SAFETY NEVER TAKES A DAY OFF
From The Chief Operating Officer
When people ask me ‘what do you do’, my general response is, “the resort management team identify, assess and seek to control risk.”
But don’t you run a ski resort? Well, actually, we manage Australia’s premier all seasons resort! And, as a crown land manager, there’s a lot of more to it than just skiing (Fact – I’m lucky to ski more than 10x a season and mostly that’s work, not pleasure). Yeah, whoa is me. Save it. I love the industry and all that is does, the people, the tribal culture and the shared joy that snowsports bestows on its crazy disciples.
But seriously, risk mitigation and monitoring risk occupies more management time than anything else. It’s a big resort, 1535ha of ‘managed’ terrain,
on top of a mountain and spread across the High Plains via the trails outside our boundary into the National Park. There are roads, car parking, public facilities, trails,

essential infrastructure, more buildings that you think, sensitive alpine flora and fauna, let alone the big machinery that plies, often well into the night and throughout the day clearing, grooming, transporting thousands of people, kilometres and tonnes – daily. But, critical and central to monitoring risk is a decent roster of loyal and regular full time and seasonal staff, into which risk culture is indoctrinated.
Then there’s what happens on the snow. Speaking of which, next time you see Falls Creek employees in black jackets, black and blue jackets, or a derivative of – they are pretty much the operations team. These guys and gals from Falls Creek Ski Lifts work across snowmaking, grooming,

parks and specialist operational teams that keep everything turning, whirring, corded up and creating miracles out of thin air. The bulk of the product out there at the moment, is because of their hard work, diligence and outstanding dedication these teams apply. Most of it, usually when you’re out having après, dinner or sleeping. Their hours aren’t particularly social, but the work they do is essential to everything that makes a day on the snow, better than anything that you could possibly imagine. So, next time you see them, thank them, buy them a coffee (or libation of their choice), and well done to the team on the outstanding product we have. It is unquestionably the best in Australia.
The other prominent members of the safety team on snow are the ski patrollers. They are out and about, every day, in all types of weather conditions, identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks. What they do is for your safety. They mark it, sign it, close it, or actively manage speed control, and that’s before they pick you, or patch you up. The Alpine Responsibility Code exists for a reason. It’s the ten commandments of snow sport. If you’re not familiar, check is out here: https://www.snowsafe.org.au/ alpiner-esponsibility-code. If you’re unlucky enough to need the ski patrol team, you can rest assured the FC team are an eclectic bunch of guys and gals from varied and diverse backgrounds, the bulk of which have 15+ years of experience and training (not to mention most are fire fighters, doctors, nurses, police, ambo’s, tradies, engineers, ex professional athletes etc or pro patrollers). If a sign says, “Area Closed” –it’s closed. If the team don’t think it’s safe, there’s a reason… don’t duck the rope, it could be the dumbest thing you do on ski’s, a snow board, or toboggan.
Finally, safety is a jointly owned

Date night, done right at Falls Creek’s newest Mediterranean and European dining experience. Sister restaurant to Ory’s (presumably hence the name). The first Mrs S and I headed out sans young adults, to sample the diverse offering. Ideally designed around a communal table, and to share, the dishes are voluminous. A shared Tartare – divine, The Whole Fish (Rainbow trout and XO sauce) – this was so large we got a doggie bag, Porterhouse medium rare (they had me at truffle mash) …oh, grated black truffle can be added to any dish… SHIP IT IN. Our veggie of choice - chat potatoes. We rolled out. But not before sampling the wine offering to wash down the delicious food. A great selection. Something for everyone with a choice select offer from well priced local drops to ‘special’ selections worthy of a celebration! Don’t forget,

