetically would you be able to be a full time athlete as well as father? Rob: “I think it is possible, but I also think it would be pretty tough, not only on me, but on the whole family. Looking and seeing how some mothers on the World Cup do it (Kikkan Randall and Marit Bjorgen), I now have an incredibly new appreciation for their work ethic.” TW: “Do you think it would be cool to set the baby on track to be a ski superstar? Rob: “Well of course! You will see Saskia

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS on the podium at the 2038 Olympics! But really, Jess and I just hope that Saskia can have the opportunity to experience the joy of skiing and be part of an amazing community, no matter her goals or performance.” TW: “Do you speak any other languages at home with the child and hope she learns?” Rob: “No, my language skills are limited to rudimentary English. I would love to expose Saskia to another language as I think it is an amazing asset to have. Of course she will learn some of the key Norwegian basics, such as Heia and Jaevla bra.” TW: “Jess, how has the birth of a child impacted your ski technique? Jess: “Too early to tell, but despite the loss of core strength, if I can give birth, I am sure that I can put myself into the pain cave even deeper in the Hoppet now.” TW: “What’s the funniest/cutest thing Saskia has done so far?” Rob: “Saskia is a bit of a methane machine, so funniest would have to be her farts, but the cutest thing is when she stretches after waking up.”
Race Reports from last weekend Last weekend we had two pretty major PRICELESS championships. There was the Victorian Junior Champs which were held here at Falls Creek and the Australian Senior Nationals Championships which were held in Perisher Valley. Perisher played host to a competitive field across two days of Nationals Champs racing. In the Sprint event on Saturday, Dual Olympian Phil Bellingham defended his 2017 sprint title with the win ahead of Callum Watson and Seve de Campo. American Chelsea Moore took out the women’s sprint event ahead of Kat Paul and Darcie Morton. The 10km and 15km events on the Sunday were won by in-form Callum Watson ahead of coach Valerio Leccardi racing for Switzerland and Phil Bellingham in third place.
In the Vic Junior Champs, in the Sprint on Saturday, Leila Pammer won the U20 WINTER women’s title, EDITION with Lucas SEVENTEEN Rumberg taking out the men’s. John Mordes and Lily AD PROOF Murnane won the U16, Elle Sankey and Jayden Spring won the U14, and Rosie Franzke and Isaac Spring both won the U12 categories. The Sunday was the distance event. The U20 7.5km was won by Liam Flanagan and the U20 5km women’s event was won by Leila Pammer. John Mordes won the 5km boys and Lily Murnane won the 3.5km women’s - both for U16 age group. Jayden Spring, Gabrielle Baines were the winners for the U14 distance which was 2.5km and Eli Spring and Isaac Spring won the 1km event for U12 skiers. • Seve de Campo

TW: “For both, how would you rate Mount Beauty as a place to raise a family?” Jess & Rob: “Easily a 10/10. Amazingly clean air, best skiing in Australia, beautiful mountains and a fantastic community. Really, it is amazing there aren’t more people moving here!”

FALL LINES Michelin Star chef Toby Burrowes
T
he team at Astra Lodge are always striving to deliver the best experience possible. Because of this, Astra has been named Australia Best Boutique hotel two years in a row and is now nominated for a 3rd year. Last winter, Astra re-introduced chef Toby Burrowes to Falls creek. Burrowes, currently 27 years of age, spent some of his formative years in Falls Creek from the age of 18 and from there has catapulted his skill level and career. Burrows currently resides and works in London where is has very fast gained a name for himself. Under acclaimed British chef Phil Howard’s stewardship, Burrowes has been appointed to captain the team at Elystan Street restaurant. The successful teaming of Burrowes and Howard has lead the restaurant to achieve - in just over a year of trading - a Michelin Star in the 2018 Michelin UK & Ireland Guide; the AA Restaurant of the Year in London 2018, three AA Rosettes in the AA Restaurant Guide 2018, and Square Meal’s Award for Best New Restaurant 2016. In addition to this, Toby has been included in Code Hospitality Magazine’s annual ‘30 under 30.’
In August last year, Toby’s guest appearance saw him very quickly making a name for himself around the resort, selling out Astra restaurant each night for two weeks. For Astra proprietors Seumas Dawes & Rosy Seaton, the offer to have him back to showcase his skills was received with a very quick yes! Toby’s plan for his secondment from Elystan Street to Astra is to compliment the amazing work of Astra’s

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Snow Ski 40
In the summer months, (we describe as everything not winter), the location can be easily accessed by car with adequate parking out front or nearby.
S
now Ski Apartment 40 is a single level fully self-contained two bedroom, two bathroom apartment. This apartment is spacious and has fantastic views of the ski runs and Summit area from the light open plan living area and private balcony. This apartment has been recently refurbished.
While the quality of your enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village. Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with some being accessed from the Village Bowl. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot, on a horse or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria.
True ski-in ski-out Snow Ski Apartments offer the ideal location in Falls Creek. Being in the heart of the Village Bowl, this complex is next to major ski lifts, (the Gully Chair from the car-park, Summit Chair and the new Eagle Express), ski hires, ski shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and a lift ticket office. This apartment boasts spectacular vistas of the snowfields and bowl area. Apartment 40 features quality furnishings and a well-appointed kitchen, large open plan living and dining area, good sized laundry and drying cupboard plus a very large ski locker and owner lock away storage area (approx. 3m x 6m with fridges, wine racks, ski storage areas).
The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes the Alpine Challenge, the Mile High Dragon Boats, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the Easter Festival as well as regular mountain bike shuttles.
This apartment is HUGE for a two bedroom unit and has very easy to access with minimal stairs and a stunning view makes this apartment a must to inspect. The configuration of this apartment is one queen bed & four singles (two bunks) and two bathrooms.
With all this to attract a buyer, this property should not remain on the market for very long. At only $400,000 you should book an inspection today. Contact Christa Zirknitzer, Zirky Real Estate, Mb: 0402 277 808. •
An ideal location, with a large living area and great views of the slopes. Pics – Courtesy the Agent
