Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday.

One of the best noises, when waking up in a ski resort, is the echo of snow clearing equipment. Or, if staying close to BHP road at Falls Creek, it’s the clash of a front-end loader blade engaging with the road surface as it clears the falling snow from the roads, car parks and walkways. The piercing sound of the reversing heavy machinery warning alarms and the flood of light from the LED’s beaming down the road and lighting it up like the MCG at Friday night footy. It’s the sign of a great day ahead but also means I don’t need to set my alarm!

Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August.

The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

The current snowstorm and the forecast for the week leading into the school holidays looks like it will ensure the dumping of a solid foundation across the resort. Just in time for the rush of guests and visitors from

around Australia, as they all come to the ultimate Australian alpine village. As the only true ski in and ski out village in Australia, this week’s storm has set up the village roads ahead of the school holiday rush.

The beauty of the ski in ski out convenience here at Falls Creek is unparalleled in Australia. ‘Clicking in’ in the morning and skiing to Halley’s Comet, Eagle or the Gully chair to start your day out on the mountain, then, after having exhausted yourself and it’s time to head back in, the options are endless too… Drop in off Wombats or slide to the bottom and get back to Slalom Plaza, carve off Milky Way after showing your skills to all those riding Halley’s Comet and duck off onto Parallel or Arlberg street, take Short Cut off Days End and zip down Ory’s, cruise back to the Bowl along Broadway, or smash down the Summit, through the Village Bowl - then

During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

take your pick of village roads and you’ll be home in no time. The locals have a myriad of other options to get to the village, but unless you can ski like the late and great JP Auclair (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=1-VCWUtNm-4) stick to the more direct routes!

Plus sticking to the more direct routes, will enable you to click out on the way home for some après at any of the bars or restaurants peppered throughout the village for a cheeky beverage, before taking your boots off for the day.

If skinny ski’s and kick and glide are your thing, then the aqueduct through the village, under Halley’s Comet, all the way along it and above BHP road will take you out to the Nordic Bowl and the extensive cross country network within the resort and out into the Alpine National Park.

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!

A Resort Entry Vehicle Permit is required for your vehicle when entering the resort between 10th June and 1st October 2023. The entrance to the resort is at Howman’s Gap, approximately 4km below the village. Permits can be pre-purchased and printed at home prior to arriving at the resort, or purchased at the resort entrance ticket office.

The day rate is $56 if you purchase your entry permit on-line. An additional $7 applies to purchases at the ticket box. If arriving after 5pm and departing the resort prior to midnight on the same day, resort entry is free!

Season Entry Permits are available for purchase on-line for $550 and can be collected at Howman’s Gap Ticket Office or the Visitor Information Centre.

Foodie tip of Week: Bob Sugar

Nestled inside Elk, Bob Sugar’s is Asian fusion, with a heavy nod to some Japanese flavours and favourites. The choice is very selective, but comprehensive, and for large groups (six or more) the banquet options are the best way to go. Our party of four went with Banquet #2 and got a little bit of everything - though we’ll have to go back, as there’s still plenty more to try. I’ve spent and continue to spend a fair bit of time in Japan so can be pretty picky… but the Tuna Sesame Crackers were something new to me and phenomenal. I could just eat them all night long. Nonetheless, all the dishes were spot on. The wine list is full of popular varietals and regions, designed to complement the food on offer.

Insiders tip: have a pre and/or post (recommend both options if I’m being honest) dinner libation at Apartment 3, also part of the Elk complex. It’s a very stylish and lux, intimate and chilled location to start or end the evening.

FALLS CREEK MUSEUM

It would be ironic to say that the Falls Creek Museum has some history in Falls Creek – but that is exactly as it should be. Since opening in June 2013 (then in the Ground Floor of Snowlands Centre) our museum has seen a few changes. The major change was the move to the southern end of the Panabode building beside the bottom station of Halley’s Comet in 2015.

The Falls Creek Museum is a credit to the many people who have contributed – the team who did the renos and rebuild, the wonderful people who volunteer and the members of a very strong Falls Creek Historical Society committee who continue to work and put together fascinating memorabilia for sale. It would be fair to say that our museum ‘is not just being a museum.’ It is an active group of volunteers who devote considerable energy to continually making the museum a ‘better place!’

