THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

From The Chief Operating Officer

No, the above title is not referring to the Geelong Cats current lack of form. That’s an entirely different article, albeit worthy post the absolute trouncing at the hands of the Carlton Blues last weekend. As any regular reader of this column knows, I’m a diehard Cats fan, but my loyalty was tested last weekend, to the point I started counting players to see if we had 18 on the field… because with rare exception few of the Geelong players actually held the ball for long!

Anyway, back to the elephant, snow and the outlook. Whilst there is a plethora of articles out there about El this, or La that and what is means for the SOI and how to predict snowfall, I thought I’d just present, for the more heuristic readers, a chart!

RESORT ENTRY PERMITS

A Resort Entry Vehicle Permit is required for your vehicle when entering the resort between Friday 7th June and Sunday 6th October 2024. The entrance to the resort is at Howman’s Gap, approximately 4km below the village. Permits can be pre-purchased and printed at home prior to arriving at the resort, or purchased at the resort entrance ticket office.

The day rate is $64 if you purchase your entry permit on-line. There is no extra charge for printing Resort Entry Permits at the Howman’s Gap Ticket Box. If arriving after 5pm and departing the resort prior to midnight on the same day, resort entry is free!

Season Entry Permits are available for purchase online for $599 and can be collected at Howman’s Gap Ticket Office or the Visitor Information Centre.

Resort Entry Fees fund the essential services of:

• Ski Patrol • Car Parking

• Water Supply • Snow Clearing

• Waste Management • Visitor Information Services

PLAN YOUR TRIP

Pre-purchasing Resort Entry Tickets and printing at home makes it faster and easier for you to get in to the resort.

Visitor Information Centre

The Falls Creek Visitor Information Centre is located upstairs in the Falls Creek Alpine Resort office, on the corner of Slalom Street and Snowgums Lane. Open Daily from 8am – 5pm for visitor information & gym memberships. Ph: 03 5758 1200. Map Ref: E4

Accommodation Transfer Service (ATS)

Operating from the Terminal Building on Bogong High Plains Road, the Accommodation Transfer Service will transport you, your group and your luggage to your accommodation in the village. Tickets can be pre-purchased online or at the ATS terminal.

Hours of Operation: Saturday – Thursday: 8am – 10pm Fridays: 8am – 12 midnight

This chart gives ten years’ worth of data, diligently compiled daily and managed by the Falls Creek Ski patrol team.

The takeaway here is that it snows every year, but when it starts, stops, or fades has about as much consistency and predictability as the Geelong midfield at the moment.

Every year is different and to draw comparisons is generally quite foolhardy. The professionals have enough trouble

Contact Falls Creek Alpine Resort via: Em: info.fallscreek@alpneresorts.vic.gov.au or Ph: 03 5758 1200

trying to get it right, so all I’ll say is, it will come when it comes. Unlike Geelong’s form, which pretty much looks to be done for the season (like Tom Hawkins season). As they say in footy, a week is a long time in football. So too in the snow fields. I’ve been doing this now for a decade and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, the outlook and weather can change in an instant.

The good thing is if you are reading this, you are either at the snow, in resort, or about to head up to the resort, which means you’re not at work, school or anywhere else, but Australia’s premier all seasons alpine resort. Paradise!

As we head into the holidays, this means the event program really starts to ramp up. There’s Twilight Tuesdays in the Village Bowl, night skiing Wednesdays and Saturdays, Fireworks every Thursday night, plus a host of competitions and events.

The best place to keep up to speed on what is happening is here: https://www.fallscreek. com.au/whats-on/?season=winter. The Falls Creek website is Choco bloc full of things to do, places to eat, experiences in the village, or read the Insider’s Guide to get a more in-depth idea of ways to help make your stay in our alpine village that little bit more special.

To help decide where to go for dinner tonight, the website has a smorgasbord of choices, but to ease searching my suggestion (this week at least) is below.

Foodie Tip of the Week:

I’d recommend the ‘Feeling Chilli’ menu, which is the Chef’s Choice dining

experience. Great for groups and oodles of food with something for everyone. Alternatively, al carte offers up some additional favourites and more side dishes, like the House Kimchi (sooooo good!), or the Fried Brussel Sprouts – who doesn’t love a side dish which is a super food. Any lover of great Southeast Asia cuisine will find plenty to their liking at Huski. All great restaurants blend the eating with drinking experience, and the Huski team have this sorted. The cocktail list has some unique but delicious offerings (hint: Hot

Miso Butter Rum – try stopping at one!). The wine list, both by the glass or bottle is extensive, with some absolute gems, covering local, regional and international varietals.

Bookings essential.

Righty ho…now get out there and carve the cord.

