MTB de FEMME Another Ripper Weekend
W
ell yes, it turned out to be a ripper weekend, but that freezing wet Saturday arvo didn’t help. But, a good dinner and a good night’s sleep meant that Sunday was much better and everyone got right into it. With lots of volunteers ready, Falls Creek was set to stage the 4th annual MTB de Femme over the weekend. The MTB de Femme has grown from an initial “the guys are riding – but where are the girls? Jess Douglas was an ambassador for the event, sharing tips and inspiration to females attending and the Falls Creek Facebook page has a great video well worth watching. Jess also hosted a Q&A panel dinner on the Saturday night with a majority of participants in attendance.
As well as the shuttles, Sunday featured a mass picnic ride to the grounds of the iconic Wallace’s Hut, one of the oldest cattlemen’s huts in the region built in led by Diggers marching down Hollonds Street last year,
1889 and picnic provided by Lisa Logan at Diana Lodge. Many thanks to the fabulous event team at Falls Creek Resort Management who could not be more pleased with the event and are looking forward to staging its 5th year in 2020. Thanks also to the many volunteers who helped make the event happen. It is this community spirit that puts Falls Creek toward the top of the list for staging great fun and successful events. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2019 Edition EIGHT
THE BIRDCAGE Dederang Races
R
estaurateur Barry Iddles has come up with an event that will enhance the guest experience at the annual Dederang Country Picnic Race Meeting. Iddles has borrowed an idea that has been very popular with racegoers at the annual Melbourne Cup Carnival. A Dederang-style Birdcage will accommodate approximately 150 punters dressed to impress. Access will only be permitted to those who prepurchase a ticket and the identity of the celebrity guests will remain a secret. “I love country race meetings and it’s fantastic to be able to bring the birdcage style and class to Dederang,” said Barry. “A lavish marquee with fresh flowers, strapping wait staff, a stunning lobster, chicken & beef buffet luncheon & bubbles including beers and wines will add another element to the Dederang Race Club’s single largest fundraising activity for all the local sporting and community clubs each year.” As a result of extreme temperatures
experienced last year, the meeting has been PRICELESS
moved from its traditional first Saturday in January with this year’s Mount Beauty & District Community Bank Dederang Races taking place on Saturday March 16th. Amy van de Ven, a member of the Dederang Race Club management committee said: “We’re super excited to be able to offer our race goers a fully cateredfor Marquee with such a fantastic offering. With the change of date to March we understand we are potentially targeting a new market of race goers that are looking for the catered option and it’s working with people like Barry who have an idea and being able to bring it to life, it’s something we are all very excited about.” Amy added “We will still have all our usual activities such as Fashions on Field, our famous Mad Man’s Mile & the Tug-O- War competition at the end of the day. Then to compliment the day, the Dederang Hotel is having Danny Phegan & the Long Reach Band playing until late.”
Getting in the mood for the Birdcage at the Dederang Races are a couple of our favourite girls, Grace FalconerSmith and Amy van de Ven. Pic - Courtesy the Dederang Race Club
the ‘Birdcage’ include full bar, strong bookmakers ring, TAB, live music by popular local entertainer Paul Gibbs and Kelly’s WINTER EDITION SEVENTEEN Sports providing supervised, fun activities for the children.

NEED A HOLIDAY? Sure Do

ast winter your Ed got his ski boots on three times. Not real good you say, especially when he is running a business in a ski resort. End result of all this was that your Ed had better get a holiday right away from the joint. A quick sit-down with a mate over a quiet ale and passport numbers were locked in and Mastercard was handling the strain. Yep, we’re on our way. Whoops, now for some accommodation – and a recommendation from a friend who has just returned seemed ideal. Snowlines Lodge in Hakuba was perfect. Stephen Bryant was originally from Nowra, married a lovely Japanese lady Sarrasa and the couple purchased the lodge about eight years ago. Secrets of the lodge were: a good coffee machine, fully licensed bar, great Onsen, open fires and friendly staff. Sarrasa also

holds Japanese cooking classes, which ae thoroughly enjoyable -and you get the recipe/s. She also puts on two traditional meals a week – which you must book for – and which were delightful. Steve will pick you up from the bus terminal on arrival and offers a great service of shuttling guests to the slopes in the morning – to have you skiing at 8am or 9am depending on chosen ski area for the day. Around Hakuba there are half a dozen

