LET’S GET THE PARTY STARTED
From the Chief Operating Officer
They say 12 months is a long time, well we couldn’t be happier to move on, and welcome you to Season 2024. It’s going to be a beauty.
Having written this “Welcome to Winter” for the last 10 seasons, I thought I’d look back at the variance over this time in opening weekend celebrations, where or what runs were skiable, the opening dates (we’ve jump-started a few), how much snow had fallen prior to opening etc… but honestly, on opening weekend, not much of it really matters. We are all here to celebrate another great season, the skiing, it’s just a bonus.
Don’t get me wrong, for those of us that work here (the resort), opening weekend is a bit like Christmas day when you were (or may still be) a child. It’s full of anticipation,
RESORT ENTRY PERMITS
excitement, and expectation. The planning, the on-boarding, the last minute ‘curve balls’ all add to the buzz of seeing the season kick off.
Remember, all snow seasons are great, just some are greater than others. The good thing about Falls Creek is, how you experience it is really up to you. There’s no shortage of things to do. The village is choco bloc full of restaurants, bars, day spas and a physio, coffee spots, street food, a tonne of retail therapy outlets and that’s just before you adventure on piste!
Falls Creek has the largest area of lifted terrain in Victoria, as well as the largest network of snow making ability. So, even if the snow gods are a little late, or a little light on in the natural snow department, the phenomenal team at Falls Creek Ski Lifts, who’ve invested plenty into capacity this year, will ensure that if it can be made, it will be! Then when the storms

By the time you’ve read this, a bevy of brave souls will have completed the annual “Ice Plunge” on June 1st, sacrificing ourselves to the snow gods, and setting the season up for success. It’s my 8th, having only missed two due to COVID and a knee operation! Worth noting, the two I’ve missed (2020 and last year) – the snow that season has been pretty average…just saying! It’s for a great cause with proceeds raised for Fight MND. A huge shout-out to all the businesses who’ve contributed to the prizes too.
Whilst we like to declare the seasons as white and green, the latter is often blended with ‘construction’ season. This year has been no different. As always, our stakeholders continue to invest into the resort ensuring its status as the best alpine village in Australia is maintained.
Of particular note, this year the biggest investment has been at Cloud 9… I won’t spoil it, but boy have they done a pile of work. Amazingly, they’re still not done with the full makeover, (although you really can’t tell) with another round to go ahead of the 2025 winter. I’m already confident in saying that the facility is the jewel in the crown re on-piste facilities anywhere in the southern hemisphere. Congrats to the Traverse Alpine Group, all the trades, especially the Duggan and Hanlon team and Falls Creek Ski Lifts for an outstanding effort.
Other notable works have been throughout the village, St Falls has been a hive of activity all summer, Cooroona are preparing for their expansion, the resort team have put in even more car parking, re-sealed existing hotspots, upgrading essential service infrastructure, upgrading the Panabode building adding an additional day shelter, new bathrooms and making it fully accessible for visitors and more.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t also thank the amazing work done by the Whelans team

and Major Road Projects Victoria on the reparations to the landslip site and Bogong High Plains road. The entire team who worked on that project went above and beyond to restore a seamless drive up the mountain. So, from all of us here, thank you.