SIZE AND FIT
It’s about Comfort
The reality of clothing sizes is that it varies greatly. Within Australia, and I believe internationally, there is no regulation of clothing sizes that manufacturers must follow.
The debate over sizing is an emotional one, especially right now, when so many shoppers are rejecting labels of all kinds, from sexual orientation to gender to, yes, size. For decades, major retailers have generally catered to one (white, slim) consumer even as the world has gotten more diverse.
As a vintage retailer, I see clothes labels from past decades that bear no reality to the current shape and size of most of the world’s population. What was a Ladies size 12 in the 1970’s may fit a contemporary Ladies size 8, or a Ladies 14 in the 1960’s may fit a current Ladies 8-10. And believe you me, it creates a level of frustration in the shopping public that is not always easily soothed.
So, what is the reason for the variation in sizes? There are couple of things at play. Firstly, we’re all a lot bigger these days than our parent or grandparents were back in their day. The increased availability reasonably priced pre-packaged & fast food means that we’re often consuming more calories than we’re burning in our day-today activities. Additionally, the modern person is more sedentary than their parents and grandparents’ generation.
Secondly, studies have shown that shoppers prefer to buy clothing labelled with small sizes because it boosts our confidence. So as the weight of the average person rose, from 63kg in 1960 to 76.4kg in 2014, brands adjusted their metrics to help more of us squeeze into sizes that flattered out egos (while also getting us to buy more clothes). Over time this created a fashion ‘arms race’ so to speak, and retailers went to extremes trying to one-up one another. By the late 2000s, standard sizes had become so forgiving that designers introduced new ones (0, 00) to make up the difference. This was a workable issue—albeit an annoying one—so long as people shopped in physical stores with help from staff who knew which sizes ran big and small.
The issue of ‘vanity sizing’ is responsible for sizes changing over time, which makes it more difficult to shop for vintage or secondhand. So although people have, generally, got bigger over the past 50 years, size numbers have got smaller: data from the Washington Post in 2015 found a US size 8 dress (a UK 12) to be nearly the equivalent of a US 16 (UK 20) in 1958.
So where does that leave you & me as consumers? Well, I try and follow a few self-
imposed rules that I’ve taught myself over two decades of collecting vintage:
1. Have an open mind about how the item will fit in comparison to its size label (if there even is one! Could be home-made).
2. Don’t force a zipper in the change room. If it doesn’t want to do up, let it go (metaphorically and physically).
3. Remember that most vintage has been worn and laundered, and that this can alter a garments shape over time sometimes stretching or shrinking items.
4. Your value as a person is not measured by a number on a label.
If you’re a vintage clothing lover, or even just curious to see my collection of vintage snow clothes, come on in and have a browse. All the clothing that is for sale is also available for rent, but none of the items for rent are available for sale.
You can see what’s happening in store on Instagram and Facebook.
Opening hours are 10am – 6pm. Come in and say hello. •