(at minimum) ski resorts offering about 100 ski lifts. Just sorting them out was a challenge – but frightfully rewarding. The residential area of Hakuba is at an elevation of about 700 metres (equivalent to the altitude of the Bogong High Plains Road as you enter Bogong Village). The tops of the mountains are in the area of 2300 metres (Mt Bogong is 1986m) with the tallest being around 2930 metres (but this peak did not have lifts). On average the ski area offered around 1000 vertical metres of wonderful skiing. During the time your Ed was there, we did not receive any fresh snow, but the skiing was still great with dry cold snow up the top. As you walked around the village the Japanese drivers were courteous - slowing down to prevent splashing you as there is snow right throughout the village area. Dining was fabulous and your Ed can report that in the whole stay, only one night was not Japanese food – it was take-away pizza with a Japanese theme. Lachy Bowes, proprietor of Central Snowsports has three outlets in Hakuba and Scotty, the Hotham shop manager looked after our visiting skier – very much appreciated – with Central Snowsports providing a drop off and pick up service to many of the lodges. All up – a fabulous trip and you don’t have to be Einstein to work out where your Ed will be next February. Cheers! •

FALL LINES Shrove Tuesday
Teddy Bears Picnic
Shrove Tuesday (also known in Commonwealth countries and Ireland as Pancake Tuesday or Pancake Day) is the day in February or March immediately preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes. In others, especially those where it is called Mardi Gras or some translation thereof, this is a carnival day, and also the last day of ‘fat eating’ or ‘gorging’ before the fasting period of Lent.
Under the auspices of Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts, a group joined together with a view to assist school age kids to further their musical aspirations. When Kitty Vigo heard about the group fund-raising to assist these kids she gave a very generous donation, explaining that her late husband David was passionate about encouraging young musicians.
Locally Shrove Tuesday will be celebrated on March 5th with dinner at Tawonga Hall from 6pm. Cost: Adults $15. Primary kids $5. Per-school free. •
The group then asked Kitty if the scholarship could be named after David and Kitty responded “He would have been thrilled” so the David Vigo Youth Music Scholarship was formed. The Scholarship relies exclusively on fund raising, no grants and last year in excess of $4000 was raised with four events.
Rachael Kable from The Mindful Kind
SUMMER SUMMEREDITION EDITIONNINE TWO
As a result the group were able to award $2300 in scholarship money to three of the applicants. On top of this, folk at the Conservatorium of Music in Albury heard of the scholarship and gave a master class award to each applicant. The first fund-raiser event to be held in 2019 is the Teddy Bears Picnic on the 3rd March at Tawonga Park – which will be a free entry event. Coordinator Fay Mason said “Everything we’ve done so far has been adult events and it was time to do something that the kids could enjoy” The committee has been working on making this a very special occasion. There will be a Sunday school picnic atmosphere, three races will be the sack race, the three legged, and the wheel barrow , there will be age group heats and lots of prizes to be given out. Add to this a sausage sizzle, fairy floss machine, face painting and live music. So far the line-up is Smoke and Mirrors, Spooky Ukees, Dennis Cartwright, and last year’s winner Tamehana Pahina playing on his new keyboard that he was able to purchase with the prize money. Karen Ziemnicki will be conducting a Yogi Bears discount shop where there will be lots of Teddy bear items for sale at low prices.
FRIDAY11TH 24THNOVEMBER FEBRUARY 2017 FRIDAY 2016 The main event will be the Teddy Bear
Grand Parade, many categories on offer and the judges will be Megan Rigoni, Barb Talbot and Ellene Wood. So be sure and bring your favourite Teddy bear along with your picnic.