Fabulous Ice Plunge
Last Saturday, June 1st, 2024, we welcomed the first day of winter with the 17th Annual Ice Plunge! Over 130 people took on the challenge making it one of our biggest to date!
As per tradition, over 130 locals and visitors kicked off the first day of winter with their annual Ice Plunge. The tradition sees over 100 fancy-dressed locals and visitors plunge into the sub 3° degree waters of Rocky Valley Lake, sitting at an altitude of 1600m above sea level. Our alpine community’s iconic tradition is an offering to the snow gods - a plea for an abundantly snowy season ahead. The event is also a part of Fight MND’s Big Freeze 10 campaign which has seen communities, workplaces and clubs all over Australia plunge into their own icy waters.
Participants were treated to Haut Hutt saunas by the lake, warm coffee and hot toddies, courtesy of Bright Brewery after their brave sacrifice into the 3° degree waters.
Local stakeholders generously donated over $3000 worth of prizes. These rewards were given to plungers who either caught a duck during the event or were recognised for their best-dressed attire. Prizes included restaurant vouchers, lift tickets, lessons, resort entry season permits, Bright Brewery Beers, and stylish sunglasses and snow goggles from Pit Viper Australia.
All proceeds raised from this event will be donated to Fight MND, an extraordinary organisation dedicated to finding a cure for Motor Neuron Disease. Thanks to the generous contributions from event participants, donations and merchandise sales, we have already raised over $3000 and our fundraising efforts will continue throughout the season. If you’re in Falls
Creek this winter, be sure to visit our Information Centre to purchase your official Big Freeze 10 Merchandise!
Mount Beauty local Ken Edmonson and his family showcased their unwavering dedication to the Fight MND cause with their “Bumble Bee for MND” adorned HX Holden (not Honda) Panel Van. The Edmonson’s have raised over $30,000 in one short year to help families, like theirs, affected by Motor Neuron Disease.
Now, as we slip in to King’s Birthday Weekend, our mountain village is about to become alive with Village Street Parties featuring visits from The Connected Circus and Pete the Snow Dragon, a dazzling Fireworks display Saturday evening, exciting kid’s activities, restaurant openings, live music and DJ sessions! Check out our Opening Weekend What’s On Guide for the full list of festivities – or continue to delve into the pages of this fine publication for all of the news on the mountain and in the valley. FALLS CREEK PRIMARY
New 24 hour Defibrillator
The Falls Creek Primary School is excited to announce they have recently received a community grant totalling $3,150 from the Kiewa Mitta Murray Community Enterprises Limited Bendigo Community Bank.
This grant money will be used to install an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on the outside of the school building. It will allow easy access for School Users during school hours if required and also the broader Falls Creek Community and our guests with the Defib being located on the external part of the school building –offering 24-hour access.
Currently the closest public AED to the School part of the Village is currently a 5 to 15 minute walk depending on whether snow covers the road. Ambulance response times can vary enormously depending on the season (in summer the closest ambulance is Mount Beauty) and again the road conditions have an impact whether they be snow covered or not.
Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the most pressing and serious injuries, which is why delays in ambulance response times can lead to a series of complications. For each minute that passes without CPR or defibrillation, the chance of survival falls by 10%. Conversely, if CPR and defibrillation are given within the first few minutes of the arrest, the chances of survival can increase up to 60%. This prevents deterioration and keeps the person stable until an ambulance/ paramedics arrive.
The Mount Beauty & District Community Bank is a great asset for the local communities providing awardwinning financial products and services and returning it profits to our local communities, a ‘win win’ on all accounts! •
Art Supplies– Thanks Whelans
In addition, our road fixing team, the Whelan’s Group, on hearing that that the school was trying to raise funds, also jumped in and donated their $213 raised from their bottle and recycling efforts.
This money has allowed the school to purchase much need new watercolour paints for the school, with Whelans once again supporting this community. The Students were extremely happy to see the new paint supplies arrive at school and to then put them to use!
The students at Falls Creek Primary School have seen the Bogong High Plains Road landslip go through its mammoth transformation. Earlier this year they enjoyed an interactive session with a visit from Whelan’s to the primary school where they learnt about the benching techniques
used to remediate the landslip and stop material from reaching the road.
The Falls Creek Primary School staff and students would once again like to show their gratitude for this support and highlight how lucky we are to be a part of such a supportive community. •
DEDERANG BESS UPDATE
Keep Working Together
The Friends of the Kiewa and Alpine Valleys continue to advocate for responsible renewables in appropriate areas.
There are signs like ours popping up all over rural Victoria. It is not just the Alpine Valleys that are under siege. Rural and farming life is threatened in the pursuit of the energy transition in Australia. There are dozens of Facebook, Whats App and Community groups fighting for their homes and lands across Victoria. So many families are impacted. 70% of our State is required!!! Multi-national companies are ransacking our agricultural lands and our wilderness areas. The Government is allowing this to happen without any regard to the communities of rural Australia or the responsibility of decommissioning at end of life.
Forests of wind towers, blankets of solar panels and thousands of lithium batteries are invading the Victorian landscape. According to experts, to get to 100% renewables, apparently what has happened to date is just
the beginning. All this is for climate changewhich must be addressed, but consider that Australia contributes to approximately 1% of world emissions. Not an excuse to do nothing but definitely a reason to pause and consider what is happening to the landscape and the future of agriculture and rural living. Our group had the opportunity to brief the Alpine Shire Council a few weeks ago. All Councillors, Directors and the CEO were present to hear our concerns for the whole of the Shire. This is not just a Dederang issue. Farmers and landholders continue to be approached up and down the Valleys. Every vision and mission statement, strategy and land management document from the Catchment Management Authority, Alpine Shire and Hume Region that you read talks about sustainable growth in balance with the environment and protecting our diversity, our agricultural land and our waterways. The Alpine Valleys are catchments for the Murray-Darling Basin. Much of the land is protected by significant landscape overlays.
Recently our Alpine Shire CEO, Mr Jeremy stated that we have a beautiful place and that many people visit here and move here for the landscape. This is spot on. This is one of the facets that we have been focused on in our presentations. The liveability and amenity of rural lifestyle blocks will be heavily impacted by renewable energy infrastructure if it infiltrates our valleys.
Renewable Energy Companies are driving around our Valleys trying to sign up landholders and give no consideration to the already existing Significant Landscape Overlays. They just sign them up anyway. This is deeply concerning. We are yet to
see if this has an impact on the decision to approve planning permits by the Minister. Time will tell! And we have no right of appeal through VCAT. Our fight is about the future of our Alpine Valleys as a collective. It’s not like they can ever be replaced.
Last month the CEO of Alinta Energy said at the National Press Gallery that Australians must face the hard truth that renewable energy will cost more. Yet the Government have continually told us that the transition will drive down energy prices. Recently they have announced a $300 rebate for households on their electricity bills. Awesome for households this year, but not sustainable going forward.
What is the future of our vista? There are so many unknowns. Here at Dederang there are twenty families within 400m to 2km of the Lithium Battery proposals. It is a high-risk bushfire area and the two proposals are across and close to creeks. Families and farms rely on the groundwater that comes out of these areas. How will that be impacted? No answers. What is happening to the liveability of our communities? No answers. We met with Mint renewables on May 18th, yet they provided no answers on how they will mitigate impacts such as noise, visual amenity and possible impact on waterways. It has taken six months of negotiating to get them to meet with us as a group of impacted residents and neighbours. They only allowed 21 individuals to attend this meeting. Yet their brochures and website say “We know that for our projects to be successful, we must have the support of key stakeholders.” Neighbours and community are a priority they say. The Trina solar website is similar. We will see!