Last weekend saw a group of keen volunteers and committee members take part in a digitisation workshop with the

museum’s digitisation officer Vicki Cooper. Vicki is working with the Historical Society through to October this year as part of our successful Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant. Attendees at the workshop learnt how to take photographs using a Lightbox, how to catalogue items onto Victorian Collections using the correct terminology and also how to categorise items so that they tell a story online. This whole digitisation process is about securing the valuable collection that shows just what a wonderful village we have here.

Thank you to Vicki for showing us the ropes, FCAR for the use of the boardroom and to the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant for their financial support in making this valuable project a possibility.

Volunteers Needed

Are you looking for something a little different this season to occupy some down time? Each year we put a call out for volunteers for the Falls Creek Museum. We look to open the doors of the museum six days a week between the hours of 12noon and 4pm but need help doing this. You do not need to know the history of Falls Creek in depth, help will be at hand for tricky questions and there is plenty of information on show should you wish to learn more.

We are asking volunteers to do a four hour shift each week on the same day. There will be a roster allowing some room for moving or swapping shifts allowing for some flexibility. We are also looking for volunteers who might have the flexibility of coming in when required but not the ability to commit each week.

The role comes with all the training required, as well as access to a fridge and microwave and tea and coffee making facilities as well as a toilet for volunteers. The museum is located at the base of Halley’s Chairlift so you could even get first tracks and ski right to your shift.

The museum is heated and has an office where the volunteers can do their own work if visitation is low, or volunteers can be trained to assist us with our digitisation program.

Why We Should Remake & Repair Clothes

Did you grow up with a parent or grandparent who darned socks & mended torn knees in trousers? Do you take your shoes to the cobblers? Do your repair the holes in your snow jackets or pants when they tear? A Swedish study from 2017 suggests extending the life of our clothes is “the single best thing we can do for the planet.” – and there is recent media coverage of the waste.

Fashion cycles and consumer habits have drastically changed over the past decade or two. We produce clothes faster and more cheaply, and in larger quantities than ever before, something that the pioneers of Falls Creek could never have imagined. The 2017 study out of the Chalmers University of

Technology by Sandra Roos generated the most comprehensive life cycle analysis of the environmental impact of our apparel to date, with fascinating results.

Clothing production accounts for an enormous 70% of the overall carbon footprint of the fashion industry, more than distribution (4%) and washing and drying (3%). Surprisingly, Roos found the emissions from shopping trips - taken mainly by car in Sweden - took second place with a 22% overall carbon footprint.

Researchers say that a piece of clothing should last for 100 - 200 wears, but most of us chuck out our clothes after a fraction of those ‘outings!’ Shoppers in Europe and North America buy about 50 new clothing items per person each year. Given the impact of producing an item of clothing, buying less clothes and getting more wear out of what

we have is the most critical thing we can do to reduce fashions impact on the planet. Roos says: If you want to be as eco-friendly as possible, use your clothes until they are worn out. That is more important than all other aspects, such as how and where the clothes were manufactured and the materials they are made of.

So, what can we do to reduce the environmental impact of our clothes?

• Give away or sell your clothing to extend its life cycle, but this advice comes with a caution. Dumping your fast fashion in a charity bin & buying more contributes to the oversupply of clothing and does nothing to stop production impacts. However, buying second hand clothing instead of buying new is an excellent step in the right direction.

• Take a leaf out of your grandparent’s book and repair, remake and reinvent what you have. If sewing or knitting isn’t your thing, there are many businesses out there that offer these services. Remote Equipment Repairs in Point Cook specialises in repairing, recycling, remaking and

reinventing outdoor clothing and equipment to bring it back to good as new, including watertight zip replacement and fully sealed garment repairs.

• Look for eco-friendly materials, including natural materials such as organic cotton, hemp, linen, or recycled wool, or low impact materials such as Lenzing Modal and lyocell (also known as Tencel).

• Think about how you wash and dry your clothes. Each wash shortens the life of a garment, and tumble drying has an even more significant impact, using five times more energy than washing.

• Cold wash your clothes and hang items out to dry when possible.

• Invest in clothes made from high-quality materials so that you can get more wear out of your clothing.

Welcome to Winter 23

Falls Creek Cross Country has said welcome to winter this week, and just in time for the school holidays!

As we’ve gotten some fantastic grooming started on the XC trails it has been great to see you all out there making the most of the blue bird days and snow covered trails.

My name is Ella Jackson and I’m very happy to be back again this year to serve you your weekly dose of cross country news at Falls Creek and I very much welcome all of you to say hello and to get in touch with any XC stories or photos throughout the season.

