FROM THE CEO courses, what clothes to wear, avalanches, landslips, the weather etc… none of which relate to dealing with COVID19 and the challenges it has presented to the ski resorts and the businesses who operate here, not to mention our guests!

So, please - be considerate, be kind, and appreciate what they are doing. They are the ones keeping the resort open so you can enjoy it. We are all part of the same tribe… “the nutters” who love this sport, this mountain and all the happiness it brings.

The idea of making it harder to come skiing is offensive to anyone who loves this sport. By default, we are a risk-taking bunch. We drive up icy roads, endure weather conditions that for the most part any sane person would question, we strap planks (or a wide plank) to our feet, hurtle ourselves down a slippery slope, we layer up our bodies (or for some, slip into Lycra), and squeeze our feet and heads into equipment that verifies we must be mad!

It is our collective responsibility to work together to keep the mountain open and safe… oh yeah… and be kind and considerate in the process.

Foodie Tip of the Week Astra – that word alone, after winning countless awards, is synonymous with luxury and excellence. The ambience and style, from the bar, its fireplace, the comfortable lounges, to the food and wine is an experience on par, if not better, than anywhere in the world. Falls Creek is a foodies haven and Astra features prominently on the ‘must do’ list. The Tasting menu is nothing short of outstanding. Each course simply mindblowing and a taste explosion. Being partial to Japanese infused and inspired flavours the Chef and his team have produced an unmatched offering in Falls Creek. Team this with an extensive and diverse wine list, stocked with many outstanding local and international offerings, aided by the in-house

So, for anyone to assume, imply, or outrightly think the resorts are responsible for making getting here harder, you are kidding! The effort to implement processes and protocols that are designed to ensure the resorts can operate safely, given the circumstances and risks still considered by experts to exist, is far better than the alternative – not opening the resort at all. We’ve had cracker conditions and a ripper snowpack has been laid down right across the resort. However, a ski resort without people, is just a mountain with snow on it, accessible to a few, certainly not accessible to everyone who wants to be here. That’s not why we do, what we do! There are a lot of front-line workers, at the testing sites, on roadblocks, or at the resort entry gates, and countless others who must be tested more often than most to provide services into the resort… they are ALL working under extreme conditions to execute Stay Safe directions that will keep the resort and all its guests safe.

sommelier, you’re certain to find the perfect match for each course. https://astrafallscreek. com.au/ - following the link to Opentable – book it and spoil yourself, you won’t be disappointed. Finally - A shout out to Alpine Health, Albury Wodonga Health, Goulburn Murray Health and the flotilla of people who dropped everything to get the infrastructure in place to protect the season. The 4Site crew and the resilient RMB comms team and visitor info crew who have been the second line of defense. Thank you. • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

THE OUTDOOR SCHOOL A Valuable Asset

M

y name is Grace Kelly and I am currently one of the two trainees working at the Outdoor School Bogong (formerly the Bogong Outdoor Education Centre). I grew up in this region, in Albury, and attended high school at Albury High. Before applying to the traineeship in 2019 my experience in Outdoor Education was very limited. In NSW schools outdoor education isn’t offered as a subject and so my outdoor participation came from joining most sport teams that were on offer at my school. My love of sport grew outside of school also as I competed in soccer and AFL representing both NSW and Victoria in state competitions. A cousin of mine introduced me to Outdoor Education first as she had finished

her teaching degree and was in her first year of teaching VCE Outdoor Ed at Tallangatta. I was finishing my study at school and needed some direction for once I left. At this time the advert for the 2020 traineeship in the local paper was released. I applied, was accepted and made the move to the Bogong Village. Our first training block was in January 2020 where we meet the other trainees (from other schools across Vic) in Melbourne. We started the first of many training sessions to complete our Cert III and IV. By the end of the year we had completed flat water courses, climbing at Mt Arapiles, wilderness first aid courses and multiple bushwalks through various Victorian National Parks. All of this training was supported by the teachers working at Bogong and as we gained more experience we were supported to take a more active role when working with the student groups that came to our school.

Outdoor School is a P-12 Residential School within the Victorian Department of Education and Training. We comprise two campuses – 15 Mile Creek located at Greta South on the Benalla Whitfield Road in North East Victoria, and Bogong, situated just below Falls Creek in the north east section of the Victorian Alps. We also form part of the ROSA group of Schools that provide high quality outdoor education programs. In 2010 Bogong Outdoor Education Centre and the 15 Mile Creek Campus became one school, creating the now renamed Outdoor School as a multicampus P-12 residential school. The students that attend Outdoor School Bogong come from all across Victoria. Regional and metropolitan public schools visit for a five day shorter camp or are involved in our ‘future-maker’ program that runs for 12 days. There are many programs offered at Bogong all year round. During the warmer months our shorter programs consist of some on-site activities like canoeing, rock climbing/abseiling, creek walking, high ropes and orienteering.

