hat a trifecta, does it get any better? Well, at least at the time of writing I can rely on Spring skiing, Sunday 2nd of September being Father’s Day and, if we get some freshies, that will be a bonus. This weekend’s forecast is certainly looking promising, with most weather aficionados predicting up to 40cm of the fresh stuff. So, fingers crossed the weekend is looking like a ripper and we’ll be able to report on 2018 being the 3rd best season, snow depth wise, in the last 30 years. Skiing in September is one of the best times to visit any mountain. The snow is at or just hit peak levels, the sun usually shines more

Both trophies are back in their places, proudly displayed on show at the Falls Creek Primary School… along with a heap of very happy kids and school teachers! DISABLED WINTERPSORT AUSTRALIA Members Sit Ski Camp

T

he DWA Sit Ski Camp was a one of firsts for DWA last weekend. Grant - who grew up skiing but had never been on a sit ski until the weekend - took up the challenge and mastered a mono sit ski over the weekend, something which is rare in the sit ski world. Tony was next on a dual sit ski and running independently with his guide Phil and snowboarding friend Trent down Main Street on Saturday and Sunday. Glen went onto the dual sit ski and worked on initiating his turns and tethering for speed control through a variety of different terrains. In the background - biding their time - DWA had the two speed demons Renee (middle name ‘Faster’) and Laurence signalling more was expected on every run. The decision was then made that on Sunday we would try a different challenge and combine a new skill with fun.

3pm - 5:30pm

FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL!

$65 three course meal per father!

The new skill was to utilise a drag lift ‘Poma’ with a sit ski. What you say “not possible!” Falls Creek Ski Lifts lead the way and took up the challenge - assisting the DWA Sit Ski Camp by working with the DWA team on Monkey Bar and attaching sit skis to a poma. With a few quick calls to the lift operation supervisors and then continued assistance from the Monkey Bar lift operators Lachie and Raymond, DWA where given the OK to proceed. The process is not new to Falls Creek, but it is an option not tried for several years at the resort. There were a few missed pomas but after Kylie and Jeff from DWA gained experience with D-Man from the Falls Creek Ski School, all sit skis started to climb up Monkey Bar and then detached safely and they were ready to go. Excitement continued as both sit skis moved into the starting position at the top of Monkey Bar. It was then that the friendly race between the two DWA sit ski participants Laurence and Renee began! It was a close finish as the video link shows with the outcome going to Laurence just winning the race by a ski tip.

Laurence and Renee with D-Man and Jeff after the race down Playgound after riding the Monkey Bar Poma. Pic – Courtesy DWA.

Not many skiers or riders have ever seen sit skis on a poma in Australia or overseas and this caused several onlookers to stare in wonder and amazement at how sit skis can utilise a drag lift. The sit ski has an extra tether strap, about 3 metres long attached to the bucket at the outside of the knees on both sides. As the Poma passes, the guide or skier grabs the platter for a second then loops the tether around the platter. At the top the guide or skier dismounts by pulling on a quick release shackle where the tether attaches to the right side of the bucket. Finally, the guide or skier gathers back the tether loop and bundles it under their jacket, so that it doesn’t get in the way while skiing. It was a great weekend of firsts for DWA participants who once again gave their all and tested and pushed themselves to their limits. A huge thanks must go to Falls Creek Lift Company and Falls Creek Ski School for their continued support of DWA and the acceptance of adapting to the challenges DWA present. • Ken Payne

LIGHT THE NIGHT For The Leukaemia Foundation

R

ight now, more than 60,000 Australians are living with a cancer or related disorders.

More research into understanding the causes, better treatments and cure for blood cancer is urgently needed. The Leukaemia Foundation hosts ‘Light The Night’ events to bring awareness to the plight of these brave sufferers and raise funds for services and support to help them beat this devastating disease. This Saturday September 1st Falls Creek will host its 5th official ‘Light The Night’ event with a touching lantern ski down Wombats Ramble (Australia’s longest green ski run). By purchasing and carrying a lantern, Falls Creek staff, locals and visitors alike will pay tribute to those currently battling or have fallen to the disease. Over $13,000 has been cumulatively raised through donations and lantern purchases since the first event in 2014 and organisers hope to break the $18,000 mark in 2018.