It has to be said, the XC skiing trail system at Falls Creek is absolutely world class, and those of you who I ran into in Europe in January would I’m sure agree with me that we are certainly having better winter conditions here so far as well! Here’s hoping the rest of the winter will follow suit. This Week, expect the XC trails to be very colourful as we welcome the school holiday period to the XC trails. If you are a family looking for an alternative or additional activity to downhill skiing while you’re up here, or if you’ve been looking out the window and wondering “what’s out there?” I strongly encourage you to give a XC ski lesson a go. XC skiing is an awesome way to experience the snowy mountains in a different way by adventuring around parts of the High Plains that aren’t accessible by the chair lifts, and is always guaranteed to make unforgettable memories with friends and family.

This kicks off this Sunday, the 25th of June, and again next Saturday the 1st of July with Come and Try XC Skiing day’s hosted by the Telemark Nordic Ski Club. If you’re then interested in trying out your new found XC Skiing skills in a more competitive arena, Snow Trek & Travel are hosting the annual High Plains tour races the following weekend, on Saturday the 8th of July, offering 1km, 2.5km, 5km, and 10km race categories. Mid Year Band Concert

Come in from the cold and help the Mount Beauty and District Community Band celebrate its mid-year ‘Bandaid Concert’ on Saturday 24 June. Why ‘bandaid,’ you ask? To help the band recover from COVID cancellations, of course!

The program traditionally showcases some of the band’s talented soloists; this year is no exception. From the Ovens Valley, Jason and Rachel Campbell will entertain on the tuba and clarinet, and Robin Wood will impress on the xylophone in the quirkily named ‘The Joyful Skeleton.’ Talented trumpeter, Jeanette Teychenne, will mesmerise in ‘Cinema Paradiso,’ and accomplished flautist, Steve Scott, will captivate in ‘Rondo for Solo and Wind Band.’ Musical Director, Glenn Ramage, will also take a turn on his sweet-voiced

A Life to Remember

A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. What’s in a Name?

When you name your new business you try to consider all the connotations that name may have. Slides was named for the obvious reason that when you are going skiing you are going for a slide.

“Meet your for a slide” we say! “We’re off for a slide!” is another one. One always hopes it conjures up the positive image you are aiming for… think Harry Styles and his obvious style, think Elvis and try not to think of his pelvis, think North Face and think Dan Andrews. However be careful what might befall you.

With all guns blazing (or should it be all beans brewing) Julia was all set for a fantastic summer of trade after what can only be called a monumental first winter and then… the dreaded LANDSLIDE’ hits Falls Creek. Motherf%@#**!!!! So ‘what’s in a name?’ Well I’ll tell you.

In your first year of business you can’t help but look for those positive reviews. Surruptitious peaks at google to see how much love you’re getting; checking insta for all those likes. You know how it goes. Well lo and behold, type in Slides and you’re rewarded with the most damning reviews! Jump onto Google review only to find Major Road Projects Victoria announcing

catastrophic landslide blocks falls creek!!!! I press on. Type in Slides - and up comes landslide!

Slides coffee bar = major road blockage! Slides coffee = citizens evacuated! Slides Falls Creek = months ahead of disruption! OH MY GOD!

A road that is blocked, people tearing their hair out and not a coffee in the world will make this situ go away. What has happened to upset the PR gods I ask??? Who can I run to that will help me out of this marketing nightmare?? When will this end???

But then you remember that having a sense of humour and being part of such an amazing community makes it all fine again. Fast forward to June 2023 and the madness of the landslide is well behind us and we are ready to Slide into an amazing winter ahead.

Take it Home With You

It’s sad – but it keeps happening with evidence already along the roadside as the Victorian school holidays arrive. This littering makes this community – both off-mountain and in Falls - as mad as hell –and it is something we do not deserve. We love our area and we take care of our area. We have pride in our surroundings and we welcome the people who visit our area and ‘appreciate it!’

We certainly do not welcome people who think it is acceptable throw rubbish out anywhere – on the street, in the towns, in the National Park. If you can bring your take-away food and drink with you, you can take the empty containers (including

soiled nappies) back to a rubbish bin or to your bins at home. Nowhere in this country is rubbish acceptable.

Local Efforts

Over the years, several local residents have made it their mission to walk the roads and pick up litter. Their respect for the area is obvious and brilliant – but the reality is that these folk should not have spend their precious leisure time picking up after inconsiderate people who do not respect what they have around them.