THE OUTDOOR SCHOOL We also offer mountain bike riding either at Falls Creek or the Big Hill mountain bike park. For our longer programs during the summer period we include a bushwalk on the Bogong High Plains. During the colder winter period we head up to Falls for the option of snow-shoeing, cross country skiing or downhill skiing. This year Outdoor School Bogong is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The celebration will be held at the school campus, with all previous staff personally invited and an open invite extended to all who would like to attend. The day will consist of small activities including indoor rock climbing; a high ropes session, meeting our animals and a tour of Bogong’s Backyard. There will be an unveiling of the anniversary plaque and deliveries from our special guests. Through the years, Bogong has seen many changes, the transition from camp to government school, abseiling off the dam wall to abseiling from certified load rated sites, these changes however were nothing like what happened last year. So many positives came from our time-off programs last year; the downside was not having students come to our school. We instead helped other schools out where we could, our staff delivered VCE units to students who missed our programs due to lockdowns, staff also helped out in local schools creating and delivering content to students who weren't able to study from home. We also took the opportunity to review our current programs and plan for improvement. As trainees, it also provided us with great opportunities to extend our hard skill development through extra training provided by staff members of the school. We were able to spend some time on the

water and completed our swift water training followed by trips down the Mitta, King and Snowy Rivers. Everyone around campus was so grateful when our programs were able to run again as we missed having all those smiley faces around and being able to experience the growth of the students who come to learn with us.

The Bogong Experience does not only impact on the students who come to us, but I find myself forever grateful for an opportunity to work, learn and train amongst amazing teachers and staff. I have enjoyed my time here at Bogong Outdoor School and am thankful for the wisdom from all the legends of the Outdoor industry here at Bogong. • Grace Kelly

WE SKI FOR STEVE LEE Backcountry Tours.

A

s most readers of this publication would be aware, one of Falls Creeks favourite son’s, skiing royalty, Steve Lee suffered a major stroke last September. Safe to say, this was a massive shock to everyone and a massive blow to Steve, his family and indeed the whole Falls Creek and skiing community. In one way or another since childhood, Steve’s life has revolved around skiing. Growing up in Falls Creek, skiing came naturally to Steve, but he was certainly not content with it being a recreational pursuit. Instead Steve took his sport to the very highest level achievable as a representative of Australia in the dangerous and demanding discipline of Downhill racing. After arguably the most successful alpine skiing career of any Australian male to date, Steve went on to work in various fields but his love for skiing never faded (and probably

never will). He then set himself up to keep the skiing dream alive. His first venture was here in Falls Creek, where he came up with the genius idea of creating a lightweight passenger trailer to ferry skiers into the backcountry. This is where I came into the picture. Steve needed a second guide/sled rider who knew their way around the area, so my hand went up like a shot. Fast forward more years than I care to count and here we are…. Steve’s daughter Layla has decided to take over the reins of the family business, it was therefore a no brainer to put my hand back up and offer my help. After a couple of early hiccups and a hand full of Covid setbacks, we are happy to announce that we are back in business for the remainder of the 2021 winter season. Suffice to say that Steve Lee’s ski boots are metaphorically too big to fill, but we will be doing our best to keep the dream alive and continue offering an amazing and unique backcountry skiing experience. The team

consists of, Steve’s nephew, Paddy Dodd, long-time friend and co-conspirator Bruce Johnston and yours truly out in the field and Layla Lee taking care of the business and booking side of things. The resort is open for business and has a great cover of natural snow and the backcountry is looking primed for the rest of winter and the spring season. So, do yourself a favour, grab a couple of your best buddies and book yourself a backcountry tour.

RACE CLUB NEWS It’s Been a Long Wait!

F

alls Creek Race Club, or as we like to call it, FCRC, has been a ginormous rollercoaster filled with Covid-19 and all the in between! We have had to wait so long for it to finally happen but, it was all worth it. Though we may not have our beloved European coaches this year, it has created great opportunities for outstanding Australian coaches to teach us in the Winter Sports Programs. We are so lucky to have such a great team of coaches this year, both returning coaches and new ones. We all admire these amazing skiers and snowboarders. Everybody was so excited to see each other this weekend and find out what coach they had. The atmosphere was buzzing. The gorgeous weather on Sunday created the perfect weekend. In Race Club on a normal day you will find Parmy with all the amazing freestyle skiers hitting their jumps in the park (maybe even a backflip here or there.) And Tom, D-Man, Micheal, Kerry, Jackson, Anoop and Sam zooming down the Nastar and Ruined Castle racecourses with kids of all ages, old friends and new. We may have days where it feels like our fingers and toes are going to fall off, but to all the parents out there, Race Club is a fantastic bonding experience for your children. A vital skill in life that Race Club has taught me is resilience and confidence in yourself. In conclusion, Race Club has been an important part of my life for many years and it has given me all the vital skills to thrive not just on the slopes but in the big wide world we live in today. • By Lucy Fary Age 12 #raceclubkid