TIPS FOR SNOW DRIVING

Lights– ALWAYS have your lights on when driving in the snow. With the reduced visibility, you’ll want to make your surroundings as visible as possible. On the side, you’ll want other drivers to be able to see you as well. But, do not use high beam in fog or snow as it reflects back at you and reduces visibility.

NEVER Use Cruise Control - You’ll need extra vigilance and extra control when it comes to driving in the snow. Not only do you need to adjust your speed more frequently when driving in the snow, you’ll also need much more control over steering, even if you’re driving on a straight road. Never use cruise control when driving in the snow. Ever.

Avoid Slamming on the Brake– If your tires start to skid, most people’s first instinct is to panic and slam on the brake- don’t do this. Instead ease off the accelerator and try to steer the car out of potential collisions. Slamming on the brakes once your tires have already locked up and lost traction won’t help. Skidding out can be frightening, but try to stay as calm as possible in order to safely slow down and come to a stop.

Beware of Bridges– Bridges are the first to freeze and ice over in cold weather. Unlike roads which lose their temperature on their surface, bridges are exposed the wind and cold from underneath which promotes the perfect environment for black ice. Even if the roads seem okay in mild snow, use extra caution when you get to a bridge.

I DREAM OF SNOW

Number Two

By the end of winter 2023 I was officially knackered and couldn’t wait to shut up shop and have a wellearned rest. My husband & I had taken possession of the old Spa Q Day Spa in St Falls Resort on 21 April 2023, which gave us seven weeks till the opening weekend of the snow season and nine weeks till school holidays. Not a lot of time to turn a disused day spa into Falls Creek’s newest retail offering and Australia’s only vintage snow store.

In the end it took 10 weeks before I was ready to open, after completing Phase 1 of the renovations. I was aware, in March 2023 before settling, that we wouldn’t be able to complete all the renovation works that were needed, given the space available. I use the term we loosely. My husband demolished & rebuilt… I followed behind with a broom to reduce the risk of me accidently injuring myself while holding a tool.

Days

So, after I’d recovered from my first season in the shop, hubby and I got started on Phase 2 renovations over the 2023/24 green season. My magnificently handy hubby once more set to work with crowbar, saw and hammer. Walls came down, plaster dust flew… and got into EVERYTHING… and I hustled around binning building rubble, sweeping up and avoiding injury.

Winter 2024 is well and truly here according to the calendar, and as I type this the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting snow for the next seven days. Thank Ullr! We’re all waiting for some natural snow to fall. If you work in a snow business, all anyone has talked about to us for the past two months is what type of snow season 2024 and when the snow will or won’t arrive. It’s hard not to. However, sometimes you must look away from the crystal ball

Open Six Nights a Week (Closed Tuesdays)

A la carte and dégustation menu available

and just get on with getting your business ready for your customers.

I’m so excited to reveal the brand-new layout of I Dream Of Snow. The space is more open, lighter, brighter, and bigger. It’s now one of Falls Creek’s largest retail spaces now, tucked away on Level 1 of St Falls Resort West. It’s amazing and so many thanks must go to my hubby Ronan for being my go-to de-facto tradie extraordinaire, and my son Hamish for helping every time he was asked to (and with only the slightest teenage attitude. It was a masterclass in begrudging willingness).

I can’t wait to share the shop with everyone. I’ve got heaps of new product lines, and lots of new snowy stock as well as heaps of vintage jumpers, vintage snow suits (lots of one-piece suits as well as matching 2-piece suits), vintage snow pants, vintage jackets amongst the glorious vintage sporting equipment like wooden skis and toboggans.

You can see what’s happening in store on Instagram and Facebook. ‘Spot’ the dog is back as my Chief Happiness Officer and can’t wait to be your new best friend. Pats are always welcome, and Spot’s treat jar is full and waiting for you.

Opening hours are 10am – 6pm. Come in and say hello.

Cheers, Nyree

DEDERANG BESS UPDATE

Support from Local Pollies

The Friends of the Kiewa and Alpine Valleys Inc are incredibly grateful for the support we have received from the Member for Northern Victoria Region, Rikki-Lee Tyrell MLC (One Nation). We have also received ongoing support from our local state member, Tim McCurdy (Nationals), Senator Bridget McKenzie (Federal Nationals) and Wendy Lovell MLC (Liberals). Rikki-Lee, Tim and Bridget have made personal visits to Dederang and to residents’ properties to observe our concerns first-hand.

Both Rikki-Lee and Wendy articulated our case well in their speeches to Parliament. Tim has raised the issue in the Victorian Parliament several times. Senator Bridget McKenzie has also raised it in the Senate. Rikki-Lee and Wendy have raised it as an Adjournment Matter to the Minister on our behalf. They have requested the

Minister’s attendance at Dederang. We can only hope this makes a difference and that the Planning Minister, Sonya Kilkenny, will see fit to attend as requested.