Resort Management Marketing Manager, Jo Prothero, says “It’s incredible to do our bit in supporting the foundation with their efforts. Even if it is just a donation of $5, every little bit helps and goes towards helping those who really need it.” “The lantern ski in itself is a sight to see with over 150 skiers and snowboarders snaking down Wombats Ramble under lights, holding their lanterns high. Being a part of the group and seeing the different colours of lanterns for those supporting, remembering or currently suffering is quite

FALLS FREESTYLE Nitro Good Times

F

alls Creek just experienced the Nitro Takeover as the international team descended on the resort to conduct their ‘Good Times’ weekends and shoot for their international catalogue. It was quite the spectacle to see with team riders, Marcus Kleveland, Sam Taxwood, Torgier Bergman, Elias Eldhart, Sven Thorgren, Christy Prior and Zoi SadowskiSynnott all in attendance. The team were blessed with some of the best powder, rivalling that of even our Japanese counterparts, then sunshine and a perfectly manicured park to showcase these absolute legends of our sport. Thursday night saw the entire team make a guest appearance at the last Night Show of the season, much to everyone’s delight. There were more backflips than could be counted on one hand! Parties at Stingray were held so everyone got to meet their snowboard hero’s. It was Good Times all round!

the crew took some laps around the hill and shot some incredible photos with Sean ‘Radman’ Radich. Stoke levels were high as the girls got to not only ride with Christy but also see how a professional photo shoot was conducted. Lots of communication is required between the riders and photographers, and cooperation with the weather was paramount but we got the shot! • Sue Wharekawa (She Shreds Community) This Weekend’s BIG! We have a big weekend coming up in events, with ‘Storm the Castle’ on Saturday 1st and the Bandwagon Banked Slalom on Sunday 2nd of September! Storm the Castle is Falls Creeks Biggest Slopestyle event, This annual contest provides freestyle athletes the opportunity to jump and jib their way to $500 for first place plus a bar tab and huge gear give away’ s. This popular spectator event draws a huge crowd that is followed by the presentation ceremony and a jumping after party hosted by QT Stingray Lounge. 2018 KANGAROO HOPPET Another Fantastic Event

T

he 2018 Australian winter has been amazing for many reasons - and it was no exception for the 28th Kangaroo Hoppet at Falls Creek last Saturday. Over 1,000 skiers from 24 countries took part in what is the largest international ski event in the southern hemisphere. In the 42km premier event 2018 Winter Olympian Barbara Jezeršek from Sydney made it back to back Hoppet victories, while Swiss national and Mount Beauty local Valerio Leccardi won his 4th Hoppet in nine years. The Kangaroo Hoppet is the Australian leg of the Worldloppet series of international ski marathons, which encompasses 20 events from 20 countries across the world.

Steady snowfalls in recent weeks have seen the Falls Creek snow base exceed two metres, while recent sunny days and cold nights made for well packed ski tracks and great racing conditions across the stunning Bogong High Plains. The current Australian national team coach (and husband of former Hoppet winner and three-time Winter Olympian Esther Bottomley), Leccardi won ahead of twotime Winter Olympians Phillip Bellingham from Mount Beauty and Callum Watson from Sydney. Joining Jezeršek on the women’s podium were Aurélie Dabudyk from France and Cambria McDermott from the USA - both of whom who have been ski instructing and coaching at Falls Creek throughout the winter. Jezeršek, Dabudyk and McDermott broke away from the rest of the women’s field early on, until Jezersek put her foot down up ‘The Paralyser’ onto the Bogong High Plains and skied away solo. Dabudyk and McDermott also skied most of the rest of the race by themselves. Jezeršek won her first Hoppet in 2017 after becoming an Australian citizen in late 2016. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Jezeršek and team-mate Jessica Yeaton achieved Australia’s best cross country skiing result 12th in the Team Sprint event. In the men’s event a pack of six formed early on, before Watson picked up the pace and dropped all but Leccardi and Bellingham. However the effort took its toll and Watson was the next to lose contact at the front. Leccardi made a decisive move away from Bellingham as they returned from Sun Valley the second time, and finished strongly for his first Hoppet victory since 2015. In the 21km Australian Birkebeiner event the female and male winners were Darcie

It was a tough race but my skis were excellent and the tactics were good for me today. I’m very happy to have a new family and my fourth Hoppet win.” Quote from Phil- “it’s tough to be second again but I gave it all out on the course. The pace was good and Valerio made some very strong moves. Hopefully I’ll go better next year.” Quote from Barbara – “I am very happy for another victory. I felt good today and could use my strength on the course. The track was perfect and I am so happy for another win.” Kangaroo Hoppet 42km Men 1. Valerio Leccardi SUI 2. Phil Bellingham AUS 3. ey everyone, good to be back, I feel like we have all just climbed a mountain, enjoyed the summit (taken photos and posted on Instagram etcetera) and are now proceeding to slide down the other side. The crux of the season is over, it has been incredible can I say, and now we look towards Spring, and what a delicious Spring it will be. The race season in Falls Creek is over and now it’s time to go out get some sun and clock in those crusty K’s. A segment on the best Spring skiing will come out in a couple of weeks. First though let’s debrief the Hoppet. Hoppet Recap Symbolic of how good the Winter has been thus far, the 28th Kangaroo Hoppet was a cracker. The sun was shining, there was only one breath of wind, and of course

making it the largest international ski event in the Southern Hemisphere. The 42km title ‘came home’ so to speak, this year with two Australian residents taking out the Men’s and Women’s titles. From all reports the crowds had a blast out on the field. Also I must give a shout out to my Mum, Genevieve, completing her first Joey Hoppet and my Dad, Christo, making a comeback after a few years out with injury. Nice!