FALL LINES
About the book: ‘Snow, Fire and Gold’
‘Snow, Fire and Gold’ tells the story of Spargo’s Hut, and the people that lived in it - alpine gold prospector Bill Spargo and his English wife, Evelyn Piper.
I first heard of Spargo’s Hut, above the snow-line near Mt Hotham, in 1972, but did not get a chance to visit it until 1982. I knew it had been abandoned for many years, but was shocked to discover it was still jammed full with all the articles required for everyday living. There was a bed and pillow, table and chairs, a pair of boots, an overcoat, an umbrella, large
saws and other tools, pots and pans, a Coolgardie safe, an extensive collection of crockery and cutlery, a cheese grater, a fly spray pump, an oven mitt, a golf putter, a framed picture of a sailing ship hanging on the wall, and a cupboard full of books and magazines. There was also much else. It looked as though a woman had lived there, not just a man.
In 1987 I returned to the hut and conducted as full as possible a photographic inventory of all the items inside it. I also successfully nominated Spargo’s Hut for registration with Heritage Victoria (then the Historic Buildings Council).
I was given photographs, personal letters, and other relevant documents.
The arrival of Trove in recent years also allowed me to access many old newspaper articles that contained information about Bill and Evelyn.
About the author
I resolved to learn as much as possible about the people who had lived there, and why. I spent much of 1987 and 1988 crisscrossing country Victoria with a micro cassette tape recorder, interviewing anyone I could find who had known Bill and/or Evelyn. I spoke to former chalet managers, skiing pioneers, gold prospectors and miners, road makers, cattlemen, and many others. I spoke to descendants of Bill’s family, and also tracked down Evelyn’s descendants in England.

