FROM THE CEO Hence, the analogy to God and religion and Pascal’s original theory. Whether you can prove or disprove the existence of God, it would make sense to wager that ‘s/he’ does exist, because there’s a lot to gain if it turns out ‘s/he’ does and not much lost if ‘s/he’ doesn’t. So, back to the IPCC report – it’s grim reading. But frankly, doing nothing on climate change isn’t an option. If there is a 1% chance that the planet is heading toward a truly major disaster and delay in our actions means reaching a point of no return, our inaction is reckless. There is no planet B. We must all play a part, even the smallest change contributes.

Foodie Tip of the Week: Skiduber.com.au – what is that you ask? We’ll the team at Feathertop Lodge, in 2019, launched a delivery service for the food they serve at their outstanding restaurant, for those who want an exceptional meal, but can’t be bothered going out. Hence, they come to you. The offering is extensive (all off the restaurant’s a la carte menu) and caters to all tastes (and allergies). There’s a choice of four starters, six mains, five sides, three desserts, three kids meal options, three twin share deals, plus an extensive drinks menu. All delivered to you! We had the Karaage Chicken starter, the risotto, the steak, sides of broccolini and fat chips, plus wine …all delivered in under 45mins, piping hot and all in recycled packaging. If you’ve had a big day on the mountain and those legs need a rest, give www.skiduber.com.au a go. If you need to stretch those legs, you can also do pickup.

Logic says – even if there is only a one percent chance of climate change, that is still enough reason to take action to prevent or slow climate change – to continue to enjoy what we have. Pic Chris Hocking

This pic turned up on digital the other day and we just had to print it. It came from Brad Wilson who said “These were great times and a special part of my life. Working alongside these guys summer and winter was so much fun.” The photo was taken in 1994 and features, from left, Dougie ‘Cannonball’ Zollo; Jeff ‘Joffa’ Dixon; James Farley; Jim ‘Jimbo’ Holz; Ronald ‘Buzz’ Sault; Brad Wilson Junior; and Mark ‘Moustachio’ Davis – sometimes referred to as the ‘Magnificent 7.

The guys worked as Ski Area Supervisors and Mobile Operators. Their roles would now be known as Zone Leaders. Local groomer Nic Wilkie touched it up a bit so we could print it. Thanks guys, great work. If anyone has any other old shots of Falls Creek and the team, let’s see if we can’t print them and get a bit of history rolling. •

PUBLIC NOTICE This paper, and our contributors, are working extremely hard to be positive and care for the people in our community. Some time back we mentioned mental health. If you have a tax problem – you go to the best tax agent. If your car blows up – you go to a very good mechanic. If you get lost – you would want the best SES personnel looking for you. Therefore, if you are feeling a little down – then you seek out the best advice possible.

And if any of these outfits don’t suit, talk to our local Mount Beauty Medical Centre on 03 5754 3400 and any of the great team will be very happy to help.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Meet The Team

T

his week we are catching up with National Team Member Casey Wright, freshly minted National Sprint and Distance Champion. She is a valuable member of the staff at Falls Creek Cross Country and has been a member of the Australian National Cross Country Team since 2012. Casey represented Australia at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeong Chang and is hoping to go to Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics. 1. Cross country is a hard sport; why did you choose it? Casey: why not? It’s a good challenge! 2. What’s your favourite place to ski overseas?

Casey: It would have to be Alaska, skiing at Turn Again Pass near Anchorage in the spring is pretty good. 3. Where’s your favourite race venue? Casey: It would have to be Pragelato, in Italy, home of the cross country events for 2006 Turin Olympics. 4. What’s your favourite training workout? Casey: I really like adventure workouts where I get to go explore and do something challenging, it pushes my comfort zone. Apart from that, it’s probably doing some sort of speed, downhill or agility drills, just having fun on skis without thinking too much. I try to do agility once a month on snow and then speeds most weeks. Adventure sessions are reserved for big volume weeks, where I need to

5. What did you learn in the Pyeong Chang Olympics that will help you in next year’s Beijing Olympics? Casey: If I qualify, I think it can be quite daunting skiing at such a big event with lots of media coverage and everything that comes with large events like the Olympics. For me it’s being able to take a step back and enjoy the moment for what it is, as again it’s just another ski race. 6. If you could have dinner with any person living or not, who would it be? Casey: I want to say David Attenborough, I feel like he could have some pretty cool conversations 7. If you were trapped on a dessert island and could only take five songs with you, what would they be? Casey: They would be 1955 by Hilltop Hoods, Clair De Lune by Flight Facilities, Outro by M83, Nice to be Alive by Ball Park Music and Dance to Joy Division by The Wombats. Thanks Casey, good luck with your world cup events in the Northern Hemisphere and good luck qualifying for the Olympics, not that luck has anything to do with it, we know how hard you work. •

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Grooming Advice Particularly in these spring type conditions it is really important to consider the grooming when skiing later in the day. When the grooming machine heads out in the afternoon it puts heat into the already warm snow as it smooths and packs. As the air temperature has not yet dropped to zero it remains very soft, if people ski, particularly skate, straight after the grooming machine deep skate marks are left which then freeze and make the skiing the next morning diabolical to say the least. This frustrates the groomers who go to a lot of trouble to create a good skiing surface, and anyone trying to ski in the morning. Please avoid the freshly groomed snow in the afternoon and look for the trails groomed the previous night. •

Track My Ride Has returned again this year with no cost to the user, thanks to Falls Creek Resort Management.

If you go to the snow report page on the fallscreek. com.au website and next to the header that says Cross Country Status and click XC Tracker you will see what trails have been groomed in the last 24 hours. There is also a QR code in the windy corner building that links directly to the report. • Casey in action at the National Championships two weeks ago at Perisher. Pic – Finn Marsland

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE & BEAUTY Photography

E

rn Reeders spent some of his childhood in Mount Beauty and has spent the last 10 winters in the valley, coming up for its natural beauty and the chance to ski tour and telemark in the mountains. His interest in bird photography was sparked by seeing an explosion of Black Kites during a 'dry flood' in the Simpson Desert. Bird shooting he finds rewarding because it's challenging - taking gear, technique, patience and luck. Last year Ern won the Birdlife Australia Photography Award for the best bird in flight. He runs the Facebook group Birds of North-east Victoria and uses Nikon and Sony gear. During winter our avian friends have been busy feeding up and building or renovating their nests ready for new life. Around the Pondage and Pebble Beach walk you'll see flocks of Red-browed Finches foraging for seeds in the grass and lifting up to nearby bushes as you walk by. Stalks of grass are there to line a nest.

Vietnam Veterans Day

almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. Tragically, 521 of them died and 3000 were wounded.

On the 18th August each year, Vietnam Veterans' Day is commemorated on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. It is an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.

The Battle of Long Tan was a significant moment in Australia's war in Vietnam.

The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th Century. The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s involvement in the war. By the time the war had come to an end, ▼ Falls Creek

SCAFFOLD

On 18 August 1966, in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, Australian soldiers fought one of their fiercest battles of the war. The men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, faced a force of some 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. The battle was fought in wet and muddy conditions during a heavy tropical downpour.