Jezersek, with Dabudyk and McDermott broke away from the rest of the women’s field early on, then put her foot down up ‘The Paralyser’ onto the Bogong High Plains and skied away solo. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Jezersek and team-mate Jessica Yeaton achieved Australia’s best cross country skiing result, 12th in the Team Sprint event. In the men’s field, racing was very tactical along Sun Valley first time round before Valerio injected some pace making it a pack of five skiers by the dam wall. Callum Watson further broke the group to just three by the top of the Paralyser however Watson paid for his exploits along Heathy Spur. Valerio then made a break from Phil after Sun Valley on the second lap. A decisive break only a Swiss ex Border Guard could have done, hardened by adversity, his break from Phil was a symbol of trained, practiced grit, so as to make the present decision second nature and almost comfortable, blissful. I aspire to have one day developed these mental and physical structures.

THANK YOU Kangaroo Hoppet Volunteers

S

aturday August 25th, our backyard out the back of Falls Creek in the spectacular Bogong High Plains held the largest international XC Skiing event in the southern hemisphere! This was the 28th Australian Kangaroo Hoppet. The 42km of trail was groomed perfectly, the weather was brilliant, there were 1043 entries total across all three races, there were 25 different nationalities represented with 118 international skiers. Importantly, there was a mighty large team of volunteers that made the event possible. A massive thank you to the members of Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, the Hoppet Race Committee and many other people from the Mount Beauty and Falls Creek community, that come along as volunteers and worked very hard to set up the event

in the days before, to be Course Marshals, help at drink stations to assist skiers and those volunteers, (including several who had also skied 42km…) that stayed back until the last star dropper was back in the shed Saturday afternoon. Just on 20 Year Nine students from Mount Beauty Secondary College helped with the task of transforming the Nordic Bowl to host the Hoppet. Their contribution was part of the ‘Future Makers’ Programme with Bogong Outdoor School that has students getting involved in their community. It was fantastic to have your help and have you involved in your wider community. The volunteer contribution to help make this event the success that it is shows that our community has lots of wonderful people that are able to host a large international XC Ski Race. It is a fine example that demonstrates that XC Skiing in Australia is strong and is

wonderful to see that this event provides from young children skiing with their families for fun, right through to our elite Olympic athletes, all participating together. That is the Kangaroo Hoppet, right here in our own backyard. Thank you again to our volunteers for your mighty help and time. Enjoy the spring skiing from now! • Regards, Nicholas Wright

to bring some new concepts and ideas to our planning and community activity.

he Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association is holding the AGM on Thursday, September 6th, 7:30pm at AUDITORIUM@ informationcentre. The Association has been active for six years and in that time has achieved its main objective - better communication between our community and the Alpine Shire. This has been achieved through regular attendance at Council meetings at which we are prepared to question Council actions, representation on funding selection panels and monitoring and reporting community concerns. The Committee has also provided advice to members to assist with WINTER EDITION SEVENTEEN their personal approach to Council. At our invitation, for the last two years, Council AD PROOF has held a meeting in Mount Beauty and given residents an opportunity to meet them personally and seek their assistance.

All residents are welcome to attend this meeting, hear about our successes and concerns, bring forward their ideas and share some discussion time over a ‘cuppa’.

T

Our current projects include provision of public conveniences in the Tawonga South business area, an extension of the West Kiewa Track beyond Pebble Beach, and the clearing and beautification of the open area opposite the AGL offices. We have a well established executive and committee, who are prepared to accept office again, but we would really appreciate some new blood on the general committee,

Wear Orange Weekend For SES Awareness - Where: Falls Creek Resort, ATS & Slalom Plaza. On Friday 31st August and Saturday 1st September, the Falls Creek SES Unit are holding a community awareness operation FRIDAY throughout the29TH resort.SEPTEMBER It’s your chance2017 to learn what these people do – hopefully you never need them! The Falls Creek Search and Rescue service began out of necessity to assist lost or overdue skiers. Locals donated their time and personal resources to help out in times of need and it has been a part of the Falls Creek community since the 60’s and 70’s.