Race Club celebrated the resumption of programs after Lockdown’s rude interruption with Casual Drinks on Saturday night at Attunga Alpine Lodge. As usual, Bronwyn and James Wruck were great hosts even when dealing with the limitations the current COVID restrictions impose. Thanks to everyone who attended the drinks. It’s always nice to get to meet our kid’s coaches (and our own for those of us doing the Master’s Program) in a social setting and have a good chin wag. From a program perspective, it was great to be on good winter snow. Head Coach Duane Dinham and Development Coach Kerry Lee Dodd welcomed the 2021 Winter Sports Program (WSP) athletes with smiling enthusiasm, greeting new faces and recognising returning athletes. To be honest, it was a bit of an odd start: the Full Time program had started two weeks earlier, only to halt after two days because of the two week lockdown, while the Part Time and Weekend programs only got started on Friday & Saturday respectively. Irrelevant of this slight hiccup, and the bigger hiccup of 2020 in general, the past weekend couldn’t have been better. The Summit was spinning, we had sunshine, firm snow and our all Aussie coaching team is working to make this season one to remember. As Kerry so aptly put it “while there is still so much uncertainty in our world, it was very comforting to have great groups of kids that are all passionate about being safe, strong successful skiers.” • Have a great week and see you up on the slopes! Cheers, Nyree Fiddes from Falls Creek Race Club

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS It’s All Good!

W

ow, what an exciting week at Falls Creek. We are stoked to welcome everyone back to the snow with the end of lockdown. The XC trails are in great shape at the moment, with groomer now packing and setting tracks on Healthy Spur, Langford’s Gap, Pauls Track and Sun Valley. Unfortunately, with the introduction of mandatory COVID testing for resort entry – and the predicted shocking weather, the Australian XC Championships scheduled for last weekend were postponed. Stay tuned for updates regarding when the races will be rescheduled.

Meet The National Team: This week we are caching up with Nick Blackwell. Nick is a Mount Beauty local and member of the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club. A member of the National Team since 2017, Nick has developed a

reputation of the team’s ‘Gym Junkie’. I think it’s safe to say that all members of the team are grateful to have the opportunity to utilise his personal gym when needed. 1. When did you start XC skiing, how did you get involved? How long have you been a member of the National Team? Nick: I was lucky enough to be born and raised in Mount Beauty and have been skiing since I was 2yrs old. I didn’t really get into racing until I was 11. From this point onwards, however, my love for the sport and racing has grown to where I am today. 2. What is your favourite XC event or place to race?

Nick: This really depends on what workout I am doing. If I am doing intensity sessions, I really enjoy making loops throughout the internal trails, only going out as far as McKay Road or Panorama Corner. When I am going for a long ski, Sun Valley, Watchbed Creek or even the full Birkebeiner Loop are my go-to routes. 4. What is your go-to training snack when on the trails? Nick: Bananas! I imagine this may be a pretty typical response but it’s such an easy option. I don’t really enjoy things that are too sweet when training, especially when I am working hard.

ACTIVITIES THIS WEEK 5. What do you do when you’re not skiing? Nick: I enjoy mountain biking and fitness in general. I also love being in the gym. Away from sport I enjoy producing music and small video clips. 6. Did you pick up any new hobbies/skills during lockdown? Nick: Yes and no… Whilst I didn’t pick up a new hobby, I did start studying a Cert III and Cert IV in fitness. 7. What are your goals for the up and coming race season? Nick: My main focus is the Beijing 2022 Olympics, which will be held in February. I am also hoping to qualify and race at the World U23 Championships. 8. If you could ski anywhere in the world, where would it be? Nick: I really enjoy the frequent changes of scenery. Particularly in the USA or Europe, where there are many different resorts in close proximity. One of my favourites of these places is the Goms Valley in Switzerland. I really enjoy the huge range of trails and terrain available to ski there. 9. Three things you pack in your bag on race day? Nick: Two suits, lots of snacks and music. All essentials for me to perform at my race day best. 10. If you weren’t a skier what sport would you do? Nick: Most likely Mountain Biking, AFL or SnowboardX. No idea which of the three I would pick, but thankfully I never had to make that decision. •

nd help protect life and property in your community.

Ready access to firefighting water is critical in Alpine areas. The time taken for firefighters to clear a hydrant of snow is time that fire-fighters are not conducting a primary search or fire attack. The ‘Falls Creek CFA Over-snow Pumper’ does not carry its own water supply. Your help in maintaining safe access to a cleared hydrant will help CFA firefighters protect your property and lives within your community.

We have all experienced recent snowfalls that change the landscape overnight. This is quickly followed by a flurry of activity clearing; roads, pathways, stairs, access to lodges etc. When you see this happening; please consider that fire hydrants will also have become covered in snow. We are calling upon you to assist in clearing a hydrant close to your property. Should you be able to assist in adopting a hydrant, please drop CFA Commander Mark Steven a short email m.steven@cfa. vic.gov.au detailing the location of the hydrant you or the team within your lodge or business are able to maintain. •

When it comes to fire, minutes matter. Fires are easily managed when small. When given time to grow, fires can quickly become uncontrollable. The 10 minute delay caused by clearing a hydrant will