Across the country there seems to be a disconnect in regional centres and cities about the scale of renewable developments in rural areas. In Victoria, the government is openly admitting it could be up to 70% of agricultural land in the state. What will be left? There is genuine concern from some of our politicians and we are extremely grateful that they are speaking up, making an impact, and caring about individuals and the community in Dederang.

Tyrrell stands up for Dederang Community

Member for Northern Victoria Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell has thrown her support behind the Dederang community who are concerned about the building of two Battery Energy Storage System projects earmarked for the region.

Residents are concerned the projects are planned to be built on prime agricultural land that will permanently alter the landscape of their region forever.

Speaking during the adjournment debate in State Parliament, Mrs Tyrrell highlighted the poor consultation with

WELCOME BACK

the local community amid allegations of intimidation and threats by developers.

“I have been informed that the consultation by the projects developers with the people of Dederang has consisted of just one public meeting,” Mrs Tyrrell said.

“Worse than that, I have had reports of threats and intimidation by representatives of the developers, even threatening the region will be lumbered with a nuclear reactor if people don’t embrace the battery projects.”

“These threats are not only absurd but completely inappropriate and should play no part in genuine community consultation,” Mrs Tyrrell said.

In her contribution, Mrs Tyrrell extended an invitation to the Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny to join her to meet the Dederang community members personally to hear their concerns.

“The people of Dederang feel their concerns on these Battery Energy Storage System projects are being ignored and I think the Minister needs to listen to the local community for herself,” Mrs Tyrrell said.

“The community are outraged at the tactics used by developers, and I look forward to Ms Kilkenny joining me to hear their views.” •

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been cross country skiing at Falls Creek. I live in Mount Beauty and every weekend for the whole of winter, we’d be up at Falls Creek skiing and sometimes racing, even when I was really little. It didn’t matter what the weather was like or how much snow was actually on the ground, we’d still be up there and having a good time. More recently, I’ve become more serious about racing. I started online schooling 3 years ago so that I have more time and flexibility to train both in Australia and overseas. I’m on the Australian Junior National

In October, I began my European trip with biathlon training and racing for two months. In late December I joined the pre-Youth Winter Olympic games camp in Slovenia, run by Snow Australia. For two weeks, we trained in Planica, dealing with patchy snow and occasional rain. YOUTH WINTER OLYMPICS

much better, with temperatures around -10°C most days. While there, we raced in an Austrian cup in Saafelden and did a few day trips to Toblach, Italy for a change of scene.

The four of us athletes and a coach caught the plane from Vienna to Korea on the 24th of January and we were in Korea for about eight days. When we got there, we had a four-hour bus trip from Seoul to Gangwon. The Olympic village was university campus accommodation usually and was about a 45 minutes bus trip from the race venue. While there were still a lot of athletes there from other countries, most of the Australian athletes had already gone home or left very soon after we arrived, as the games had started about a week earlier and many had already finished competing.

We had a day off when we first arrived to adjust to the time zone and then had two days of training at the race venue before the races started. The venue itself was built for the biathlon at the 2018 Pyeong Chang Olympics, like many of the facilities that we were using. The first race was a skate sprint, about 1km. The whole team raced well with no hiccups and all of us coming about mid field. I came 43rd. The next day was a classic 10km, three laps of a 3.3km loop. There were some quite fast downhills and hard corners, but whole team had practiced them multiple times since we arrived, so everyone went into the race confident that there wouldn’t be any issues. I came 38th, which was a big improvement as I was ranked 70th in the field. We then had a day off from racing, followed by the 4 x 5km mixed relay. The format was first two starters classicskied and second two skated, with starters alternating girl/boy. I was the first starter and so I skied classic. We were ranked last

out of all the countries, but we raced hard and made up quite a few places, with our team finishing 18th. It was good experience for all of us, as none of us had done an international cross-country relay before.

That night was closing ceremony, which was a bit of a whirlwind of uniform and badge swapping, before we left super early the next morning on a bus back to Seoul. From there, our team went our separate ways, some heading back to Australia, while myself and a few others headed back to Europe. I did more racing and training for biathlon, including racing at Biathlon Youth Junior World Championships in Estonia at the end of February. I came back to Australia on the 5th of March.

I hope to translate these racing and training experiences into strong results in the Australian Winter season. This Australian Winter I’ll be training and racing at Falls Creek and Hotham again as part of both the Australian junior cross-country team and the Australian junior biathlon team, prior to returning to Europe for more racing in the coming northern hemisphere Winter.

Long term I have my sights set on representing Australia at the Winter Olympics. •
