FROM THE CEO Any finally, a word of thanks and praise. The editor of this fine newspaper, through thick and thin, has not missed a beat in making sure the publication gets out into the community and a few local kids pick up a few bucks delivering it. Ken provides news, views and the occasional inappropriate joke (check out last week’s classifieds!!!). Ken Bell – you’re a legend and thanks for what you do for our community, our mountain and the Valley. You’re a true champion, who’s community spirit provides inspiration when our mettle is tested. Cheers to you Bellie and thanks. Now, to those who can, if you can, get out there and hit the slopes… Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Hours of Enjoyment

W

ith very little happening at Falls Creek this week, locals and the National XC team are taking advantage of snow, grooming, spring like weather and no crowds. Being able to get out and get a couple of hours of exercise in these pristine conditions must be very nice. Speaking of spring, by the time you read this, it will officially be spring and we can start thinking about the best skiing conditions and arguably the best XC skiing in the world. Very few places in the world offer the spring snow pack combined with the fantastic rolling terrain that Falls Creek’s backcountry has. As they say every beach has its day but for the best off-piste skating I am yet to ski anywhere that matches our terrain and consistency of corn snow.

After a couple of days of spring freeze / thaw the world is your oyster for back country skating - just leave early (but not too early) and follow the sun. I tend to have two different plans when heading for a spring BC skate, either a longish tour, visiting huts or destinations like the Fainters or my favourite, skating for turns. Grab a friend, some food, an older pair of skating skis and head off, popular longish skates include Spion Kopje, the Fainters, Mount Jim, a circumnavigation of Pretty Valley, or visit any of the Huts in the area. My other plan of attack is skating for turns, a bit of experience and paying attention to the sun will direct you to some great descents with just enough softening effect from the sun to allow dreamy tele or parallel turns on perfect corn. Favourite spots for turns are exploring around the Rocky Knolls especially heading back to Rocky Valley Dam, the backside of Mt Nelse and the glades off Langford’s Loop. Heathy Spur also offers lots of possibilities with many north facing glades heading down to Nelse Creek.

WE'RE STILL HERE! We have lots to keep you warm & secure! Clothing, Boots, Work wear, Insulation, Heaters! If you need it, we have it – or we’ll get it! Gift vouchers and free gift wrapping available

Tips for a successful BC skate. ❄ Pay attention to the weather, the days leading up to your trip and what is happening during the day, no one enjoys a slog through ankle deep mashed potatoes if you leave your run home too late. ❄ Use older gear, breakages can happen. ❄ A pair of older skating skis with a bit of side cut helps with the turns, non-racing poles with slightly larger baskets help if it gets soft. ❄ Older skating boots are softer and help with the tele thing, and if you have to walk a section it won’t matter.

FOOD FOR SHEPPARTON Falls Creek Community Digs Deep

E

arlier last week, some of the figures being promoted around Shepparton were that nearly 20,000 people were confined to their homes, quarantining for about two week. Out of a population of some 69,000, that is a lot of people ‘out of action’ so to speak. Even if these figures were only half right, that would still be 10,000 people locked down. That’s a lot of people and a tremendous disruption to the proper functioning of the community. Getting food to people is a major problem and that is where Falls Creek comes in. The Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce and its members have undertaken a food drive to assist with the current food and essential supply crisis currently unfolding in Shepparton. Before the latest lockdown in Regional Victoria was announced on Saturday 21st August, lodges, cafes and restaurants across the mountain were stocked up and ready for a busy winter weekend. Following the lockdown announcement and guests having to leave the resort, there was an excess of perishable food in venues. As a result, the Falls Creek business community is donating food from its venues to the community of Shepparton to help alleviate the food and essential supplies shortage that has affected the regional city. After a disastrous season 2020 with nothing happening – and season 2021 ‘going to the dogs’ with three lockdowns across

Steve Bond at Feathertop Lodge, packing up a heap of fresh food to be sent to the folk in need in Shepparton. Pic – Courtesy Falls Creek Chamber.

Melbourne and Victoria, the earnings of the operators have been decimated. But, the Falls Creek business community has ‘dug deep’ into the fridges and freezers and is donating a ‘truck load’ of perfectly good food to those in need in Shepparton President of the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, Lisa Logan expressed concern at the current situation and our community’s desire to assist the regional city of Shepparton, “Falls Creek businesses are concerned about the current food shortage in Shepparton and saw an opportunity to provide direct assistance to that community in need.” “Falls Creek has been well supported by regional Victorians who have been visiting the resort, enjoying the winter experiences,

and helping us to keep our venues and mountain open when Melbourne was in lockdown. At Falls Creek we know the importance of banding together as a community and helping out when we can.” The food from Falls Creek operators was collected by Red Cross last Saturday and delivered to Lisa McKenzie at GVCare Lighthouse Projects in Shepparton for immediate distribution to the community. •

THANK YOU! From the Medical Centre

F

irstly, we’d like to acknowledge the significant toll the Pandemic has taken on our community members and local businesses. We say thank you to the many hundreds of people in our Community who are already fully or partially vaccinated. Your vaccination protects more than just yourself; it protects our community, our children, our elderly, our friends and our vulnerable. It also protects the things we cherish such as our small businesses, health services, community services, sport and recreation.

Vaccinations Vaccination is the way out of lockdowns and will lead to resumption of a more normal life. The vaccines are very safe and extremely effective. There is ample evidence from overseas, and now in NSW and Victoria, ▼ Falls Creek

that Covid-19 is rapidly becoming a disease of unvaccinated people. Fully vaccinated people are significantly less likely to have any symptoms, be hospitalised or die. Community members can be reassured that our medical, nursing and reception staff have all been vaccinated, with either Astra Zeneca or Pfizer.

Covid and Our Community As a small, remote community we are particularly vulnerable to the effects of this Pandemic. Our community should be aware that if Covid-19 comes to our town, our hospital will not be able to manage anybody with flu-like symptoms, much less Covid-19. All unwell people will need to go to Albury, or beyond, for their care. Many of you will already know the significant toll this takes on our patients and their families.

There is no denying that the Pandemic is causing fear and anxiety and propagating distrust. This is a natural reaction to our current circumstances. We all have opinions on how hotel quarantine, lockdowns, closed borders and vaccination programs could have been run better. But we should try not to confuse these concerns with how the medical and scientific community agrees the virus should be managed.

Research and Medical Science We have become increasingly concerned about some of the information being shared, especially on social media. We acknowledge that most people only have the best intentions, but some of this information puts people at risk, especially vulnerable people. One scientist or doctor may have an opinion and it may even be the opinion of some of their peers. But scientific evidence is not the opinion of one or many individuals. It is formed by extensive research which is rigorously scrutinised and then re-checked by independent experts. We would encourage everyone to gather their advice from published, scientific evidence rather than opinions. If you feel strongly about sharing something, please consider sharing it privately rather than with the community. If you can’t verify that the information is accurate, even if it looks accurate, then please consider not sharing it at all. Misinformation is the enemy to beating Covid-19.