BRITT COX – An Olympian's Guide to Falls Creek
Falls Creek is a cherished destination for four-time Winter Olympian and 2017 World Champion Britt Cox.
“I feel so lucky to have grown up on the mountain at Falls Creek,” Cox reminisces. “Dad driving me to school on the snowmobile and then rushing out the school gates to get in a few runs with my brother before the lifts closed—it’s a very special place to have spent my childhood and laid a strong foundation for my skiing career”.
The allure of Falls Creek brings her back year after year for three main reasons: the mountains, the community, and, of course, the skiing. “I’m a mountain kid at heart, and there’s something really freeing and cathartic about coming home to the high country,” she explains. The strong community at Falls Creek has always been a source of support and connection for her. “Falls has a strong community of locals, and I always felt such a boost knowing I had their support throughout my competitive career. It’s always fun to come back and connect with everyone.” And, naturally, there’s the skiing. “I will never get sick of the feeling of gliding down the mountain on my skis, whether it’s winding my way through The Maze after a fresh dump of snow or burning some fast groomers down Scott’s. There’s always fun to be had”.
What sets Falls Creek apart from other ski resorts is its unique ski-in ski-out access throughout the village. “I probably took this for granted growing up,” Cox admits, “but it wasn’t until I started to travel that I truly came to appreciate how bloody awesome this is”. “All the streets are completely covered in snow in the winter, which creates a lovely Euro ski town feel” she adds.
When it comes to her favorite runs, Cox has the inside scoop. “On a powder day, you’ll find me in The Maze. For some fast early morning groomers, I’ll be over the back on Scott’s or Ruined Castle. But straight down the Slot on the Summit is and always will be my favorite run on the mountain” she reveals. The Summit holds a special place in her heart, bringing back childhood memories of chasing her big brother down the slopes. “I still remember
the first day my parents let me ride up the Summit Chairlift and chase my big brother Hamish down there when we were little.”
When it comes to refueling on the slopes, Cox recommends, “for lunch, I love to stop in at Ory’s. They have great coffee too,” she says. “For dinner, there are some amazing chefs all over the mountain. From Huski and Lakeside Lodge to Powder Keg and 1550 at St Falls, we are very spoiled for choice in terms of dining.”
Après at Falls Creek is another experience unto itself, especially at Attunga. “A Falls Creek sunset is something else, and there’s no better place to enjoy it than relaxing over après at Attunga. It has a stunning view over the mountain and down the valley. When the sky turns it on, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy a drink and nibbles after a day out on the mountain.”
Beyond the winter months, Cox highlights that Falls Creek transforms into a beautiful summer destination. “Falls is also such a beautiful summer destination. I highly recommend heading up during the warmer months to explore the epic network of mountain bike trails and stunning hikes around the mountain. If you look hard enough, you might even stumble upon the secret rock pools.”
Falls Creek’s rich history of producing winter sport athletes is another aspect that
makes it remarkable for Cox. “Alongside myself, the mountain has produced a collection of Olympians such as Paul and Adrian Costa, Ross and Malcolm Milne, Joanne Henke, Jenny Altermatt, Steven Lee, Dick Walpole, Chris Heberle, Phil Bellingham, Paul Murray, and Esther Bottomley” Cox proudly notes. She believes that the supportive community at Falls Creek has played a significant role in helping these athletes realise their dreams.
For Britt Cox, Falls Creek is more than just a ski resort. It’s a place of happy memories, a supportive community, and exhilarating skiing. Whether navigating powder in The Maze, or enjoying the summer trails, Falls Creek remains a must-visit destination for this Winter Olympian and World Champion. •
In the windswept Southern Mountains out by Bogong’s brow
Is a land that’s never felt the rip of tractor nor of plough
The flowers and native grasses stretch from sky to sky
Unmarred by Man’s destruction – farming passed it by.
For the raging winter blizzards stayed the axe and chain
And spared the Bogong High Plains from the awful bloody pain
Of the clearing and the torching and the weeds and salt and dust
BOGONG RY'S
Of the foreign crops a-growing, filled with mites and rust.
And then the spring-time melts the snows, and the swollen brooks are gushing Into creeks and mighty rivers – to the Murray they go rushing Daisies are a carpet, Black Cockies screech on by The parakeets are dashing through the crystal of the sky.
The seasons keep on rolling, but the High Plains stay the same
Through the scorching summer days to the icy winter rain
People seldom visit, unless it’s peace they seek
And lovers swear their wedding vows out by Watchbed Creek.
Now mortals come and go in the twinkling of an eye
It only takes a moment beneath the mountain sky
But the snow gums grow forever and the granite weathers slow
In the freezing winter winds, beneath the ice and snow.
Yes the cycle keeps on turning, yet the land remains the same

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS
water, such as dirt can impact how our skis perform. The strength of fluorinated waxes was not only their water repelling properties, but their ability to repel dirt and other materials. The challenge of fluor free waxing is not only repelling moisture but also keeping our skis clean, particularly in longer races.
K: Must be an exciting time in America with the continued success of both the women’s US Ski team and now the men’s, how has that helped foster coaching and waxing roles in American skiing?
J: There’s a saying from former US President John F. Kennedy, “rising tides lifts all boats”. Success at the highest levels of sport does help bring excitement and energy to all levels of skier, from our youngest to our master’s level skier. The more investment in our sport at all levels supports those who have chosen to make it their career.
K: I am sure many xc skiers here at Falls Creek would love to get some waxing advice from you. Do you have any quick tips you can give us to get our skis ready for the season?
J: A clean ski is a fast ski! While you’re skiing, the accumulation of dirt is typically the first thing to slow your skis down. We can keep our skis clean by taking a few steps.
1. Make sure your wax room is tidy and clean up any dust left over after waxing.
2. Use a solvent based glide cleaner after skiing.
3. Use clean tools while working on your skis, which may mean replacing your old brushes.
4. When deciding what wax to apply to your skis, generally apply the colder or harder
waxes as they do a better job repelling dirt for day-to-day skiing.
And there you have it! Some great advice for the winter, I know will think about applying a harder base wax to my skis for the season. As any repelling of dirt will certainly make my life a little easier in training.
Give Jacob a warm welcome if you see him out on the trail and I am sure he would not mind dishing out a wax tip or two... Especially leading into some races and the Hoppet!