Strength to Strength
Three seasons in, and stage three of Lakeside Lodge’s renovations are complete. With only one stage to go, finally the end is in sight.
As we prepare to open for our fourth season this weekend, it’s a good chance to look back at the ride we have had so far. When we moved to Falls Creek in March 2021, we, along with most of the state - thought that the horrors of Covid-19 were behind us. We set to work, aiming to bring Lakeside back to its former glory. With only 10 weeks to get ready for our first opening, the task list was formidable, and looking back - comical! We arrived with a moving truck full of 22 new toilets, vanity sinks, tapware, fresh white linen and drums and drums of paint. Covering the pink and yellow walls, followed by the blue and red doors and architraves was our first priority. Ripping up the cookie monster blue velour carpet, replacing it with a neutral grey, and covering the bright red mosaic tiles came next. Then the installation of said toilets, and complete re-wiring of the building, had us getting to know the local trades very well. Actually, we wouldn’t be where we are today without them. We are so grateful to the community and their support
and mentorship through the whole process! On opening day 2021 with a cast of many friends and family, we checked in our first guests in paint spattered clothes while our ‘support crew’ threw tools, paint brushes and allen keys into any spare cupboard they could find. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and we were shut down for one of the many covid lockdowns we were to endure that season - the rush to get everything done seemed - well, pointless. The following summer saw us renovate the bar, lounge and eatery and upgrade our housekeeping and laundry facilities. The next summer was a significant facelift for the hot tub, sauna and steam room, and all of the windows and doors replaced with BAL rated double glazed glass.
This summer has seen us finally be rid of those red mosaic tiles for good. Every guest room bathroom has had a complete facelift. And, the external walls of the building have been painted and clad. Like an impatient child though, we now cannot wait to get the last of the works underway. A brand new entry, levelled to the road (no more walking the plank!), will commence work in November, creating a gorgeous covered space for our guests arrival.
LAKESIDE LODGE
In the meantime, we down tools for another winter, and embrace the snow as it arrives. Our focus turns from renovations, to hospitality, we do what we love, and what we are ultimately here for. The love of the mountain, the snow, and the people. •
Well done Michelle, Lyndon and young Grady. Family run businesses are an asset to the community. Ed. •

This publication has run similar articles before. And we will probably continue to run them each year. Your editor would hate to think that someone working or visiting this fabulous resort of ours ends up with a three or four thousand dollar bill for transport to hospital. It can and does happen – and it can be prevented. Read on.
Previously we have quoted figures for this article. But, even without them, the common sense aspect of ambulance insurance is a ‘no-brainer.’
As an example of costs, your editor had a little hearty turn at Falls Creek during the Trade Fair @ Falls Creek. The fabulous and professional Ski Patrol team, from Patrol Director and several others attended – and will it was a tad embarrassing from my point of view, it was certainly eye opening and satisfying to witness first-hand the skill and professionalism all member exhibited.
Then it was into the Ambo and down to Alpine Health Mount Beauty. The good news is after and ECG and some blood tests, everything was looking good and home we went. Thanks team for a great job well done.
Then came the next bit. Several days later the invoice from Ambulance Victoria arrived (see image) – a total of $1927 to travel from Falls Creek Mount Beauty, Thank goodness I did not need to go to Albury or Malbourne.
The good news is that I do have Ambulance Cover (and have had for many years) and a quick phone call and Email to Ambulance Victoria sorted it.

It has been loaned out –and not returned. This is a vital piece of the history of this area and it would be fabulous to have it returned. Any news, please call 0400 350 488.
WHY AMBULANCE SUBSCRIPTION
The Good News
Fact Number One: Ambulance membership is cheap. A family membership is now $103.88 per year. A single person membership is now $51.94 per year. In my humble opinion, these figures are way too cheap – but no-one can ever say they could not afford Ambulance Membership.
A clever and innovative local lodge manager, as part of his employment contract would include an Ambulance Membership Form – which (unless they could show they were already covered) the employees had to sign – and the payment came out of their first wage cheque. This would be regarded in most circles as excellent management/staff relations. The following is an excellent example of the benefits of membership – as quoted by Angus. “I got ambulance cover just before heading off with my mates on a snowboarding trip to Mt Buller. I had been thinking about cover and thought I’d be unlikely to need it but had a few minutes free so opened my laptop and joined online in the car park of the campsite. It took me five minutes and was really easy and really cheap - especially compared to the other ski field costs. We had a great weekend but my trip ended abruptly when I ran out of talent, came off a jump and broke three ribs and collapsed a lung.

SENIORS FACEBOOK
I’ve Got This
For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend why Facebook exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles.
Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before and with whom and what I will do later in the day. I give them pictures of my family, my dog and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them “thumbs up” and tell them I “like” them. And
it works just like Facebook. I already have four people following me: two Police Officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist! •