In 1986 the group was recognised as a vital alpine resource and became part of the State Emergency Service (SES). Locals are still donating their time to search for and rescue skiers, snowboarders and hikers. These unsung heroes answer the call in all types of weather and anytime of the day or night. You might see these hardy souls heading out every Wednesday morning during winter, rain hail or shine. This is their weekly training session, where they practice navigation, trailer rescues, steep terrain snowmobiling and emergency bivouacs. All this is essential practice for bringing people back from the Bogong High Plains when they are too injured or too ill to get home under their own steam. The Unit has around 30 members donating their time during winter and get regular call-outs to help resort guests. Working with the Victorian Police, training with snowmobiles takes a toll, with maintenance a major cost. When you see the men & women of the Unit, say Hi and drop a dollar or few into their collection cans. It might help fund your rescue! •

PICK MY PROJECT Please Get Involved

P

ick My Project is a $30M online community grants program that gives Victorians the chance to suggest project ideas and then vote to decide which ones are funded. This is a Victorian-first community grants initiative, with at least $1 million in funding available in each metro and regional area. It is the first program of its kind in Victoria, offering Victorians an opportunity to make their community an even better place to live. During the voting period, applicants will share their great idea with their networks and encourage people to vote for their project. Voting opened at 9am on Monday 13 August 2018 and will close at 5pm on Monday 17 September 2018. Winning projects will be announced in September 2018. In the Mount Beauty Falls Creek area there are several projects – all very worthwhile. This paper has listed a few for your consideration – including last week’s Big Hill Bike Park proposal. Now, more importantly, because you are asked to vote for three projects – please jump on line and vote. Run, Walk, Ride with the Flow, beyond Pebble Beach This project would extend the current paved track from Pebble Beach a further 0.9 kilometres making a round trip of 6

A lot of effort has gone into our pebble beach track and more is needed to continue to build on this fine asset. Pic - Courtesy UKV Community Association.

kilometres. It opens up beautiful views of the Kiewa River and Mount Bogong, providing easier access to the river for recreational and training activities. The area is surrounded by mountains and is one of the few available areas for a flat track. The track is located very close to the Mount Beauty and Tawonga South townships, making it easily accessible. The Community has been working to achieve this track over 10 years and it has recently been fully scoped. Market research shows that visitors value access to rivers over most other activities and this track will play a crucial role in supporting the local economy. The even, sealed surface would make the track available to all ability levels, ages and those with disabilities, either supported or going it alone. Both locals and tourists need safe places to exercise or relax which is beneficial for their health and fitness. There are many sites where picnic

facilities will be established. Wayfinding and Interpretative signage about the Kiewa Valley will be placed in appropriate locations. How to Vote 1. Register at pickmyproject.vic.gov.au 2. Select your location to view projects within your local area. If you don’t live within the Kiewa Valley, you can still elect to support our project by choosing the ‘Out of Area’ option. You will then be prompted to select projects within the local area. 3. To be eligible, you must vote for three projects in total. 4. Enter your phone number to receive an SMS code to verify your vote. 5. We’re up against stiff competition in neighbouring communities so please cast your votes and support these rare community funding opportunities. 6. Voting closes Monday, 17th September 2018. •

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Cedarwood Apt Two

including a leather 2.5 sofa lounge which can be used as a double bed.

his two bedroom, two bathroom apartment located high up in the village has motivated vendors who will listen to reasonable offers.

In the summer months, (that which we describe as everything not winter), the location can be easily accessed by car with adequate parking out front or nearby.

Everything is done for a lucky purchaser to enjoy. Move in and fall in love with the views from the large private balcony and all the tasteful conveniences this recently refurbished apartment has to offer.

While the quality of your enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village.

This property is perfect for a family or group of four. It has everything you need for your stay. This apartment has a modern alpine feel with wonderful mountain views from both inside the apartment and from the full length northfacing balcony. The location is true ski-in and ski-out access during the winter season.

Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with some being accessed from very close to Cedarwood. Add to these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot, on a horse or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria.

T

This self-contained apartment consists of a main bedroom with splitable king and full en suite which also has front loading washing machine and dryer. The second bedroom has a splitable king and bathroom with shower and basin. There is a separate toilet off the lounge.

A well located, comfortable unit with great views. Pic - Courtesy of the agent

The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes the Alpine Challenge, the Mile High Dragon Boats, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the Easter Festival as well as regular mountain bike shuttles. And to quote our CEO from an article last season (Edition Six) “Falls Creek has the highest total visitor days of any Alpine Resort in Victoria.”

The fully equipped compact kitchen contains a two burner electric cooktop, Bosch compact dishwasher, 240L fridge/ freezer and a microwave/convection oven. The apartment features all new furnishings

The Cedarwood complex has a long alpine head lease to 2052, offers onsite management and has private storage cage for owners. Book an inspection today – because this is a value purchase at $225,000. Call the agent, Christa Smit (Zirknitzer) at Zirky Real Estate on Mb: 0402 277 808. •
